This year, as United Way of Southwest Michigan celebrates its 75th anniversary, we are delighted to recognize and honor

United Way’s most generous donors for their leadership and deep commitment to our community. Through their caring

and strong philanthropic support, these extraordinary individuals play a critical role in partnering with United Way to

create real, lasting change in people’s lives in Berrien and Cass counties.

Collectively, the 921 members of our Tocqueville Society and Leadership Circle, have invested over $1,279,000 in the work of

United Way to ensure that children succeed in school, that families are financially stable, and that all people have an opportunity

to lead a healthy life. Without their generosity and unwavering commitment to our community, this important work would not be

possible.

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society of Southwest Michigan was founded in 1996 and is named after the French author Alexis de Tocqueville who, in the 1800’s, traveled extensively throughout the United States and wrote “Democracy in America”, a detailed study of society and politics. Tocqueville recognized and applauded the American desire to take a personal role in the advancement of society by combining philanthropy and government service.

The observation on philanthropy made by Alexis de Tocqueville in 1831 is true today. Americans understand that advancing the common good means creating opportunities for a better life for all.

The members of our Tocqueville Society are philanthropists who demonstrate extraordinary generosity to our community, by investing $10,000 or more annually in United Way. These individuals and couples are improving the lives of thousands of families and individuals in Berrien and Cass counties in the areas of education, financial stability, and health. In doing so, they are creating positive, lasting change in Southwest Michigan.
