Example of Hoffman-La Roche
• In 1996/97 spent $1.7 billion on research and development
• Development 70%, ie mostly clinical testing of new therapeutic compounds.
• Research-Discovery 30% • Outside of the company 5-10% of the discovery
expenditure, • This proportion is growing sharply to about 25%.

In Addition They Support
• Large number of PhD students• Postdoctoral fellowships and • Collaboration with universities on specific research
where the university has particular expertise. • Global activity and not confined to Europe.

Ideal Collaboration
Direct Response to Industry's needs– R&D Agreement
• IP Clause– Technology Development
» In University by Faculty» In company by Company Scientists» Either Place by Collaboration
• Joint Ownership
• First Right to Negotiate

Big Company’s Need•The research currently being done was not as productive as it would need to be in the future to maintain current business success. •The target is for each top 10 pharmaceutical company to produce 3-5 new successful chemical entities each year (currently companies typically are achieving about 1): •This would require about 35-50 new projects to be initiated each year.
16
Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration www.crdf.org
Big Picture• Such a growth in activity will require a sharp increase in skilled people, or
• in the productivity of those currently employed, or the out-sourcing of projects, and particularly a lot of new ideas.
• Ideas were an essential element in achieving success, they alone were not always sufficient;
• successful innovations did not always rapidly follow from dramatic discoveries; eg monoclonal antibodies.
17
Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration www.crdf.org
Final Picture
To achieve all of this activity,
Industry and universities must understand each other better and work more closely and productively
together.
