The Organization works on a broad range offundamental issues, from sustainable development,protection of the environment and refugees,disaster relief, counter terrorism, disarmament andnon-proliferation, to promoting democracy, humanrights, gender equality and the advancement ofwomen, governance, economic and socialdevelopment, international health, clearinglandmines, expanding food production, and more,in order to achieve its goals and coordinate effortsfor a safer world for this and future generations.

At the Millennium Summit of the GeneralAssembly in 2000, the heads of statessupported to make the United Nations a moreeffective instrument for pursuing all of thesepriorities: the fight for development for all thepeoples of the world; the fight against poverty,ignorance and disease; the fight againstinjustice; the fight against violence, terror andcrime; and the fight against the degradationand destruction of our common home.

The United Nations Conference on SustainableDevelopment - or Rio+20 - took place in Rio deJaneiro, Brazil on 20-22 June 2012. It resultedin a focused political outcome document whichcontains clear and practical measures forimplementing sustainable development.
It represented a global movement of change inwhich governments, the private sector and civilsociety all contribute to achieve globalprosperity while protecting the environment.

• Poverty eradication, changing unsustainable andpromoting sustainable patterns of consumptionand production and protecting and managing thenatural resource base of economic and socialdevelopment are the overarching objectives ofand essential requirements for sustainabledevelopment.

• Reaffirm the Rio Principles and the past action plans.
• Reinvigorate political will and raise the level ofcommitment by the international community to move thesustainable development agenda forward, through theachievement of the internationally agreed developmentgoals, including MDGs.
• Advance integration, implementation and coherence:assess the progress and the remaining gaps.
• Engage major groups and other stakeholders.

• Apply green economy policies as a useful tool in advancingsustainable development and ending poverty
• Recognize the importance of linking financing, technology,capacity-building and national needs for SD policies and greeneconomy
• Recognize the need for broader measures of progress tocomplement GDP
• Request the United Nations Statistical commission, inconsultation with relevant United Nations system entities andother relevant organizations, to launch a programme of work inthis area building on existing initiatives.

• Strengthen the role of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
• Establish a high-level political forum to address the three pillars of sustainable development in an integrated way

• Establish an inclusive and transparentintergovernmental process on SDGs.
• An open working group of 30 representativesshall be constituted no later than at theopening of the sixty-seventh session of theGA.
• The group will submit a report, to the sixty-eighth session of the Assembly, containing aproposal for SDGs for consideration andappropriate action.

“The Future We Want”: Framework for action
It was agreed:
• to accord the highest priority to poverty eradication and encourageinitiatives to enhance social protection for all people
• To improve the health of women, men, youth and children, and topromote education for sustainable development
• to promote gender equality and the empowerment• to support sustainable tourism and sustainable transport• to strive for sustainable consumption and production,• to ensure food security, clean water and sanitation, and affordable, and
sustainable energy for all,• to act on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological
diversity,• to curtail marine pollution, overfishing and ocean acidification,• to strengthen social protection floors and tackle global unemployment,
especially youth unemployment,• to build more lovable and sustainable cities and communities with
decent housing and sustainable transport for all,• to enhance support to small island developing States, the least
developed countries and other countries in special situations19
UN System Task Team
The UN System Task Team was established bythe UN Secretary-General in January 2012 tosupport system-wide preparations for the post-2015 development agenda. It brings together over60 UN entities and agencies and internationalorganizations and is jointly chaired by DESA andUNDP. The Task Team provides analytical inputs,expertise and outreach into the discussion on thepost-2015 development agenda.
The Task Team presented its first report,Realizing the Future We Want for All, in June 2012

UN System Task Team
The report lays out the Task Team’s mainrecommendations for a developmentagenda beyond 2015. It calls for anintegrated policy approach to ensureinclusive economic development, inclusivesocial development, peace and security andenvironmental sustainability within adevelopment agenda that responds to theaspirations of all people for a world free ofwant and fear.

UN System Task Team
To develop further analytical inputs, the UNTask Team formed several working groupson the global partnership for development,monitoring and indicators in the post-2015era and financing for sustainabledevelopment. The Technical Support Teamto provide support to the Open WorkingGroup was also established under theumbrella of the UN Task Team.

The Open Working Group
The Open Working Group was establishedon 22nd of January 2013 by decision 67/555of the General Assembly.
Member States have decided to use aninnovative, constituency-based system ofrepresentation that is new to limitedmembership bodies of the General Assembly.This means that most of the seats in theOWG are shared by several countries.

The Open Working Group had 13 meetingsand concluded with a document titled:FINAL COMPILATION OF AMENDMENTSTO GOALS AND TARGETS at it finalmeeting between 14 – 18 July 2014.

Compilers Guide for MSITS 2010
The UN Expert Group was established in late 2012 and started drafting the manual involving countries and organizations. The draft was presented at the UN Statistical Commission in 2014 and is being finalized for printing.
