District Commander 2019-2020
D/C Edward (Ted) Reiss, Jr, SN-CN
What a great year thanks to so many
who gave so much. Starting with the Bridge
Officers and their assistants who kept us
focused and pitched in whenever and wherever
needed or asked: D/L/C’s District Executive Officer Sam Bonilla,
AP, District Administrative Officer Cliff Schmidt, JN, District
Educational Officer Jack Nason, SN, District Secretary Peggy Reiss,
JN, and District Treasurer Andy Battaglia, SN, plus the D/1st/L’s
Assistant Educational Officer Melissa Butler SN, Assistant
Secretary Gene Burson JN and Assistant Treasurer Casey
Considine, JN. Flag Lieutenant Tom Krupa, AP and other Past
Commanders: Don Cook SN, Connie Beckman, SN, Myles Gee,
SN, Susan Lomastro, AP and Warren Maciag, SN answered all my
questions. My sincere thanks go out to them all. And special
thanks to P/D/L/C Sandy Krupa, P who kept us all entertained and
informed from behind the scenes. I also know that dozens of
others deserve my thanks.
We listened to your concerns and tried some new items.
Keynote speaker for Saturday’s luncheon is hoped to create more
interest. Round table topics related to ideas from the commanders.
Shorter awards segment of conference with pictures taken only
after the conference. Shorter presentations by Bridge with full
reports on the web site. More innovations are in the works. By-
laws are being updated for approval in April. Your new bridge
will have even newer ideas. I am leaving you in good hands.
Thanks for allowing me to represent you.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER
D/Lt/C Sam Bonilla, AP [email protected]
Since this is the last
article I write as your Executive
Officer, I reflect back on all the
accomplishments by this
department. I want to give thanks to everyone that
kept things running smoothly. It’s equally important
that we always remember that this is a volunteer
organization and these men and women worked
hard at their job assignments and succeeded in
keeping District 22 the best of the best in America’s
Boating Club®. I can’t thank them enough!
When I took on
this job, I made a
commitment to visit as
many D22 Squadrons
as I could. This year I
have already attended
many of the Change of
Watch ceremonies and
I have been very
impressed with the
new crop of Bridge
officers and excited hearing about the many ideas,
exciting plans, and promises to keep our District
growing and commitment to promote education and
safety among our boating community. Let’s give
them the support they so richly deserve. As this
version of
Beacon 22 goes
to print, most
of us are
headed to
Ponte Vedra,
FL, the
National
Annual
Meeting. Why is this significant? Besides the usual
flow of information, educational sessions offered,
and golden opportunities to meet old friends and
acquittances, our very own Past District Commander
and member of the Sanibel-Captiva Sail and Power
Squadron, V/C Mary Paige Abbott, SN will become the
very first female National Chief. We are very proud of
her accomplishments and will be there to show our
support. As a matter of fact, 80
squadron members will be
continuing the celebration
aboard Holland America’s
Nieuw Statendam, a Tropical
Caribbean cruise arranged by
none other than Lt Dawn
Eckhart, AP. No doubt this cruise will be a lot of fun
and a great time in honor of Mary Paige. Millie and I
are looking forward to this opportunity.
Now back to reality! With all of the new Bridge
Officers assuming their positions this January and
February, D22 is offering two very timely sessions of
Officer Training. On 7 March 2020 you can register for
the session offered at the Sarasota Power and Sail
Squadron HQ and on 14 March 2020, there’s an
opportunity for a session at the Fort Myers Power
Squadron HQ. Please see additional details in the flyer
included here. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to
learn how this organization functions from top to
bottom. To quote the famous inventor, Benjamin
Franklin, “An Investment in knowledge, pays the best
dividend.” You can take it to the bank!
Thank you for working hard in keeping our
boating community safe on the water!

in Water Safety”, she has presented this topic across the
country and at a briefing at the US Capital.
The 2020-2021 Change of Watch will be held on Saturday

I hope you have all looked at the D22 web site for
and this issue of the Beacon for hotel reservations, the
schedule of events and the Change of Watch reservations
form. I hope this event offers something for everyone.
The D22 bridge is very excited on the new D22
website at this writing the web site is under full
construction by a very qualified web company. I look
forward to a very exciting, dynamic and interactive site. I
hope the new site to go live in the upcoming month after
testing out all the interfaces and options that are part of it.
Looking forward to seeing you at the conference.
EDUCATIONAL OFFICER D/Lt/C John R. Nason, SN
One of the recent national
objectives is to provide more on the
water training for all boaters.
America’s Boating Club has just opened a new
Learning Center in Central Florida. It is located on
Lake Harris at Fisherman’s Cove Marina, about 2
miles southwest of Tavares. Training is aimed at
new boaters and includes 3 hours in the classroom
and 5 hours of power boat operation provided by
professional, certified, instructors. Some of the
subjects covered include maneuvering in close
quarters, docking, anchoring and safety procedures.
You can register on line at www.abclc.org.
Looking forward to the annual meeting at Sawgrass
and getting updates on all of the new education
information for presentation at the D22 Spring
Conference.
