About UK Sculpture In the past 20 years, nearly 200 BA, BFA and MFA graduates of the University of Kentucky sculpture program are now professionally practicing as artists and educators. Sculpture courses at UK present a unique approach to teaching technical research, materials and techniques within the field of sculpture. Art studio students with an emphasis in sculpture enjoy a rigorous program of study that prepares them professionally and artistically for careers in art or other fields; the program culminates with solo exhibitions.

Facilities:The School of Art and Visual Studies is about to have a new home, a renovated 1899 tobacco processing facility that will include spaces for both new and traditional technologies. The facility will feature six digital media labs, a fabrication lab, and spacious ceramics, print, sculpture, drawing and painting, and photography studios. The fabrication lab (FabLab) will combine computer modeling with form-shaping equipment including 3D printers and laser cutters. Students pursuing the BFA degree will have studio space in the building, working alongside graduate studio art majors.

The Metal Arts Building, adjacent to the School’s current home, offers modern equipment and spacious areas for metal fabrications (4,000 sq ft), casting (2,000 sq ft) and woodworking (2,000 sq ft). Our students are trained how to safely use equipment including welders, cutters, metal foundry, coal forge and other essential tools.

Get involved:S.C.R.A.P. (Sculpture Student Club) is a membership organization for students interested in various production media, with a special interest in metal arts. The organization organizes many events, such as annual Iron Pour and traveling foundry, which enable the students to purchase equipment, help fund trips, and bring in visiting artists.

outside the classroom:The BFA Sculpture Internship Program develops ours students’ skills in the operations and safety of a metal shop.

Our students also have the opportunity to study abroad with current programs in England and Poland.

Our juried Sculpture on Campus competition offers graduate and advanced undergraduate students the opportunity to have a large-scale sculpture installed on campus.

UK sculpture students visit local schools, art centers and museums through our Traveling Foundry which introduces students to the process of casting.
