1. From 1820 to 2010, which three continents had the highest number of immigrants come to the United States?

2. Choose one of the areas from question #1. During which decade or time period did most of the immigrants come to the United States? Why do you think this is? Research your answer.

Immigration: Open policy to settle its empty lands.

After the Civil War, states passed immigration laws; 1875 declared it a federal responsibility.

The Immigration Service was established in 1891.

From 1900-1920, there was a great wave of immigration to the U.S.

World War I caused a reduction from Europe, but began to raise at the end of the war.

Between 1921-1924, a quota system: assigning each nationality a quota based on its representation in past U.S. census figures.

Immigration decreased for the next 20 years.

American agriculture seasonal labor continued.

In 1965, replacement designed to unite families and attract skilled immigrants to the country.

In 1986, new legislation: Amnesty and Enforcement

In 1990 Reformation: The 1965 legislation was expanded. Immigration increased to at least 40%.

1990-1997: “Immigration policy can be measured by a simple yardstick: the people who should get in, do get in; people who should not get in are kept out; and people who are judged reportable are required to leave.”

Between 2006-2007, several attempts to improve immigration failed due to lack of agreement and little support.

2014: President Obama used his executive powers to authorize illegal immigrants who are parents of U.S. citizens. They must pass background checks and pay taxes. Border patrol will be strengthened as well.
