No candidate shall be admitted i to this examination unless he have passed Part 1. of the Preliminary Scientific examination at least two years pre- s viously and Part II. at least one year previously. Internal : students must have completed the second and third years’ j course of study prescribed for them by the University and external students must produce certificates of having subsequently to having passed Part I. of the Preliminary Scientific examination been a student during two years at one or more of the medical institutions or schools recognised by this University and of having attended (1) a course of not less than 100 lectures on Anatomy ; (2) a course of Dissections for not less than 12 months; (3) a. course of not less than 60 lectures on Physiology; (4) courses of Experimental Physiology, His- tology, and Physiological Chemistry for not less than three months each; (5) lectures and demonstrations on Pharma- cology, Pharmacy, and Materia Medica for not less than three months ; and (6) Practical Pharmacy for not less than two months. These certificates (as is the case also with all the certificates hereinafter mentioned) must be transmitted to the Registrar at least four weeks before the commencement of the examination. Fee for this examination &pound;1 f) examination &pound;10. M.B., B.S. Examination.-The M.B., B.S. examination takes place twice in each year, commencing on the last Monday in October and on the first Monday in May. No candidate will be admitted to this examination within two academic years from the date of passing the Intermediate examination. The M.B., B.S. examination under the regulations now described was held for the first time in October, 1904. Bachelors of Medicine of this Univer- sity who graduated in or before May, 1904, may obtain the B.S. degree by passing the Surgical part of the M.B., B.S. examination. Every candidate must produce certificates of having passed the intermediate examination and of having subsequently attended courses of instruction in (1) Principles and Practice of Medicine ; (2) Clinical Methods and Physical Diagnosis; (3) Insanity; (4) Therapeu- tics ; (5) Vaccination ; (6) Principles and Practice of Surgery ; (7) Operative Surgery, Surgical Anatomy, Practical Surgery, and the Administration of Anaesthetics; (8) Diseases of the Eye, Ear, and Throat ; (9) Midwifery and Diseases of Women; (10) Practical Midwifery, the conduct of at least 20 Labours, and practice as a Clinical clerk in Gynsecolegical work; (11) Pathology and Bacteriology ; (12) work of the Post-mortem room ; (13) Forensic Medicine ; and (14) Hygiene. He must also have attended the Medical and Surgical practice of a recognised hospital for two years and a fever hospital for two months. For internal students the above form the subjects of the fourth and fifth years of study as prescribed by the University. Candi- dates as external students in medicine must have been engaged in professional study during five years subsequent to matriculation and four years subsequent to passing the Preliminary Scientific Examination Part I. at one or more of the schools recognised by the University for the purpose. Candidates will be examined in Medicine (including Therapeutics and Mental Diseases), Pathology, Forensic Medicine and Hygiene, Surgery, Midwifery. and Diseases of Women. The subjects may be divided into two groups-namely: (1) Medicine, Pathology. Forensic Medicine, and Hygiene ; and (2) Surgery Midwifery, and Diseases of Women. These groups ma be taken either separately or together. The fee is ;E1( for each entry to the whole examination and &pound;5 fo: examination or re-examination in either group. There will no separate examination held for Honours but the list :)f candidates who have passed will be published in two parts-namely, an Honours list and a Pass list. Doctor of Medicine.-The examination for this degree takes place twice in each year, commencing on the first Monday in December and on the first Monday in July. Candidates must have taken the degrees of M.B., B.S. not less than two years previously but for those who have taken the M.B., B.S. degrees with Honours or have done -certain original work this period of delay may be reduced to one year. They may present themselves for examination in one of the following branches, namely : (1) Medicine ; (2) Pathology ; (3) Mental Diseases ; (4) Midwifery and Diseases of Women ; and (5) State Medicine. Certain conditions have to be fulfilled in each case, varying according to the nature of the branch in question. Any candidate for the degree of M.D. may transmit to the Registrar, not less than two months before the commencement of the examination, a thesis or published work having definite relation to some special department of Medical Science ; and if the thesis be approved by the examiners the candidate may be exempted from the written examination. The fee is &pound;20. Master in Surgery.-The examination for the degree of Master in Surgery takes place twice in each year and com- mences on the first Monday in December and on the first Monday in July. Candidates must produce certificates of having taken the degrees of M.B. and B.S. not less than two years previously and of having subsequently held for at least six months a resident or non-resident Surgical hospital appointment. The examination is conducted by means of printed papers and vivd-voce interrogation, and the subjects are Surgery, Surgical Pathology and Anatomy, a Clinical examination, and operations on the dead body. Any can- didate for the degree of M.S. may transmit to the Registrar, not later than two months before the commence- ment of the examination, a thesis or published work having definite relation to Surgery, and if the thesis be approved by the examiners the candidate may be exempted from the written examination in Surgery. The fee is ,E20. UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM. One Diploma and six degrees are conferred-viz., the Diploma in Public Health and the degrees of Bachelor in Medicine, Bachelor in Surgery, Master in Surgery, Doctor in Medicine, Bachelor in Hygiene, and Doctor in Hygiene. These degrees are open both to Men and Women. For the degree of Bachelor in l6fedicine (M.B.) there are four professional examinations. The subjects of the First Examination are-Elementary Anatomy and Elementary Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The subjects of the Second Examination are-Anatomy, Physiology, Materia Medica, Therapeutics, Pharmacology, Pharmacy. The subjects for the Third Examination are-Pathology, Medical Jurisprudence, Public Health, and Elementary Bacteriology. The subjects of the Fourth Examination are-Medicine, Clinical Medicine and Psychological Medicine, Surgery and Clinical Surgery, Midwifery and Diseases of Women and Children. N.B.-It is required that at least one of the five years of professional education shall be spent in attendance at the University College of Medicine, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Candidates who have passed the First and Second Examina- tions of the University will be exempt from First and Second Examinations of the Conjoint Board. For the degree of Bachelor in Surgery (B.S.) every can- . didate must have passed the examination for the degree of Bachelor in Medicine of the University of Durham and must j have attended one course of lectures on Operative Surgery and one course on Regional Anatomy. M.B., B.S. Examination.-The M.B., B.S. examinationtakes place twice in each year, commencing on the lastMonday in October and on the first Monday in May. Nocandidate will be admitted to this examination within twoacademic years from the date of passing the Intermediateexamination. The M.B., B.S. examination under the

UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM.

One Diploma and six degrees are conferred-viz., theDiploma in Public Health and the degrees of Bachelor

in Medicine, Bachelor in Surgery, Master in Surgery,Doctor in Medicine, Bachelor in Hygiene, and Doctorin Hygiene. These degrees are open both to Men andWomen.For the degree of Bachelor in l6fedicine (M.B.) there are

four professional examinations. The subjects of the FirstExamination are-Elementary Anatomy and ElementaryBiology, Chemistry, and Physics. The subjects of theSecond Examination are-Anatomy, Physiology, MateriaMedica, Therapeutics, Pharmacology, Pharmacy. The

subjects for the Third Examination are-Pathology, MedicalJurisprudence, Public Health, and Elementary Bacteriology.The subjects of the Fourth Examination are-Medicine,Clinical Medicine and Psychological Medicine, Surgery andClinical Surgery, Midwifery and Diseases of Women andChildren.N.B.-It is required that at least one of the five years

of professional education shall be spent in attendance atthe University College of Medicine, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.Candidates who have passed the First and Second Examina-tions of the University will be exempt from First and SecondExaminations of the Conjoint Board.

Each candidate must present an essay preparedentirely by himself, which must be typewritten, based onoriginal research or observation, on some medical subjectselected by himself, and approved of by the Professor ofMedicine and must pass an examination thereon, and mustbe prepared to answer questions on the other subjects ofhis curriculum so far as they are related to the subject ofthe essay.Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) (without residence).-The

University of Durham has instituted a special examina-tion whereby the degree of Doctor of Medicine may beobtained without residence. Candidates shall not be under40 years of age and shall have been in active practice for15 years as registered medical practitioners. They shallproduce certificates of moral character from three registeredmembers of the medical profession, and if they have notpassed an examination in Arts previously to the ProfessionalExamination in virtue of which they have been placed on theRegister, they shall be required to pass in Classics andMathematics. Candidates who have passed an examinationin Arts previously to being placed on the Register arerequired to pass an examination in Latin. They will beexamined in the Principles and Practice of Medicine,including Psychological Medicine, Hygiene, and Thera-

peutics, the Principles and Practice of Surgery, Midwifery,and Diseases of Women and Children, Pathology (Medicaland Surgical), Anatomy (Medical and Surgical), MedicalJurisprudence, and Toxicology. The fee will be 50guineas, of which 20 guineas will be retained if thecandidate fails to satisfy the examiners.

Candidates for any of the above degrees must give at least28 days’ notice to Professor Howden, Secretary, College ofMedicine, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In the case of the M.D.(essay) examination candidates must send in their essayssix weeks before the date of the examination.

THE VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER.

Matriculation, which consists in signing the UniversityRegister, must precede entry upon any course of study.Those only can matriculate who are registered students ofthe University.Four degrees in Medicine and Surgery are conferred by the

University-viz., Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of

Surgery (M.B. and Ch.B.), Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), andMaster of Surgery (Ch.M.).

All candidates for degrees in Medicine and Surgery arerequired to pass an examination called the MatriculationExamination (Faculty of Medicine), or to have passed suchother examination as may be recognised by the Universityfor this purpose.l

1 The examinations at present recognised are:&mdash;1. Graduation inthis or some other university of the United Kingdom, provided thatLatin has formed part of one of the Degree Examinations. 2. LondonMatriculation. 3. Higher Certificate of the Oxford and CambridgeSchools Examination Board. (Certificates must show that the candi-date has satisfied the Examiners in Latin, Elementary and AdditionalMathematics, English or History, and in either Greek, French, orGerman. The Mechanical Division of Natural Philosophy will satisfythe requirements in Mechanics ) 4. Senior Oxford Locals (Honours).(Certificates must show that the candidate has satisfied the Examinersin Latin, Pure Mathematics, English Essay, English History, and in

1 ) Degrees of Bacltelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.-i Before admission to the degree of M.B. or Ch.B. candi-3 dates are required to present certificates that they willi have attained the age of 21 years on the day of

i graduation and that they have pursued the courses of

1 study required by the University Regulations during a1 period of not less than five years subsequently to the, date of their registration by the General Medical Council,

two of such years having been passed in the University; and one year at least having been passed in the University, subsequently to the date of passing the First M.B. Examina.i tion. All candidates for the degrees of Bachelor of Medi.icine and Bachelor of Surgery are required to satisfy the

examiners in the several subjects of the following examina-tions : the First Examination, the Second Examination, and! the Final Examination.

The First Examination.-The subjects of examinationare as follows :-(1) Chemistry ; and (2) Elementary Biology.Candidates must have attended during at least one yearcourses both of lectures and of laboratory work in eachof the above-named subjects. The Examination is dividedinto two parts: Part 1. Physics and Chemistry ; Part 2,Biology; and the candidates may pass in these partsseparately.

The Second -Examination.-The subjects of examinationare as follows :&mdash;A : (1) Anatomy ; (2) Physiology, includingPhysiological Chemistry and Histology ; B : (3) MateriaMedica and Pharmacy. Candidates may pass in A and Bseparately.

The Final Examination.-The subjects of examinationare as follows :-(1) Pharmacology and Therapeutics. (2)General Pathology and Morbid Anatomy. (3) ForensicMedicine and Toxicology and Public Health. (4) Obstetricsand Diseases of Women. (5) Surgery, Systematic, Clinical,and Practical. (6) Medicine, Systematic and Clinical,including Mental Diseases and Diseases of Children.Candidates may either present themselves in all the six

subjects of examination on the same occasion or may passthe examination in two parts, the first part consisting oftwo or tkree of the subjects (1), (2), and (3), the second partof the remaining subjects.Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in the first

part must either present themselves again in the subjects asselected or in all the three subjects of the first part or in allthe six subjects of examination.

Candidates for the first part of the examination must havecompleted the fourth 7vinter of medical study.Candidates for the second part of the examination, or for

the whole examination, must have completed the fifth yearof medical study.

-Degree of Doctor of Medicine.-Candidates are not eligiblefor the degree of Doctor of Medicine unless they have

previously received the degrees of Bachelor of Medicineand Bachelor of Surgery and at least one year has elapsedsince they passed the examination for those degrees.Candidates for the degree of Doctor of Medicine are

required to present a printed dissertation embodying theresults of personal observations or original research, eitherin some department of medicine or of some science directly

relative to medicine. No candidate will be admitted to the

degree unless his dissertation shall have been recommendedby the Faculty of Medicine to the Council for accept-ance. Candidates may be examined on any subject con-nected with their dissertations.

Degree of itlaster of Surgery.-Candidates are not eligiblefor the degree of Master of Surgery unless they have pre-viously received the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine andBachelor of Surgery and at least one year has elapsed sincethey passed the examination for those degrees. The subjectsof examination are as follows: (1) Surgical Anatomy :(2) Surgery; (3) Operative Surgery ; (4) Clinical Surgery;(5) Ophthalmology and (6) Pathology and Bacteriology.Communications should be addressed to the Registrar,

either Greek, French, German, or Spanish. Applied Mathematics(Section D) or Mechanics and. Hydrostatics (Section E) will satisfy therequirements in Mechanics ) 5. Senior Cambridge Locals (Honours)(Certificates must show that the candidate has satisfied the Examinersin Latin, Euclid, and Algebra, English Composition, and EnglishHistory, and in either Greek, French, German, or Spanish. AppliedMathematics (Section H) or Statics, Dynamics, and Hydrostatics(Section K) will satisfy the requirements in Mechanics.) Provided thatthe subjects included in each of the above examinations shall includeall the subjects required by the General Medical Council. The Facultyof Medicine has discretionary power to accept other examinations of atleast equal standard.
