English Language Programs Activate your English!

The University of California, Riverside, International Education Programs offers a wide variety of short-term and long-term English language programs. Students can choose from three weeks to over one year of English language study, with opportunities to transfer to academic and professional programs.

The English language programs are designed for all levels of English speakers, from beginner to advanced, who want to improve their English and expand their educational opportunities or professional experience.

Intensive English Program (INT)provides students from beginner to advanced levels the opportunity to improve their fluency and focus on all English language skills (pages 8 and 9).

English for International Business (EIB)is designed for advanced-level students. The program focuses on improving specific English skills in a business environment, and includes site visits to local businesses (page 10).

Improving Oral Fluency (IOF)helps advanced-level students communicate more effectively by focusing on specific oral skills (page 11).

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)is designed for advanced-level students preparing to enter a college or university graduate or undergraduate program. EAP helps make the transition to an American university a smooth one (page 12).

Summer English Programs (SEP)offer students on summer vacation in July and August the opportunity to practice and improve their English skills, and to experience California (page 13).

Conversation and American Culture (CAC) gives students with limited time an opportunity to gain confidence in speaking and listening, and to experience California and American culture (page 14).

Custom Short-Term English Language Programs

feature opportunities for groups of 15 or more students to engage in sightseeing and cultural activities while practicing English. Program length and context can be customized, but is usually between one and four weeks (page 15).

Get University of California credit for English Studies

If you successfully complete the advanced levels of any 10-week English language program, you are eligible to receive University of California undergraduate elective credits, which may be transferable to any of the ten University of California campuses, and to various other universities in the U.S. and around the world.

50% Discount on Extension ClassesUCR Extension offers classes on a variety of subjects, including Business, Engineering, Arts, Science, and many general interest courses. IEP students who are at an advanced level (INT 500 and 600, EIB and IOF) may be eligible to take UCR Extension courses at a reduced rate.

Your Pathway to UCRStudents enrolled in UCR English language programs now have several opportunities to further their studies at the undergraduate level. High school graduates who have met the academic requirements for UCR, but may not have completed the SAT’s or have met the TOEFL requirement, can now enroll in the UCR Admission Preparation Program (UCR-APP) (pages 20 and 21). Students who do not have the academic credentials to enter UCR directly can still graduate from UCR by enrolling in the UCR International Transfer Track (UCR-ITT) (page 22). UCR-ITT places them in a two-year California Community College with direct transfer to UCR for qualifying students after two years. Visiting students are welcome to study at UCR for up to one year through the University Credit Program (UCP) (pages 24 and 25).

American Conversation Partner ProgramAs a 10-week program student, you can enroll in the American Conversation Partner Program, which matches you with selected American students or community members for weekly conversation. The American students and community members who sign up for this program are internationally minded and interested in learning about other cultures.

The American Conversation Partner Program is a great way to make new friends, learn about American culture, and practice your English.

Social and Cultural ActivitiesWe know you will want to see all the famous California sights. We offer a range of optional social and cultural activities, which may include trips to Disneyland, Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs, Universal Studios and Sea World. We also organize regular social activities so that you have many opportunities to meet and make friends with students from around the world.

Whether you are a beginner needing an immersion environment, or an advanced student wishing to brush up on your English skills, the Intensive English Program (INT) has a level that meets your language needs. Six levels of English, offered in 4-, 6- and 10-week sessions (and in a special 8-week accelerated session in the summer), focus on improving specific skills in the four main areas of English – oral skills development, reading, writing, and grammar.

INT is offered in an intensive format, with students studying English daily. You have several different INT teachers, giving you an opportunity to hear different English voices and learn from different education experts. Our teachers are highly educated and experienced professionals with extensive ESL experience, both in the U.S. and in international environments. They are friendly and want to help you meet your goals.

Advanced-Level ElectivesIf you are an INT student in a 10-week session and in an advanced level, you may increase your skills by choosing an elective course as part of your program. The University of California, Riverside, has extensive experience in developing programs for groups of students from upper beginner to advanced. If you are a teacher or school that would like to send your students as a group to UC Riverside, our custom designed programs may best suit your needs.

Custom ProgramIf you have a group of 15 or more, ages 12 and over, who have limited travel times but want to practice and build confidence in English while enjoying all the wonderful California sights, we can design a custom program to suit their needs. These programs combine English practice with sightseeing and cultural activities. The program length can be customized, but is normally between one and four weeks.

Housing OptionsHomestay: Students under 18 years old will be placed with American families in homestay. Placements are double occupancy. Host families provide three meals a day, as well as daily transportation to and from school and school-related activities.

Dormitory: Groups of students 18 years old or over have the option to stay in our campus residence, which offers single-, double- and triple-occupancy rooms. A meal plan is available for purchase.

Group leaders: Double-occupancy housing in our university residence is complimentary for a group escort when the group has a minimum of 15 students. Escorts must be able to communicate with UCR staff in English.

Understanding the California Postsecondary Education System

The California postsecondary education system consists of over 140 public and over 120 private universities and colleges.

the University of California System (UC)The University of California system is California’s top research university, which comprises 10 campuses and offers degrees at the Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels. UC campuses at Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz provide stimulating environments that foster world-class educational and research opportunities, and generate a wide range of benefits and services that touch the lives of people around the world every day.

the California State University System (CSU)The CSU is the largest university system in the United States and consists of 23 campuses. The universities within the CSU are primarily for undergraduate education, although many of the larger campuses offer Master’s degrees and since 2007, CSU is authorized to award Doctoral degrees in Education (Ed.D.).

the California Community College System (CCC)The California Community College System has 112 campuses and provides first- and second-year courses only, leading to Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees. Students can then transfer to the CSU or UC system to complete their third and fourth years, and receive their Bachelor’s degree.

Private EducationCalifornia has many private colleges and universities, including many religious and special purpose institutions. “Private” means that the university or college does not normally receive federal and state funding; the institution is primarily funded by student tuition.

accreditationAccreditation is a certification of the academic quality of an institution of higher learning. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is responsible for the accreditation of public and private universities and colleges in California, including the University of California.

What is the difference between a “University” and a “College”?

In the U.S.A., the terms “university” and “college” generally mean the same thing and are often used interchangeably, but are different. Universities are often larger than colleges, and universities normally contain multiple “colleges” or “schools.” UCR contains three colleges and two schools: the Bourns College of Engineering; the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences; the School of Business Administration; and the Graduate School of Education.

What is the difference between a “College” and a “Community College”?

In the United States, a college can offer full degree programs. Community colleges offer two-year Associate’s degrees and can provide the first two years of a four-year degree program. A California Community College cannot grant four-year Bachelor’s degrees.

UCR Admission Preparation Program (UCR-APP)

Many top international high school graduates meet the high school course requirements and the GPA (3.4 out of 4) for direct admission to UCR; however, international students may not have written the SAT/ACT and/or do not have the required TOEFL/IELTS score.

The UCR-APP program is a nine-month academic preparation program that runs from September to June, for international students that have met the A-G and GPA requirements but not the SAT/ACT and/or TOEFL/IELTS requirements.

This bridging program combines advanced English instruction, SAT & TOEFL preparation courses, and academic skills training with UCR credit classes, which are transferable toward a UCR undergraduate degree program. The APP program enables international students to complete the SAT and/or TOEFL test after the traditional UCR application date. Upon successful completion of the nine-month APP program -- including campus courses, test scores and UCR application requirements -- students will have the opportunity to enter a UCR undergraduate program. UCR-APP focuses on instruction in university study skills, including academic reading, writing and research plus critical thinking. Highly experienced instructors prepare students for the challenges of academic work and life on an American campus.

Choosing Your Undergraduate MajorAs part of the UCR-APP application process, students will be asked to identify their intended major of study. During the UCR-APP program, students will work with an advisor to select the appropriate courses for transfer into their UCR major.

ScholarshipsTop academic students who are accepted into the UCR-APP program may be eligible for APP entrance scholarships, depending on the student’s GPA.

UCR International Transfer Track Program (UCR-ITT) Transferring to UCR from Another University (2+2)

The UCR International Transfer Track program (UCR-ITT) is a cooperative program between UCR and select California community colleges. High school graduates who have not met the academic or language requirements for direct entry to UCR or the UCR-APP program, can strengthen their language and academic skills through the ITT program-- another pathway to help students graduate from UCR with a Bachelor’s degree.

English and Academic PreparationBy enrolling in the UCR-ITT program, students begin studies in UCR’s Intensive English Program (INT), where they will strengthen their English language skills in order to prepare for academic study in the U.S.A. Students are admitted into the UCR-ITT program at any language level, from beginner to advanced. Upon arrival at UCR, students will be tested and placed at the appropriate language level. When the student’s language skills reach an advanced level, the student will be recommended to the INT’s advanced level class, level 600. Upon successful completion, the student will gain admission to a California partner community college.

Community College ExperienceCalifornia community colleges are highly regarded and provide students with smaller class sizes and individual attention. The majority of California high school graduates go to community college before they go to a UC. Community colleges prepare students for transfer to four-year universities. The community colleges also offer opportunities for personal enrichment and learning at an affordable price.

Graduate from UCRUCR’s Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program allows eligible students who are studying at a California Community College to have a guarantee of admission to UCR. Undergraduate Admissions representatives make regular visits to our partner community colleges to advise students regarding appropriate courses to take in order to ensure successful transfer to a UCR Undergraduate Program through TAG. Neither TOEFL nor SAT tests are required to transfer to UCR through this program. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 while attending a community college to be eligible for TAG.

Upon successful completion of the UCR TAG requirements at the community college, the student’s pathway is now clear to complete their course requirements at UCR and proudly graduate with a UCR Bachelor’s degree.

Conditional Admission to a California Community College

Students who have taken one or more university-level courses in their home country or in the United States, must apply as a transfer student. Normally, students transfer a block of two years (60 transferable semester credits) to complete the final two years of credit at UCR.

Admission Requirements Students are eligible to transfer with a minimum GPA of 2.8 (75%) and must complete the following, with a grade C (70%) or better in each of the courses:• Two transferable courses in English composition • One transferable course in mathematical

Some UCR majors require a GPA that is higher than the published admission requirements.

University Credit Program (UCP) for Visiting Students

Undergraduate and graduate level students from outside the U.S.A. who are looking for the opportunity to study abroad at the University of California, Riverside, can enroll at UCR as a visiting student through UCR Extension’s University Credit Program (UCP). UCP provides the opportunity to experience undergraduate, graduate and Extension credit courses, without having to formally apply to UCR. The UCP program is designed for university students who have demonstrated advanced understanding of English and who are academically strong.

Course OptionsStudents can choose from a range of credit classes across disciplines; however, fully admitted UCR undergraduate and graduate students have registration priority. UCP students must meet all prerequisites.

Undergraduate and Graduate Level CoursesUCP students have access to courses in over 80 undergraduate and 50 graduate programs. UCR is one of only three UC campuses with an undergraduate program in Business. However, availability is limited in all academic areas, and students should not expect to get into their first choice of classes*. We recommend students choose between 10 and 15 courses in which they are interested, and have been approved by their home institution. Our College Counseling Office works with each student to ensure a full course load of 12 units.* Some courses, such as the MBA program, are restricted and/

or require additional professional fees.

Extension ClassesIn addition to daytime credit classes, UCP students also have access to a wide range of Extension classes that are normally offered in the late afternoon and evenings. Many Extension courses carry credit and every Extension course has been approved by the UCR Academic Senate Committee on courses. Extension courses give students the opportunity to study with professionals from the community, and make excellent business connections. Extension courses are taught by working professionals in the top of their fields. Many Extension courses can be combined to complete a UCR professional certificate or diploma. What is Extension?UCR Extension is the continuing education and professional studies department of the University of California, Riverside. It offers non-degree, professional courses and Certificate Programs.

Many Extension courses carry UCR credit and like all UCR courses, classes are rigorous. Courses provide great opportunities to network with other professionals.

UCR Academic Summer SessionsUndergraduate and graduate courses offered during the summer sessions (June through September) are available to qualified international visiting students; however, they are not considered part of the UCP program. Summer quarter classes follow a separate date and fee structure, which is announced each February. UCP students who wish to enroll in campus classes may do so at an additional fee.

The summer quarter is divided into two 5-week sessions. Students can take a maximum of 2 courses during each 5-week session. Students have the same priority as UCR students for summer session courses, which is on a first-come-first-served basis. Students enrolled in UCP during the summer quarter still have full access to Extension credit courses. Certificate and Diploma ProgramsAcademic-year Certificate Programs (AYCP)

are designed for high school graduates and business professionals, and include nine months of full-time study in a late afternoon and evening format in a wide variety of professional areas, leading to a UC Riverside Extension Certificate (pages 28 and 29).

Postgraduate Certificate and Diplomas in Management, Hospitality, Engineering or Biotechnology

are postgraduate-level programs that offer comprehensive postgraduate-level study that prepare students to work anywhere in the world and include an opportunity for an unpaid internship, as well as one year of Optional Practical Training in the U.S. (pages 30-33).

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Certificate Programs (TESOL)

are comprehensive teacher development programs that allow current teachers or prospective teachers planning to teach abroad to learn the most up-to-date North American teaching trends and methods and earn an internationally recognized teaching certificate (pages 34-36).

Optional Practical Training (OPT)Students who study a minimum of one full-time academic year (9 months) at UC Riverside in a professional or postgraduate program leading to a Certificate or Diploma, may apply for permission to work for up to 12 months in their field of study. This allows students an opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom to practical work experience off campus. This work experience is called Optional Practical Training (OPT).

The International Education Programs will assist students with their OPT application; however, students are responsible for finding their own job opportunity.

Admission RequirementsCertificate and Diploma Programs require an advanced level of English (see individual program description for language requirements). Students who provide an official TOEFL score or equivalent will receive direct entry to the program. All new students, regardless of their test score, will be required to take an assessment test to help us understand your needs and provide you with support during your studies. UCR’s Postgraduate Diploma programs offer comprehensive postgraduate-level study that prepares students to work in their field in a management capacity anywhere in the world and include a required internship in a U.S. company as part of the program. Our postgraduate diplomas may also offer qualified students the opportunity for advanced Master’s study at select universities in the U.S. Students who successfully complete a UCR postgraduate program are eligible for one year of paid optional practical training in the United States.

The nine-month program is divided in three quarters:

First Quarter – Fundamentals of Management

The first quarter of study consists of the Fundamentals of Management (PGCM). See page 30.

Second Quarter – Choose your Concentration

In the second quarter of study, students will identify their concentration – Management, Hospitality Engineering or Biotechnology. To identify concentration is to study courses within the field of interest. All students will begin their preparation to undertake their third quarter internship with a required course called Marketing You.

MBA course optionsStudents intending to further their study in the US or abroad, or who may not qualify for direct entry into an MBA program, may be eligible to take up to two UCR MBA courses as part of their second quarter study (management concentration only). UCR MBA courses carry full graduate level credit and are transferrable to the UCR MBA program and other MBA programs in the US. UCR MBA courses have an additional charge of $500 per course.

Third Quarter of Study – InternshipStudents who successfully complete the course requirements are eligible for an internship in the final quarter in an industry related to their field or diploma. Internships are supervised professional positions which give students the opportunity to be part of an American company and have real world experience in their field.

During the third quarter internship, students are enrolled in a course called Understanding the American Workplace, which supports your internship in an academic context by helping you understand and analyze your work experience.

Internships are unpaid positions lasting for 12 weeks. Our internships are normally in mid-sized companies in the Inland Empire and LA County areas. However, students may undertake an internship outside the LA County region or in another state, with approval. Our internship coordinator will work with you to help you locate a position that meets your career needs. You will be assisted to prepare a resume and train for a successful interview.

28-Unit TESOL Advanced CertificateThe TESOL Advanced Certificate Program is a one-year teacher training program that provides a foundation of required courses, including a historical overview of foreign language teaching methods, grammar, linguistics, and language acquisition. Moving through the program, the participant selects methods courses from reading, writing, listening, conversation, pronunciation, and vocabulary, firmly grounding them in theory, practical techniques and activities, while providing hands-on experience. In the final segment of the program, the participant applies and integrates what has been learned by teaching ten weeks of ESL classes under the guidance of a senior TESOL faculty member. The program is designed to be completed in four 10-week quarters. Students must demonstrate written and spoken proficiency in English before being admitted to the program and to graduate.

15-Unit TESOL Certificate The 15-unit TESOL Certificate Program is a 6 month teacher training program designed for experienced teachers wanting to improve and master English teaching skills for use in their home country. The program provides a foundation of required courses, including a historical overview of foreign language teaching methods, grammar, linguistics, and language acquisition. Moving through the program, the participant selects methods courses from reading, writing, listening, conversation, pronunciation, and vocabulary, firmly grounding them in theory, practical techniques and activities, while providing hands-on experience. Riverside is the BEST location in Southern California to visit famous attractions. We are centrally located and you can get to most places in less than two hours. Outdoor activities are the way of life here and you can enjoy many beautiful beaches and parks. You can hike, bike, swim, surf, boogie board and skate – you can even ski and snowboard in the winter, with the mountains only an hour away. Imagine skiing in the morning and sun tanning in the afternoon. Southern California is one of the few places in the world where you can do it all.

The Office of Social and Cultural Activities plans many events each quarter that are open to all our students. Several parties are organized that celebrate different cultures and U.S. holidays.

Open year-round and conveniently located in the UCR Extension Center, the ERC is the most cost-effective short-term dormitory option, offering single- (limited) or double-occupancy rooms. All rooms are furnished and air-conditioned, with private bathroom, wireless Internet, telephone (free, unlimited local calls), and television. Breakfast is included in the fee; for other meals, a meal plan may be purchased separately. Bed linens and towels are provided and laundry facilities are located within the building. Recommended for short stays (up to 3 weeks/21 nights).

Open year-round and located within walking distance from UCR Extension Center (three minutes), IV offers single- and double-occupancy apartments with kitchen facilities and living rooms. Homestay is the best opportunity for students to experience American life and customs and to improve their English. It is also the most economical housing option. Students who choose homestay live with an American family. All rooms are furnished, double-occupancy. All meals are provided. The family also provides transportation to and from school daily and school related activities. Homestay is required for all students under 18 years old.

Other OptionsSeveral private, off-campus apartment buildings are also located within one block of University Extension. At UC Riverside, students are very important to us. The IEP program staff members are selected for their dedication to students. Many of our staff are our former students. We offer a full range of student services to support your stay in America. Assistance is available in over 10 languages.

Immigration AssistanceWhether you want to transfer to or from another school, extend your stay, leave the country for a vacation, or apply for practical training, we will assist you throughout the process.

University and College CounselingIf you want to continue your studies at an American university or college, we will help you find a school that meets your needs and qualifications and assist you with the application process. You should bring official English translations of transcripts showing all high school and university work completed.

Letter of Conditional AdmissionConditional acceptance to certain colleges and universities for undergraduate or graduate studies is possible for qualified applicants before they come to the U.S. Students who have met all the academic requirements may be admitted subject to successful completion of their English language study at the University of California, Riverside.

Airport TransferWe provide transportation between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) or Ontario International Airport (ONT) and University of California, Riverside. The current one-way fees are $100 (LAX), and $50 (ONT). (Fees include door-to-door service and check-in assistance). If reserved within fewer than 10 days in advance, add $20.

TOEFL and TOEIC ExamsThe Institutional TOEFL and the TOEIC exams are offered at the UCR Extension Center twice every 10-week session. Students interested in taking the new Internet-based TOEFL test can get assistance to make a reservation at an authorized testing site from the College Counseling Office.

Note: UCR accepts the institutional TOEFL taken at IEP for application to UCR undergraduate and graduate programs.

Additional Student Services General Information

VisasStudents accepted for study in any program with 18 hours of instruction per week or more need an I-20 form (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status), so that they may obtain a student visa (F-1) at the nearest United States Consulate.

With the exception of Conversation and Culture or any Custom Designed Program which allow for F-2 or B-1/B-2 visas, all of our academic programs are full-time study curriculums and require F-1 visas.

Medical InsuranceAll students are required to purchase health and accident insurance through IEP. Our insurance provides coverage of $1,000,000 per accident or illness, and costs $40 per week.

Application DeadlinesEnglish Language Programs: Applications are accepted until the program is full.

Professional and Postgraduate Programs: The deadline for application is normally 45 days before the starting date of the program or individual module.

It can take several weeks to receive an I-20, so please send your application early. We recommend you send application materials at least 60 days prior to the start of the program.

Tuition PaymentAll program fees must be paid on or before Registration Day. Fees can be paid with cashier’s check/money order, or/travelers’ checks made payable to “UC Regents,” cash, or credit card (VISA or MasterCard.)

Refund Policy

Refund Policy for Tuition FeesFull tuition can only be refunded upon receipt of the following BEFORE classes begin:

• a written request for withdrawal from the program and

• the original I-20 issued by University of California, Riverside Extension, if applicable.

Refund requests received on the first day of the program after the first class has started will be entitled to a 50 percent refund of the program’s tuition.

No refunds will be granted AFTER the first day of classes in any program.

Classes may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. In this case, all fees are refundable.

Refund requests take six to eight weeks to be processed. Program application fees and housing placement fees are non-refundable.

There is a 10% processing fee for each refund request, regardless of the amount.

Refund and Cancellation Policy for IV FeesFor contracts with less than 9 months: 50% of the remaining contract term will be deducted from the refund.

For contracts of 9 months or more: change fee to daily rate plus a one month charge at the monthly rate.

For IV, an additional $75 administrative fee applies.

Balances of less than $100 will not be refunded.
