International Students's MessageThird-year (Ph.D. Degree Program) student in the Graduate School of East Asian Cultures

Liu Yang (劉 陽)Country/region: China

I research Japanese translations of Chinese literature at the Graduate School of East Asian Cultures. The course that I find most interesting is “Introduction to Cultural Negotiation Studies.” The class uses a relay approach that brings us a new professor every week so that all of the professors in the Graduate School of East Asian Cultures have an opportunity to teach for over a year. The course has offered a precious experience through exposure to the latest research findings in cultural negotiation studies.

Kansai University has an extensive range of exchanges with universities in other countries. The Graduate School of East Asian Cultures I belong to host universities in countries like China, South Korea, Italy, and Germany every year. Last year, those presentations were held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These joint presentations allow me to encounter knowledge from research fields other than my own and take a new look at my research from a different angle.

Since my future goal is to become a Japanese instructor, I also take courses designed to train Japanese instructors, apart from my research. I’m working on mastering as much knowledge in the area of Japanese education as possible.

Kansai University also offers extensive support for international students. The Division of International Affairs plays the lead role in providing services for international students, and its staff members are always happy to offer thoughtful advice.

When I applied for the Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Foundation, the division’s staff offered me painstaking support and guidance over the six months between the screening of my application documents and my interview with the foundation that sponsors the scholarship. They even staged a mock interview as part of the preparation process. As a result, I’m receiving financial support from the Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Foundation recipient.

Kansai University also has a library whose collection ranks on par with those of Japan’s leading institutions. Its campus offers beauty that rivals the best sightseeing destinations when cherry blossoms are in full bloom in spring. I would encourage any international students interested in attending Kansai University to make that dream come true to enjoy rich student life.

Fourth-year student in the Department of Informatics, Faculty of Infomatics

Bui Cuong THINHCountry/region: Vietnam

For me, the learning environment was the most important consideration when I was deciding where to study. Kansai University has one of the Kansai region's biggest libraries and an extensive range of equipment to aid in study and research, making for a perfect learning environment. The university's excellent name recognition was another aspect of its appeal.

The Faculty of Informatics, where I belong, offers a broad range of courses covering social information systems, media system information, and computing systems. Of the courses I've taken, the most interesting has been Venture Business Theory. The class allowed me to study basic venture business know-how while gradually developing an understanding of such businesses' practical thinking and techniques. As a result of three years of complex work learning in the faculty, I have been receiving a scholarship from the Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Foundation since April 2021.

The Faculty of Informatics is located on the Takatsuki Campus, one of Kansai University's four campuses. The Takatsuki campus has only the Faculty of Informatics and the Graduate School of Informatics, so the number of international students is small. However, there are some advantages to having a small number of students. The international students all know one another. They deepen exchanges by eating meals together on campus and preparing traditional dishes from their countries at their dorms or boardinghouses during their free time.

My future dream is to create a company that will provide IT professionals who will bridge IT companies in Vietnam and Japan. Vietnam has been pouring resources into training talented IT professionals in recent years. However, many university graduates are forced to take jobs in other fields because they cannot find IT-related work. By contrast, Japan has been experiencing a sustained shortage of IT workers, driving up associated labor costs. Both problems could be solved if there were a way to introduce Vietnamese IT engineers to countries like Japan that don't have enough IT professionals. To realize this dream, I'm augmenting my study of specialized IT knowledge and venture business theory in the Faculty of Informatics by participating in lectures related to startups and business operations and studying foreign languages independently.

Kansai University offers an excellent environment and support structures to help students achieve their dreams. I would encourage you to chase your dreams and enjoy a fulfilling life as a Kansai university student to have a bright future.
