Senior MwamboThe Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony that marks the transition of black graduates from their lives at the University of Miami to advanced education and professional careers. This ceremony was estab-lished in 1992 through the vision and love of a very dynamic and caring international student from Malawi, East Africa; Mr. Patrick A. Masala.

The term “Mwambo” literally means ceremonial rite of passage. It is Chichewa and comes to us from Malawi, East Africa where it was founded. The Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony designed to recognize the accomplishments of our black graduates and their families. It is a celebration of the transition from one stage of life to the next.

This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2:00pm in Gusman Hall. For additional infor-mation regarding the Senior Mwambo, please contact the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs at 305-284-2855.

What’s Going on.....ATTENTION!!!!! IMPORTANT!!!!New Pell Grant Eligibility LimitsDue to new legislation, beginning during the 2012-2013 academic year, student’s that are eligible to receive the Federal Pell Grant will be limited to 12 full-time semesters of eligibility. This change applies to all Federal Pell Grant eligible students. It is not limited to students who receive their First Federal Pell Grant on or after 2008-2009 award year. We will calculate the Pell Grant duration for a student by adding together each annual percentages of a student’s scheduled award that was actually disbursed to the student. For example, a student whose 2011-2012 Federal Pell Grant award was $5,550, but who re-ceived $2775 because she was only enrolled for one semester, will have used 50% of that award year’s schedules award. Similarly, a student who was enrolled three quarter time (9 credits) for the 2011-2012 award year would have used 75% of their scheduled award.

If you have any questions regarding this information or other financial aid questions please contact the Office of Financial Assistance Services at (305) 284-5212. Our advisors are available from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.

The 2012 Florida State Law Summer for Undergraduates Program will take place May 21 through June 14, 2012. Our Program is the largest of its kind and has become a model for other law schools nationally. Thanks to the continued support and generosity of Florida State Law alumnus Wayne Hogan ('72) and his wife, Patricia, the Summer for Undergraduates Program has a financially secure future. In 2000, the Hogans designated part of a $2 million gift to the law school to endow the program. Their 2003 gift of an additional $1 million allows the law school to permanently maintain the size of the program at approximate-ly 60 students each year.During the four-week program, students are engaged in activities covering three main components:Classroom Experience — Daily classes are taught by law school professors and writing instructors. Lectures simulate first-year law classes and familiarize students with the functions of the American legal system. Writing workshops help students to develop their writing and communication skills.Law School Admissions Process — Students are given the opportunity to talk to the admissions staff and committee regarding the important aspects of the law school application process. This includes practical workshops on completing the application, writing personal statements, LSAT preparation (provided by The Princeton Review), writing resumes and cover letters, financing law school, and individualized career planning.Careers in the Law — While the program is academic in nature, there are a number of exciting and enjoyable activities that take place outside of the classroom, such as: visits to the Florida Supreme Court and local law firms, moot court oral arguments, and visits from prominent attorneys in a variety of practice areas. Eligibility- College students enrolled at two-and four-year institutions, in all majors and from all backgrounds, are invited to apply following their fresh-man year. We particularly welcome students from groups historically underrepresented in the legal profession. Because one purpose of the program is to help students direct their remaining time in college to best prepare for law school, freshmen, sophomores and juniors are given preference in the admissions process. Students who will have earned their bachelor’s degree prior to the start of the program will not be eligible for admission.Program Costs-There is no tuition or room and board charge for this program. Florida State Law provides all meals, residence-hall accommodations, course materials and a travel stipend to all participants. Students are responsible for their travel expenses to and from Tallahassee. How to Apply- Applications for the 2012 program must be postmarked by Friday, March 23, 2012. The application process is very competitive. How-ever, each application is carefully reviewed in its entirety by the program's admissions committee prior to selection. In order to apply, students must provide the following: a completed application for admission, a current resume, a personal statement, one letter of recommendation, a current transcript

Once complete, please send your application to:APPLICATION MUST BE POSTMARKED BY MARCH 23

SOUTH FLORIDA WORKFORCE AND THE MIAMI-DADE EDUCATION PARTNER-SHIP ANNOUNCE SUMMER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

(MIAMI, March 12, 2012) – South Florida Workforce today announced the opening of registration for the Career Pathway Compact Summer Employment Pro-gram, created to provide young adults from low-income families the opportunity to enhance their work-readiness skills while also earning summer income. The program is part of the Miami-Dade Education Partnership unveiled by Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez during his February 28, 2012 State of the County Address.

The eight to ten week education internship program will provide participants with entry-level positions within governmental agencies, local businesses, and community-based non-profit organizations. Program selection will be done by lottery for candidates who have met all program requirements. “Connecting our students to our partners in the private and non-profit sectors is key to growing jobs and to keeping our most talented students from leaving our community for career opportunities elsewhere,” said Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “Enhancing the work-readiness skills of our young adults through special programs like the one created by South Florida Workforce is critical to the continued economic growth of our community,” he added.

Miami-Dade County, in conjunction with South Florida Workforce, is making $1.5 million dollars available for the program. “We appreciate the support from the County and Mayor Gimenez,” said Rick Beasley, Executive Director of South Florida Workforce. “This program will provide college age students from our disadvantaged communities with an invaluable opportunity to participate in paid internships with local business this summer, and in the process become better equipped for future job opportunities,” he added.

For more information or to register for the program, please visit: http://www.southfloridaworkforce.com/w/youthSummer2012.html About South Florida WorkforceThe South Florida Workforce delivery system provides high quality, customized employment and training solutions to workers and employers in support of economic development in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.
