MULHOUSE, FRANCESituated along the banks of the River Ill, Mulhouse is a vibrant city of 110,000 people. As the capital of the Upper Alsace region of France, it boasts a colorful history, which dates to the14th century when it joined the League of the Ten Imperial Cities of Alsace, founded by Rudolph of Hapsburg. Shortly, thereafter, it broke away from France and for nearly 300 years, it existed as a separate canton before reverting back to France in 1798.As a consequence, Mulhouse was not involved in the Hundred Years War and did not suffer as did other Alsatian towns. This is apparent today as one walks along the old town and gazes at the stately renaissance architecture that can be seen in many of the local buildings, especially the Town Hall. Mulhouse has twelve museums and an especially noteworthy Botanical Garden which will take your breath away. The city’s enviable proximity to the Swiss and German borders adds to its attraction as an international program site. Culture is everywhere you look. In religious buildings, on walls, oddly in spinning mills, and classically in museums. And, of course, in the streets. Don’t believe us? Take a trip to Mulhouse, there’s always something to see!Fancy a visit to the shops, some retail therapy or a bit of window-shopping? Then ready, get set, go for a shopping spree in the Rue du Sauvage. Or maybe elsewhere. Creative talents are waiting to be discovered in every corner of Mulhouse.
