Welcome to the University of Greenwich, Medway Campus, located in the county of Kent. This splendid Edwardian redbrick and ivy-clad campus dates from 1903 when it was used as a naval base. In its present-day reincarnation it is home to the university’s Faculty of Engineering & Science, and selected programmes from the Faculty of Education & Health.

The Medway Campus has benefited from £50 million in investment that has seen the construction of extensive new laboratories and research facilities. The University of Greenwich shares the Medway Campus with Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Kent; known collectively as the Universities at Medway.

Our community of students range from undergraduate, including Foundation, through to taught Masters and PhDs. Greenwich’s strong international reputation attracts students from around the world and we currently have students from more than 170 countries studying at Greenwich. We also have many industry sponsored students,

including part time and degree apprenticeship students. In total we have approximately 4,000 students at Medway, including more than 250 postgraduate research students plus 500 students studying on a part-time basis and collectively, between the three universities at the Medway Campus, there are more than 10,000 students.

Our ethos is one of inclusion, we value each and every one of our students and do our upmost to support each student from the very start of their journey. We know through our close relationships with employers that they are looking for well-rounded individuals, so your time with us will be a mixture of gaining knowledge in your chosen fi eld plus encouragement to partake in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

Student achievementsMany of our students, from all areas of study, have received valuable recognition for their achievements. Nurturing genius and encouraging talent is characteristic of our approach to learning, and here at the University of Greenwich our teaching standards and state-of- the-art facilities have produced multiple success stories.

Students within the Faculty of Engineering and Science have a Retention and Success Offi cer (RSO) whose role is to provide an additional layer of support for student engagement.

The University wide STAART (AccessAbility Retention and Transition) programme encourages and supports students with a disability, providing support for disabled students.

Working with industryWe have strong links with local, national and international employers and enjoy the support of subject-related industrial boards. These enable us to constantly revise our programmes to refl ect the changing needs of industry. We have a number of degree apprenticeship programmes in place and further planned as the new standards are developed. Many of our programmes are accredited and recognised by relevant professional bodies, which can increase your opportunities for notable career progression. You can also get a head start on your chosen career path through securing a work placement to develop your employability skills. Previous opportunities have included roles with Ford Motor, EDF Energy, Cummins Power Generation, Pfi zer, the NHS (National Health Service). UN, wildlife and conservation organisations and non- governmental organisations (NGOS).

Studying Engineering at the University of Greenwich has helped me understand product design, thermodynamics, material engineering, and mechanical dynamics. In terms of engineering they are one of the leaders in the country. Connor FelsteadMechanical Engineering.

Support while you studyWhether you are a resident student or commuter, mature student or straight out of Sixth Form or FE college, you can feel secure in knowing we have your best interests in mind and offer a wide range of pastoral support to make your learning experience both enjoyable and fruitful. Our on-campus Student

Centre provides a wealth of advisory services, from accommodation and fi nance, to employability and much more. Help and advice from the Employability & Careers Service continues after graduation, to ensure the path to achieving your goals is all the more smoother.

The lecturers at the University of Greenwich are amazing! They are all personable and approachable and become like your friends, not just academic peers. There’s such a great support network here.Yan Li, Paramedic Science.

I find it really exciting being taught by someone who has just come back from a farming community in Malawi or presenting at an international conference and is giving us the latest knowledge on how our subject is being applied in the world. It is really hands-on from the start, with regular field trips, laboratory work and data analysis.Katie James, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Institute.

ResearchThe University of Greenwich at Medway is home to an extensive and vibrant research community, with world-leading researchers and over 250 PhD students, who are making a difference locally, nationally and internationally. Our portfolio includes designing and building the world of tomorrow, ensuring global food security through the work of the Natural Resources Institute, and delivering scientifi c innovations in areas as diverse as forensics and bulk solids handling. The excellence of our work has been recognised through the award of a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education.

Over 90% of all our academics have a PhD, 65% of whom also have their PGCert Higher Education teaching qualifi cation. We are committ ed to growing these percentages annually and we now recruit only PhD academic staff.

The majority of our team are research active, with over 100 staff in the faculty being eligible for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and 12 Professors in the science fi eld. Their latest research feeds into fi nal year and Masters level teaching. We are proud of the growing number of Fellowships and Senior Fellowships of Higher Education Academy – this demonstrates both personal academic and institutional commitment to professionalism in learning and teaching in higher education.

The vast majority of programmes are also supplemented by external industrial experts who come to give guest lectures and presentations on the latest developments in industry.

Our PhD students offer support to the academics in the laboratories, this approach is very popular with our students.

Excellent facilitiesHere at the University of Greenwich we like to learn by doing, which is why we offer our students the opportunity to gain hands on experience alongside our competitive teaching standards. We invest heavily in our facilities; we have over 8000m2 of lab space and offer our students the opportunity to fully utilise some of the most sophisticated instrumentation and analytical facilities in the UK.

The labs are well equipped. The library is very impressive as well. In addition to this, the university keeps upgrading its facilities every year, which makes the student experience better.Mayuri Dhunnoo, Biosciences.

Student lifeOn-campus The Medway Campus is home to a range of facilities including cafés, a gym and a new Student Hub which opened in January 2017. This transformation of the former Victorian swimming pool is a joint development between the University of Greenwich and University of Kent houses the students’ union, as well as providing a social and event space for all students on the campus. The Medway Campus is also home to the award winning Drill Hall Library, thought to be the longest library in Europe, with 2.7 miles of shelving storing more than 130,000 books, CDs, DVDs and journals, 400 computers, and a café, in addition to free Wi-Fi across the campus. The study zones, separated into quiet, silent and group, make it much easier to get ahead with coursework and the extended opening hours around exam time give students access to vast resources when they need them most.

Out and aboutOur Medway Campus is situated in the vibrant and rapidly developing area of Chatham Maritime. It is only a few minutes’ walk to the lively marina where there is a multiplex cinema, a selection of restaurants and the Dockside shopping centre. It is also close to Fort Amherst, a heritage site with 300 years of military history and leisure att ractions. The neighbouring Medway towns have a number of att ractions that permits Kent to retain its non-offi cial title as ‘The Garden of England’. Nearby, Mote Park, a bus ride away in Maidstone, plays host to a variety of events including The Social Festival: featuring popular music acts from noon to night. Other att ractions include local clubs and bars, many of which offer student deals, making the 40 minute trip into London virtually unnecessary. The campus is also close to Rochester, which is home to the second oldest cathedral in England and the location for Medway students’ graduation ceremonies. To help with local travel, University of Greenwich students can obtain around 65% off the normal cost of a student ticket on Arriva buses that run throughout Medway, Kent and East Sussex.

I am proud of all the achievements I made, including becoming a student ambassador. Life at university was filled with memorable moments.Mary Elizabeth Hael, Biomedical Science.

Students’ union An essential part of student life is membership to a students’ union, run by students for students. Students based at the Medway Campus are supported by ‘Greenwich & Kent Students’ Unions Together’ (GKU). The students’ union support a wide range of clubs, societies and sports teams including a well-being society. They also provide independent student advice on academic, fi nancial and welfare issues, as well as opportunities for paid and voluntary work. The students’ unions operate cafés and bars, and organise a wide range of events from major functions including the Fresher’s Fair and club nights. The students’ union is a registered charity, therefore all profi ts get ploughed back into services for students, without a penny wasted.
