Establishment of the facility was aided by a generous gift of food processing equipment and laboratory hardware from the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The equipment became available when all federal research programs related to the fish processing industry were eliminated in late 1978. Inasmuch as the Laboratory has a substantial quantity of specialized pilot plant and laboratory equipment, as well as professional expertise, it can provide a unique R & D service to the fish processing and food industries, and to governments at any level, either through short-term arrangements or by extended contracts. In addition, the Laboratory's special facilities and on-going contracts with industry will offer excellent opportunities for graduate training and research. Shown in the photograph below (left to right) are: Dr. Robert Ackman, Dr. Tom Gill, President J. Clair Callaghan and Dr. E. Graham Bligh. Drs. Ackman and Gill are also former employees of the Halifax Fisheries Laboratory and are well-known for their respective expertise in fish oils and fish muscle proteins.
