At Weston College, it is our mission to deliver an outstanding Higher Education experience, enabling success and inspiring ambition. As University Centre Weston, more and more students choose to study degree courses with us every year. We have invested millions in our campuses and facilities, and have recently completed an extension to our University Campus to accommodate our growing student numbers at degree-level.

We also celebrated some fantastic student achievements last year. For the second year in a row, one of our students won a national design award at the New Designers exhibition in London, picking up the Design Council’s Future Pioneers Award. In addition, one of our Applied Computing graduates is now working towards his PhD with Southampton University thanks to the innovative dissertation project he completed at the College.

Year on year, our results exceed national figures. Last year, 20% of students achieved First Class Honours, significantly above the UK average, which shows why our university partners have such confidence in us.

Our university-level provision was recognised when it was awarded the highest judgement possible by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), the body responsible for academic quality and standards in UK Higher Education. We have been recognised as an ‘Outstanding’ college by Ofsted and have been awarded two prestigious awards; College of the Year

and Overall FE Provider of the Year. We constantly review and develop what we offer by working closely with local employers and university partners.

This prospectus is an excellent starting point to find out what Weston College can offer you, but paying us a visit will allow you to see a whole lot more.

Our degrees work for employersWeston College’s degree programmes are specifically designed to prepare graduates for the world of work.

They blend academic study with work-based learning and have been developed in partnership with employers to provide you with the skills required in the modern job market.

But don’t just take our word for it – here’s what employers have to say.

“What we look for in people is enthusiasm, and a desire to learn, to constantly improve and try out new ideas and techniques, pushing themselves and encouraging others. This is exactly what Keith has – a confidence to try new things and to just get stuck in at the deep end, whatever the project. Communication is another key thing, and he has that in spades – able to talk to all his colleagues and ask for advice and convey ideas!”

Inspector Sharon Bennett, Weston Neighbourhood Policing Team

“I have been hugely impressed with the calibre of the students on this course – they have demonstrated the skills and behaviours I would expect from a police officer and put into practice skills learnt on the course in a real working environment.

“The students have added value to work I do, supporting my officers at community events, helping me to problem-solve real issues. I have formed a genuine partnership with the course which has enriched both our organisations and several students have successfully gone on to work for us, as Special Constables, PCSOs and Police Volunteers.”

Our university partnersWe work with two university partners in the neighbouring cities of Bath and Bristol to provide you with outstanding degree courses. Working with the universities gives you the best of both worlds – a degree from a university, access to their excellent facilities and resources, but with all the added benefits of studying in the more intimate and supportive environment of University Centre Weston.

Bath Spa University is a leading educational institution in creativity, culture and enterprise committed to ensuring that our graduates are socially engaged global citizens. The Foundation Degrees are put together with help from businesses so that you will be well prepared to meet the needs of local employers.

At the end of your course, you’ll have the choice of progressing into employment or applying to join the third year of an associated honours degree course. You’ll be part of the university just like any other Bath Spa student. A member of the Student Union and university library, you will be encouraged to visit the university to take advantage of its resources.

There are about 7,500 students in Bath Spa University’s close-knit community – big enough to offer a wide range of courses and first-rate facilities, but small enough that students receive individual support and tutor access. The university places particular emphasis on creativity, culture and enterprise. In the National Student Survey, Bath Spa students consistently record a high level of satisfaction, and the university places particular emphasis on developing students for careers in the creative industries. No wonder it’s a popular choice!

Freshers’ Week As you would expect from a top Higher Education provider, we start with a Freshers’ Week to introduce you to life in Weston-super-Mare, your partner university and each other. We’ll make sure that you have fun, make friends and ease yourself into the academic side of life by meeting your tutors and fellow students.

There are social events and activities during the day and every evening to help you meet other degree students. In recent years these events have included school disco club night, karaoke, toga party, ultimate Frisbee, bingo, a pub quiz, under-the-sea foam party, paintballing and an awards night!

Join the union One of the benefits of being a student is that you can become a member of the National Union of Students (NUS) and Weston College’s Student Union. The Student Union assists, provides services for, and represents all our students.

The Student Union can offer you:

■■ NUS Extra cards which offer student discounts

■■ International Student Identity Card (ISIC)

■■ Social events and trips.

In addition, you will become a member of the union at your university. This means you can use their facilities and services, join sports teams and participate in loads of clubs and societies.

Student engagement We take student views very seriously and want to make sure we listen and respond to your opinions and feedback. You can make your voice heard through a variety of means, including Student Forums, Staff Student Liaison Committees (SSLCs) and the National Student Survey (NSS).

Students are involved in decision making, policy design and quality enhancement at all levels in the organisation and we consult with students with regards to new developments.

We have a Student Engagement Officer, who will encourage you to have your say, raise any issues you have and make suggestions to enhance your experience. You don’t need to make an appointment – just pop into the office.

Although we hope you will never need it, there is a system in place for you to make a complaint, without prejudice, if you are dissatisfied with any element of your experience at Weston College. Please contact us for a copy of our complaints policy and procedure.

Student CharterOur Student Charter, developed by our Student Engagement Officer in consultation with students, describes our commitment to students, and what you can expect from us in terms of teaching and learning. It also gives you an idea of what we will expect of you during your time with us. You can download it from www.weston.ac.uk/hestudentcharter

Read all about it Peer Press is our exclusive degree student newsletter, designed and produced by students. It’s one of the ways we all keep in touch with each other, make sure you are up-to-date with everything that’s going on, and pass on information regarding student loans and social events, for example. We hope, as students, you will want to write articles to be included. If you fancy yourself as a budding journalist or editor why not get involved in the design, content or production? You can check out the latest edition at www.weston.ac.uk/peerpress

Living the student life We want you to achieve your full potential, but we also want to make sure you have a great time as a student at Weston College.

Get involvedThere are plenty of ways to get involved. Every course elects student representatives from each year of study to attend meetings and have an input into how your course and the College are run. Representatives also work within the Student Union, attending key meetings with the College’s corporate and senior managers.

Every year, we appoint students to a number of extra-curricular positions:

■■ Student Ambassadors represent the College at key events such as open days and school drop-ins

■■ Peer Mentors are second and third year students who provide support to first year students, building relationships and acting as a positive role model and point of contact for advice and guidance

■■ Freshers’ Angels are second and third year students who help organise and run Freshers’ Week and support first year students to settle into life at Weston College, including providing support to students in accommodation.

To reward students who take on these roles, we have introduced a scheme called the Student Engagement and Achievement (SEA) Award. Students can earn three tiers of award, based on the numbers of hours completed, and will be presented with a certificate showing the type of activities and skills gained.

“Being a Freshers’ Angel was an amazing experience. I helped to organise events with a great group of people which meant I made loads of new friends from other courses. It also felt really good to meet all the freshers and make them feel welcome.” Serena, FdA Uniformed and Public Services

The HE Unit at Weston College is here for you throughout the year. We offer a friendly and helpful service organising the degree student accommodation, and helping those who choose to rent privately. We can also help you find a place to rent in your second and third years by giving you advice on what to look out for as well as putting you in touch with our preferred landlords.

Where will I live? There are a number of houses and flats exclusively for Weston College degree-level students. Our HE Unit allocates the accommodation on a first-come,first-served basis, although if you’re coming from outside the area and you’ve chosen one of our degrees as your first choice through UCAS, you’ll get priority over other students.

We have places to live within walking distance of the Knightstone Campus and on bus routes to the University Campus. All students have their own room and generally share kitchens and bathrooms. We also have a number of en-suite rooms.

Rent varies from £96 to £126 a week* including utility bills (water, gas, electricity) and internet access, and contracts usually run for 48 weeks.

The Alex is in the centre of town above a student-friendly pub – which is great for a lively student experience! Up to seven students live here, and some of the rooms have en-suite bathrooms.

Birnbeck Halls is our largest property with 27 bedrooms, some of which are en-suite. It has shared kitchens, lounges and games room – along with great sea views.

Madeira Cove has 15 bedrooms and is situated on the seafront, so some of the rooms benefit from great sea views. It’s only a few minutes’ walk from the Knightstone Campus and has some parking. There are only a few en-suite rooms, so most students share kitchens and bathrooms.

Warwick Court is our quiet halls. It’s split into flats for two or three students, each with their own bathroom and kitchen. Warwick Court is on the seafront and just a few minutes’ walk from the Knightstone Campus or on a bus route to University Campus. Up to 16 students can live here. This property is usually reserved for students who would prefer a quiet place to live where they can study without interruption. In addition, students with particular disabilities may be prioritised to live in this property. As a result there is likely to be a mix of first, second and third year students.

*2014 prices. Please refer to our website for up-to-date information

Finding a place to call homeFor many of you, coming to Weston College will mean moving away from home for the first time. So it’s no surprise that organising accommodation is top of the to-do list for most students.

“I love living in student accommodation as I have been able to make lots of friends from various different courses and gain independence. Moving away from home can be daunting but the College are fantastic with helping you settle in.” Lizi, Early Childhood Studies

For more details on how to apply and how accommodation is allocated please visit www.weston.ac.uk/accommodation

Qualifications explainedWeston College offers a suite of over 30 degree courses in a wide variety of disciplines, all designed around the needs of students and employers.

Foundation DegreesA Foundation Degree is a vocational Higher Education qualification equivalent to the first two years of an Honours Degree. Foundation Degrees combine academic study with work-based learning and are designed with the support of employers to equip you with a specialised skill set for a particular area of work.

Foundation Degrees offer flexible options for progression. A Foundation Degree is a full Level 5 qualification in its own right, but can also be topped up to a full Honours Degree by completing an additional year. This additional year can follow on immediately from a Foundation Degree, but can also be completed several years in the future, giving you the option to continue in education or take a break depending on your circumstances.

There are currently 23* Foundation Degrees on offer at Weston College, validated by either Bath Spa University or the University of the West of England.

* FdSc Games and Animation Production subject to final approval

Honours top-upsAn Honours top-up is a one year qualification enabling conversion of a Foundation Degree or equivalent qualification into a full Honours Degree.

How to apply There are two ways to apply for a course depending on whether you want to study full-time or part-time.

Apply for a full-time course through UCASTo apply for a full-time course, you will need to fill in a University and College Admissions Service (UCAS) application form online, following UCAS guidelines, and submit it through the website,

www.ucas.com. The UCAS website gives lots of information about making your application.

It is important that you log into UCAS Track regularly. This is the main way UCAS communicates with students. All decisions regarding offers and interviews/auditions appear on UCAS Track. It is also how you respond to any offer of places that you have received.

Deferred entryIf you want to apply for deferred entry then apply as normal via UCAS and tick the box for deferred entry; if you have already applied and would like to defer to next year then please get in touch with us and the decision will then appear on UCAS Track.

Accreditation of prior learning If you have previously studied a related course at university or have extensive related employment, you may be able to get exemption from parts of your chosen course by accreditation of prior learning. You will need to provide sufficient and appropriate evidence. Please contact us for further information.

Getting help with your applicationWe can provide guidance notes to help you with filling in your UCAS application and writing a personal statement. Please contact the HE Unit to request copies of these.

Dates and deadlines■■ You can submit your application to UCAS from September 2015

(for 2016 entry)

■■ The closing date for normal UCAS applications is 15th January 2016

■■ The final date to submit applications before they are automatically entered into Clearing is 30th June 2016.

We recommend that you submit your application as early as possible. Applications made after the deadlines have passed are not guaranteed to be considered if places are limited.

How we will deal with your applicationWhen your application arrives from UCAS, the relevant admissions tutor will consider it to check that:

■■ You meet the entry requirements

■■ You have the experience and skills necessary to succeed at the course

■■ You demonstrate commitment and motivation to study the course.

If you meet the entry requirements, and no additional information is required, we will make you an offer, which will be communicated to you via UCAS Track. This is also where you make a decision on your offers.

1

Page 97: University-level Prospectus 2016/17

95

If you have any queries about your application or would like a copy of our admissions policy, give us a call on 01934 411 409.

If additional information is required, you may be invited to interview or audition with a course tutor. You will usually be given at least a weeks’ notice to prepare, and we will let you know what the interview will involve and what you will need to bring with you. For some courses, we may also ask you to submit a portfolio, either online or in person. Full details will be sent out to you via email and through UCAS Track. Please refer to individual course pages for details of whether these additional selection methods are required for your course of interest.

Apply for a part-time course direct 1. Fill in a direct entry application form and return it to us. Please contact our Higher Education Unit on 01934 411 409 for the correct form. Remember to include copies of your qualifications with your application.

Remember to complete a part-time student finance application online or ask for a part-time loan form (PTL).

1. You will be invited to attend an orientation day and meet some of the lecturing team and current students.

Entry requirements On each course page, you will find specific entry requirements, which will usually take the form of either a UCAS tariff in a specified range, or achievement of a Foundation Degree with an average grade profile in a specified range.

In addition, we prefer applicants to have achieved English and Maths GCSE at grade C or above, or accepted equivalent such as Functional Skills. If you plan to progress to a Postgraduate Certificate of Education after your degree, these qualifications are essential, generally along with GCSE Science or equivalent. Higher Apprenticeships are work-based learning programmes that lead to nationally recognised qualifications at the same level as degrees.

For example, a Higher Apprenticeship at:

■■ Level 4 and 5 is equivalent to a Foundation Degree (FdSc/FdA), Higher National Certificate or Higher National Diploma

■■ Level 6 is equivalent to an Honours (BSc/BA) Degree ■■ Level 7 is equivalent to a Master’s Degree.

Higher Apprenticeships provide a practical, hands-on route into professions that have traditionally been the preserve of graduates.

UK employers have recognised skills shortages in specific areas of the economy and Higher Apprenticeships have been designed in collaboration with businesses to enable the UK workforce to meet future challenges.

Learning takes place in the workplace as well as college. It’s a real alternative to university, providing you with a practical head-start and enabling employers and businesses to grow their future leaders.

The course is pitched at university level, enabling you to gain the technical knowledge, professional skills and wider business competencies required for industry.

Weston College offers Higher Apprenticeships in a number of subjects, which provide pathways into hundreds of job roles.

We offer Higher Apprenticeships in the following areas and will be able to offer more in the near future:

■■ Accounting ■■ Business and Administration ■■ Care Leadership and Management ■■ Hospitality Management ■■ Management ■■ Contact Centre Operations.
