Narrative Description (Describe the historic and current physical appearance and condition of the property. Describe contributing and noncontributing resources if applicable. Begin with a summary paragraph that briefly describes the general characteristics of the property, such as its location, type, style, method of construction, setting, size, and significant features. Indicate whether the property has historic integrity.) _____________________________________________________________________________ Summary Paragraph The Thomas T and Margaret Taylor house is a one-story ranch house with Ranch-style and Wrightian Modern details. The house is located at 604 East Taylor Lane, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah and was designed by prominent modern San Diego Architect Richard George Wheeler and constructed by Mulcock Construction Company in 1955.1 This large house rests on a concrete foundation supporting an exterior combination of flagstone, concrete brick with raked mortar, wood sheet siding and large floor-to-ceiling glass panels. The façade and retaining walls feature green-tinted flagstone. The house exterior has had no modifications and is in good condition. The house interior has been partially demolished except for the original flagstone fireplace, living room soffited ceilings and wall framing, but retains its open floor plan. The house is located on a 1.46-acre wooded parcel with an associated second 0.15 acre parcel containing a contributing greenhouse/shed.2 The immediate neighborhood is composed of apartments, condominiums and the Murray City Cemetery. The property meets the registration requirements of the Historic Resources of Murray City, Utah, 1859-1967 Multiple Property Listing and Submission (MPS) within the Residential Buildings and Associated Secondary Buildings/Structures property type category. The Thomas T and Margaret Taylor House retains its architectural integrity and is a significant local contributing resource. 1 Building Permits in 7 Months Set Record Year, Murray Eagle Newspaper (Utah), September 3, 1954. 2 Salt Lake County Assessor’s Website parcel description and Destiny Real Estate listing description August 2015

______________________________________________________________________________ Narrative Description Exterior The Thomas T. and Margaret M. Taylor House is the only known and very unique Utah example of the residential work of Richard George Wheeler, a noted modern architect who practiced primarily in Southern California from 1947 through 1989.3 The house contains almost all of the architectural elements associated with the Ranch house-style: a long, low asphalt-shingled hipped-roof with large overhanging eaves covering an asymmetrical L-shaped, single story structure with breezeway and attached garage. Each roof hip end has a small, flared oriental style gable-end detail. The house also reflects the Ranch style through its use of asymmetrical fenestration and large expanses of windows. The Taylor house exterior has flagstone on the front façade and wood, wood siding, oversized concrete brick and large glass panels with patio doors on the remaining façades. The house still contains its original wood and metal windows, including floor-to-ceiling single- paned window panels and unique metal-framed French casement windows. In addition, the immediate exterior features Ranch style patios, planters and integrated wing walls.4 The use of patios and retaining walls is informed by the Wrightian Modern as well as the Ranch style in domestic architecture.5 The façade (south elevation) has a long, low roof line over a complex, asymmetrical façade.6 From west to east on façade: a stacked, raked-mortar, painted concrete brick wall with small windows covers the interior office space. To the right, two large wooden entry doors with oriental style handles flank the rear of the large green flagstone fireplace. The fireplace is perpendicular to the formal living room with its two-panel floor to ceiling windows and glass patio doors facing the large front flagstone patio, wooded area and pond. Continuing to the right, the formal dining room and open kitchen area contain a single floor-to-ceiling window and glass patio door with wood sheet siding base and trim. To the right of the kitchen, the façade is composed of wood sheeting siding with two metal framed French-style casement windows. The prominent overhanging roof covers a breezeway and stacked, painted concrete brick two car garage. The east elevation is composed of a painted concrete brick side wall of the garage and a bedroom wall. The bedroom wall has Ranch style high, narrow horizontal windows across the entire length. The north elevation, from east to west, contains the angled rear and side painted concrete brick walls of the garage, a breezeway, a rear bedroom wall, composed of concrete brick and a centrally located single large glass window. The remaining façade contains four floor-to-ceiling glass panels and a six-light glass enclosed porch off the rear of the office. The west elevation contains two additional glass panels of the enclosed porch, a glass patio entry door and painted concrete brick wall with a single small centrally located window. The west elevation contains a 3 Wheeler, Richard G biographical and architectural webpage on Modern San Diego website: http://www.modernsandiego.com/Wheeler. double-hung, one-over-one window which matches the window on the porch, including decorative trim molding, arched lintel and wood sills. The brick lintel over the window has some loss of mortar and shifting of brick, but otherwise this elevation is in good condition. Interior On the interior, the house has 2,955 square feet on the main floor and an 870 square-foot partial basement.7 The interior has been partially demolished during a recent remodeling project. The kitchen, bath and other built-in features have been removed. Most of these features were not historic since a circa 1990s remodel. The sheetrock walls, floors, carpets and insulation have also been removed. The only remaining features are the original ceilings with recessed-lighting soffit in public areas and fireplace. The Taylor house has a Ranch style large fireplace with green flagstone veneer. The interior also reflects Ranch style details, including a simple, open floor plan; separated living (public) and bedroom (private) areas; a variety of window types; and simple interior trim. All original stud walls remain and the overall space can easily be recreated by refinishing the walls, which were simple in keeping with the Ranch style interior. The property was sold in 2016, and the real estate brochures document the original conditions as of August 2015.8 The only change to the existing structure is the reframing of part of the enclosed porch to create a built-in seated area, which is not complete. Setting/Site The Taylor House sits on a 1.46-acre parcel with extensive landscaping, mature trees, guest parking, a small brook and pond. Much of the native landscaping is a result of the house’s setting in the riparian course of the Little Cottonwood Creek. The property also includes a second 0.15 parcel which contains a concrete block greenhouse, also built in 1955, a contributing outbuilding.9 The greenhouse was originally also a gardener’s residence. The flanking glass domes have been removed, but the bases are intact.

Statement of Significance Summary Paragraph (Provide a summary paragraph that includes level of significance, applicable criteria, justification for the period of significance, and any applicable criteria considerations.) The Thomas T. and Margaret M. House, built in 1955, is locally significant under Criterion C in the area of Architecture. The Price House is significant for its association with the San Diego-based architect Richard George Wheeler. It is the only known example of his work in Utah. The period of significance is the construction of the house in 1955. The property is an excellent example of the Wrightian Modern movement combined with the popular Ranch Style in domestic architecture of the mid-twentieth century. The open design of the house and the retaining walls that fully integrated it with its site are reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie School designs. Although most of the original landscaping is gone, the property is a good example of integrated residence and landscape design in the mid-twentieth century. The property contributes to the historic character of its Murray neighborhood. The property is eligible within the Multiple Property Listing and Submission (MPS), Historic Resources of Murray City, 1859-1967. Because the Murray MPS is organized by building types, the associated historic context is the “Americanization of Murray’s Residential Architecture, 1902-1965.” ______________________________________________________________________________ Narrative Statement of Significance (Provide at least one paragraph for each area of significance.) Architectural Significance The Thomas T. and Margaret M. Taylor House, built in 1955, is a one-of-a-kind mid-century architect-designed home in Murray, which was known for its vast numbers of suburban tract housing subdivisions in the post World War II-era. The original 2.6-acre parcel was located in an area known as Godrey’s Grove, named for the pioneer family that owned property on the east side of the Little Cottonwood Creek. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries, Godfrey’s Grove was the site of picnics, swimming and a church-operated camping spot for girls. The Taylor home is the only surviving example of the three estate-sized houses built when the grove began to be subdivided in the 1950s. The Taylor property is currently surrounded by multi-story condominiums and apartments that were built in the 1960s and 1970s. The architect, Richard George Wheeler, was born in San Diego in 1917, the son of the prominent architect, William Henry Wheeler.10 Richard graduated in architecture from the University of California in Berkeley shortly before serving in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked for his father for a short time before becoming self-employed in 1947. Richard began working out of his garage with one employee, Clark Laycock, who crafted the working drawings and specifications for each project. Within two years, the firm had grown to ten employees and had its own office building. Wheeler’s firm was primarily residential in the early 1950s, but the firm had commissions for several medical buildings and by the late 1950s had several large commercial commissions. The architect William Henry Wheeler drew on the popular styles of the early twentieth-century: Neo-Classical, Spanish Colonial Revival, etc., but Richard George Wheeler’s early solo works in the late 1940s indicate that he broke from his father’s traditionalism and fully embraced the vocabulary of modern architecture. Wheeler’s work included flat and angled roof lines, simple horizontal planes broken by a

10 Three buildings designed by William Henry Wheeler are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the San Diego Athletic Club, the Eagles Hall, and the Balboa Theatre. All are located in San Diego’s historic downtown.

strong vertical element, and full-height walls of glass. His favorite material was decorative concrete block, which was frequently accented by stone facings, evocative of the Wrightian Modern style. The Taylor House built in 1955 is very similar in style to Wheeler’s other residential work, although the semi-secluded wooded setting was very different from the booming San Diego suburb of Point Loma where most of Wheeler’s residential work is found. While Wheeler used the Wrightian Modern style for smaller commercial buildings, such as the Mission Valley Inn (1958), his later commercial projects were designed in the New Formalism style. The Taylor House was completed a few years before Richard George Wheeler produced his most important commissions: Benbough Professional Building (1958), the Point Loma Doctor’s Hospital (1958) and the Security Trust National Bank (1958). His best known and most influential commission was the San Diego Gas & Electric Company, a high rise built in downtown San Diego built in 1967. At the time of this death in 1990, Richard George Wheeler’s longtime collaborator, W. Gayne Wimer, remarked, “An era in San Diego architecture has ended. He was one of the last great warriors who helped usher in the transformation of San Diego architecture.”11 The Taylor House is a rare example of Wheeler’s work outside of the San Diego. The Taylor House is a good example of Wheeler’s residential work, where he combined the sprawling outdoor living style of the Ranch house with the integrated retaining walls, patios, and glass walls of the Wrightian Modern house. The Taylor House is the only example of Wheeler’s work in Utah. It is also a relatively early example of the Wrightian Modern house, most Utah examples were built after Frank Lloyd Wright completed the Stromquist house in 1959.12 The Taylor House is one of the best examples of an integrated landscape, and its relative isolation means much of the original setting and feeling has been preserved, despite some modifications to the interior of the house. The property represents the bread-and-butter commissions that allowed Richard George Wheeler to develop his style and grow his firm in the mid-1950s. Additional Historical Context William McMillan received the United States Land Patent for the North half of the Northeast quarter of Section 18 on March 5, 1875 where the Thomas T. and Margaret Taylor House is located.13 On January 10, 1876 William McMillan sold 43 acres to James Godfrey, a noted prominent resident of Murray.14 The property remained in the Godfrey family when it was sold to John and Sylvia Godfrey Maynes on November 24, 1922, six years before Godfrey’s death in 1928. On April 28, 1939, John Maynes sold a 2.6 acre parcel along Little Cottonwood Creek to E. Charles Springer and his son Ernest Springer. E. Charles Springer then sold the parcel to Thomas T. Taylor Jr. on July 30, 1954. Thomas T. Taylor, Jr. was born on July 9, 1892 to Thomas T. and Florence Taylor in Fort Scott, Kansas. His family moved to Lewiston, Montana in 1908. Thomas T. Taylor, Jr. attended the University of Kansas and Graduate School of Business at New York University. He also served in the 91st Infantry Division in France during World War I.15 After World War I, Thomas returned to Montana, where he

began working for the Montana Bank Commission and later the United States Savings and Loan Association. The United States Savings and Loan Association was later renamed Prudential Federal Savings and Loan, and Thomas T. Taylor became secretary and manager of the parent company in 1926.16 On January 22, 1927 he married Margaret Elizabeth Murray in Silver Bow County, Montana.17 Thomas continued to manage Prudential Federal Savings and Loan in Montana until the company moved its headquarters to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1938, where he also relocated. Thomas and Margaret had one son, Thomas T. Taylor, III. Thomas T. Taylor became president of the Prudential Federal Savings and Loan company when it relocated to Salt Lake City in 1938 and also managed the company for 36 years until his retirement in 1962. Thomas was responsible for the influential modern Prudential Federal Savings building located at 117 South Main Street in downtown Salt Lake City, designed by architects William R. Pereira and James Langenheim.18 Thomas T. Taylor Jr. engaged noted modern Architect Richard George Wheeler, of San Diego, to design a modern ranch house on the 2.6 acre property. Mulcock Construction Company, a Salt Lake City construction firm built the house in 1955-56. Thomas T. Taylor continued as the chairman of the board of directors of Prudential Federal Savings and Loan until the late 1960s. During his time in Salt Lake City, Thomas T. Taylor also served on the Salt Lake City School Board, as president of the Alta Club, as president of the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, board chairman of the Blue Cross Association and many other civic positions.19 Margaret Taylor also served in prominent civic positions, including the president of the director’s board of the YMCA in Salt Lake City. Thomas T. Taylor Jr. and his wife Margaret lived in the house until 1971, when they retired to Sun City, Arizona. Thomas T Taylor Jr passed away in April 1984. 20

On April 4, 1988 Thomas T Taylor, III sold the house to Mark K. O’Neill, who owned the house for 28 years until its sale on February 1, 2016 to Jeff D. Gentry, Jr. Forty days later, on March 20, 2016, Jeff D. Gentry, Jr. died in a skiing accident at Snowbird Resort in Salt Lake County, Utah.21 In March 2018, the estate of Jeff D.
