I remember watching them being built on the blocks around our newly constructed house. My neighbors were all white folks. Most were Catholics with a sprinkling of Protestants. It seems that Jewish war veterans and their families were settled on the other side of Route 106 and down the road a mile. There were no black people in East Norwich. None in my public elementary school either. Only white folks of Catholic, Protestant and Jewish faiths. Down the hill from my development toward Oyster Bay, Lizza Brothers operated a sandpit. Sand and gravel sales were trucked around Long Island and used for the building of homes and highways. Black families had settled around the Lizza complex and the children attended Oyster Bay elementary and high school. Lack of contact for me and my neighbors in East Norwich, with people of color, was to our detriment. St. Dominic elementary school which I attended only in the eighth grade, due to my mother and father’s objection to the huge class sizes, 80 or so per class, had no black people, or Asians or non-Catholics. I was blessed that my parents taught me about racial equality and religious tolerance. The book of Genesis makes clear that God’s intention is one of harmony and unity. God’s creative energy is one of infinite love. That love fills the universe. The human person is the high point of God’s creative activity. The creation account goes on to tell us that human beings, exercising their free will, went against God’s will and his divine plan. Rupture and fragmentation, conflict and violence erupted, contrary to the will of God who is perfect love. Racism is one form of rupture. Racism is a great sin against the dignity of human beings; a toxic disease that underlies divisions in our society - a bigotry that brings violence and hate and destruction. In 1979, the United States bishops published a pastoral letter on racism. Recent events in Charlottesville where neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and KuKlux clan members marched, makes the bishops’ pastoral extremely relevant for 2017. “Racism is a sin: a sin that divides the human family, blots out the image of God among specific members of that family, and violates the fundamental human dignity of those called to be children of the same Father.” (US Catholic Bishops Pastoral Letter on Racism 1979)

“Unity, Peace, and Equality among allGod’s Children”

“God created man in his own image; in the image of God he createdhim; male and female he created them… And God saw everything thathe had made, and it was very good…” (Genesis 1:27; 31)

When my Bronx born and raised father got out of the Army at theend of the second world war, he met my mom from Queens County.

They married in 1946 and I was born in 1947. Our home on Long Island, East Norwich, hadbeen a potato farm bought by a developer. Soon Ranch and split-level homes wereconstructed. I remember watching them being built on the blocks around our newlyconstructed house.

My neighbors were all white folks. Most were Catholics with a sprinkling of Protestants. It seems that Jewish war veterans and their families were settled on the other side of Route106 and down the road a mile. There were no black people in East Norwich. None in mypublic elementary school either. I wasblessed that my parents taught me about racial equality and religious tolerance.

The book of Genesis makes clear that God’s intention is one of harmony and unity. God’screative energy is one of infinite love. That love fills the universe. The human person is thehigh point of God’s creative activity. The creation account goes on to tell us that humanbeings, exercising their free will, went against God’s will and his divine plan. (cont’d)

Racism is the belief that some human beings are superior to others because of their race. Awhite supremacist would say that people of color are inferior and not fully human. Contradictingthis, St. Paul tells us: “There does not exist among you Jew or Greek, slave or free, male orfemale. All are one in Christ Jesus.”

My dad, like the millions of other Allied soldiers who fought against the Nazis and their Aryancreed, went to war against anti-Semitism and racist creeds. The Allies were trying to stop theextermination of millions of Jews, Gypsies, ethnic Poles, Ukrainians and Belarusians, homosexuals and disabled people. 500,000 American soldiers lost their lives in defense of humandignity and the equality of all God’s people. They were willing to give their lives to uphold thefreedoms and unalienable rights that are meant for all people - and upheld by our USConstitution, and by Almighty God.

We cannot deny that racism has been part of the history of America since our Europeancolonization. The story is a sad one of slavery and economic exportation, brutal repression anddispossession from their lands. This tragic legacy has resulted in a great need to rebalance oursociety so that those who are on the bottom rungs due to the racist and predatory attitudes ofothers, may reclaim some of their rightful dignity and equality before God, and in our society.Affirmative action tries to make this happen. Our country has become a wonderful melting pot of people’s from all over the world coming together in solidarity and peace. All arewelcome!

It is up to us to root out from our lives any dispositions and attitudes that lead us to believethat anyone is superior to anyone else. Rather we are to think of others, says St. Paul, as “betterthan yourself.” This attitude of humility and boundless love is our disposition and firm belief asCatholics.

In today’s readings, St. Paul reminds the Romans - and us - that allthings come from God: “For from Him and through Him and for Himall things are.” Good stewards understand that all is gift and sharegenerously the gifts of time, talent and treasure with which they’vebeen blessed.

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who strive tomake their gifts grow and to share them lovingly, in justice, withothers.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATIONFOR THE WEEK

We all know the given answers to the question: who isJesus? Son of God, Son of Man, Messiah, Lord, and theChrist are some that immediately come to mind. But,who do you say that Jesus is? Who we need or wantJesus to be becomes the key to unlocking a relationshipwith God. For some, Jesus is just a prophet, a wise man,or an inspirational figure in history. These labels keepJesus in the past and prevent us from really having aliving, vibrant relationship with him. If Jesus is more thanthis to you, then who is he and what purpose does heserve in your life?

AN EXAMINATION OF OUR CONSCIENCES ON RACISM AND ANTI-SEMITISM

The tragic events that took place at Charlottesville calls all of us to examine our hearts and souls before God.In order for our nation and our church to be healed of the sins of racism and anti-Semitism, each one of usneeds to reflect and be healed. We may not think of ourselves as anti-Semitic or racist or prejudiced, but if we are brutally honest we must allrecognize biases in our attitudes. Few of us, if indeed any of us, black, white, American Indian, or Asian, canclaim exemption from prejudice. To think of others as the enemy, out of fear and ignorance, is common to usall. We need to be converted, changed by the power of the Holy Spirit and set free to recognize God in allpeople.

Here are some questions we can ask ourselves:How have I been silent on the events of the past weeks? How have I been silent on racism? How have I participated in the sin of anti-Semitism?Have any of my words or actions belittled others? What fears do I hold about people that are different from me?How do I consciously or unconsciously act on those fears? In the choices I make, in my actions or words orattitudes? How have I failed to speak up on behalf of those who are being mistreated because of their race or religiousbelief?

Have I asked our Lord Jesus Christ to heal me of all prejudice?

How has your summer been? Can it possiblybe the last week in August already?! It seems like justthe other day I remarked how it was the start of August, one of the longer 31 day months. August can bebittersweet though.

As a child growing up in the Midwest, I knewthat school would be starting during the second half ofthe month. You would no sooner start to get into thegroove of new teachers, classes, friends etc. when theunofficial end of summer, Labor Day weekend, wouldcome upon us. But for students summer had alreadyended.

Now as an adult I look forward to the fall, myfavorite season for many reasons. Mentally I think webecome more disciplined, even if by default. Maybe thecool crisp air has something to do with it. The lazy daysof summer are gone, but may have given us a nicebreak. September tends to bring new beginnings, newopportunities and a chance for reflection. “How does allof this tie into stewardship?” you might ask.

Perhaps we can reflect on what stewardship canmean to us on a spiritual basis. The summary of theU.S. Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on Stewardship tells usthis meaning of what it is to be a Christian Steward:

“As each one has received a gift, use it toserve one another as good stewards of God’s variedgrace” (1 Pt 4:10).

What identifies a steward? Safeguardingmaterial and human resources and using themresponsibly are one answer; so is generous giving oftime, talent, and treasure. But being a Christiansteward means more. As Christian stewards, wereceive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate themresponsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.

HOSPITALITY/FELLOWSHIPBEGINS AGAIN AFTER SUNDAYMASSES ON SEPTEMBER 10TH

Isn’t it wonderful to know that we can give back to ourLord by sharing our God given gifts with others, andthat it can start from being grateful? Look at theremarkable Eclipse that just occurred that was witnessedby people all across the nation. Even though it was nota total eclipse here in New York, it brought peopletogether to witness in awe a gift in our universe. Andpeople shared that gift just by joining with others tomarvel in it, and then sharing their experience with thoseof us who weren’t able to witness it.

God’s gifts are there for the taking day in andday out, but are we receiving them gratefully, cultivatingthem responsibly, sharing them lovingly in justice withothers, and returning them with increase to the Lord?Food for thought in the upcoming “cool, crisp” autumndays.

God Bless You.St. Kilian Stewardship Committee

“Go out to all the world and tell the good news!” Joining aCatholic parish like St. Kilian’s, means participating in thework of the local church. Where is the Lord calling me,inspired by the Spirit given to me in baptism, to build thekingdom of God? Is the Lord calling me to minister in theparish outreach efforts of St. Kilian? Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, giving drink to the thirsty-staffing the foodpantry, driving folks to doctor ’s appointments, assistingimmigrants in their adjustment to society in a new land, advising and giving counsel.... Or is the Lord calling me tohand on the faith in the parish religious education programs?Am I called to prepare young people for their first holyCommunion or the sacrament of reconciliation (confession)with the sacrament of confirmation? Do I hear the Lord callingmy name to bring holy Communion to the sick or to assist inthe distribution of the Eucharist at Sunday and weekdaymasses... Or proclaiming the word of God as a lector... Orassisting in the taking up of the offertory collection to assistthe work of the church as an usher? Is the Lord urging me touse my voice to proclaim God’s praises as a leader of songor a member of one of the parish choirs? Do I feel that I havebeen given gifts to console the grieving, comfort the bereavedas a minister of consolation? Am I being called to assistengaged couples in their journey toward the sacrament ofmatrimony? Have I been called to give witness to theimportance of the sacrament of baptism in our parishpreparation programs to young couples with newborn babies?

President John F. Kennedy famously asked ournation: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but whatyou can do for your country.” As baptized Catholics, weregister in the parish to become fully engaged in the work ofthe local church. We do not register to get something forourselves, but to give ourselves away in love for Christ andGod’s people.

The Catholic Church, St. Kilian Church has doorsopen to all. We receive our sacraments here; participate atmass, and live the gospel. St. Kilian’s is our parish. It is ourhome. It will be as warm and wonderful, as caring andunderstanding, as welcoming and invitational, as you and Iare.

Register for a ministry! Be a good steward; acaretaker of all that Christ has entrusted to you. Ministry isnot an option, but a responsibility. All baptized believers, byvirtue of our baptism are to spend our lives proclaiming thelove of Christ by our words and actions. How will the Lord useyou as his instrument?

Come to the Eucharist weekly. By our participation atmass, the high point of our week and of our lives, we areenergized by the power of God; and in our sharing in theBody and Blood of Christ, we are transformed to live as Christlived.

Register by calling the rectory at (516)249-0127 or go towww.stkilian.com to register on-line.

...JUST GET OUT OF THEBOATRecently we listened to t h epassage in St. Matthew’s gospelabout St.Peter attempting towalk on the water during a ragingstorm. When he saw Jesus doing it

he was incredulous but asked Jesus to let him do thesame. To his credit, Peter did get out of the boat andwas doing fine until he realized the force of the storm.Being short on faith, he panicked and, fearing for hislife, he called out to Jesus to save him. And thencomes that most beautiful line,“...Jesus at once stretched out His handand caught him.”

Peter didn’t do too well with walking on thewater but we have to give him credit for getting out ofthe boat. Had he not given it a try he may never havefully understood the saving power of Jesus’ ownpersonal love for him.

This story comes to mind when talking to folkswho are pro-life but have a fear of getting activelyinvolved. We who do prolife work can tell you that thegrace and strength comes with the doing, as do theability to love and the words that are needed toconvey that love. Only love can open hearts and mindsto bring hope and healing to those who are hurting andconfused.

The present Culture that we live in is indeed araging storm and the waters are dark and deep. Wehave felt the strong arm of Jesus around us andcountless times have seen Him reach out to mothersin need to lovingly guide them to safety.

When Peter asked Jesus to let him walkthrough the storm with him Jesus simply replied,”COME”.
