III. Chapter activities

This report contain the activities since on December 2017 to October2018. on December we received the OSA traveling lecturer, AlvaroCasas, who was ones of CUVO cofounders in 2006, also we made aBarbecue as leisure activity for year 2017.

In the first semester of 2018 we did the IDL photo contest, and on May16th we did conference of International day of light for universitycommunity.

On June we participated in science fair called “Carpa de Melquiades” inour university, and on July we participated in first optics and photonicssummer school of Universidad del Valle like assistants and logisticalsupport.

In the second semester we prepared the coffee break with our advisor,Efrain Solarte, and we wanna still do it we other professors of physicsdepartment.

a) OSA Traveling Lecturer.

In this picture we are lunch with traveling lecturer Alvaro Casas and ouradvisor Efrain Solarte after we attend of lecturer's presentation withpurpose of chapter management advice and career developmentadvice for us it was a pleasure to meet him because he is a graduate ofour university and co-founder of our chapter.

b) Integration Activity on December 2017.

To the end of this year we did the leisureactivity with a delicious barbecue, weinvited as current members as oldmember like Astrid Barreiro, AngelicaPerez, Marcela Barona and Vanessa Olayawhose were chapter officers.

This day was a very nice, we not only ate,we dance too.

c) IDL PHOTO CONTEST.

As part of the activities proposed for theinternational day of the light, our chapterconducted the first photo contest inside ourcampus and for all the university community. Thishad a great acceptance.

We received nearly of 86 pictures in differentsubjects related to the light such as the interactionbetween light and nature, or people, etc. we werejury and selected 10 photos, and the people votedfor their favorite, this was a very nice experiencefor us.

We reward the three most voted. The winnersexpressed to be very happy with the prizes, specially the first place which received a course of 4months in a school of photography of our city.

Next we present you the best ten photographsevaluated between us and the people.

1 PLACE: “60" by Alejandra Herrera.

This photograph shows how humanbeing is constantly related with light, and the different ways in which youcan get to manipulate it for your life.

It is interesting to see how the lines oflight are frozen thanks to thecomplicity of the time that can be usedto expose the photo, arriving to createdifferent compositions, and leaving thebeautiful reflection of meaning ofphotography.

Equipment used to capture this imagewas a Nikon D5500 camera, withF/ 4.5, exposure time 10s, and ISO.

The photograph is a continuous exposure themovement of light on a child mechanicalwheel, the goal was to follow the path oflight on the same axis, make an artistic andharmonic photo with the colors of the light ofthe mechanical game. I used the 3.2 secondsExactly otherwise The color whitePredominance and we can not see thecolors, is the same example that newton disk.

In the tropics we receive sunlightapproximately 12 hours a day, withtime variations in other parts of theearth. This radiation allows theprimary producers, the plants, tosustain the life of the planet. So,when we think of light and itsinteraction with nature, we haveonly to imagine light as the motorthat drives life at all scales.

d) International Day of Light May 16.

We gave a lecture about the photography from thepoint of view of physics with one special guest, thedirector of “La Escuela de Fotografía del Valle”, schoolin which the first place took the course. Many peopleattended the lecture. It was counted among them, physicist and keen of the photography.

We also made a brief recruitment speech from which3 students showed interest about joining in andnowadays belongs to CUVO.

At the end of the event we had lunch with ourmembers, the special guest and the three winners ofphoto contest. It was very nice to share with them,we met about the world of the photography. andThey also enjoyed meting about us and oureducational work.

e) Science fair “Carpa de Melquiades”.

We also took advantage of one science fairinside of the Universidad del Valle called LaCarpa de Melquiades to participate with ourchapter in the subject of optics. On this waywe exposed the experiments you have sent us,we made use of a dark room and showed howthe lenses work, what sort of lenses there are,how an optical fiber works, the hologram, howto make a homemade laser microscope, whichare the phenomena reflection, diffraction andfluorescence.

This was a great impact event that had aduration of 3 days in a row and whose most ofthe assistants were kids in school age, thoughthe event was open for every person whowished to came. This was a very hard work forus, needless to say the we ended up weary.Nevertheless it was worthy for us becausemost of the assistants mentioned that thesection of optics was their favorite so much sothat we had a big queue waiting for see ourexperiments all time.

f) Optics and Photonics Summer School.

This is the first edition of the Summer School ofOptics and Photonics organized by the Faculty ofNatural and Exact Sciences and the QuantumOptics research group in charge of our advisor, with the central theme of Nonlinear Optics andits Applications in Bio-photonics.

The I Summer School in Optics and Photonics washeld Between July 16 and 19, whose main themewas Nonlinear Optics and its applications in Bio-photonics. The School was had 12 lectures, 3extended courses, 1 poster session and a LIDARseminar. It was attended by six speakers fromItaly, the United States, Sweden and Spain.

We had the pleasure of participating by attendingconferences and as logistics support.

g) Coffee Break

We started this coffee initiative as amonthly space to talk amongclassmates, teachers and guests, notonly about matters related to the fieldof study and professional life, but alsoabout current issues, accompanied by acoffee and some sandwiches .

At the end of September we made thefirst coffee with our advisor, EfrainSolarte. Between the assisted werephysics students of different semestersand the new guys of the chapter.

IV. Planned activities for the future

a) INTEGRATION ACTIVITY 2018

As integration of the current year, we want to take a walk on a farm justoutside the city and in this way to be able to share as a family. The idea is tostay overnight, and for this we will need to rent the place, buy the food wewill consume, and if possible get a means of transport for this we needaround 300 USD

We will do this activity either at the end of December or beginning next year.
