Israel's Independence DayOn the 5th day of Iyar, in the Jewish year 5708, corresponding to theGregorian date May 14, 1948, the modern State of Israel was born with theDeclaration of Independence by David Ben-Gurion.

The Text of the Israeli Declaration of Independence

(Text of the Declaration retrieved from Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Website)

ERETZ-ISRAEL [(Hebrew) – the Land of Israel, Palestine] was thebirthplace of the Jewish people. Here their spiritual, religious and politicalidentity was shaped. Here they first attained to statehood, created culturalvalues of national and universal significance and gave to the world theeternal Book of Books.

After being forcibly exiled from their land, the people kept faith with itthroughout their Dispersion and never ceased to pray and hope for theirreturn to it and for the restoration in it of their political freedom.

Impelled by this historic and traditional attachment, Jews strove in everysuccessive generation to re-establish themselves in their ancient homeland. In recent decades they returned in their masses. Pioneers, ma’pilim[(Hebrew) – immigrants coming to Eretz-Israel in defiance ofrestrictive legislation] and defenders, they made deserts bloom, revivedthe Hebrew language, built villages and towns, and created a thrivingcommunity controlling its own economy and culture, loving peace butknowing how to defend itself, bringing the blessings of progress to all thecountry’s inhabitants, and aspiring towards independent nationhood.

In the year 5657 (1897), at the summons of the spiritual father of the JewishState, Theodore Herzl, the First Zionist Congress convened and proclaimedthe right of the Jewish people to national rebirth in its own country.

This right was recognized in the Balfour Declaration of the 2nd November,1917, and re-affirmed in the Mandate of the League of Nations which, inparticular, gave international sanction to the historic connection betweenthe Jewish people and Eretz-Israel and to the right of the Jewish people torebuild its National Home.

The catastrophe which recently befell the Jewish people – the massacre ofmillions of Jews in Europe – was another clear demonstration of the urgencyof solving the problem of its homelessness by re-establishing in Eretz-Israelthe Jewish State, which would open the gates of the homeland wide to everyJew and confer upon the Jewish people the status of a fully privilegedmember of the comity of nations.

Survivors of the Nazi holocaust in Europe, as well as Jews from other parts ofthe world, continued to migrate to Eretz-Israel, undaunted by difficulties, restrictions and dangers, and never ceased to assert their right to a life ofdignity, freedom and honest toil in their national homeland.

In the Second World War, the Jewish community of this countrycontributed its full share to the struggle of the freedom- and peace-lovingnations against the forces of Nazi wickedness and, by the blood of its soldiersand its war effort, gained the right to be reckoned among the peoples whofounded the United Nations.

On the 29th November, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly passed aresolution calling for the establishment of a Jewish State in Eretz-Israel; theGeneral Assembly required the inhabitants of Eretz-Israel to take such stepsas were necessary on their part for the implementation of that resolution. This recognition by the United Nations of the right of the Jewish people toestablish their State is irrevocable.

This right is the natural right of the Jewish people to be masters of their ownfate, like all other nations, in their own sovereign State.

ACCORDINGLY WE, MEMBERS OF THE PEOPLE’S COUNCIL,REPRESENTATIVES OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF ERETZ-ISRAEL ANDOF THE ZIONIST MOVEMENT, ARE HERE ASSEMBLED ON THE DAY OFTHE TERMINATION OF THE BRITISH MANDATE OVER ERETZ-ISRAELAND, BY VIRTUE OF OUR NATURAL AND HISTORIC RIGHT AND ON THESTRENGTH OF THE RESOLUTION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERALASSEMBLY, HEREBY DECLARE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A JEWISH STATEIN ERETZ-ISRAEL, TO BE KNOWN AS THE STATE OF ISRAEL.

WE DECLARE that, with effect from the moment of the termination of theMandate being tonight, the eve of Sabbath, the 6th Iyar, 5708 (15th May, 1948),until the establishment of the elected, regular authorities of the State inaccordance with the Constitution which shall be adopted by the ElectedConstituent Assembly not later than the 1st October 1948, the People’s

THE STATE OF ISRAEL is prepared to cooperate with the agencies andrepresentatives of the United Nations in implementing the resolution of theGeneral Assembly of the 29th November, 1947, and will take steps to bringabout the economic union of the whole of Eretz-Israel.

WE APPEAL to the United Nations to assist the Jewish people in thebuilding-up of its State and to receive the State of Israel into the comity ofnations.

WE APPEAL – in the very midst of the onslaught launched against us nowfor months – to the Arab inhabitants of the State of Israel to preserve peaceand participate in the upbuilding of the State on the basis of full and equalcitizenship and due representation in all its provisional and permanentinstitutions.

WE EXTEND our hand to all neighbouring states and their peoples in anoffer of peace and good neighbourliness, and appeal to them to establishbonds of cooperation and mutual help with the sovereign Jewish peoplesettled in its own land. The State of Israel is prepared to do its share in acommon effort for the advancement of the entire Middle East.

WE APPEAL to the Jewish people throughout the Diaspora to rally round theJews of Eretz-Israel in the tasks of immigration and upbuilding and to standby them in the great struggle for the realization of the age-old dream – theredemption of Israel.

PLACING OUR TRUST IN THE “ROCK OF ISRAEL”, WE AFFIX OURSIGNATURES TO THIS PROCLAMATION AT THIS SESSION OF THEPROVISIONAL COUNCIL OF STATE, ON THE SOIL OF THE HOMELAND, INTHE CITY OF TEL-AVIV, ON THIS SABBATH EVE, THE 5TH DAY OF IYAR,5708 (14TH MAY,1948).

Justice For All: How the JewishBible Revolutionized Ethics

I just finished reading “Justice for All: How the Jewish Bible RevolutionizedEthics.” The book was a gift from Rabbi Moshe Smolkin of Ohavay ZionSynagogue in Lexington, Kentucky. It is a wonderful read and effectivelydemonstrates how far the Hebrew Bible exceeds all ancient cultures interms of advancing ethical ideas and declaring a “rebellion against NearEastern thought.” The book surveys many other ancient texts and thencompares and contrasts these ancient ideas with the views of the HebrewBible. I’m glad I read it. In the end it shows the Tanakh for what it is - “Themanifesto of the monotheistic revolution.”

A Review by Jon LangbergSummary

Live Opera at the Manship Theater at the Shaw Center for the Arts in BatonRouge, Louisiana.

A brief overview of the Opera “Carmen”:

Seduction…Passion…Betrayal. Opera's ultimate femme fatale weaves hertale of seduction in Bizet's Carmen. A collaboration with Flamenco Rouge,Opera Louisiane welcomes to the stage mezzo-soprano Zoie Reams in thetitle role. Carmen's passionate independence results in a deadly betrayal forthose who dare to love her. Bizet's fluid melodies paint the setting for thisSpanish inspired tale. The opera is sung in French with English supertitlesabove the stage.

Author’s Review:

Recently my wife and I had the pleasure of attending this opera. I had neverbeen to a live opera production before. Generally, opera is not mything. However in keeping with the general intent of this bulletin as I wastold was the desire of the founder of UIWU, I attended my first live opera. Iwent and got some culture.*

Live opera, theater, the ballet, and symphony are a new way of looking atthings and can be fun as well as entertaining. They do not have to beexpensive venues. The intent of these experiences is to make us wellrounded individuals. Besides, seeing and learning new and differentperspectives isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You never know what you’ll comeaway with. I was told by my Grandmother that her cousin, Coach KnuteRockne of Notre Dame had attended a ballet with his wife. While watchingthe ballet he had an idea for some new football plays. He also later made hisplayers attend the ballet performance to observe how to better move andcoordinate as a team. Not only did none of the young men get scarred for life, but they had a winning football season as well!

If you only see one opera in your life, make it this one. You never knowwhat you’ll come away with. Productions of this opera can be seen invarious locations by different artists around the USA and abroad.

(*Once when the editor and others were in NYC for a UIWU conference, theFounder encouraged everyone to take in some of the culture.)

Prof. James D. Tabor and Biblical teacher Ross Nichols are teaming up againfor an exclusive tour of the Holy Land February 28 – March 10, 2020. This istheir sixth tour together. Even if you have traveled to Israel before, orspecifically traveled with Tabor or Nichols, this is the tour for you.

We will take you behind the scenes, exploring new archaeological and textualdiscoveries as they are related to the key Biblical sites we will visit. No tourcan cover everything, but we will take you, quite literally, from Dan toBeersheba – and even 60 miles south, deep into the Arava, locating one ofthe biblical “camps” of the ancient Israelites in the time of Moses.

Anyone interested in biblical history and literature will find this tour refreshingand educational from beginning to end. We have no expectations regardingbelief systems, politics, or faith orientations. All that is required to go on thistour is a strong orientation toward learning more about the Bible andits history and archaeology.

The tour will transform the way you read and understand the Bible.Throughout the tour, we will share the stories that you know well from thetexts, in the very places where the events actually took place. We are limitingthe number of registrants to 40–one busload—because we want each personto have time to interact directly with Dr. Tabor and Ross Nichols.

The Hardest Commandments ThatWe CAN Keep

In this week’s class, Ross shares a message about keeping thecommandments. He begins with some texts that say we should keepcommandments. He also shows that according to these passages, keepingthe commandments leads to a holy life. Some say that it is impossible tokeep all the commandments. Some say it is not. In this informative teaching,Ross talks about keeping the commandments that we can keep. He furtherchallenges us to check our motivations.

Here is the link to this class entry on our website. At this link you will findthe video links from YouTube and Facebook, the audio link, and the teachingnotes from our faithful friend and scribe John "Baruch" Perry.
