Pastor’s Pen: Is it warmer back at Temple yet? I’m writing this from Jacksonville, Florida. We have been gone for about 7 days and will be back in a couple more. As we drove south from Indiana, I was constantly watching the miles increase and slowly watching the temperature outside increase. I have to admit I liked that a lot!!! Two days ago I was on a boat 40 miles off Ft. Myers beach, fishing in 80 degree temps… and the gulf where we were fishing was 80 feet deep (thank goodness for friends with boats!) I kept thinking how bizarre that it is -20 below back home… hard to wrap my mind around that one. I have to be honest with you… I was glad to not be in Indiana this last week. Weird that we all were having weather… everyday we experi- enced weather… higher temperatures or more heat and sunlight seemed to make my journey south much more enjoyable. Revelation 3.14-22 14“To the angel of the church in Laod- icea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God, says this: 15‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. 16‘So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. 17‘Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, 18I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. 19‘Those whom I love, I re- prove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent. 20‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. 21‘He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’” In the preceding scripture, God is calling for people to be excited about the opportunity to be the church Jesus has called them to be. Sometimes we talk about people “catching fire” for the Lord. I guess their passion has increased… their drive for Christian maturity may be developing rapidly… their “Christian temperature” is getting hotter!!! Pastor’s Pen: Is it warmer back at Temple yet?

I’m writing this from Jacksonville, Florida. We have

been gone for about 7 days and will be back in a couple more. As we drove south from Indiana, I was constantly

watching the miles increase and slowly watching the temperature outside increase. I have to admit I liked that a lot!!! Two days ago

I was on a boat 40 miles off Ft. Myers beach, fishing in 80 degree temps… and the gulf where we were fishing was 80 feet deep (thank

goodness for friends with boats!) I kept thinking how bizarre that it

is -20 below back home… hard to wrap my mind around that one. I have to be honest with you… I was glad to not be in Indiana this last

week. Weird that we all were having weather… everyday we experi-enced weather… higher temperatures or more heat and sunlight

seemed to make my journey south much more enjoyable.

Revelation 3.14-22 14“To the angel of the church in Laod-icea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of

the creation of God, says this: 15‘I know your deeds, that you are

neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. 16‘So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My

mouth. 17‘Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are

wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, 18I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become

rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to

anoint your eyes so that you may see. 19‘Those whom I love, I re-prove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent. 20‘Behold, I

stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.

21‘He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His

throne. 22‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to

the churches.’”

In the preceding scripture, God is calling for people to be excited about the opportunity to be the church Jesus has called them

to be. Sometimes we talk about people “catching fire” for the Lord. I guess their passion has increased… their drive for Christian

maturity may be developing rapidly… their “Christian temperature” is getting hotter!!!

(Continued from Page 1) Just like we have enjoyed warmer temperatures,

God is seeking those that are warming up to be the hands and feet of Christ. I like

a warmer climate in February and God likes a church that is on fire to share the Gospel with the world. Maybe this is a tremendous oversimplification, but God

makes it clear in this scripture that he desires people and churches that are pas-sionate or he will “spew them out of his mouth”.

Let me wrap it up this way: we each are on a journey toward holiness, to-

ward Christian maturity, toward becoming the son or daughter that God calls us to be. We each have “weather” we are subjected to in our lives (good times and bad)

and we each have an opportunity to “be the church” by sharing the Gospel… some of us are probably, as God stated, cold or lukewarm or hot. Where we are depends

on the decisions we are making in our lives and what we are asking the Holy Spirit

to do in our lives. I know I enjoyed the warmer temperatures on my vacation… I’ll just bet I will also enjoy being warmer or more passionate as a Christian and if our

church catches fire for sharing the Gospel too. Tomorrow we begin heading home, toward Terre Haute and toward Temple. May we arrive to find things are really be-

ginning to heat up… physically & spiritually.

The WNL! continues to grow!! Twenty three chil-dren and Middle School Youth have participated so far and thirty four adults with an average attendance of 34 each night. The kid’s choirs (2) will be singing for the 11:00 service soon. The adult class is growing. The suppers have been great! The stories and crafts are exciting and fun! What more could you ask for on a cold, boring Wednesday night than a super awesome time at Temple?!? We begin at 5:45 with a light supper, followed at 6:15 pm by an hour of study, crafts, singing and fun! Join us! Bring your family, friends, neighbors to attend class or help—or both! If you would be willing to plan and prepare a light meal for one Wednesday Night Live!, please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex or call the office to volunteer.

MISSION AND OUTREACH CORNER

Page 6 March

A few Changes you may notice…

1. Prayer list in the bulletin… effective immediately we will begin placing people on the prayer list and leaving them on until the person submitting the person or per-sons has called Margaret to take them off the list or until the beginning of the next month. At the start of each new month, the entire list will be erased and we will start over… people will need to call in again if they want someone on the prayer list. ALSO, please remember to ask the individual or family you are requesting prayer for to make sure they are alright with you placing them on our prayer list. 2. Team Leaders & ministry leaders: we will begin placing a new section in the Temple Tower encouraging members to volunteer to serve in various capacities here at Temple. PLEASE, if your group or ministry needs help/volunteers, make sure and contact Margaret and get your needs listed in the monthly newsletter.

How would you like a $1700.00 utility bill EVERY

month? This is just one expense 14th and Chestnut

Community Center has. The Mission Team is having a

spaghetti and salad luncheon on Sunday, March 22

starting at 11:00. A free will offering will be taken to

help 14th and Chestnut. Our first luncheon made $547, so we have a

ways to go! This is our quarterly Mission Project for January-March. If you

would like to donate, you may do so at anytime during this first quarter.

Always Needed: Food for 14th and Chestnut Community Center. (Collection barrels

located in the Narthex) Money for “Change for Change” for Benevolence Fund. (Collection jars by

Exit doors in the Narthex) Labels and UPC codes for Red Bird Mission. (Basket on table in Narthex

KUDOS AND NOTES

Rev. Alan & Pat Rumble

228 Highland Ct. - Open House (with refreshments)

for UM Temple church family & guests

Sunday, March 15 – after worship thru 3pm

$1,000 for donation to the church

We are inviting you to be our eyes, and ears. Our parsonage at 228 Highland Ct. is in excel-

lent shape and the price has been a reduced. Decide for yourself- we know it is a bargain.

If any of you do introduce a buyer to our Realtor, Linda & Tom Chiado (249-0995), after the

closing we will offer $1,000 for donation to the church. (The check will be written-by-me to

the individual with the expectation that they donate it to the church in their own name and

thereby receive a tax deduction.)

This blesses us who need to sell the house, the buyer with a great home, the congregation

with a donation, and the finder with a tax deduction. It also awakens at least in me the deep

potential of a church family in our spiritual lives, and in every aspect of our lives together.

We plan to be at worship and the Open House. Please join us.

(The offer, of course, is available even if you are not able to attend the Open House.)

Fondly,

Rev. Alan & Pat Rumble

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped with preparing our bulk mail-ings and who continue to help with our Wednesday Night Live, Light-house Mission, Celebrate Recovery and other ministries. The church can-not succeed in its Mission without you!

Thank you to those who helped

programs by purchasing a

from our church. We were

able to add $115 to our fund.

As I write this letter for the Temple Tower I cannot help but feel the presence of Joe Petty. Mr. Petty wrote many stories over the years for the Temple Tower and I always enjoyed reading them. Mr. Petty was one of my role models, one of my mentors and I considered him one of my friends. I miss Mr. Petty and his words of wisdom. On a cold winter evening last week, as I was suffering from the winter-time blues, my wife told me I had a phone call. The call was from a resident of the Light House Mission. Our church has been preparing breakfast every

Friday since November, 2014 for the men and women who stay at the mission. Through this commit-ment I have made several new friends. The caller asked if I would be interested in going to lunch the next afternoon with some of the residents, to which I readily replied I would love to have lunch with some of the guys. The caller told me the residents had taken up a monetary collection and wanted to take me to lunch as their guest. My immediate response was to tell the caller that was not necessary, but he wouldn’t accept that, he told me they wanted very much to do this for me. I humbly accepted the invitation and with that phone call, my wintertime blues suddenly disappeared. The next day I picked up a few of the residents at the mission and we went to a local restau-rant, had lunch together and shared a moving discussion. The men thanked me for cooking and serv-ing breakfast and asked that I thank all the fine folks from United Methodist Temple. They especially wanted to thank “the family”, who are Don and Jan Wrin’s family, for coming every Friday as well. They have noticed the family comes every Friday morning even if it is below zero outside and they re-ally enjoy seeing the little boy that is part of the family who is always smiling and happy. They said it is so great to be served by smiling faces and receiving a warm, tasty meal. The men told me it means so much to them and that they look forward to Fridays for the wonderful food and kind people who prepare and serve that food. One of the men at the lunch told me he usually does not go to the chapel after breakfast but he heard Pastor Drane speak a few weeks ago and now he looks forward to chapel on Fridays. The men want to thank Pastor Drane and his wife for coming and being part of Friday mornings. They have been impressed that the pastor and his wife help prepare many of the breakfast meals.

After our meal the men paid for the lunch and again said they wished they had enough money

to take everyone from Temple out for a meal. I promised them I would relay their message to the

church members and this is the purpose of my letter. For those who do not know, the United Method-

ist Temple Men started this Breakfast on Friday at the mission and have paid and prepared the meal in

November and December. Don and Jan Wrin, along with their family, and I mean their entire family

including young Tanner, took over in January. They purchased, prepared and served the breakfast for

the month. The men at our lunch mentioned how nice it is to see a family together, cooking and serv-

ing a meal. I believe most of the men at the mission miss their families or wish they had a family to

share the simple things in life, like making breakfast. Many different organizations and individuals do-

nate money to the mission or help serve the meals, but the fact we crack the eggs ourselves, we make

them pancakes on the stove and are not serving them pre-cooked meals, that we serve them with a

warm welcome and a smile make a huge difference in the residents’ lives.

I hope I have kept my promise to the men and have said a proper thank you to the members

of United Methodist Temple. I am proud of my church and my church family. I hope we can continue

with the Friday Morning Breakfast at the mission. Jesus said that whoever does something for the

least does something for me.

God bless you all. Brad Kesler

Preschool Graduation took place on May 22, 2014. The sanctuary was filled with proud parents and grandparents celebrating a terrific year. The children sang songs and we watched a slide show. Soon the graduates were announced and I read off their names and what each one planned to be as an adult. We had many ideas, everything from Sam wanting to be a paleontologist (dinosaur expert) to Maggie wanted to be a princess fairy. Thank you to Jill, who accompanied us on the piano and led us in prayer. The happy, but somewhat teary, crowd enjoyed refresh-ments in fellowship hall afterwards. It is amazing to think how quickly our school year passed. Each year I am sad to see some of stu-dents heading off to Kindergarten, but I know they are ready to go and they will do well. It seems just yesterday these four and five year olds were just little two year olds arriving for the first time. How quickly they change and become so grown up! This summer we have a large group of kids enjoying Summer Mom's Day Out on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Several of our teachers are leading the kids through fun activities and enjoying the playground.
