MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

The Faculty of Medicine of Iasi was founded in 1879 and has continued to grow, throughout 135 years of existence, as a true medical school, which trained thousands of practitioners.

Higher medical education in Iasi was represented by great personalities such as C.I. Parhon, Francisc Rainer, Mihai Ciucă, Grigore T. Popa, who have provided a solid foundation for our faculty.

At present, the Faculty of Medicine hosts more than 700 students for each year of study. The training of our 5,072 students is provided by 626 professors, associate professors, lecturers and teaching assistants, which belong to six departments of basic and clinical sciences, and are professionals that guarantee optimal conditions for studies of a high level for the future physicians.

The training of our graduates continues even after the end of the university, through many forms of continuing medical education. The Faculty is also responsible for the training of 1,865 residents in 36 specialties and 242 PhD candidates and provides update training for specialists from eight counties, included in the Region of north-east of Romania.

In addition to the educational, academic and postgraduate activity, the teaching staff of the Faculty is involved in the development of studies and research, as well as ensuring a higher level of medical assistance in all 13 university hospitals in Iasi.

Today, the missions of the Faculty of Medicine are: education, research and social responsibility.

In Iasi was also founded in 1833 the first scientific society in Romania and in 1887 was published the first medical journal in the south-east of Europe, “The Medical Surgical Journal”, a publication that encourages also today multidisciplinary research across the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Grigore T. Popa” and has a great visibility because it is a publication quoted in the international databases and is in the process of registration in the ISI system.

In the last seven years, since Romania is a member of the European Union, the main objectives of our Faculty are directed towards increasing our academic track record, in an upward progression, which allows us to consolidate the national and international reputation of our faculty.

All these represent important reasons for inviting you to join us to become students of the Faculty of Medicine of Iasi.

Professor Doina AZOICĂI, M.D., Ph.D.

PRESENT AND PERSPECTIVES In recent years the Faculty of Medicine has undergone a

process of rebirth, the willingness to adapt to new trends in European and global medical education. Renewing the structures, promoting new courses and an efficient and attractive curriculum, Faculty of Medicine continues to fulfill its mission to train professionals of tomorrow hospitals. As an expression of the continuing need for training health personnel Iasi University offers numerous forms of training and postgraduate (doctoral studies, training courses, Academic Schools).

Measure of the quality and prestige of the faculty is given by scientific research. In this faculty are carried out both fundamental and applied scientific research of outstanding quality. In the modern trend of globalization Faculty of Medicine of Iasi maintain relationships with many similar institutions from abroad (France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, USA) and the large number of contracts for Socrates-Erasmus mobility is proving this.

QUALITY THROUGH TRADITION The quality of teaching process is one of the main indicators of

the prestige of our institution. The main objective of teachers is the quality of teaching. Faculty of Medicine of Iaşi has benefit over the years not only by renowned physicians, but also gifted teachers, true architects of higher medical education system such as Leon Scully, Ion Tănăsescu, Grigore T. Popa, C.I. Parhon, Vladimir Butureanu. Since the beginning of the twentieth century Professor Iuliu Haţieganu noted in Iasi "authentic teaching methods" forged to ensure and maintain academic quality, and some of which are still actual.

Teaching process is conducted in six departments, where complex working groups formed by professors and teaching staff work together to provide to the students all the necessary skills to become practicing physicians.

Evaluation of the quality of teaching is the first step to authenticate prestige of European and world universities.

In recent years, the Faculty of Medicine from Iasi was concerned about curricular and organizational harmonization with EU regulations, reaffirming by certification the quality of teaching process.

MISSION OF THE FACULTY Faculty of Medicine of Iasi missions are to promote the

advanced research by highly trained human resources and to prepare students by a rigorous academic program to become professional physicians, able to practice the medical profession at international standards worldwide. In addition to its role as an educational trainer, the Faculty of Medicine promotes the values of national culture and spirituality as part of the Romanian cultural community.

The role of our medical school is not limited only to promote its values at national level, justified by a tradition and an experience of over 135 years, but requires also an active involvement in the consolidation of European spirituality.

Faculty of Medicine of Iaşi blends tradition with modernity, classical rigor with dynamic new European academic guidance, modern research with social responsibility, managing to keep the guarantee of offered quality.

VISION OF THE FACULTY From our Faculty of Medicine emerged over time new

institutions, such as the Faculty of Dentistry (in 1965) or the Faculty of Medical Bioengineering (in 1994).

Renowned specialists from the Faculty of Medicine had an important contribution to the creation of these new institutions and being the graduates of the Faculty of Medicine they joined the mission of continuing the tradition and the prestige of medical education in Iasi.

PREMISES FOR ENGLISH PROGRAMME The programme in English language of the Faculty of Medicine

is supported since 1991, as an evidence of the evolution to European integration of many institutions from Romania.

Teachers of the Faculty of Medicine who are supporting and teaching program in English, have shown and proven a very good command of this language, evidenced by exchanges and international relations with the Anglo-Saxon countries and their certificates of knowledge of the language.

Also teacher’s research involves advanced knowledge of English required for reading and writing scientific papers. In addition, teachers and students can attend courses organized by the British Council and obtaining the English medical certificates proves a better knowledge of the culture and the English language.

Tradition of study in English in the undergraduate program, the collaboration on medical education faculties in Europe, USA, Australia and the logistics provided by U. M. P. "Grigore T. Popa"- Iaşi (library, accredited teachers to support teaching in English, adequate educational space, adapted curricula, the existence of credit transfer system), are all reasons to study in English at the Faculty of Medicine of Iaşi.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, RECOGNITION AND QUALITY ASSURANCE

The Faculty of Medicine in Iasi has ongoing relations of

scientific cooperation and academic exchange with renowned universities from Europe and beyond: Freiburg, Lyon, Amiens, Dijon, Nancy, Louvain, Torino, Parma and so on. Teachers and students travel to and from these universities in order to organize, deliver or benefit from learning opportunities.

In recent years, our Faculty has been especially concerned with achieving curricular and organizational compliance with the standards of the European Union. We recognize this as an ongoing process of self-assessment, adjustment and certification regarding first and foremost the quality of the act of teaching. Most important steps in this direction were the successful completion of full academic evaluations of our Faculty, last performed by the Evaluation Committee of CIDMEF in April 2014 (international organization representing the Deans of Faculties of Medicine from francophone countries, of which our Faculty has been an active member since 1992) another by ARACIS in 2013 (The Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education) and the recognition by ECFMG in 2006 (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates).

These certifications provide a framework for comparing and appreciating the teaching at our Faculty in European and international terms.

EUROPEAN CREDIT TRANSFER AND ACCUMULATION SYSTEM (ECTS)

The introduction of credit transfer system is a realistically evaluation, by the relative loading of the curriculum by each subject.

The ratio of training hours / credits is reflecting the policy of the Faculty of Medicine in training and the importance of student work. The system is an effective tool for monitoring changes made to the curriculum. The transition from the academic year 1998/1999 to the credit transfer system at the Faculty of Medicine, U. M. P. "Grigore T. Popa"- Iaşi appraised system required a high degree of readiness of students.

European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System allow: • student mobility • recognition of study periods • recognition of diplomas • diversification of the student's choice • the flexibility of the study program • integration into the European education standards • comparison of study programs • design flexible curricula in the curriculum • compact recognition of periods of study conducted in other

universities European Credit Transfer System which ensures full recognition

of study periods at other institutions in the country and abroad, is a prerequisite for inclusion in the Erasmus and Socrates Programme.

The standard length of a discipline remains one semester according to the curriculum. Normal load of a semester is 30 credits conventional quantified regardless of the number of subjects studied. Any deviations must be compensated during the academic year, so that academic year is normally loaded with 60 credits.

Page 13: university hospitals from iasi

11

Credits, amounting to 60 per year, are distributed relative on each subjects’ importance. By measuring the amount of required work, learning credits can accurately monitor the curricula.

LIVING AND STUDYING IN IASI

STUDENT LIFE The student life of Iasi is quite pleasurable. Over 60,000 people from Iasi population are students. Many of

them are friendly and speak some conversational English, so it would be easy to find your way around the city if you happen to get lost. The city is a perfect environment for a medical student. Everything you will need is just within walking distance!

From the moment you arrive to the Iasi airport, you should have no problem getting accommodation (if you have not done so before hand), just tell the taxi driver: “Hotel Astoria” or “Hotel Unirea”. These hotels are quite affordable and are right next to the university. Once accustomed, it is possible to get your own dorm room either in Copou or in Tudor, and that can easily be done by speaking with the secretary of the faculty. However, many students choose to stay in apartments, as it gives privacy and a feeling of your own 'home'.

The entertainment is everywhere, from little coffee shops, to clubs and bars, to nice restaurants and outside fast food places. Many also attend the theater and opera. Fashion is also quite popular here; therefore you can find many boutiques, malls and little stores around town. In other words, entertainment is not a problem; eventually everyone finds his or her way.

The national currency of Romania is RON, which has an exchange rate of 3.3:1 with US Dollar and 4.4:1 with Euro. The prices are reasonable.

If you ever want to send a postcard or a package to your home, there are many post offices and DHL offices around town, literally within 5-10 minutes walking distance from university. Transportation is cheap and efficient. A one-way ticket will cost you 1.8 RON, and it can be used for tram or bus or minibus. The buses and tram run from about 05:00 to 23:00. Taxi is another famous mode of transportation

Page 31: university hospitals from iasi

29

around the city; it is fast, cheap and quite reasonably priced, less than a couple of Euros to most part of the city.

As for sports, football is by far the most popular here. But you can also find tennis, basketball and fitness centers. In the summer, everybody spends time outside, whether walking or having a lunch or even a coffee. Nearby the airport you can find Ciric Lake, which is popular destination for barbeque or grill festivities.

TRAVEL TO IAŞI Your place of arrival in Romania will be, most likely, Otopeni

Airport near Bucharest. You can take a taxi/bus from the airport to the North Railway

Station (Gara de Nord) in Bucharest, from where all the trains to Iasi leave.

There are several trains every day from Bucharest to Iasi. The best choice, due to the comfort provided, would be the Inter City (IC) train. The trip takes about 6 hours by the Inter City (IC) and about 7 hours by the Rapid (R) or Accelerate (Acc) trains.

For information about the train schedule and ticket prices you can visit http://www.infofer.ro.

TIPS: It is advisable to take a taxi that is registered by any taxi company and not a private one (even if it bears the label “taxi”) from the airport to the railway station.

It is always advisable to buy a 1st class train ticket. Train schedule can suffer small changes every year, so it is better to buy a ticket directly from the railway station and not to make a reservation before arrival.

If you decide to take the plane, you should know there are at

least three airlines companies that have direct flights to Iasi: Tarom Air Transport, Austrian Airlines and Blue Air. Tarom Air Transport has four internal flights per day.

The trip from Bucharest to Iasi takes about one hour. International flights come from Austria (Vienna), from Great

Britain (London), from Israel (Tel Aviv) and from Italy (Rome, Torino, Bologna).

TIPS: When you reach Bucharest (Otopeni Airport) and you must change planes for Iasi, you must pick-up your luggage and do the check-in again. Also, it is advisable to buy your plane ticket from a tourist agency, where you can be advised about the lowest prices and the most convenient flights.

Page 35: university hospitals from iasi

33

Another possibility to reach Iasi is the minibus (maxi-taxi).

There are several minibus stations near the North Railway Station (Gara de Nord) in Bucharest. There are at least 4 trips to Iasi organized per day. The trip takes about 6 hours.

TIPS: If you have a lot of luggage, the trip by minibus is less recommended, especially if there are many passengers.

For more information about the city you are invited to visit the official website of the Touristic Information Center of Iaşi.
