UALBANY VS. JMU HISTORY

SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES2014 Record: 4-0, 1-0 CAA2014 CAA Preseason Poll: 10th/12Head Coach: Greg Gattuso (1st season at UAlbany/13th overall as head coach) (4-0 / 101-32)

THE COACH: Greg Gattuso, a former head coach at Duquesne Univer-sity and assistant head coach at both Pittsburgh and Maryland, was named the University at Albany’s head football coach in December of 2013. Gattuso became the second football coach in the program’s 41-varsity season history, taking the reins from program architect Bob Ford. Throughout both his playing and coaching career, Gattuso boasts a long history of exceptional success. As a defensive lineman at Penn State, Gattuso helped lead the Nittany Lions to a national title in 1982. In his first collegiate head-coaching role, Gattuso piloted Duquesne to a 97-32 record during his 12-season tenure, and while making three bowl appearances at Pittsburgh, he turned the defen-sive line into one of the best in the nation as an assistant head coach and hauled in a top-10 recruiting class. Gattuso comes to UAlbany after spending three seasons as a member Randy Edsall’s Universi-ty of Maryland coaching staff. There, he led the defensive line that ranked among the top in the ACC and was promoted to the position of assistant head coach in February 2012.

OVERVIEW: UAlbany enters the weekend with a 4-0 record, and will look to match the best start in Division I history with a win over JMU. Jumping out to a 35-0 lead in the first half, the Great Danes come off a 42-7 triumph over Columbia of the Ivy League. In addition, the Great Danes overcame Holy Cross (14-13) in week one, Central Connecticut State (19-0) in week two, and after a bye week, recorded the pro-gram’s first CAA win – a 37-20 victory over Rhode Island -- in week four. UAlbany is one of nine FCS teams still with an undefeated record and boasts one of the top defenses in the country -- ranking first in the nation for turnover margin (3.00), first in the CAA and second in FCS for rushing defense (72.0), as well as first in the conference and third in FCS for scoring defense (10.0).

THE DEFENSE: Redshirt sophomore linebacker Michael Nicastro leads the team with 32 tackles (15 solo), including 2.5 (9-yards) for a loss, and a fumble recovery, followed by redshirt senior linebacker Christian Dorsey’s 31 tackles (12 solo). In the secondary, junior Kyle Sakowski has totaled 28 tackles with an interception, fumble recovery and six pass breakups, while redshirt sophomore Rayshan Clark leads the nation with 2.8 passes defended per game (10 breakups) in addi-tion to 27 tackles (15 solo), an interception, and a fumble recovery.

THE OFFENSE: Offensively, redshirt senior Will Fiacchi has complet-ed 52-of-104 passes for 650 yards and eight touchdowns. Redshirt senior wide receiver Cole King has three TD grabs and 180 receiving yards on 12 catches, while true freshman receiver Josh Gontarek leads the team with 16 receptions (183 yards), including two touchdown snags. Redshirt senior tight end Brian Parker has also been a viable option for the Danes, recording 10 receptions, 131 receiving yards, and two touchdown grabs. On the ground, running back Omar Osbourne leads the CAA with 135.2 rushing yards per game, netting 541 yards in four games on 97 carries, while scoring two touchdowns.

SCOUTING THE DUKES2014 Record: 2-3, 0-2 CAA2014 CAA Preseason Poll: 8th/12Head Coach: Everett Withers (1st season at JMU/ 2nd overall as head coach) (2-3 / 9-9)

THE COACH: Everett Withers is in his first season as the head football coach at James Madison University. A 26-year coaching veteran, Withers came to JMU from Ohio State University, where he served as assistant head coach, co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach for two years. During his time with the Buckeyes, he has been a part of a school-record 24-game win streak and a 24-1 mark heading into the upcoming Discover Orange Bowl against No. 12 Clemson. During his career, Withers has split time between the collegiate and professional coaching ranks, having worked in the NCAA Division I level for 19 years and in the National Football League for seven seasons. Prior to accepting his position with Ohio State in December 2012, Withers spent four years at the University of North Carolina. He was promoted to interim head coach at the school in July 2011 and he led the Tar Heels to a 7-6 overall record and to a berth in the Independence Bowl against Missouri.

HARRISONBURG, Va. – In front of a sell-out crowd of 25,201 at Bridgeforth Stadium in Harrisonburg, Va., the Uni-versity at Albany football team fell 40-13 to the hosting James Madison University Dukes Saturday afternoon in CAA play. JMU improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Great Danes dropped to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the CAA. On target all afternoon, junior quarterback Will Fiacchi completed 26-of-43 passes for a total of 214 passing yards and one touchdown. Tight end Brian Parker had a career day as Fiacchi’s top receiver, recording eight receptions for 71-yards. Senior wide receiver Kevin Chillis was also a go-to option with six receptions, 22-receiving-yards and a touchdown catch.

On the ground, Omar Osbourne carried the ball 17 times, netting 59 rushing yards. Defensively, the Great Danes were led by Christian Dorsey’s eight tackles, while Alex Helmer and Michael Nicastro logged seven apiece. As a team, UAlbany finished with 324 yards of total offense, while JMU recorded 460. Neither squad surrendered a fumble or interception. After forcing the Great Danes to punt in their first possession, James Madison quickly put points on the board with a four-play, 78-yard drive. Tailback Khalid Abdullah took the handoff and rushed 38-yards into the end zone, breaking six tackles along the way to give JMU a 6-0 head start. With 11:18 on the clock in the first quarter, the Dukes went for two, but the run was stifled by the UAlbany defense. The Great Danes immediately responded with a 10-play, 68-yard scoring drive. With third-and-seven Fiacchi found Cole King 40-yards down field along the visitor’s sideline, giving UAlbany a first down on the JMU-21. Five snaps later, kicker Tom O’Riordan connected a 24-yard field goal, making the score 6-3 with 6:36 remaining in the opening quarter. The hosting Dukes answered back with a touchdown on the next drive, using four plays to cover 78-yards in 1:10. JMU quarterback Michael Birdsong capped the drive with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Brown. However, the Dukes again missed the point-after, as the kick sailed wide right, making the score 12-3 with 5:26 left in the first quarter. James Madison added another touchdown at the start of the second quarter, closing a 10-play, 67-yard drive with Dae-Quan Scott’s three-yard rush across the goal line. With their first successful extra point, the Dukes held a 19-3 lead with 11:54 remaining in the second quarter. Forcing UAlbany to punt, JMU took over on its own 36-yard line and drove down the gridiron with 10 plays. Birdsong zipped a pass to Brown in the back of the end zone with 6:06 left in the first half, giving the Duke s 26-3 advantage after the kick. The Great Danes looked as though they were in line for their own successful scoring drive after a roughing the kicker penalty gave UAlbany a fresh opportunity at the UAlbany-45. The Danes drove to the 10, using an 11-yard fleaflicker pass to Osbourne, a 10-yard pass to Parker, and a 10-yard scramble by Fiacchi. However, a holding penalty and a third-down sack for a loss of 10 forced a punt with just under two minutes remaining in the half. While the Dukes were given another chance to score, the Great Dane defense displayed their best performance of the game, recording back-to-back sacks by Joe Fasano, Christian Dorsey, and Michael Nicastro. With the ball at the JMU-5, the Dukes punted out of the back of the end zone, giving UAlbany the ball with 30 seconds remaining. Fiacchi completed passes to Parker and Malachi Lawrence, but time ran out, sending the teams into the locker rooms with a 26-3 score on the board. Out of the break, the UAlbany defense came up with a stop and set the tone for the rest of the third quarter. James Madi-son attempted a 44-yard field goal, but it wobbled wide left with 11:26 on the clock. Using trickery, the Great Danes avoided a quick three-and-out in their first possession of the second half. With fourth-and-two, the Great Danes faked a punt and Chillis rushed seven yards for a first down. A pass interference call on third down gave UAlbany another first down on the JMU-30 before driving all the way to the two-yard line with five rushes by Osbourne. Facing fourth-and-goal, the Danes went for it, but unfortunately Fiacchi’s pass to Cole King was dropped in the back of the end zone with under 6:00 minutes remaining in the third. While the Danes didn’t score on the play, the defense made quick work of JMU, forcing a three-and-out punt. UAlbany took over on the JMU-46 with 4:47 remaining in the third. Completing two 10+ yard passes to Parker and a 16-yard pass to Jameel Gay, Fiacchi led the Great Danes to the seven-yard line. Two short rushes by Ryan Spelman led to Fiacchi’s five-yard touch-down pass to Chillis. Chillis caught the ball at the one and stretched across the corner of the goal line. Going for two, Fiacchi found Chillis in the same location, making the score 26-11 with 2:05 left in the third. Momentum continued to stay on the side of the visitors. With JMU’s drive starting on the 10, UAlbany’s defense stepped up again, pushing the Dukes backward to the six-yard line on Kologrivov and Nicastro’s shared tackle. On the next play, Kolog-rivov pressured Birdsong in the end zone, and an intentional grounding penalty awarded UAlbany two points for the safety. UAlbany trailed 26-13 heading into the fourth quarter. However, James Madison scored two unanswered touchdowns in the final stanza to make the final 40-13 score. With 11:48 on the clock, Scott rushed one yard, capping a 10-play 86-yard drive. Lastly, with 2:10 remaining, Brown caught a two-yard pass from Birdsong after driving 55 yards down the field for the final points of the game.

HEAD COACH GREG GATTUSO

Greg Gattuso, a former head coach at Duquesne University and assistant head coach at both Pittsburgh and Maryland, was named the University at Albany’s head football coach in December of 2013. The 51-year-old Gattuso be-came the second football coach in the program’s 41-varsity season history, taking the reins from program architect Bob Ford.

Throughout both his playing and coaching career, Gattuso boasts a long history of excep-tional success. As a defensive lineman at Penn State, Gattuso helped lead the Nittany Lions to a national title in 1982. In his first collegiate head-coaching role, Gattuso piloted Duquesne to a 97-32 record during his 12-season tenure, and while making three bowl appearances at Pittsburgh, he turned the defensive line into one

of the best in the nation as an assistant head coach and hauled in a top-10 recruiting class.Gattuso comes to UAlbany after spending three seasons as a member Randy Edsall’s

University of Maryland coaching staff. There, he led the defensive line that ranked among the top in the ACC and was promoted to the position of assistant head coach in February 2012.

During his tenure with the Terrapins, Gattuso developed current New England Patriot Joe Vellano into an NFL-ready defensive lineman, as Vellano earned All-America and All-ACC honors. In addition, Gattuso tutored All-ACC defensive lineman A.J. Francis, who signed with the Miami Dolphins at the conclusion of his collegiate career.

Prior to Maryland, Gattuso spent six seasons at Pittsburgh (2005-10) where he turned the Panthers’ defensive line into one of the team’s major strengths. The line was one of the top sack producers in the nation, as Brandon Lindsey (10.0) and Jabaal Sheard (9.0) both ranked in the top 20 nationally in sacks during the 2010 regular season and Pittsburgh led the nation in that category in 2009 (3.6 per game). Gattuso developed three Big East Defensive Player of the Year winners, as Sheard received the honor in 2010, and defensive linemen Greg Romeus and Mick Williams shared the award in 2009.

Gattuso initially joined the Pitt staff as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in 2005. In his first season, he helped the Panthers sign a recruiting class rated 10th in the nation

by Scout.com, 16th by ESPN.com and 21st by Rivals.com. He began coaching the defensive line in 2006 and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2008. Scout.com named Gattuso the Big East Recruiter of the Year in 2007. During his tenure, The Panthers logged a 26-12 overall record, a 15-6 mark in the Big East, and ap-peared in three bowl games.

Before Pitt, Gattuso had a successful 12-year stint (1993-2004) as head coach at Duquesne University where he built the Dukes into one of the most elite I-AA football programs in the nation. The winningest coach in school history, the Dukes went 97-32 (.752) under his direction, won eight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) titles, made five bowl appearances, and captured the 2003 Mid-Major Division I-AA national championship.

The Western Pennsylvania native was twice named the national Mid-Major I-AA Coach of the Year and was a seven-time MAAC Coach of the Year. The Dukes dominated the conference during his tenure, going 66-7 (.904) in league play, in-cluding a 33-game winning streak.

Gattuso was an assistant coach at Duquesne in 1992 before taking over the head coaching post the following year.

From 1989-1991, he served as head coach at his high school alma mater, Seton-LaSalle. Taking over a team that went 6-34 during the four seasons prior to his arrival, Gattuso led the Rebels to a 28-10-1 mark (.731), including three WPIAL playoff berths, a WPIAL championship and Parkway Conference title.

During his playing career, Gattuso was named the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Class AA Player of the Year his senior season at Seton-LaSalle and was a two-time All-East defensive lineman at Penn State. He was a member of the Lions’ 1982 na-tional title team and graduated in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in administration and criminal justice.

Gattuso and his wife Colleen have two daughters, Jacqueline (26) and Kaitlin (21).

Entering his first season in 2014, Gattuso takes over a program that has only known one other head coach – Bob Ford. Ford started a club team in 1970 and led the Great Danes through all three NCAA Divisions. Ford announced in August that the 2013 season would be his last after 44 seasons at the helm.

Still transitioning to the 63-scholarship level, Gattuso inherits a UAlbany squad that went 1-11 overall in 2013 in their first season in the CAA.
