People of God, why do we gather here this morning?

We gather as a people who want to be in community on this day of Worship.

What draws us to this place?

Many things – our need to connect with others, our desire to share our pain, our hope to find ways of peace in our community and in our world. But in the midst of it all we come to be aware of God who has created us, liberated us, and who loves us.

We gather as faithful Christians and seeking persons: pained and limited, healed and joyful. Give thanks to God who has made this gathering of humanity into a community of persons hoping, hurting, sharing, and loving.

Let our worship continue as we celebrate our community.

So be it. Amen.

Just a taste of something wonderful.

Only a glimpse of something magnificent.

Just a glimmer of the holy in something so ordinary.

Enough to know we are in the presence of God.

Enough to cause us to stop and stare in awe.

Enough to stir our hearts in wonder.

Enough to set our feet to dancing.

Enough to prompt our voices to protest and praise.

But God, rich in mercy and loving us so much, brought us to life in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. It is through this grace that we have been saved. God raised us up and, in union with Christ Jesus, gave us a place in the heavenly realm, to display in ages to come how immense are the

resources of God’s grace and kindness in Christ Jesus. And it’s by grace that you have been saved, through faith — and even that is not of yourselves, but the gift of God. Nor is it a reward for anything that you have done, so nobody can claim the credit. We are God’s work of art, created in Christ Jesus to do the good things God created us to do from the beginning.

May God bless the speaking and hearing of the Word.

Amen.

Yes, God so loved the world as to give the Only Begotten One, that whoever believes may not die, but have eternal life. For God sent the Only Begotten into the world not to condemn the world, but that through the Only Begotten the world might be saved.

125 YEARS OF BROADWAY

Established on July 12, 1890 – Christ’s Chapel at 1673 N. Halsted, which was the west side of Halsted, be-tween School and Melrose St. (the street numbering system was changed at a later date.) February 1891 – Moved to Oak Hall on Clark St. with 15 persons received on probation; in ten years, mem-bership was 175. July 1891 – Corner of Evanston Ave. and Buckingham Place was selected as site for building. June 1, 1902 – Formal dedication with 275 members. 1914 – Name changed to Broadway Avenue Episcopal Church as the street name changed. Mid 1950’s – major remodeling of church sanctuary. Mid 1960’s – Purchased small Victorian house at 618 and vacant property at 627 Buckingham to expand our parking lot area when needed. After the fire, the 627 property was sold which helped finance and kick-start the rebuilding. The 618 property became our church meeting place for several years after the fire. 1963 – Church name changed to Broadway Methodist Church. 1969 – Church name changed to Broadway United Methodist Church as the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren denominations merged. February 12, 1983 – Fire gutted the church building. March 1987 – Construction began on new building with Rev. Louise Mahon as pastor. Easter 1988 – First service in the new church. Fall 1988 – Official move to new building. Church parking lot was completed. Sept. 16, 1990 – Service of Consecration for the new building and celebration of 100 years of Broadway. Early 1990’s – Refinanced new building and completed the basement with working elevator, AC, carpeting, bathrooms and classrooms. Fall 1995 – Voted to be a Reconciling congregation. September 1998 – Rev. Greg Dell officiated at the Holy Union of two gay church members. This was con-sistent to Rev. Dell’s ministry, but the Methodist Church Book of Discipline decreed such service a violation of the discipline. A complaint was filed against Greg later in the Fall of 1998. Fall 1998 – An organization, “In All Things Charity,” a network of clergy and others in the denomination was formed to support, organize media contacts, raise money for a trial, and be the center of work needed to be done to support Rev. Dell. Fall 1998 – Church Within a Church movement was created to instruct and ordain folk who are not accepted for ordination within the United Methodist or other denominations. Spring 1999 – Church Trial for Rev. Greg Dell. The trial was held at Downers Grove UMC. The trial lasted for two long days and Rev. Dell was found guilty late Friday night. A sad Palm Sunday celebration followed on Sunday. July 1999 – Rev. Dell began a one year suspension from official ministry; Rev. Jenny Weber, who had earlier served as our seminarian intern, was assigned our pastor for that year. July 2000 – Rev. Dell returned. September 2001 – Rev. Vernice Thorn came to Broadway as a student intern from Garrett Evangelical Theo-logical Seminary. Vernice officially joined the pastoral staff as pastor upon her seminary graduation in 2003. July 2006 – Rev. Dell took a medical leave. Rev. Jenny Weber came as pastor to Broadway. August 2009 – Rev. Lois McCullen Parr was called to Broadway and has served as co-pastor with Vernice to the present. July 2015 – Rev. Alka Lyall will accept the pastorate at Broadway.

The Mission Minute for March is Southern Poverty Law Center. (www.splcenter.org)

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Selma and Bloody Sunday, which ultimately led to the passage of the voting rights act. So it seemed fitting to make Southern Poverty Law Center our mission minute for March. The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hatred and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the Center works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality. The Center is based in Montgomery, Alabama, the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement, and has offices in Atlanta, New Orleans, Miami, Fla., and Jackson, Miss.

Visit www.splcenter.org for more information. Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgom-ery, AL 36104, (334) 956-8200 or Toll-Free at (888) 414-7752. Or stop by BUMC’s information table and pick up the most recent copy of the SPLC’s Intelligence Report.

You can donate throughout the month – make checks out to Broadway and designate your check or envelope “SPLC” or “March Mission Minute.” You can also donate online.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Giving to Broadway

What is stewardship? Stewardship is about taking care of something valuable that has been entrusted to us. In bygone days, a great es-tate had a steward to manage the owner’s lands and operations. God has given each of us a unique set of gifts, and the idea of stewardship is to yield back to God or to the church a part of what we have been given. The stew-ardship team at Broadway is charged with encouraging members of the congregation to give of their time, talents, and treasure. I give regularly during service. Why do you want me to pledge? We absolutely are grateful for every dollar that you give. However, pledges are especially important because they represent your commitment to provide a set amount for the year. Using this information, the church can better plan our budget; we have a better idea of the level of giving we can expect to see. When you make a commitment to give to Broadway, you are invested in outcomes. What if I’ve never given before? As Rabbi Hillel said over 2000 years ago, “If not now, when?” We welcome your gift and your giving commitment at any time. Take that first step. How do I make a commitment?

You can fill out a blue pledge card the next time you’re at church and drop it in the offering plate. You can call the church during office hours at 773-348-2679 and pledge over the phone. You can print and fill out our online pledge card (link on www.broadwaychurchchicago.com/give) and bring it

with you to church or mail it in. You can go to this page on our website www.broadwaychurchchicago.com/give and click on the blue button

“Click Here to Donate.” You’ll be able to specify a dollar amount to pay weekly or monthly. See more about Online Giving below.

Tell me about making a Recurring Donation through Online Giving Go to www.broadwaychurchchicago.com/give and click on the blue button “Click Here to Donate.” You’ll be asked to enter information about your gift, identify yourself, and specify debit, credit, or automatic bank account with-drawal. You’ll be able to designate whether your pledge should go towards our Apportionment or not (the amount we owe to the United Methodist Church).

What is a recurring donation? A recurring donation is a donation set up to occur automatically on a regularly scheduled basis. In this case weekly or monthly. What are the benefits of setting up a recurring donation?

Reduces check writing for frequent donors Allows donations to continue uninterrupted during absences Allows donations to be spread out over time Reduces administrative costs for our organization Consumes fewer resources than paper check processing

I’m not sure. What if I lose my job or my financial circumstances change? We understand. Things happen. If you need to change your commitment at any time, just contact us. Your pledge represents your voluntary giving; it’s not a legally binding contract. How much should I pledge? Take time to think about an amount that is workable for you. Pray about your decision if you wish. We encourage giving a specific percentage of your gross or net income. The Bible challenges us to tithe (to give 10% of our in-come) as the giving goal in our lives. Start where you can and increase your gift from one year to the next. Some members of the congregation give less than 10%, some more. But don’t be intimidated by the 10% number. Even if you can only give $1 a month, but give it joyfully, that will make a difference to the church and to you.

Broadway welcomes Pastor Alka Lyall, effective July 1.

Rev. Alka Lyall (second row, second from left) with some members of the Relationship Builders team

Rev. Alka Lyall is a life-long Methodist, who is at the table fighting for the inclusion of those who continue to be voiceless and excluded. She grew up in the Methodist Church in India and came to the United States in 1996 as a seminary student. She is an ordained elder in the Northern Illinois Conference and has been serving the people of God, with the people of Northern Illinois Conference, since graduating from Seminary in 2000. She has two sons and a husband without whose support she could not have done anything. Alka has always been an active and involved member of the church. She was a delegate to World Methodist Council as a youth representative from India in 1986 and later served on its Presidium. She has been a delegate to 2012 and alternate to the 2008 General Conference. Alka has chaired and served on various boards, agencies and committees in her conference. She currently chairs the Annual Conference committee of the Northern Illinois Conference and serves on the Board of Directors of Northern Illinois Conference Jus-tice for our Neighbors. She is also active in the Northern Illinois Conference RMN task force. In addition, Alka serves on the RMN Board of Directors and is an elected delegate to the UMC Global General Confer-ence in 2016. Alka desires to share the love of God, which welcomes all people, with all the people of God but especially with those who have been rejected, refused and forgotten by the church. Her prayer is that someday the church will open its doors to all people and to that she continues her ministry.

The relationship builders team will continue to work to make this transition a smooth, healthy, and blessing to the Broadway community.

Christopher Lewis; Chairperson, Relationship Builders

TODAY — MARCH 15, 2015

Adult Education Hour Please join us on Sunday mornings at 10:15am in the Pillow Room as we reflect on and dis-cuss our next book The President’s Devotional by Joshua Debois. Every day, DuBois provided President Obama with a morning devotional weaving together scripture, song, prayer, and reflections, motivated by the spirit of God and infused with joyful flair. The President’s Devotional contains the best of these devotionals, daily spiritu-al guidance that offer peace, comfort, and inspiration throughout the entire year.

Church/Charge Conference TODAY, Sunday, March 15 at 12:30pm. See announcement on page 7.

Sharing Stories of Our Faith Journeys As part of efforts to strengthen Sunday morning Children’s Education for our older kids, we’d like to ask members of the Broadway community to serve as special guests during Children’s Church (during the 11:00am Sunday service) to share their stories of how faith has been part of their lives. The idea is to showcase for the kids the rich variety of faith journeys represented by members of our community, and prepare the kids to understand that there isn’t a single “right” way to be in relationship with God and church. To volunteer or find out more, please contact Ted Pfeiffer at [email protected]. Please put “Faith Journeys” in the subject line of your message.

April Newsletter Deadline Submissions for the April 2014 issue of The Broadway are due today. Articles in electron-ic format are preferred and should be sent to [email protected]. Hard copies may also be submitted in the newsletter mailbox off Friendship Hall.

Interested in becoming a member of Broadway Church?

Dear Broadway friends,

Some of you may have let us know that you are interesting in becoming “new members” with Broadway; oth-ers of you have been coming regularly (and are already involved with ministries), and we are wondering if you might be interested in taking the next step to move to what we call “into covenant” with Broadway/ Broadway United Methodist Church.

In the past, we’ve held a series of “Exploring Covenant” class in advance of receiving new covenants; however, we are now practicing a new way to enter into covenant.

On Sunday, March 22, we’ll give an invitation to come forward to be received into covenant (and, if someone has never been Baptized and wishes to be, we’ll do that, too). This plan means that we’ll prepare liturgy that we generally use for new covenants…but we won’t know until that moment who might step forward to publicly declare that they wish to make this step.

We invite you to be in discernment about this – if you think you may be ready to step forward on Sunday, March 22, be thinking about the ministry you’d like to claim as a part of our faith community (some of you have already claimed the ministry of the choir, Youth Lounge, property, etc.).

Please call to schedule a time to speak with one of us, prior to March 22.

We want to celebrate the movement of the Spirit, and we are as excited as you are to see how that Spirit moves you – and us!

On the journey with you,

Revs. Vernice Thorn & Lois McCullen Parr

“God calls Broadway United Methodist Church to be a faith community embracing the diversity of our Chicago neighborhood and larger community. We welcome all persons – celebrating the human family’s God-given diversity of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, and physical or mental capacity. We also welcome persons of all social and economic classes and faith backgrounds. At Broadway, we are accepted into God’s nurturing family, which invites us into spiritual growth through worship, study, mission, and social action. We are grateful for the opportunities God gives us to experience and share the love of Christ.”
