ROCKY MOUNT POWER SQUADRON
THE COASTAL PLAINS SIGNAL
November 2016
Commander Linda (“Bug”) K. Joyner, S
Life has been quite hectic the last month. I have been taking many training classes for my new role at work as the safety resource. I have traveled to Memphis, Tennessee and found time to go to the Pyramid Bass Pro Shop. Yes it is actually a pyramid. It has rivers full of fish and even has alligators. You can rent a room and go down stairs to shop for all of your boating needs. It was quite an experience learning to drive in such a populated city. As we move into the fall, we have many activities planned. The Past
Commanders pig-pickin is scheduled for 06 November. It will be held at
Chris and Cathy’s home in Tarboro. We will have lots of great company and food! Please be sure to
contact Chris and Cathy if you are planning to attend. On 14 November, Nelson and Ondra will share
their voyage to the Bahamas at our Bridge meeting at Texas Steakhouse. You will want to be sure to
be there, it will be very exciting! Our annual Christmas party is scheduled for 03 December at Myrtle
Grove Plantation in Macclesfield. In January, the district is offering Leadership Development in
Raleigh on 05-06 January.
We have talked this year on several occasions about developing an award in memory of Glenn
Daughtridge. I would like everyone to look at the past year and list the community service
opportunities that you have taken part in. These services can be ones that came through the United
States Power Squadron and those that you do on your own. Perhaps you volunteer at a church or
school assisting with educational skills or mentoring activities. Are you a volunteer for the elderly?
Glenn did many activities for his community, church, the Power Squadron and for individuals and
always with a smile and a joke or two.
The Glenn Daughtridge award will be presented at the Change of Watch scheduled for 28 January. It
will be an honor for the member that receives this award in memory of Glenn. My hope is that Patricia
will be the member to present the award. The deadline for submission of your service to the
community is set for 30 November.

Most of us can consider ourselves fortunate that we do not live any closer to the coast as hurricane Matthew did little damage in our areas. We had lots of debris to clean up and some lost power for a while and travel through some areas was hindered by flooded
roads. Please pray for those who lost their lives or homes in the nearby flooded areas and don’t forget to
give thanks to those who acted to save or help others.
Some of you will have the opportunity to do some more boating as the water levels in many areas have returned to more normal conditions and you will need to be very alert to hazards in the water. There are often many unusual items washed downstream that can create problems for boaters. Do not hesitate to report hazards to the Coast Guard as this could prevent other boaters form a bad experience. It is quite common to see Aids to Navigation (ATON) that are damaged or missing following a major storm. Problems with ATON’s can be reported to the Coast Guard by radio, phone or their web site. The following website is meant for such reporting: http://navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=atonOutageReport.
The form shown on this page was designed to aid in collecting information on ATON’s and can be used to aid in reporting problems. If you would like to have copies advise and I will forward it to you. A copy of the completed form can be submitted with your report to the Coast Guard. If you send a copy of the report to myself or the Area Cooperative Charting representative you will get cooperative charting credit for the report.
Education Report
My wife, Barbara, and I attended the D27 Fall Council/Conference in Greensboro, NC 14-15 October and 2016. It was great seeing old friends of D27, and meeting new ones.
At the Town Hall Meeting Commander Alligood, on the spur of the moment, asked Eric Pearson of D/26 to talk about the Digital Media Library. Eric began with a brief description and followed up with a short power point presentation explaining each section. The Digital Media Library is free to all members of the United States Power Squadrons, whether you are an instructor, student, or a member making a poster, slide show presentation or needing other material. You may access the Web site at www. USPSdml.org according to Eric it will take about 8 hours to down load. See the next page for more information.
At the next Bridge Meeting we will be discussing dates, cost, and location for Americas Boating Course.
