HONORING THE THOMPSONS Lyle and Miles Thompson, two of the most decorated men’s lacrosse players in University at Albany history, are honored in the “People of New York” exhibit that opened Thursday, Feb. 14, in the State Capitol building. The exhibit, whose opening was announced by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, “features the people of New York - past and present - and their firsthand accounts of perseverance and migration.” “The First Peoples” portion of the exhibit includes life-size cutouts of the Thompson brothers, and accompanying text details their achievements for UAlbany. In the images, they’re wearing uniforms of the Georgia Swarm, the National Lacrosse League franchise for which they now play. Born in Onondaga Nation, near Syracuse, N.Y., Lyle and Miles became two of the most celebrated lacrosse players in the world while at UAlbany. Lyle was the first male recipient of the Tewaara-ton Award in consecutive seasons, and he set new NCAA Division

I records for career points (400) and assists (225). As a senior at UAlbany, Miles was the co-recipient of the Tewaaraton Award with his brother and set a NCAA Division I record for most single season goals (82). They both were drafted by the Swarm, Miles as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NLL Draft and Lyle as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NLL Draft. In 2017, the tandem was instrumental in the Swarm winning its first world championship.

2018 IN REVIEW The University at Albany men’s lacrosse team’s historic season culminated with the program’s first appearance in the Final Four. It was, without question, one of the most storied campaigns in Great Danes history. UAlbany began with a 15-3 win at Syracuse, a victory that would help vault the Great Danes to the No. 1 ranking in both national polls. In fact, men’s lacrosse became the first SUNY team to be ranked No. 1 in a Division I sport. That set up a nationally televised No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup with Maryland on March 10 – a game UAlbany stormed back to win, 11-10, on the road. The Great Danes spent five weeks as the country’s No. 1 team on their way to a second straight America East championship. In the NCAA Tourna-ment, UAlbany defeated Richmond in front of 4,800 fans at Casey Stadium and then beat Denver on Long Island to reach the national semifinals for the first time. The Great Danes picked up many indi-vidual accolades along the way, sweeping the major America East Awards and having 11 all-conference players, including eight on the First Team. UAlbany finished 16-3 overall, a record that included a 10-0 mark at Casey Stadium.

Scott Marr is in his 19th season as UAlbany's head coach. The only coach hired in the Division I era at the University at Albany, Marr, a six-time America East Coach of the Year, has coached the Great Danes to nine America East Tournament titles, 10 appear-ances in the NCAA Tournament and six NCAA Tournament victories. He has a 179-114 career record at UAlbany and has coached Tewaaraton winners in 2014 and 2015, 34 All-Americans, six Tewaaraton finalists, two Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award winners for Most Outstanding DI Player, three Lt. Col. J.L. Turnbull Award winners for the best Attackman in the nation, 10 America East Players of the Year and 113 all-conference players.

The program enjoyed its best season in 2018, earning a No. 1 national ranking in both polls during the regular season for the first time and reaching the national semifinals. After winning their ninth America East championship, UAlbany defeated Richmond and Denver in the NCAA Tournament to reach Championship Weekend. During the regular season, the Great Danes posted wins over ranked opponents Syracuse, Maryland, Vermont and Harvard. UAlbany dominated the America East’s postseason awards, sweeping all four major awards and having 11 players named to All-Conference teams. Connor Fields was honored as the America East Offensive Player of the Year, TD Ierlan was selected as the AE Defensive Player of the Year, Tehoka Nanticoke was honored as the AE Rookie of the Year and Marr was chosen as the AE Coach of the Year.

As an assistant on Dick Edell’s Maryland staff for six years, Marr served as both assistant coach and offensive coordinator. Maryland made five NCAA Tournament appearances during that period and was the Division I national runner-up in 1995, 1997 and 1998. The Terrapins shattered the school’s single-season scoring record with 236 goals when the program captured the ‘98 Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season and tournament titles. Maryland’s attack averaged 12.5 goals under Marr’s direction from 1995-2000. All-Americans Matt Hahn and Andrew Whipple became two of the most storied scorers in school history.

Marr served as one of three assistants for the 2006 U.S. Men’s Lacrosse Team that won the silver medal. Syracuse’s John Desko was the U.S. team’s head coach. The 2006 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship was held in London, Ontario from July 13-22.

Marr began his coaching career as the University of Delaware’s offensive coordi-nator, where he worked with the school’s all-time leading scorer Anthony DiMarzo. From 1992-94, the Blue Hens captured three consecutive North Atlantic Conference championships and earned a top-20 national ranking in each season. Marr was also an assistant on the United States team that won the 1999 World Cup.

As a collegiate player at Johns Hopkins University, Marr was an attackman on the 1987 national championship squad and the ‘89 national runner-up team. The Blue Jays garnered four straight NCAA berths during his career. He received a B.S. in social and behavorial sciences in 1991.

A native of Yorktown, N.Y., Marr was a high school All-American who twice led his team to the state’s semifinal round. He and his wife, Traci, a special education teacher, have three children, Kyle, Jordyn and Keeley.

NO. 1 UALBANY PULLS OFF EPIC COMEBACK TO DEFEAT NO. 2 MARYLAND

The #1 UAlbany men’s lacrosse team pulled off a comeback for the ages, outscoring #2 Maryland 5-0 in the fourth quarter, including four goals in the final 6:30, to win 11-10 in College Park.

Maryland scored in the first 31 seconds as Jake Burnhardt netted a goal close range. After defending on man-down, Connor Fields drew a double team and found Jakob Patterson on the doorstep for the close shot and score. Maryland took back the lead two minutes later with a pass across the defense to Logan Wisnauskas for the long range shot and score. UAlbany had a long offense possession with four shots, but Maryland held, scoring the other way with a Bubba Fairman bounce shot score. Maryland led 3-1 after the first quarter.

UAlbany got a goal back to begin the second quarter as Fields kept dodging and spinning to get off a defender, getting space and scoring from 10

yards out. UAlbany held on defense on a couple of Maryland shots, but a third attempt on a quick restart off a push was a goal by Adam DiMillo. Maryland added two more quick goals to lead by four; Kyle McClancy got one back in the final two minutes of the half, rolling inside his defender and scoring point blank. UAlbany trailed 6-3 at the break.

Maryland scored two goals in the first five minutes of the 3rd, with Wisnauskas scoring while the Terrapins were man-up, and Fairman adding a second. Off a shot clock warning, Fields was open straight away for the rip and score with 7:10 left in the quarter. Five minutes later, UAlbany rolled off two quick goals, an over the shoulder, back to the goal shot and score from Patterson, then McClancy emerged from behind the cage and scored to pull the Great Danes within two. Maryland scored two goals to lead 10-6 after three.

Into the fourth quarter, UAlbany notched a quick goal, as Maryland led 10-7 going to the final 6:30.

At the 6:14 mark, McClancy made a stutter step move inside his defender to score on the doorstep. TD Ierlan kept winning faceoffs, as Patterson got next to the circle and scored. With 4:28 left, Patterson again got the ball, hitting a blazing shot under the crossbar to tie the game at 10-10.

Maryland got possession on the next faceoff and ran down the clock as Jake Bernhardt shot high, as JD Colarusso made the save. After a clear and timeout, Fields on the run hit a bouncing shot past the keeper to give UAlbany its first lead of the game with 1:16. UAlbany won the faceoff and got the clock down to 10 seconds before Maryland got the ball. The ride held the final 10 seconds as UAlbany took the victory 11-10.
