A ideia de Universidade que a UMinho tem

vindo a construir assenta na centralidade da

investigação como fator de qualificação do

ensino e de diferenciação da interação com

a sociedade. Essa ideia é consolidada numa

Instituição aberta e comprometida com os

seus valores e com os seus parceiros, sejam

entidades congéneres ou atores sociais,

económicos e culturais.

Este posicionamento, que a UMinho assume

pela natureza da sua cultura institucional e

por convicção da sua Comunidade Académica,

afigura-se essencial para enfrentar os

desafios do conhecimento, da educação

superior e do desenvolvimento no século XXI.

Neste contexto, a UMinho, enquanto domus do conhecimento,

é chão aberto a todos os que querem participar desta visão e da sua

irrecusável construção.

The idea of University developed by the

University of Minho (UMinho) is based on

the centrality of research for the qualification

of teaching as well as for the differentiation

of the interaction with society. That idea is

supported by an open Institution committed

to its values and partners, whether they

are similar entities or social, economic and

cultural stakeholders.

Such a distinctive stance, driven by UMinho’s

institutional culture and its Academic

Community believes, is vital to face the

challenges brought about by knowledge,

higher education and development in the

twenty first-century. In this context, as

domus of knowledge, UMinho is the open ground to all those who want

to participate in this vision and in its irrefusable construction.

The University is both material and intangible heritage that belongs

to all: those who work on it on a daily basis – professors, researchers

and technical and administrative staff; those who nourish and renew

learning approaches, every time more

diversified and benefiting from stimulating

cognitive experiences, including those

arising from distance learning.

It is open ground in the shared way science is made and made available,

following the more advanced practices of open access to publications

and scientific data, a movement which the University pioneered. Open

science is a new paradigm in the production of knowledge and UMinho

will continue to be proactive in this domain.

It is open ground to the world and its citizens, students, researchers

and lecturers, welcoming their ideological, cultural, religious and

ethnic differences, in an inclusive and warm embrace. It is always

open and attentive to students experiencing financial difficulties,

ensuring that those constraints will not be an obstacle to higher

will find the adequate infrastructures and the necessary monitoring

for their academic activities on campus.

Chão abertoOpen ground


O compromisso da UMinho com políticas e práticas de

acesso aberto ao conhecimento científico remonta ao ano

de 2004, quando a Universidade subscreveu a Declaração

de Berlim e passou a integrar o grupo de instituições que

foram pioneiras desse movimento.

Seguiu-se a criação do repositório institucional,

o RepositórUM e todo um trabalho da motivação

da Comunidade Académica, inicialmente numa

fase voluntária e, desde o dia 1 de Janeiro de 2011,

com obrigatoriedade para o corpo de docentes e

investigadores. Estas iniciativas foram acompanhadas do

desenvolvimento da necessária infraestrutura de suporte

e de uma estratégia de participação em projetos nacionais

e europeus para soluções avançadas neste

domínio, incluindo a integração multi-

institucional e interoperabilidade.

Esta estratégia foi assumida pelos diferentes

níveis hierárquicos da UMinho, tendo tido

um grande envolvimento dos responsáveis

das unidades de investigação. Em termos

operacionais, foi coordenada e implementada

pelos Serviços de Documentação que hoje

são, reconhecidamente, uma entidade de

referência neste domínio a nível europeu.

O futuro da produção científica mundial verá

um enorme aprofundamento e generalização

das práticas de acesso aberto, incluindo

ao nível da disponibilização de dados, em

resultado dos seus benefícios para as comunidades

científicas e das imposições de organismos financiadores.

O futuro assistirá igualmente a uma crescente

desmaterialização de processos e integração

de plataformas informacionais.

Neste contexto, a UMinho apostará claramente no

reforço das suas políticas de acesso aberto, de modo

articulado com a FCT e com parceiros europeus, muito

especialmente em metodologias fiáveis de credibilização

e disponibilização de dados científicos. A UMinho está

igualmente envolvida na integração automática da

informação depositada no RepositórioUM com o seu

sistema de informação interno, nomeadamente para

produção de relatórios e processos de avaliação.

UMinho’s commitment to the

policies and practices of open

access to scientific knowledge

dates back to 2004, when the

University signed the Berlin

Declaration and joined the group

of institutions pioneering this

movement.

That was followed by the creation of the institutional repository,

RepositóriUM, and a comprehensive work to motivate the Academic

Community, initially on a voluntary basis and, since the 1st of

January 2011, mandatory to the teaching and research staff. These

initiatives were followed by the development of the necessary

support infrastructure and by a strategy

of participation in national and European

projects for advanced solutions in this area,

including multi-institutional integration and

interoperability.

This strategy was adopted by the different

hierarchical levels of UMinho, having

had a great involvement of the people

responsible for the research units. In

operational terms, it was coordinated

and implemented by the Documentation

Services, which are today recognised

in Europe as a reference in this field.

The future of worldwide scientific production

will see an increasing development and

generalisation of the practice of open access, particularly concerning

the availability of data, as a result of its benefits to the scientific

communities and the stipulations set forth by funding bodies. In the

future, we will also see a growing dematerialisation of the processes

and the integration of information platforms.

In this context, UMinho will heavily invest in the strengthening of its

policies of open access, in articulation with the FCT and its European

partners, especially in reliable methodologies for the accreditation and

availability of scientific data.

UMinho is also involved in the automatic integration of the

information deposited in RepositóriUM with its internal information

system, in particular for the production of reports and processes

of evaluation.

Do RepositóriUM aos projetos de ciência aberta From RepositóriUM to open science projects

Na sequência do seu pioneirismo no

estabelecimento de um repositório e de uma

política institucional de auto-arquivo, a

UMinho afirmou-se como uma instituição de

referência no panorama do acesso aberto e da

ciência aberta, não apenas no plano nacional

mas também à escala global.

Os projetos e iniciativas em que a UMinho,

através dos seus Serviços de Documentação,

tem estado envolvida (9 projetos europeus –

7 no 7ºPQ e 2 H2020 – e 1 projeto nacional

renovado anualmente), em muitos casos

com uma posição liderante, representam um

dos principais eixos da ação institucional

neste domínio, contribuindo para a partilha

do conhecimento, junto da comunidade científica e da sociedade em geral e,

simultaneamente, para maior visibilidade e impacto dos resultados da investigação

que se desenvolve na Universidade.

A atividade da UMinho tem sido centrada em quatro dimensões. A primeira

é a das infraestruturas, com a coordenação científica e técnica do RCAAP

(Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto – www.rcaap.pt), a principal infraestrutura

nacional de acesso aberto, e a participação na coordenação do projeto OpenAIRE

(www.openaire.eu), a infraestrutura da Comissão Europeia que suporta as políticas

de acesso aberto e dados abertos estabelecidas no 7º Programa Quadro e no

Horizonte 2020.

A segunda dimensão é a das políticas, em que se salienta a participação

nos projetos MedOANet e PASTEUR4OA (www.pasteur4oa.eu), que

estabeleceram recomendações e modelos de políticas de acesso aberto para

financiadores de ciência e instituições

que realizam investigação.

A terceira área é a da formação e

disseminação onde, para além da

participação no projeto NECOBELAC,

se destaca a coordenação do projeto FOSTER

(www.foster.eu), que disseminou os

princípios e as práticas de acesso aberto

e ciência aberta entre os investigadores

e outros participantes no Espaço Europeu

de Investigação, através de mais 100 ações

presenciais e 25 cursos online em que

participaram mais de 6300 pessoas.

Finalmente a UMinho tem assumido um

papel muito relevante na cooperação

e alinhamento internacional, com a

participação ativa na Confederação Mundial

de Repositórios de Acesso Aberto (COAR)

e a dinamização da cooperação lusófona,

nomeadamente com o apoio à criação de

repositórios em Moçambique, Cabo-Verde

e Timor-Leste.

No ano de 2017 a UMinho participará em 3

novos projetos europeus H2020 – OpenAIRE-

connect, FIT4RRI e FOSTERplus (este último

coordenado pela UMinho) – neste domínio,

continuando a afirmar o seu compromisso e

o seu trabalho de promoção da ciência aberta.


7 FP7 and 2 H2020 – and 1 annually-renewed national project),

playing a leading role in some of them, epitomize one of the major

axis of its institutional action in this field, thus contributing to

knowledge sharing among the scientific community and society in

general and, at the same time, to greater visibility and impact of the

results associated with the research carried out at the University.

UMinho’s activity has been focused on four dimensions. The first

one works at infrastructure level, with scientific and technical

coordination of RCAAP (Scientific Open Access Repository

of Portugal – www.rcaap.pt), the main national open access

infrastructure, and participation in the coordination of the OpenAIRE

project (www.openaire.eu), the European Commission’s infrastructure

that supports open access and open data policies set out within the

scope of the 7th Framework Program and Horizon 2020.

The second dimension is policy-led, with

special mention to the participation in

MedOANet and PASTEUR4OA (www.

pasteur4oa.eu) projects, which have actually

set forth recommendations and open access

policy models for science funding bodies and

research institutions alike.

The third area is associated with

training and dissemination. In addition

to participating in the NECOBELAC

project, UMinho has also coordinated the

FOSTER project (Facilitate Open Science

Training for European Research – www.

foster.eu), designed to disseminate the

principles and practices of open access

and open science between researchers and other participants in

the European Research Area, through over 100 face-to-face actions

and 25 online courses, attended by more than 6 300 people.

Finally, UMinho has been playing an important role in

international cooperation and alignment, resulting from

the active participation in the Confederation of Open Access

Repositories (COAR) and the promotion of Lusophone

cooperation, namely by supporting the establishment of

repositories in Mozambique, Cape Verde and East Timor.

In 2017 UMinho will participate in 3 new H2020 project – OpenAIRE-

connect, FIT4RRI and FOSTERplus (the latter coordinated by

UMinho) – in this field, thereby continuing to consolidate its

commitment and work towards the promotion of open science.

Following its pioneering approach in establishing

a repository and an institutional self-archiving policy, the University

of Minho has been recognized as an institution of reference both in

the open access and open science domains, not only at national level

but also at the global scale.

The involvement of UMinho, through its Documentation Services,

in a wide range of projects and initiatives (9 European projects –

chamando “ciência aberta”.

O lançamento de iniciativas como o repositório institucional da

Universidade do Minho (RepositóriUM), constituído com o objetivo

de armazenar, preservar e permitir acesso à produção intelectual

da Universidade em formato digital, ou a definição de políticas

institucionais “fortes” sobre o acesso aberto à produção científica

foram marcantes para a afirmação de um novo modo de entender

a circulação do conhecimento científico e de novas formas de

estruturar as relações entre as comunidades científicas e a sociedade.

O caminho aberto pela Declaração de Budapeste sobre o Acesso Aberto,

em 2002, conheceu, na última década e meia, importantes

e nem sempre convergentes desenvolvimentos;

em qualquer caso, ao longo deste período,

o número de instituições de ensino superior

e de investigação, de agências de

financiamento, de Estados e organizações de

Estados que se comprometeram com o Acesso

Aberto, e mais recentemente com a Ciência

Aberta, configura-os como movimentos

imparáveis, desenhando-se, assim, um novo

cenário relativamente à produção, distribuição

e apropriação do conhecimento científico.

O futuro da Universidade, a sua afirmação

nos seus diferentes eixos de atividade é

indissociável do modo como ela se venha

a posicionar neste novo cenário.

A consideração dos dados de investigação

como área que vem suscitando orientações

e práticas, de diversas instâncias, no sentido

da sua partilha em acesso aberto coloca

novos desafios e exige novos requisitos

a que a Universidade não pode ficar alheia.

A formulação de políticas institucionais

neste domínio, a identificação e a

construção das infraestruturas necessárias,

a definição dos serviços de gestão de

dados a disponibilizar são elementos

de uma estratégia que se encontra em

desenvolvimento, assegurando-se que

a UMinho, nesta área, possa continuar

a manter uma posição de relevo.

A Ciência Aberta aumentará a visibilidade da investigação desenvolvida

na instituição e garantirá a preservação da memória intelectual da

Universidade. Maximizará, também, o impacto económico e social da

investigação, favorecendo a inovação e a transferência de conhecimento

para o desenvolvimento de novos produtos e serviços, e a resposta aos

grandes desafios societais e ambientais que hoje enfrentamos.

Nesta perspetiva, a valorização da responsabilidade da Instituição para

com os cidadãos não é certamente de menor relevo. A ciência aberta tem

um enorme potencial de estruturação de novas formas de relação entre

as instituições que produzem conhecimento científico e a sociedade,

designadamente ao disponibilizar instrumentos que permitam a múltiplas

agências e atores refletir, de modo informado, sobre a adequação

da investigação, muitas vezes por si financiada, com os valores e as

necessidades das nossas sociedades, abertas e democráticas.

The University of Minho has assumed over the years

a pioneering role and a major role in the field of what is

now called “open science”.

The launching of initiatives such as the institutional

repository of the University of Minho (RepositóriUM),

with the objective of storing, preserving and allowing

access to the university’s intellectual production

in digital format, or the definition of “strong”

institutional policies on open access To scientific

production were striking for the affirmation of a new

way of understanding the circulation of scientific

knowledge and of new ways of structuring relations

between scientific communities and society.

The path opened by the Budapest Declaration

on Open Access in 2002 has been important

and not always convergent in the last decade

and a half; In any case, during this period,

the number of higher education and research

institutions, funding agencies, states and

organisations of states that have committed

to Open Access, and more recently with Open

Science, constitute them as unstoppable

movements, thus designing a new scenario

regarding the production, distribution and

appropriation of scientific knowledge.

The future of the University, its

affirmation in its different axes of

activity is inseparable from the way it

will position itself in this new scenario.

Consideration of research data as an area that has evolved

orientations and practices from various levels towards open access

sharing poses new challenges and demands new requirements that

the University can not ignore. The formulation of institutional policies

in this field, the identification and construction of the necessary

infrastructures, the definition of the data management services to be

made available are elements of a strategy that is under development,

ensuring that UMinho in this area can continue to maintain a

prominent position. It will also maximize the economic and social

impact of research, fostering innovation and knowledge transfer for

the development of new products and services, and addressing the

major societal and environmental challenges we face today.

The Open Science will increase the visibility of the research developed

in the institution and will guarantee the preservation of the

intellectual memory of the University.

In this perspective, the valuation of the Institution’s responsibility

towards citizens is certainly not of minor importance. Open-ended

science has an enormous potential for structuring new forms

of relationship between the institutions that produce scientific

knowledge and society, in particular by providing tools that allow

multiple agencies and actors to reflect informally on the adequacy

of research, often financed by it, with the values and needs of our

societies, open and democratic.

Educação para todosEducation for all

A UMinho registou, em 2016, uma elevada procura dos seus cursos de

formação inicial, tendo obtido a mais elevada taxa de preenchimento

de sempre das vagas disponibilizadas na 1ª fase do CNA (98,4%);

3571 novos alunos de licenciatura e mestrado integrado ingressaram

na UMinho em 2016-17, cerca de mais duas centenas que no ano

letivo transato. A abertura da licenciatura em Criminologia e Justiça

Criminal veio reforçar a oferta educativa da Universidade.

A Universidade continuou a prestar atenção ao recrutamento dos seus

alunos: 200 dos melhores estudantes de

escolas secundárias e colégios participaram

num programa especial de formação, dando-

lhes a conhecer a realidade da Instituição.

A divulgação da oferta educativa conheceu

um momento importante na 2ª edição da

Feira Educativa e Formativa, realizada em

Guimarães, promovida pela Universidade

em colaboração com os municípios da região.

A criação do ObservatoriUM materializou

a preocupação da Instituição com os

percursos académicos dos seus estudantes,

como condição de prevenção de fenómenos

de insucesso escolar e de abandono.

A Universidade prosseguiu a sua política

de promoção do mérito académico

e atribuiu bolsas de excelência aos melhores estudantes de

cada ano de cada curso de formação inicial e viu reforçada a

intervenção nesta área de organizações da sociedade civil que,

progressivamente, vêm concedendo bolsas a estudantes da UMinho.

A política de internacionalização da Universidade no domínio

da educação traduziu-se no reforço da atração de estudantes

internacionais e de estudantes em mobilidade, bem como

na expansão de modalidades de formação em associação

com instituições de ensino superior de outros países.

Finalmente, a inauguração da Biblioteca da UMinho em Azurém

veio acrescentar novos espaços e novos recursos aos já disponíveis,

melhorando significativamente as condições de trabalho

oferecidas a estudantes, professores e investigadores.

Throughout 2016, the courses offered by UMinho were in high

demand. As far as initial training is concerned, the University

achieved the highest completion rate of vacancies available

in the first phase of the CNA (98.4%); a total of 3.571 new

undergraduate and integrated masters students entered UMinho

in 2016-17, about two hundred more than in the previous school

year. The opening of the Degree in Criminology and Criminal

Justice contributed to this on a positive basis, by bringing added

value to the University’s educational offer.

Similarly, the University has continued to pay particular

attention to the recruitment of its students: 200 of the best

students from secondary and private schools attended a

special training program promoted by UMinho, in order to

raise their awareness towards the reality of the institution.

The dissemination of the Institution’s

educational offer was also a major stage

during the 2nd edition of the Education

and Training Fair, held in Guimarães,

promoted by the University in collaboration

with the municipalities of the region. The

creation of the ObservatoriUM embodied the

Institution’s concern towards knowing the

academic pathways of its students, so as to

prevent such phenomena like school failure

and dropout rates.

Following the approach aimed at promoting

academic merit, the University pursued its

policy of awarding excellence grants to the

best students of each year from each initial

training course. This initiative contributed

to reinforcing the role of stakeholders and civil society

organizations in this field, by increasing the number of grants

awarded to UMinho students.

The University’s internationalization policy in the field of

education led to strengthening the Institution’s attractiveness

of international students and students under academic mobility

programs, as well as the expansion of training modalities in

association with the corresponding higher education institutions

in other countries.

Finally, the inauguration of the UMinho Library in Azurém has

managed to add new spaces and new resources to those already

on offer, thereby significantly improving the working conditions

available for students, teachers and researchers.


Investigação para o futuro Research for the future

A UMinho é uma Universidade completa que assume uma ambição

permanente de ser um espaço aberto de criação de conhecimento

e de inovação, que seja relevante e de âmbito internacional.

É hoje claramente uma Universidade de Investigação. Isso

reflete-se na posição que tem vindo a assumir nos principais

rankings internacionais. É também muito claro o aumento do

numero de publicações científicas, citações, e dos diversos outputs

científicos, ao longo dos últimos anos.

A Investigação desenvolvida procura

responder a desafios de um Mundo cada

A UMinho tem sido capaz de angariar, de forma crescente, grandes

projetos europeus, nos programas do Horizonte 2020, incluindo os

do Conselho Europeu de Investigação (ERC), assumindo a liderança

de inúmeros grandes projetos, e sendo a única Universidade que

coordena projetos em todas as tipologias do programa Widening

da Comissão Europeia (CE). Participa em todas as parcerias

internacionais lançadas pelo governo Português e está envolvida

em variados projetos de colaboração bilateral com as mais diversas

regiões do globo, estando ainda muito ativa em projetos de

colaboração transfronteiriça e do espaço Euro-Atlântico. A atividade

internacional não diminuiu, pelo contrário, reforçou a forte

implementação da UMinho na sua região e no País e a relevância

da sua investigação para as políticas Regionais e Nacionais.

UMinho is a complete University that assumes a permanent

ambition to become an open space for the creation of knowledge

and innovation, that is both relevant and international. Today, it is

clearly a Research University. That fact is reflected in the position

obtained in the main international rankings. The increase in the

number of scientific publications, citations, and of the several

scientific outputs, throughout the years, is also much evident.

The research developed aims to respond

to challenges of a World more and more

global, producing and disseminating new

knowledge, and reinforcing the needed

collaborations and the participation in

international initiatives, always with the

goal of generating multiplying effects in

the scientific, socioeconomic and cultural

development of the Region and the Country.

The main area of action of UMinho is the

European Research Area (ERA), without

diminishing, or depreciating in any

way, the focus in the interaction with

the Community of Portuguese-speaking

Countries (CPLP) and the dynamic promotion

of activities in other geographies.

UMinho has been capable of increasingly raising large European

projects, on the scope of Horizon 2020 programmes, including

the European Research Council (ERC), assuming the leadership

of numerous large projects and being the only University that

coordinates projects in all of the existing measures under the

Widening program of the European Commission (EC). It participates

in every international partnership launched by the Portuguese

government and is involved in several projects of bilateral

collaboration with the most diverse regions of the globe, while

also being very active in projects of cross-border cooperation

and of the Euro-Atlantic programme. The international activity

did not diminish, on the contrary, it reinforced the strong

implementation of UMinho in its Region and in the Country and the

relevance of its research for the Regional and National policies.


The University of Minho is actively involved

in more than 150 strategic partnerships with

companies, municipalities, governmental

agencies, business associations, NGOs

and other organisations from the civil

society. These partnerships are part of a

cooperative process that accelerates the

circulation of knowledge among all the

stakeholders, allowing for a more effective

transformation of knowledge into new

technologies, products and services. The

open innovation ecosystem that UMinho has been jointly

developing with its partners aims to contribute to a more

competitive and sustainable economy as well as a better society.

Entrepreneurs, political leaders or NGOs are present at the

campi, on a daily basis, attending workshops, developing R&D&I

projects or consultancy contracts. UMinho technological interface

units and industrial laboratories, such as Done Lab, sponsored

by Bosch Car Multimedia, are based in the campi. PhD students

develop their projects in an industrial environment and firms,

such as Altice and DST, fund Chairs. These multiple forms of

collaboration allow for a privileged understanding of economic

and societal challenges, and for innovative solutions. This strong

interaction between researchers and society fosters a dynamic

innovation ecosystem and an entrepreneurship culture.

Estas parcerias fazem parte de um processo

conhecimento entre todos os parceiros,

contribuindo para uma transformação

mais efetiva de conhecimento em novas

tecnologias, produtos e serviços.

O ecossistema de inovação aberto que a UMinho tem vindo a construir com

os seus parceiros pretende fomentar uma economia mais competitiva e

sustentável e uma sociedade melhor.

Empresários, líderes políticos e ONGs estão presentes diariamente nos

campi da UMinho, participando em workshops, desenvolvendo projetos de

I&DT ou contratos de consultoria. As unidades de interface tecnológicas

da UMinho e laboratórios industriais como o DONE Lab, em parceria

com a Bosch Car Multimedia, estão sedeados nos campi. Estudantes de

doutoramento desenvolvem a sua investigação em ambiente empresarial

e Cátedras são patrocinadas por empresas como a Altice ou a DST. Estas

múltiplas formas de colaboração permitem uma perspetiva privilegiada

dos desafios económicos e sociais e surgimento de soluções inovadoras.

Esta forte interação entre os investigadores e a sociedade promove um

ecossistema de inovação dinâmico e uma cultura empreendedora.


A produção e a divulgação de atividades culturais também são

importantes vetores do conceito de instituição aberta em que a

UMinho está apostada. De facto, a dimensão cultural é intrínseca

ao nosso projeto educativo bem como um dos modos mais efetivos

de concretizar uma interação biunívoca com a sociedade.

A afirmação cultural é desenvolvida

de diferentes formas e por diferentes

entidades, consubstanciando uma

abordagem aberta e multifacetada em

termos de origem, tipologia e conteúdo.

É neste contexto que a UMinho assegura

uma atividade permanente, e de verdadeiro

serviço público, através de algumas das

suas unidades culturais, nomeadamente

a Biblioteca Pública de Braga, o Arquivo

Distrital de Braga, o Museu Nogueira da

Silva e Casa Museu de Monção, é cruzada

pela continuada emergência de uma

multiplicidade de propostas originárias

de: unidades orgânicas, outras unidades

culturais ou diferenciadas, como é o caso da Biblioteca Lúcio

Craveiro da Silva, em parceria com a Câmara Municipal de Braga;

da Orquestra da Universidade; ou de iniciativas de estudantes,

através dos seus grupos culturais da Rádio Universitária.

A coordenação da atividade das unidades culturais e a integração da

oferta da Universidade neste domínio é assegurada pelo Conselho

Cultural. O Festival de Outono, organizado anualmente em outubro,

tem vindo a afirmar-se como um momento de cruzamento de

experiências culturais, a partir de produções internas e externas.

Durante 2016, a UMinho concluiu o processo de construção

e instalação do novo edifício do Arquivo Distrital de Braga,

que deverá ser aberto ao público brevemente, melhorando

significativamente o serviço prestado por esta estrutura.

The production and dissemination of cultural activities

are also important vectors of the concept of open

institution in which UMinho is bet. In fact, the cultural

dimension is intrinsic to our educational project as well

as one of the most effective ways of achieving a one-

to-one interaction with society.

Cultural affirmation is developed

in different ways and by different

entities, consubstantiating an open

and multifaceted approach in terms

of origin, typology and content.

It is in this context that UMinho assures

a permanent activity, and a true public

service, through some of its cultural

units, namely the Braga Public Library,

the Braga District Archive, the Nogueira

da Silva Museum and the Monção House

Museum. Which was crossed by the

continuous emergence of a multiplicity

of proposals originating from: organic

units, other cultural or differentiated units, such as the

Biblioteca Lúcio Craveiro da Silva, in partnership with Braga

City Council; the University Orchestra; Or student initiatives,

through its cultural groups of the University Radio.

The Cultural Council coordinates the activity of cultural

units and integrates the University’s offer in this field.

The Autumn Festival, organized annually in October, has

been affirming itself as a moment of crossing of cultural

experiences, from internal and external productions.

During 2016, UMinho concluded the process of construction

and installation of the new building of the District Archive

of Braga, which should be open to the public briefly,

significantly improving the service provided by this structure.

UMinho apresenta Relatório de Sustentabilidade UMinho submits Sustainability Report

O Relatório de Sustentabilidade reportou ao ano de 2014 e foi elaborado

segundo as linhas orientadoras da Global Reporting Initiative, com o

maior nível de abrangência In Accordance – Comprehensive. A UMinho foi

a primeira universidade portuguesa a fazer este relato de acordo com as

diretrizes G4 e a sexta em termos mundiais. A sessão foi a 28 de janeiro

e contou com o Prémio Nobel da Paz 2007, Mohan Munasinghe.

The Sustainability Report dates from 2014 and has been prepared following the

guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative, with a greater level of coverage within

the field of In Accordance – Comprehensive. UMinho has been the first Portuguese

university to carry out this report, in accordance with the G4 Guidelines, and

the sixth worldwide. The session took place on the 28th of January and had the

participation of 2007

The project results from a straight

cooperation between UMinho and the

municipalities of Braga and Guimarães, whose

purpose is the technical and scientific along

These partners will be facilitating entities of

the access to priority targets of psychology

intervention, by drawing the attention to

its citizens needs and potentialities.

Passagem da UMinho a fundação Transition of UMinho into a foundation

O decreto-lei que transforma a UMinho numa fundação

pública com regime de direito privado foi publicado a 13

de janeiro. Este regime dotará a Academia Minhota de

maior autonomia na gestão, potenciado maior capacidade

para o cumprimento da missão da Universidade.

The decree-law establishing UMinho as a public

foundation of private law was published on January,

13th. From this date onwards, the Minho Academy will

gain not only management autonomy, but will also get

a greater capacity to fulfil its mission as a University.

A cerimónia decorreu a 17 de fevereiro, no Salão Medieval do Largo

do Paço, e contou com a presença do ministro da Ciência, Tecnologia

e Ensino Superior. Manuel Heitor veio à UMinho para discutir

ciência, tecnologia e educação superior, dando a conhecer as novas

orientações do Ministério nestas áreas. Nos dias 15 e 16 decorreram os

concertos comemorativos, em Braga e Guimarães, respetivamente.

The ceremony took place on the 17th February at the Salão Medieval

of Largo do Paço, counting with the presence of the Minister of

Science, Technology and Higher Education.

Start-up vence Prémio Nacional de Agricultura Start-up wins Agriculture National Prize

O Prémio Nacional de Agricultura, na

categoria Novos Negócios, foi atribuído à

Fórmula d’Avó, start-up ligada ao Centro

de Engenharia Biológica, numa cerimónia

que contou com o ministro da Agricultura,

Capoulas Santos. A empresa, nascida em

2012, desenvolve produtos inovadores para a

indústria da pastelaria.

The National Agricultural Prize, in the

category of New Businesses, has been

awarded to ‘Fórmula d’Avó’, a start-up linked

to the Centre of Biological Engineering. The

award ceremony had the participation of the

Minister of Agriculture Capoulas Santos. The

company Fórmula d’Avó was founded in 2012

and works in the development of traditional

pastry products.

UMinho é o primeiro engenheiro com formação académica e carreira

desenvolvidas em Portugal a ser eleito.

The appointment is considered a lifetime

or a professional career recognition and

honours those who have made outstanding

contributions to engineering research,

practice, or education in the fields of

engineering. The scientist of the UMinho is

the first member from Portugal to be elected

in the National Academy of Engineering.


António Costa no contrato de inovação entre UMinho e Bosch António Costa in the innovation agreement between UMinho and Bosch

O primeiro-ministro oficializou a 2ª fase

do projeto de investigação Bosch-UMinho.

Considerado estratégico para o País, o

projeto foca-se no desenvolvimento de

soluções de futuro para a mobilidade,

prevê um investimento de 55 milhões

de euros e o registo de 22 patentes até

2018. Em resultado do projeto anterior,

em 2015 submeteram-se 13 patentes.

The Prime Minister formalized the 2nd

phase of the research project Bosch-UMinho.

Considered strategic for the country, this

project is focused on the development of

future solutions for mobility, estimates

a 55 million Euro investment and the

registration of 22 new patents until

2018. Based on the previous project, 13

patents have been submitted in 2015.

Colóquio Internacional – Crianças, Cidade e CidadaniaInternational Conference – Children, the City and Citizenship

Profissionais das áreas de investigação da Sociologia da Infância,

Geografia, Arquitetura e Urbanismo, Ciências da Educação, entre

outras, promoveram o conhecimento e a reflexão sobre as percepções

e representações das crianças sobre a cidade, as políticas públicas

urbanas, a organização dos espaços, serviços e equipamentos urbanos

para as crianças, os direitos da criança no espaço urbano.

Professionals from the research areas of Sociology of Childhood,

Geography, Architecture and Urbanism, Educational Sciences,

among others, promoted the knowledge and the analysis about

the perceptions and representations of children in the city,

urban public policies, organisation of spaces, urban services

and equipment for children, children rights in urban space.

Bolsas de Estudo e Mérito em Engenharia Civil Scholarships and Merit-based Grants in Civil Engineering

Mais de quatro dezenas alunos do mestrado integrado em Engenharia

Civil receberam uma bolsa de valor pecuniário equivalente à propina

anual, além da oferta de estágios e duplo diploma. A iniciativa de

cooperação com empresas de engenharia, construção civil e obras

públicas nacionais estende-se por três anos e pretende atrair jovens

talentos e cativar o interesse para a área.

Almost fifty students of the integrated master’s degree in Civil

Engineering were granted a scholarship of monetary value equivalent

to the annual tuition fee, besides the proposition of internships and

double certificate. The initiative of cooperation with engineering

companies, civil and public works at national level will be extended for

a period of three years and aims to attract young talents and captivate

their interest for this area.

A atividade do Comité desenvolveu-se no sentido de apoiar a

UMinho na concretização do seu plano de investimentos, procurando

assegurar fontes de financiamento alternativas para alguns projetos

integrados no plano estratégico UMinho 2020, e garantindo,

simultaneamente, uma estreita ligação à sociedade, sustentando

uma estratégia institucional de envolvimento direto e comprometido

dos agentes e atores socioeconómicos na prossecução da missão

As principais atrações da 9ª edição da iniciativa foram os robôs

que competiram em provas de dança, corrida e manobras com

obstáculos, além de atividades desportivas. O evento, organizado

pelo Departamento de Eletrónica Industrial da UMinho, a spin-off

SAR e a marca Bot’n Roll, contou com mais de 570 participantes.

The main attractions of the 9th edition of this initiative were the

robots that competed in dancing, races and manoeuvres with obstacles

tests, apart from other sports activities. The event is organized

by the Department of Industrial Electronics of UMinho, a spin-

off of SAR and Bot’n Roll, which counted with 570 participants.

The Committee’s activity has developed in the sense of giving

2ª edição da 4U Minho – Feira Educativa e Formativa 2nd edition of 4U Minho – Educational and Training Fair

O certame contemplou palestras, workshops

e apresentações científicas, culturais e

desportivas e várias atrações, como o

simulador de condução Bosch, destinando-se

a alunos e professores dos ensinos básico

e secundário, encarregados de educação,

orientadores escolares, comunidade universitária e público

em geral. Decorreu no Pavilhão Multiusos, em Guimarães,

contou com 65 expositores e recebeu cerca de 8500

visitantes ao longo de três dias.

The event included conferences, workshops and

scientific, cultural and sports presentations as

well as various attractions, as the Bosch driving

simulator, intended for schoolchildren and teachers

of the elementary and secondary school grades,

parents and guardians, school counsellors, university

community and the public. The event took place

at the Pavilhão Multiusos in Guimarães, where

65 exhibitors had their booths and welcomed

VI Olimpíadas da Saúde VI Health Olympics

A competição atingiu o número recorde de 340 participantes do ensino

secundário de 14 cidades. Os alunos testaram os seus conhecimentos

e capacidades laboratoriais em experiências de dez minutos, passando

por 12 postos de trabalho. A avaliação do conhecimento científico foi

feita através de exames práticos observacionais, aplicando metodologias

usadas no âmbito do mestrado integrado em Medicina na UMinho.

The competition achieved a record number of 340 participants

of the secondary high schools of 14 cities. Students have tested

their knowledge and lab skills in ten-minute experiences, going

through 12 working posts. The assessment of scientific skills

was made through practical exams, by applying methods used

in the integrated master’s level in Medicine at UMinho.


Congresso Internacional de Optometria e Ciências da Visão International Congress of Optometry and Vision Science

O principal evento nas ciências da visão em Portugal, que

desde 2004 tem trazido a UMinho com conferencistas

de renome e um amplo programa científico, incluindo

comunicações livres, apresentações de casos clínicos em

posters e palestras, entre outros. O evento reuniu mais de

500 profissionais da área.

The main event of the Vision Sciences in Portugal

has been brought to UMinho since 2004 by reputable

lecturers and a vast scientific program, including free

communications, presentation of clinical cases in posters

and conferences, among others. The event has gathered

more than 500 professionals of this area.

A Escola de Direito acolheu o 3º Congresso Internacional “Direito na Lusofonia”,

espaço de reflexão sobre as ligações entre países que partilham com Portugal

jurista e protagonista político no período de transição para a democracia,

também veio à UMinho para uma Aula Aberta de Direito Constitucional.

The School of Law organized the 3rd International Conference entitled “Direito na

Lusofonia” (Law in the Lusophone context), which was designed to reflect upon

the connections among countries that share with Portugal a cultural, linguistic and

legal heritage. Diogo Freitas do Amaral, lawyer and politician during the transitional

period into democracy in Portugal, also came to UMinho to lecture an Open Class on

Constitutional Law.

Science Festival 2016

A 6ª edição da Festa da Ciência, iniciativa da

Escola de Ciências, promoveu um conjunto

de atividades de divulgação da Ciência, com

workshops, sessões hands-on, construções 3D,

concursos, palestras e exposições dirigidas

aos alunos dos ensinos pré-escolar, básico

e secundário. Durante três dias, mais de

800 alunos experimentaram, exploraram

e contactaram com o mundo do saber e do

conhecimento científico.

The 6th edition of Festa da Ciência (Science

Party) was organized by the School of

Sciences with an aim towards developing

a set of activities to promote Science,

with workshops, hands-on sessions, 3D

constructions, contests, competitions,

lectures and exhibitions addressed to

preschool, elementary and secondary

schoolchildren. During three days, more

than 800 students had the opportunity to

experiment, explore and contact the world of

knowledge and science.

A UMinho distinguiu 174 alunos com o

diploma de mérito, correspondente a

uma bolsa de valor pecuniário idêntico

ao da propina anual. Foram elegíveis os

estudantes que ingressaram em 2015/16

com nota igual ou superior a 16 valores,

na 1ª fase do CNA e em 1ª opção e os que

concluíram os 1º, 2º, 3º e 4º anos do curso.

The UMinho distinguished 174 students

with a Merit Certificate, equivalent to a

pecuniary scholarship and identical to

the annual tuition fee. Eligible were the

students who initiated in 2015/16 with

final average grades equal or higher

than 16, in the first phase of the national contest of access and as first option, and

those who concluded the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of their degrees.

The School of Medicine professor was appointed president of the Group, being the first time a

Portuguese citizen assumes leadership of this entity. This appointment strengthens the position

of the Portuguese General and Family Medical Practice in a worldwide network that brings together

specialists of more than 30 countries.

Antigos alunos da UMinho criam “eBay” da biotecnologia Alumni of UMinho create “eBay” of Biotechnology

O primeiro portal de vendas online para a biotecnologia e ciências da vida foi criado por dois

ex-alunos de Bioengenharia da UMinho. A start-up BiotechZone assume-se como a resposta

eficaz aos cientistas que precisam de adquirir produtos e serviços de laboratório com rapidez,

preenchendo a lacuna que existe atualmente entre a Biotecnologia e a Internet.

The first sales website for biotechnology and life sciences has been developed by two former

Biotechnology students of UMinho. The BiotechZone start-up is an effective response to scientists

who need to rapidly purchase laboratory products and services, so as to fill the present gap

between Biotechnology and Internet.

A gala de entrega dos Prémios Município do

Ano foi a 3 de junho, no Forte do Beliche, em Vila do Bispo, Sagres.

A iniciativa foi organizada pela UMinho, através da plataforma

UM-Cidades, em conjunto com o município de Vila do Bispo. Em 2016

registaram-se 93 candidaturas, após as 66 e 81 dos anos 2014 e 2015,

respetivamente. O concurso visa reconhecer e disseminar as boas

práticas em projetos de iniciativa dos municípios portugueses.

The ‘Prémios Município do Ano’ Galla Prize Awards took place on June

3rd at the Forte do Beliche, Vila do Bispo, Sagres. The organisation of

the event was of UMinho responsibility, through a UM-Cities Platform,

in cooperation with the municipality of Vila do Bispo. In 2016, 93

applications were submitted, following 66 and 81 of both preceding

years, respectively. The purpose of the context is to acknowledge and

disclose the good practices as far as Portuguese municipalities initiative

projects are concerned.

Hospital dos Bonequinhos em Barcelos

Toy Hospital in Barcelos

Meia centena de alunos de Medicina, Enfermagem e Educação Básica

estiveram envolvidos na criação de um hospital, à escala dos mais

pequenos. Crianças levaram o seu “boneco doente” ao médico. O

objetivo é aproximar as crianças do ambiente hospitalar e ajudar a

reduzir a ansiedade tão característica nestas idades.

About fifty students of the School of Medicine, as well as Nursing and

Basic Education Schools took part in the creation of a hospital, at the

small scale of the little ones. Children took their “sick toy” to the doctor.

The purpose is to bring children closer to the hospital environment and

help reducing anxiety, which so characterizes these early ages. 062016Jun

This joint initiative of UMinho and TecMinho

allowed the sharing of experiences, challenges and opportunities

among companies, as well as to publicly disclose their activities,

conference that marked the ten years of the Program and addressed its impact

Verão no Campus 2016 Summer at the Campus 2016

A 9ª edição do Verão no Campus aconteceu em Braga e Guimarães

e abriu as portas a cerca de 450 estudantes do ensino secundário.

Nesta edição vieram também alunos do Brasil, França e China. Ao todo

realizaram-se 25 atividades que promoveram a cultura e a ciência junto

dos jovens, ajudando-os nas suas escolhas para o ensino superior.

The 9th edition of ‘Verão no Campus’ (Summer at Campus) was held

in Braga and Guimarães and opened its doors to approximately 450

students of the high school level. This edition also welcomed students

from Brazil, France and China. All in all, 25 activities were carried out which promoted culture and

science amongst youngsters, helping them in their options before getting to high level education.

A TecMinho comemorou 15 edições do

apoiadas 225 ideias de negócio de 512

empreendedores, que geraram 102 empregos.

constitution of companies as well as in the

II Seminário Luso-Brasileiro de Educação de Infância II Portuguese-Brazilian Seminar on Child Education

O Seminário Luso-Brasileiro de Educação de Infância surgiu da necessidade

de discussão sobre a formação docente, as culturas da infância e a

participação das crianças nos diversos contextos e atividades que lhes

dizem respeito. Pretendeu-se igualmente fomentar o intercâmbio de

profissionais que atuam em diversos contextos de educação das crianças,

almejando promover o bem-estar, a cidadania e as culturas da infância.

This Seminar came from the necessity to discuss the models of teacher training,

the cultures of childhood and the participation of children in the various

contexts and activities for their age group. Another point was to implement

interchange among professionals playing roles in different contexts of children

education, trying to promote well-being, citizenship and childhood cultures.

International Congress on Structures and Architecture

A Escola de Arquitetura recebeu a 3ª edição

do ICSA2016, considerado o maior e mais

prestigiado do mundo neste âmbito.

O programa, que trouxe novidades na criação, conceção

e construção de estruturas, juntou cerca de 300 pessoas

de 40 países e cerca de 200 oradores, incluindo James

O’Callaghan, projetista das icónicas estruturas em vidro

das lojas da Apple.

The School of Architecture was awarded the 3rd

edition of ICSA2016, considered the highest and most

prestigious award of its kind all over the world. The

programme, that brought along a few novelties in the

development, conception and construction of structures,

had a participation of about 300 people from 40 different

countries and approximately 200 speakers, including

James O’Callaghan, designer of the iconic and increasingly

innovative Apple’s structural glass stairs and storefronts.

UMinho entre as melhores da europa em desporto universitário

UMinho among the best in Europe when it comes to University Sports

A equipa de futebol de 11 da UMinho tornou-se a primeira formação

portuguesa a vencer um Campeonato da Europa da modalidade.

No mesmo campeonato, em andebol, a equipa masculina também

venceu a medalha de bronze. Graças ao desempenho brilhante destas

e de outras participações, a UMinho foi a segunda melhor universidade

europeia em desporto universitário em 2016.

The Eleven Football Team of UMinho is the first Portuguese team to

win a European Championship in this discipline. In the same European

Championship, in handball, the men’s team won the bronze medal.

Thanks to the athletes’ brilliant performance

in these and other events, UMinho has been

the second best European university in

campus sports in 2016.

World University Karate Championship

A UMinho organizou o Campeonato Mundial Universitário

de Karaté, que decorreu, em Braga, de 10 a 13 de agosto

e recebeu mais de 500 participantes de 50 países. Esta 10ª

edição do evento foi a primeira realizada em Portugal e o

22º Mundial Universitário neste país, refletindo a estratégia

de internacionalização do desporto universitário nacional.

Championship between 10th and 13th of August in Braga,

welcoming more than 500 athletes from over 50 countries.

This 10th edition of the event has been the first carried out

in Portugal and the 22nd World University Championship in

this country, showing the internationalization strategy of

the local university sports spirit.

Há Ciência na Cidade There is Science in Town

A Escola de Ciências, membro organizador da Noite Europeia dos

Investigadores, promoveu o ciclo “Há Ciência na Cidade” cujas

atividades, abertas ao público em geral, decorreram de julho a

a oportunidade de conversar sobre nanotecnologia, fazer uma visita

The School of Sciences, one of the organizers of the ‘Noite Europeia

dos Investigadores’ (European Researchers Night) has promoted

the cycle “There is Science in Town”, whose activities, open to the

public, took place between July and September in several locations in

the city of Braga. The participants had the opportunity to talk about

UMinho destaca-se nos rankings internacionais UMinho Stands out in international rankings

A UMinho continua a destacar-se nos principais rankings

internacionais, nomeadamente no Scimago Institutions Rankings

e no Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). No primeiro

caso, subiu quase 200 posições desde 2010 e no CWUR subiu, em dois

anos, 76 lugares. Entrou, também, pela 1ª vez, para o ARWU, mais

conhecido como “Ranking de Xangai”, ficando entre as 500 melhores

instituições de ensino superior do mundo. Este ranking, um dos mais

conceituados a nível mundial, avalia anualmente 1200 universidades.

UMinho continues to stand out in the main international rankings,

A 66ª assembleia geral da CIRP, cujo comité organizativo foi presidido

por Goran Putnik, do departamento de Produção e Sistemas, trouxe,

à UMinho e ao CATIM (Porto), anfitriões eleitos, cerca de 700

participantes de todo o mundo. A CIRP é a instituição internacional

globalmente mais prestigiada na área da Engenharia de Produção e os

membros da academia são os investigadores mais conceituados na área.

The 66th general assembly of CIRP, whose organisational committee

has been presided by Goran Putnik, of the Department of Production

and Systems, gathered at UMinho and CATIM (in Oporto), acting

as elected hosts, approximately 700 participants coming from the

five continents. CIRP is the globally most prestigious international

institution in whatever relates to Production Engineering and the

members of the academy are the most respected scientists in this field.

The academic degree in Criminology

and Criminal Justice brings together the

competences of both Law and Psychology

Schools as well as of the Institute of Social

Sciences, coordinating knowledge and

methods within these disciplines to know

and explain the definition of crime, offender,

victim, criminal justice, control devices and

phenomena of social reaction to crime, aimed

at raising student’s awareness towards

developing a critical and reflexive attitude.


Encontro Caixa Alumni Alumni Meeting

O Encontro Caixa Alumni realizou-se a 17 de setembro,

no Paço dos Duques de Bragança, em Guimarães.

O mote foi “História com Futuro”, transmitindo a ideia

de legado, ao mesmo tempo que invocou a vanguarda

e a evolução. Esta terceira edição juntou cerca de 700

antigos estudantes, recuperando memórias e reforçando

as suas ligações à UMinho.

The ‘Encontro Caixa Alumni’ was held on the 17th

September, at Paços dos Duques de Bragança, in

Guimarães. The motto was “History with Future”,

transmitting the legacy idea and invoking advance

technology and evolution. This third edition gathered

about 700 Alumni, retrieving memories and strengthening

“Aldeia Feliz” apoia idosos da Peneda-Gerês “Aldeia Feliz” supports the elderly of Peneda-Gerês

O Núcleo de Estudantes de Medicina promoveu a 3ª

edição da “Aldeia Feliz”, prestando apoio médico a cerca

de 200 idosos das aldeias de Cabreiros, Soajo, Senharei,

Cabreiro, Sistelo e Cabana Maior, situadas na zona do

Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês. Ao longo de 4 dias, as

visitas ao domicílio incluíram rastreios cardiovasculares,

identificação de problemas de saúde e mobilidade,

avaliação das condições de habitabilidade e o grau de

dependência dos idosos.

The ‘Núcleo de Estudantes de Medicina’ promoted the

3rd edition of “Aldeia Feliz”, giving medical support to

almost 200 elderly people of the villages of

Cabreiros, Soajo, Senharei, Cabreiro, Sistelo,

and Cabana Maior, all of them in the Peneda-

Gerês National Park. During four days,

these home visits included cardiovascular

screenings, identification of health problems

and mobility, assessment of the living

conditions as well as the dependence level of

the elderly in question.

Guilherme A. B. Pereira, professor associado do departamento de

Produção e Sistemas da Escola de Engenharia e investigador no Centro

Algoritmi, tomou posse a 20 de setembro como pró-reitor para a

Guilherme A. B. Pereira is an Associate Professor with the

Department of Production and Systems of the School of

Engineering and researcher at the Algoritmi Centre. He

took office on the 20th of September as Pro-Rector being

his main purpose to Institutional Assessment.

Projeto U-Bike.UMinho U-Bike.UMinho Project

O projeto U-Bike Portugal enquadra-se nos

apoios do Portugal 2020 e visa promover

a adoção de hábitos de mobilidade mais

sustentáveis, através da disponibilização

de bicicletas elétricas e convencionais a

instituições públicas de ensino superior.

À UMinho foram atribuídas 340 unidades,

a maioria das quais elétricas. O projeto prevê

também iniciativas de sensibilização para

os benefícios na utilização da bicicleta.

The U-Bike Portugal Project falls within the scope of the Portugal

2020 programme. The purpose is to promote more sustainable

mobility habits with the help of electric and conventional bikes to

public university and higher level institutions. UMinho received 340

units, most of them electric. The project also anticipates awareness-

raising initiatives for the benefits of adopting the use of bikes.


III Conferência Internacional em Geotecnia nos Transportes III International Conference on Transportation Geotechnics

O evento visou a reflexão sobre os crescentes requisitos das infraestruturas nas

sociedades. Os temas contemplados nesta 3ª edição incluíram a relevância da atuação

da geotecnia nas infraestruturas de transporte terreste com vista à criação de estruturas

seguras, económica e ambientalmente viáveis. A conferência teve lugar em Guimarães

e recebeu mais de 300 comunicações provenientes de cerca de 50 países.

The event aimed at reflecting on the growing requirements of infrastructure

in societies. The topics covered in this 3rd edition included the relevance of the

geotechnical performance in the terrestrial transport infrastructures in order to create

safe, economical and environmentally viable structures. The conference took place in

Guimarães and received more than 300 communications from around 50 countries.

Biotechnology European Week

O encerramento das comemorações

nacionais da efeméride decorreu no Instituto

para a Bio Sustentabilidade da UMinho,

no campus de Gualtar. A organização

foi da P-Bio – Associação Portuguesa de

Bioindústrias e do Centro de Engenharia Biológica e contou com

o Alto Patrocínio da Presidência da República Portuguesa. A iniciativa

discutiu as potencialidades da Biotecnologia industrial na substituição

de processos convencionais da indústria química por processos

biotecnológicos e na produção de diversos produtos de

valor acrescentado.

The Closing of the National Ceremonies took place at the UMinho’s

Institute for Bio-Sustainability, at Gualtar campus. The event was

organized by P-Bio – Associação Portuguesa de Bioindústrias and

Centro de Engenharia Biológica and counted upon the high patronage

of the Portuguese Republic Presidency. The initiative discussed the

potentialities of industrial Biotechnology in the replacement of

conventional processes of the chemistry industry by biotechnological

processes and in the production of several added-value products.

Prémio Internacional Optometrista do Ano Prize “International Optometrist of the Year”

José González-Méijome, professor da Escola de Ciências, venceu

o Prémio Internacional Optometrista do Ano 2016, um dos maiores

reconhecimentos na área a nível mundial, atribuído pela Universidade

Politécnica da Catalunha. O galardão destaca, entre outros aspetos,

o currículo do cientista, o número de publicações e de patentes

registadas e o impacto do seu trabalho na sociedade.

José González-Méijome, professor at the School of Sciences, was

awarded the International Prize Optometrist of 2016, one of the

worldwide greatest recognitions in this field, granted by the Universitat

Politècnica de Catalunya. The prize distinguishes, among other aspects,

the scientist curriculum, the number of publications and patents

registered, as well as the impact of his/her work on society.

Neide Vieira tem vindo a desenvolver um trabalho que

ajuda a perceber como defeitos na homeostase proteica

associados ao envelhecimento, e a doenças relacionadas

com o stress crónico. A bolsa é atribuída pelo conselho

científico da Brain & Behavior Research Foundation,

Nova Iorque.

Neide Vieira has been developing a work that helps

to understand how defects in protein

homeostasis can negatively influence

cognition and synaptic plasticity, situations

underlying aging processes, and chronic

stress related diseases. The grant is awarded

by the scientific board of the Brain & Behavior

Research Foundation, New York.

During the Euro-Ibero-American Youth Forum - Braga 2016, Alfredo Pérez Bravo, Mexican

Ambassador in Portugal visited the School of Economics and Management and lectured on

“Mexico - Portugal’s New Partner”. The Study Centre for the Degree in International Relations

also promoted the round table “Política no Feminino” (Politics in Feminine Gender), with the

intervention of Catarina Martins, member of parliament and coordinator of the political party

Bloco de Esquerda.


UMinho subscreve Magna Charta Universitatum

UMinho underwrites Magna Charta Universitatum

A declaração foi assinada no encontro anual do Observatório Magna

Charta Universitatum, realizado na Universidade de São Paulo,

no Brasil. Mais de 800 universidades de 85 países já aderiram ao

documento, assumindo os valores da autonomia universitária,

a liberdade de pesquisa e de ensino, a indissociabilidade entre o ensino

e a investigação, bem como os valores humanistas e a abertura

a diferentes culturas.

The declaration was signed during the annual meeting of the

Observatório Magna Charta Universitatum, in São Paulo, Brazil. Over

800 universities of 85 countries have already signed the document,

committing to the values of university autonomy, freedom of

research and teaching, indissociability

between teaching and research, as well as

humanitarian values and the

openness to other cultures.

The Forum took place at the Salão Medieval da UMinho, in Braga –

during the Euro-Ibero-American Youth Forum. Marcelo Rebelo de

Sousa was present and there was the public presentation of the

document “Braga 2016 – Um novo futuro para a juventude ibero-

americana” (Braga 2016 – A New Future for the Ibero-American Youth).


III Fórum de Ética da UMinho III Ethics Forum of UMinho

Promoveu a análise, reflexão e debate com toda a comunidade académica da UMinho

sobre o papel da ética, com especial enfoque na promoção de condutas éticas nos projetos

e atividades de interação da universidade com a sociedade e esclareceu sobre o papel das

subcomissões de ética para as Ciências da Vida e da Saúde e para as Ciências Sociais e Humanas

na obtenção de pareceres na formulação de projetos de candidatura a financiamento.

The forum promoted the analysis, reflection and discussion among the whole academic

community of UMinho regarding the role of Ethics, with special emphasis on ethical

behaviour in projects and activities of interaction of the university and the society,

clarifying on the role of the subcommittees for Life and Health Sciences and for Social

and Human Sciences, in order to gather opinions about fundraising opportunities.

O programa apostou na promoção de

diferentes expressões artísticas, incutindo

novos hábitos culturais e proporcionando

maior conhecimento de diferentes culturas,

em especial aos novos estudantes da UMinho.

A iniciativa incluiu concertos, clubbing,

workshops, conversas e visitas guiadas e

contou com o apoio da Braga 2016 – Capital

Iberoamericana da Juventude e do Município

de Guimarães.

The programme gave special attention to

different artistic expressions, instilling

new cultural habits and offering a broader

knowledge of different cultures, in particular

the new students of UMinho. Among the

several initiatives, there were concerts,

clubbing, workshops, talks and guided

visits, and counted with the support of Braga

2016 – Euro-Ibero-American Youth Forum

During the celebrations of the 500 years

of Thomas More’s Utopia, the 18th edition

of the ‘Colóquio de Outono’, organized

held on 17-18th November, whose key

topic was “Outros Lugares: Utopias,

distopias, heterotopias” (Other Places:

A distinção foi atribuída a Aaron Williamon, do Centro para a Ciência

da Performance do Royal College of Music, no Reino Unido. A Aula

Aberta, durante a qual também se homenageou o patrono, abordou

o alcance e a extensão dos efeitos da música e a ligação entre esta e

os nossos sistemas biológicos que regulam a saúde mental, a função

imunológica e o bem-estar.

The distinction was awarded to Aaron Williamson, of the Centre for

Performance Science of the Royal College of Music, United Kingdom.

The Open Classroom, during which the patron was also distinguished,

referred the scope and the extent of music effects as well as the

connection between music and our biological systems, which regulate

our mental health, our immune function, and our well-being.

Harald zur Hausenm wished to be present at

the ICVS International Seminars with a lecture

on the new infectious agents and their role

in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

Professor Harald zur Hausen was awarded

the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in

2008, for his discovery of human papilloma

viruses (HPV) causing cervical cancer.

Juntou mais de duas centenas de investigadores e profissionais

Over two hundred researchers and professionals and the universities

of Minho, Porto, and Lisbon, as well as the Ordem dos Engenheiros

e dos Arquitetos met together within a common ground to discussion

and adapt the national legislation when it comes to virtual construction.

The development of models, navigable via

virtual reality, can lead to the reduction of

costs, an adequate planning and a greater

sustainability to build any infrastructure.

100.000 assessments by experts and readers.

The list highlights innovation in biotechnology

and its impacts on chemistry, nutrition,

Adesão da UMinho ao University and Research Leadership Forum Affiliation of UMinho to the University and Research Leadership Forum

Os líderes e organizações envolvidos nesta rede visam a implementação

de estratégias de inovação, produtividade e prosperidade para as

suas nações, regiões ou cidades. A reunião deste ano, teve lugar em

Lindres, em paralelo com a Cimeira Mundial de Inovação, promovida

anualmente pelo Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils,

e focou-se na competitividade e sustentabilidade das cidades.

Both the leaders and the organisations involved in this network

wish to develop innovation, productivity and prosperity strategies

for their nations, regions or cities. This years’ meeting was held in

London, simultaneously to the World Summit on Innovation, an

annual event organized by the Global Federation of Competitiveness

O laboratório integra equipamento

aditiva de protótipos e ferramentas.

Foi inaugurado a 28 de novembro, no

campus de Azurém, em Guimarães,

resultando da parceria entre a

UMinho e a Bosch Car Multimedia.

The laboratory is fitted with state-of-the-

art equipment for the additive manufacture

of prototypes and tools. This Lab was

inaugurated on the 28th November, in

the campus of Azurém, Guimarães, as

a result from a partnership between

UMinho and Bosch Car Multimedia.


Centro de Excelência em Medicina Regenerativa e Precisão com financiamento da Europeu Excellence Centre in Regenerative Medicine and Precision with European Funding

O “The Discoveries” resulta da parceria

entre cinco universidades nacionais – Minho,

Porto, Aveiro, Lisboa e Nova de Lisboa

e a University College London, do Reino

Unido. A investigação multidisciplinar

visa a prevenção e tratamento de doenças

músculo-esqueléticas, neuro-degenerativas e

cardiovasculares. O projeto, liderado por Rui L.

Reis, receberá um investimento de 15 milhões

de euros, no âmbito do programa Teaming.

‘The Discoveries’ results from a partnership

between five local universities – Minho,

Porto, Aveiro, Lisboa, and Nova de Lisboa,

and University College London, UK. The

multidisciplinary research aims the

prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal

diseases, neurodegenerative disorders

and cardiovascular diseases. This project,

under the leadership of Rui L. Reis, will

be granted a 15 million Euro investment

within the Teaming programme.

The sixth edition of the initiative Liftoff – Gabinete do Empreendedor

e do GIP – Gabinete de Inserção Profissional da AAUM was held in

Gualtar, Braga, on 9–10th November. It promoted the direct contact

between the academic community and labour market, suggesting

opportunities, developing skills and networking with the participants.

The European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation

visited UMinho from 19th to 20th December, visiting a few research

centres and keeping several meetings both with scientists and

students. Part of this visit was the debate on “A União Europeia,

desafios presentes e o papel das próximas gerações” (European

Union, Present Challenges and the Role of the Next Generations).

Cientistas da UMinho recebem bolsas do Conselho Europeu de Investigação Scientists of UMinho are granted scholarships from the European Research Council (ERC).

ISCN is an organisation composed by a few of the best worldwide universities,

promovendo uma sessão de

palestras e debate alusivos

aos direitos das pessoas com

deficiência. Foram abordados

temas como a discriminação,

o desrespeito e a violência sobre pessoas

com deficiência.

UMinho, through the Gabinete para a

Inclusão (Office for Inclusion), celebrated the

occasion on the 13th December with a series

of lectures and debates about the rights of

disabled people. Subjects as discrimination,

disrespect and violence against the disabled

were only a few of the discussed topics.
