WB HEI students’ visit to Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, May 28 – June 1, 2018The student training in Ljubljana took place at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of electrical engineering between 28th of May and 1st of June 2018. The student training agenda was sent to partners a week before training and was acknowledged by the participating partners. The students who attended the training came from the following institutions:

• Higher Technical Professional School in Zvečan• University of Banja Luka• School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Applied Studies, Belgrade• Singidunum University

The student training was composed of presentations of the Faculty and University with an emphasis on multimedia and digital TV related study programmes, infrastructure and study process, followed by workshops, lectures and visits to the industrial partners. A detailed description of student training is described below:

Day 1:

The visiting students were first given a presentation of the University in Ljubljana and the Faculty of electrical engineering by the Head of multimedia group at the Laboratory of multimedia. The presentation included the high level presentation of the history of University and a more detailed presentation of the curriculums at the Faculty of electrical engineering.

The presentation was followed by a tour of the Faculty which included a visit of the UL Multimedia labs, including the studio, editing laboratory, demonstrational room, user experience and virtual reality laboratory and other Faculty premises included in the Multimedia study programme. The day concluded with a discussion and wrap up.

Day 2:

The second day started with a practicum, consulting and discussion regarding the audio-visual equipment used in the Multimedia study programme. The students had the opportunity to discuss the recording and broadcasting related issues with the Faculty staff and were also given a demonstration and a tour of the reporting vehicle, used for laboratory work as well as for broadcasting of events.

Architecture of OB truck has been compared with today's modern architecture and with future upcoming technologies. Changes in workflow, development of systems and specifics of decentralized SMPTE2110 architecture were overviewed and concerns with underlying questions were stressed while comparing with actual technologies. At the end challenges of future MM engineering were discussed with students.

The workshop was followed by a lecture given by assoc. prof. Matevž Pogačnik on the topic of accessibility solutions in TV broadcasting, web page access and mobile devices. The day concluded with a discussion and wrap up.

Day 3:

The student training started with a visit of the industrial partners of the Faculty of electrical engineering, which included the Multimedia-vision company (MMV) and the Internet institute company (ININ).

The MMV company has presented a number of digital TV solutions focusing mostly on IPTV, which included the set-top-box applications and backend services, providing the best user experience for the end users of IPTV operators.

The ININ company has presented a solution for monitoring of internet mobile and wired connections with the goal of ensuring best quality of service (QoS) for multimedia applications and audio-visual content, where high bandwidth is required. The students were presented with specific hardware and software solutions.

The company visits were concluded with a lecture by assist. prof. Jože Guna, who presented the latest advances in the domain of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) and given a number of practical demonstrations. One of the lecture focuses was also the utilization of AR technology for digital TV broadcasting either as a source of additional information or as an accessibility tool for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The day concluded with a discussion and wrap up.

Day 4:

The fourth day was mostly focused on video production, post production and broadcasting aspects of video distribution. A lecture focusing on video production was given by the head of multimedia center Klemen Pečnik, followed by a workshop on the same topic. Short introduction into computer graphics in video production line was presented and practical experiments for creating animated CG Titling were presented and some examples were made by students in Adobe After Effects. At the end usage of CG, CG systems and CG workflow in low-budget production were highlighted.

The second part of day 4 training included a moderated discussion related to broadcasting technologies and the evolution from standard DVB based broadcasting to IP based broadcasting.

The day concluded with a discussion and wrap up.

Day 5:

On the last day the student training was organized at the national radio and television broadcasting company premises (RTV Slovenija). The tour included a visit of live television studios, directing and editing studios, followed by color correction premises, the data-centre and broadcasting premises. The participants had the opportunity to see the background of the TV broadcaster operations and procedures. Studio equipment and scenography was also presented, including the lighting, chroma key and background settings of the virtual studio equipment. This was followed by the visit of separate directing studios with video and audio real time editing capabilities. Next, the off line video editing and color correction studio was presented. The tour concluded with a presentation of the broadcasting equipment encompassing the server back end infrastructure, encoders, multiplexers and radio broadcasting equipment.
