Our vision is to become the heart of A≤HA. a Charreria, the ancient Mexican art of horse handling, is a deeply ingrained part of the Mexican spirit. As a way of life, a historical legacy and a tradition that carries on through centuries, it is an art of competitive skills and the national sport in a country full of traditions. Charros are known as skilled horsemen who proudly carry on such early Mexican traditions as roping and the handling of cattle and horses. Competing in the charreada, the charro demonstrates his skills through a series of events called suertes. From the haciendas of old Mexico, practices developed that led to the competitive events of the charreada, an event similar to rodeo. These competing charro teams are often made up from extended families that have been performing for generations. With the 2017 Signature Exhibit, “Nacidos Charro: Born Charro,” the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum celebrates the history and culture surrounding the charro. Inside the exhibit, guests take a cultural tour that explores the rich traditions surrounding the charro. Starting with the history of the charro, the exhibit moves on to explore the horses, tack, clothing and music that infuse the sport. The nine suertes are brought to life with rich imagery and artifacts. The exhibit will transport guests to a different place full of color, music and a rich heritage centered around the horse. Celebrate the charro now through July 29 and plan your visit at www.aqha.com/museum. PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE UNITED STATES CHARRO FEDERATION L

Our vision is to become the heart of A≤HA.

Growing up a sharecropper’s son is probably one of the reasons Lee Berwick decided to go into cattle and horses. He had gotten his fill of those fluffy white cotton bolls. It was more than 10 years after the formation of AQHA before Berwick bought his first American Quarter Horse. It was not long before the Louisiana native had the Quarter Horse bug.

Berwick purchased 23 Quarter Horses in a 24-month span in the early 1950s. His mare band included daughters of Rey Del Rancho, Peppy, Macanudo and Wimpy P-1. His stallion was Wimpy O’Nesa, by Wimpy P-1. In the mid-1960s, Berwick started breeding for speed and purchased Little Duce. He also owned half interest in Jet Straw, by Jackstraw (TB) and out of Miss 89’er.

His enthusiasm for racing led to the

development of Delta Downs racetrack in Vinton, Louisiana, and he was the president and a major stock holder for several years.

Berwick became an AQHA Director in 1960 and initiated the AQHA Supreme Champion award. Elected as president in 1969, he was successful in the creation of the American Junior Quarter Horse Association.

During his term, Berwick helped usher AQHA into the modern era. He oversaw the reorganization of AQHA’s various divisions, began negotiations for a computer system to improve record keeping and customer service, and saw the implementation of a seminar program for approving show judges.

Berwick was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1994. He died in 2001 at the age of 79.

The future of the American Quarter Horse depends on how well we prepare our youth to become industry leaders. Through their involvement with horses, they learn about responsibility, dedication, hard work and more. If we nurture the value of learning and self-improvement by encouraging them to seek higher education, they will be better prepared to guide the future of our industry.

One of the most meaningful ways to secure educational opportunities for our youth is through your support of scholarship endowments. Gifts to an endowed scholarship fund are not spent, only the interest income is used to award scholarships; this means your gift keeps working for the future of our youth and horses.

In order to help close the gap between available scholarship funds and the need for scholarships, the Foundation has lowered the minimum endowment level from $100,000 to

• $25,000 for individual donors, and• $50,000 for AQHA Regions/Affiliates.

This means a scholarship may be fully funded sooner to make a more immediate impact on our youth.

Help dreams become reality for our youth by donating to an existing scholarship endowment or creating a new endowment in honor or memory of a loved one. To donate, visit aqha.com/donatetoday and indicate your preference for a specific endowment on the additional information section of our giving page.

To learn more about creating an endowed fund, call 806-378-5029 or email [email protected].

CatherineMeck,DirectorofDevelopmentCatherine moved from Wilmington, Delaware, in July of 1999 to Dalhart, Texas, where she purchased her first American Quarter Horse. After she finished raising her three children in Canyon, Texas, she went back to school to receive undergraduate and master’s degrees in Communications at West Texas A&M University. Catherine has spent the last several years in donor development for the Salvation Army and the Texas A&M University System. Like others here at AQHA, she is excited to use her fundraising talents to further the promotion of the American Quarter Horse.

MeghanKellett,DirectorofDevelopmentOriginally from South Carolina, Meghan Kellett relocated to Texas in April of 2016. She grew up with a passion for horses and competed in a variety of disciplines, including hunt seat equitation, barrel racing, dressage and fine harness; but her heart belongs to eventing. Her love for the American Quarter Horse stems from the versatility of the breed. Meghan graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in business and has a background in pharmaceutical sales. She is excited to be a part of the AQHA family and looks forward to building strong relationships with the members.

CarrieMcBride,ExecutiveAssistantCarrie has been involved with horses since she was six years old, experiencing many facets of the industry from showing and farm management to association and show management. She graduated from The Ohio State University and worked in the financial services industry and at The Ohio State University before moving to Texas in 2012 to work for the National Reined Cow Horse Association. She is very excited to be a part of the AQHF team.
