University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf Barco accuracy – a perfect fit for dental and oral medicine “The sharper and brighter the image, the more accurate the diagnosis and treatment. It would be such a shame to use world-class imaging systems without selecting the best medical displays to accurately diagnose the images,” said Dr. Andreas Fuhrman. Dr. Fuhrman is a world-renowned advocate of dental digital imaging systems. He was, for example, one of the first to introduce digital radiology and, later on, state-of-the-art 3D technology to the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, where he’s the head of the Department of Dental and Maxillo-Facial Radiology. To make sure the quality of the imaging systems is reflected on the screen, Fuhrmann’s department is fully equipped with Barco’s MDRC-2124 clinical review displays which, he believes “are market-leading and offer outstanding image quality and reliability.” “In my opinion, Barco is the world’s most experienced supplier of medical displays. They help us retain exceptional quality from the imaging modality to the display with astonishing anatomical detail.” Dr. Andreas Fuhrmann, Head of the Department of Dental and Maxillo-Facial Radiology at the Center for Dental and Oral Medicine, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf

The University Medical Center Hamburg-

Eppendorf (UKE) is the largest hospital in

the Hamburg region (1,400 beds) and one of

Europe’s most advanced hospitals. Medical

specialists at UKE invest in the latest medical

technology, including innovative IT solutions,

and research into advanced diagnostic and

therapeutic approaches for diseases. In line

with that quest, the Department of Dental

and Maxillo-Facial Radiology at the Center for

Dental and Oral Medicine was one of the early

advocates of digital radiography.

The requirements of Dr. Fuhrmann and his team were straightforward, yet challenging: guarantee the highest possible image quality using the smallest amount of radiation. Convinced of the benefits that digital radiography provides over film, Dr. Fuhrmann was one of the first to initiate the digital transition many years ago. “Digital images can be examined full-screen, enhanced and zoomed, thus increasing the quality of our diagnostics. In addition, it allows us to store and communicate images electronically, which supports faster and simpler patient referrals.”

Pioneering technology and imaging techniquesDr. Fuhrmann and his team have extensive experience in intra- and extra-oral dental radiography. The Department of Dental and Maxillo-Facial Radiology performs approximately 13,000 dental radiology examinations per year. In addition to X-ray the most common modality used by Dr. Fuhrmann and his 6-strong team is Cone Beam 3D Tomography (Dental Volume Tomography). The department also boasts three modern intraoral X-ray units and two digital panoramic units.

The latter deliver orthopantomograms, a panoramic scan of the entire jaw in a single rotation. In addition, the team were also early adopters of Cone Beam 3D Tomography, which ensures the best image quality possible and clinical advantage in pre-implant diagnostics, periodontal defects and in determining the outcome of regenerative surgical procedures. Here too, the Center works with cutting-edge technology such as the Galileos Comfort and Orthophos DVT. The installation of the Orthophos XG 3D, a high-tech X-ray unit with a cylindrical 3D volume at the Center was a world première in 2010.

Consistently excellent image quality“It is only logical that the excellent image quality that our top-notch imaging equipment delivers is reflected on our screens. If not, we are not truly capitalizing on our investment,” said Dr. Fuhrmann. On this basis he chose to team up with Barco over its competitors. His Center is fully equipped with Barco’s 24’’ wide-screen MDRC-2124 clinical review displays. Dr. Fuhrmann: “The display resolution is exceptionally high, as is the contrast ratio. In addition, the displays ensure outstanding luminance and provide accurate grayscale representations. The quality and detail we see in the images is excellent. A key part of this story is that the displays guarantee consistent DICOM-compliant image quality at all times, thanks to Barco’s automatic monitoring and reporting.”

Automatic calibration and quality assuranceBarco’s MDRC-2124 clinical review displays incorporate Backlight Output Stabilization (BLOS) technology, which ensures that maximum brightness is immediately available as soon as the display is switched on. The same BLOS sensor also guarantees a consistent, stabilized brightness level over the entire lifetime of the display. In addition, the displays were shipped with the MediCal QAWeb Premium software. This exclusive

system performs automated, intervention-free luminance checks at login and monitors luminance degradation over time. If the display no longer meets the DICOM standards, users are automatically notified. “MediCal QAWeb Premium helps us save a lot of precious time and resources, while providing us with complete diagnostic confidence,” Dr. Fuhrmann confirmed.

Advanced multimodality imagingThe MDRC-2124 displays help the Hamburg-based team review monochrome as well as color images. The wide 24-inch screen provides a flexible workspace ideally suited for simultaneous use of multiple images and clinical applications. “It is an ideal platform for comparing several images at one time in grayscale and color. Color is gaining in importance for dental and oral medicine. It is, for example, very helpful for reading DVT images. With the Barco displays, we can get an overview of the entire dental system in grayscale, while the 3D volume renderings can be viewed as they were intended in color. That combination ensures in-depth, diagnostic insight aided by the exceptional images produced on screen by the Barco displays.”

Most experienced playerDr. Fuhrmann concluded: “I am so glad to be working with Barco, which in my opinion is the most experienced supplier of medical displays worldwide. They help us retain the excellent image quality from the imaging modality to the display with astonishing anatomical detail. Thanks to the displays, we are able to clearly visualize concealed anatomic structures such as the alveolar bone, the extent of interdental and interradicular bone loss, root length, periodontal ligament space, and apical changes. This means we can achieve a more accurate dental treatment plan with improved clinical results, which is precisely our mission.”
