From the DRE By Amy Wright Glenn Director of Religious Education [email protected]
Friday, October 4 A time to decompress from the week, to meet and enjoy each other. Adults share a potluck dinner at the Van Camps house (BYOB). Kids (of any age) have pizza and a movie with The Rev at her house ($5 donation). Directions available at the Welcome Table on Sundays or call Rev. Harris at 561-715-9593.
Dear UUFBR,I’m excited for this year as Director of Religious Education (DRE). Not only do we have new energy with our Intern Minister Dr. Scott Mulder, but we also have a DRE with one year under her belt ~ that’s me!
I’m grateful for your patience and kindness as I learned the proverbial ropes last year. I’m hoping that I can strengthen my weaknesses and build upon my successes for the 2019-2020 fellowship year.
There is one thing that is of importance to note: Hannah Mansour, our long time Nursery RE support staff is moving on. She is served UUFBR for five years now and new horizons await. Here is a picture of Hannah, Kiera, and me at Whole Foods. We had a staff lunch before summer. I’ll miss Hannah and her bright energy/light. She’s been a really positive presence for the children. I look forward to the new energy that awaits us as well.
As I look forward to the fall, I am excited to implement an idea that Harris offered up wherein each month we focus as a community on one of our UU principles and then I build upon that principle in RE and in my Not for Children Only talks on Sunday. I’m excited for this! May this next fellowship year be wonderful. And please let me know if you have any questions/concerns for RE. Peace,Amy
At this time, please DO NOT drop off your FLEA MARKET donations at UUFBR.
We’ll let you know when we have room. SOON!

Scott’s Corner From the Front Lines of Compassion and Justice A word from Intern Minister, Dr. Scott Theodore Mulder
Hello my friends,Earlier this month members of our fellowship attended the Call To Action meeting on immigration justice at St. Gregory’s.In response to this meeting, I saw an immediate need at the immigration
processing facility at Miramar. Charlie Cormier and I went down there together to share water with folks who were waiting for hearings under the Florida sun.More important than the sharing of water was the sharing of a message: yes, indeed, we welcome you here. It is my hope to make the sharing of water with folks here a part of my ongoing commitment to compassion and care; if you’d like to join me in this work, you are welcome to stop by the office or email me at [email protected], and we will discern a time when we can go down together.Additional formal channels for support can be engaged through Friends of Miami-Dade Detainees, Friends of Broward Detainees, and several other organizations. If you want to learn more about what you can do, feel free to reach out to any member of our Healing Justice Team.

UUFBR Saturday Film Series 2019 Saturday, October 12, 2019
Doors Open: 6:30pm Film Begins: 7:00pm Not recommended for children.
The original Black and White movie premiered in Pittsburgh on October 1, 1968. If you remember one of the sequel films, you heard that this was a true story based on events following the release of a special gas in the morgue of a VA hospital. (Return of the Living Dead, 1985). This is NOT a true story but inspired a host of retellings and variations by Director George Romero and many others.None of those matched impact of “Night of the Living Dead” for the revolutionary changes it brought to “horror film’ genre. The film was controversial in its day, and the graphic nature of the content outraged many critics and shocked many young viewers. A review by Roger Ebert in 2004 said “I don't think the younger kids really knew what hit them. They were used to going to movies, sure, and they'd seen some horror movies before, sure, but this was something else.” The new Code of Self-Regulation, recently adopted by the Motion Picture Assn. of American, would presumably restrict a film like this one to mature audiences. But Night of the Living Dead was produced before the MPAA code went into effect.”

My joy in the work of racial justice is ongoing. At our September UUFBR Healing Justice meeting, the first of this 2019-2020 Fellowship year, we started by checking in with one another. We shared what kept us working for racial justice. My joy emerged as I realized the healing justice group is a WE that keeps on coming back. Healing Justice work unites us in the spirit of the work.
Here is what I think I know. Our name holds it all. HEALING Justice. Justice that heals. As individuals we help one another to see how our justice work heals our spirits while we make a difference in the many ills of our worlds. As a group, we represent many links to the wider community as we support efforts to help heal the environment, enact voter's rights, care for the needs of undocumented immigrants some of whom are seeking asylum, quell gun violence. We also helping with local issues like support for homeless families (Family Promise), feeding the hungry (Boca Helping Hands), working with our Pearl City neighbors (DISC), PEACE (People Engaged in Active Community Efforts), etc. etc. etc. After our meeting, where we began by checking in with one another, I recognized the power of each of our experiences. As we described what kept us at our work, the common thread seemed to be the meaning of each of our individual stories, how we learned from and supported one another in our racial justice work. At the end of the meeting we shared what we planned to do to support this ongoing work. The roots of racial justice work call us to go deeper within ourselves and to reach out to others. This we do as we sustain one another with our healing energies; energies powered by "we".
We Are the Ones We’re Waiting For, Kenneth Sutton Fall 2019, 9/1/2019 UU World page 2. "The hard work of becoming an inclusive “we” is worth it. There is power, possibility, struggle, and joy in the work to become we. And that’s nothing compared to the power, possibility, struggle, and joy that will open before us when we arrive.
We are the ones we’ve been waiting for."
So let's stop waiting. Watch for more information about how our justice work is moving forward. Come join us as we continue our work, as we sustain one another with our loving energy.
Next meeting: October 17, 7 PM, in the Living Room of UUFBR.
Carolyn Brown, Healing Justice

Over fifteen years ago our congregation decided to support Family Promise, a non-profit program that provides shelter, meals, counseling and guidance to homeless families until they can save enough money to pay a security deposit and rent on their own apartment. This is usually for two to three months. In the early days of our participation, cots and air beds were set up in in our buildings. UUFBR members and friends cooked meals and served them to the families at the Fellowship. The job of providing this support is shared by a group of religious organizations that each host families for one week once each quarter. About six years ago, our congregation decided to take advantage of an opportunity to host the families at the “260 House”. This is a home owned by one of the other hosting congregations. Hosting the families there provides them with a room, beds and shower facilities for their family. Where are we now? UUFBR’s commitment is to host four (4) times a year. We pay $300 for the use of the “260 House” and $125 to clean the house after each week we host. We also spend about $100 for grocery staples for the house (milk, eggs, paper goods, breakfast items). We also rely on your generosity to host these families – 1 volunteer to cook dinner, 1 volunteer to assist with dinner (make a salad and bring a dessert}, and 2 volunteers to sleep at the house with the families each evening. That means we have 28 volunteer slots to fill for each hosting week. So, to summarize, our annual cost is about $2,100 ($300 + $125 +$100 = $525 X 4) and 112 volunteer slots (4 people X 7 days = 28 X 4 Weeks). We have been very blessed and able to cover these costs through Share a Plate and more recently, through very generous Grants from the Endowment Fund. Each hosting week, we struggle to find 28 volunteers to fill our commitment, but at the last minute, some of you do come to the rescue. Please mark your calendars. Our last hosting for 2019 is the week of November 3rd.
