Mizzou Quick-Hitters> Missouri looks for its third road win of the season on Saturday as it travels to Waco, Texas, to face the Baylor Bears ... The Tigers have split their last four games on the road, including an overtime win at Nebraska on Feb. 13.> In an odd twist, the Tigers are actually 2-0 in their last two plane trips ... The Tigers fl ew to Boulder and Lincoln (both wins) and bussed to Lawrence and Manhattan (two losses) in between those contests.> Texas natives Marshall Brown and Jason Horton are making their fi nal trips to the Lone Star State this weekend ... Brown hails from nearby Austin, while Horton is a Dallas native.> Horton needs just fi ve assists on Saturday to top the 400 mark for his career ... He’ll be just the fi fth Tiger in school history to accomplish that feat.> Brown needs just 29 points to reach the 900 career point mark for his tenure at MU.> Matt Lawrence is looking to make his 59th consecutive start for the Tigers on Saturday ... That’s the most consecutive starts for an MU player since Rickey Paulding made 86 consecutive from 2002-04.> Lawrence needs just two three-point makes on Saturday to move into eighth on Missouri’s career three-point fi eld goals list ... Lawrence has 151 career treys, just one behind Mark Atkins (1993-94), who had 152 in his two seasons with the Tigers.> Not to harp on tough games, but of the Top 35 teams in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll, Missouri has already played 10 games vs. those programs ... So far the Tigers are 4-6 in those games this year, including wins over Texas, Kansas State and Purdue, who are currently in the Top 25, as well as a win over a surging Maryland club.> Of the six losses, Missouri has had second-half leads in three of those games.> The Tigers have been close in nearly every game this season and have dropped nine

games by eight points or less, including two games to opponents currently ranked in the Top 20, Kansas and Michigan State.> Although Mizzou is doing a much better job protecting the ball of late, the Tigers continue to force turnovers at a high rate ... The Tigers have forced 487 turnovers (236 steals) in 28 games this season ... Last year, Mizzou led the Big 12 with 10.1 steals and 18.9 turnovers per game and are averaging 8.4 steals and 17.4 turnovers forced per game this year, including the 23 turnovers forced vs. 2007 NCAA Tournament qualifi ers Maryland and Arkansas.> Mizzou has done an excellent job converting off those miscues and are averaging 21.0 points per game off turnovers ... among the nation’s leaders, including an average of 6.5 turnovers in their last two games combined vs. Colorado and Oklahoma State.> Overall, the Tigers are forcing a turnover once every six possessions, which allows them to average 6.3 more shots per game than their opponents.> In addition to steals, a trademark of Mike Anderson-coached teams has been assist totals and the Tigers are recording assists on 60.0 percent of their buckets this season (476 assists on 805 FG’s).> Speaking of assists, the 2007-08 Tigers are closing in on the Top Five for single-season dimes ... Missouri has 476 assists already and needs just 72 assists to move into the Top Five, passing the 1982-83 squad.> Overall, Missouri’s 17.0 assists per game rank No. 20 nationally.> Missouri has fl ashed a balanced playing rotation, as eight Tigers are averaging at least 13.6 minutes per game and no player is averaging more than 28.7 minutes.> Missouri has topped double fi gures in three-point makes six times this year, including a season high 12 vs. Texas ... The Tigers also hit 11 three-pointer at Nebraska and vs. McNeese State and 10 three-pointer vs. Michigan State, Kansas State and Southern.> ESPN’s Pat Forde named Mizzou Arena the No. 1 “New School” college basketball arena in America ... Who can argue?, the place is loaded!

Tiger Tidbits (Individual Notes)> The Junk Yard Dog has had a major impact in just his fi rst season ... 11 Tigers Have Reached Double-FiguresHighlighting Mizzou’s scoring balance even more is the fact the Tigers have had an incredible 11 players reach double-fi gures this season ... While DeMarre Carroll’s 18 double-digit scoring games this season leads the club, the Tigers have gotten surprise scoring outputs from Vaidotas Volkus and Justin Safford of late to help the team reach that total ... Last season Missouri had 10 players record double-fi gure scoring games after having just seven accomplish the feat in 2005-06 and just eight in 2004-05.

With A Tiger Win ...> Missouri would push its Big 12 Conference record to 6-8 and improve to 16-13 on the year.> Missouri would earn its third road win of the year, with all three victories coming in Big 12 play.> Missouri would have its fi rst win in the state of Texas since winning 70-66 at Baylor on Feb. 21, 2004.> Overall, Anderson would improve to 123-66 in his six seasons as a head coach.> Missouri would earn its 16th win of the year, moving within two victories of last season’s 18-win mark.> The Tigers would move to 34-25 all-time under Anderson.

Graduating TigersOctober through March are typically the busy months throughout college basketball playing circles, but as head coach Mike Anderson pointed out, May could be the busiest month

of all for Missouri Basketball ... The Tigers anticipate having seven current or former student-athletes walk the stage this particular spring to receive their diplomas as seniors Marshall Brown, Darryl Butterfi eld, Kalen Grimes, Jason Horton and Vaidotas Volkus and juniors Michael Anderson, Jr., and DeMarre Carroll are scheduled to graduate from school this year.

Tiller The Thriller Stepping Up For MizzouJ.T. Tiller has become one of Missouri’s go-to players and over the last eight games, as the sophomore guard is averaging 10.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists ... Prior to his breakout efforts, Tiller averaged just 5.6 points and 1.7 rebounds in 15.9 minutes per game (fi rst 20 games), marking a sharp increase in playing time and productivity for the improving guard.> Tiller has reached double fi gures in fi ve of his last eight games, reaching career highs in back-to-back games against Nebraska (14 points, eight rebounds) and Kansas State (20 points).> Tiller later scored 13 points at No. 4 Kansas, marking the second consecutive season the Marietta, Ga., native reached double fi gures in Allen Fieldhouse.

These Sophs Aren’t SoftJ.T. Tiller and Keon Lawrence have fi lled some major shoes for the Tigers and are among the club’s leaders in scoring, assists and shooting percentage during this recent eight-game stretch.> Below is a comparison of the previous 20 games for both Tiller and Lawrence compared to the last seven games ... That seven-game stretch boasts games against a four Top 25 teams, including a game at No. 4 Kansas and the two meetings with Kansas State.

It’s Not About The StealWhen watching Missouri’s high-pressure style of play it’s easy to fall in love with the steal statistic, but really, Mike Anderson’s style of play isn’t about “the theft”, it’s more about “the act” ... The huge steal totals get the most publicity because it’s an NCAA recognized statistic, when in fact, “defl ections” and turnovers are more closely charted by the coaching staff.> It’s the defl ections that often lead to turnovers and possibly steals, but can also upset the opponent’s rhythm on offense and force them to regroup while the shot clock is winding down.> So far this season Missouri has 647 team defl ections, which have ultimately led to 487 turnovers forced, either via 236 steals, 10 35-second clock violations, nine forced fi ve-second calls, four 10-second violations, etc.> J.T. Tiller leads Mizzou with 98 defl ections this season, while DeMarre Carroll has added 81 from his forward position.

Tiller Named Big 12 co-Player of the WeekJ.T. Tiller earned league-wide praise for his efforts against Nebraska and Kansas State, as the sophomore earned Big 12 co-Player of the Week honors from the league offi ce ... Tiller averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists throughout the week, including a career high 20 points in the win over Kansas State ... Tiller scored Mizzou’s fi nal fi ve points, including both ends of a 1-and-1 with just :06 seconds left and the Tigers up just 75-74.> Tiller is the fi rst Tiger to earn a league award this year and is the fi rst Missouri sophomore to be named Player of the Week since Kareem Rush on Feb. 5, 2001, after a 27-point, 11-rebound effort against No. 3 Kansas.

Horton Hears A Pair Of Top 10sHe doesn’t play with a lot of “fl ash”, but Jason Horton has quietly put together a great career in a Tiger uniform and needs just two steals to join Anthony Peeler, Mike Sandbothe and Lynn Hardy as the only players in Mizzou history to fi nish among the top 10 in career assists and career steals ... Melvin Booker is also currently in the top 10 in both categories, but will fall out of the rankings in steals once Horton records six more thefts.> Anthony Peeler leads both categories with 497 assists and 196 steals, while Sandbothe ranks fi fth in steals (172) and sixth in assists (380) and Hardy ranks third in steals (194) and eighth in dimes (358).> Horton currently has 395 assists to rank No. 5 all-time, while his 146 career steals ranks just outside the top 10.

Paint It Black and GoldMissouri’s fast-paced style of play produces a number of transition buckets and as a result, Missouri is averaging 33.1 points per game in the paint this season ... Last year Mizzou averaged 30.7 points per game in the lane, but the addition of DeMarre Carroll and improved play of Leo Lyons has the Tigers making a much larger offensive dent in the lane this season.

Home Is Where The Wins AreAs Mizzou continues the Big 12 Conference portion of its fourth season at Mizzou Arena, the Tigers are starting to establish an impressive home court advantage in the state-of-the-art facility ... Since opening the building in 2004, Mizzou is 52-18 at home and has won 18 of its last 22 games on Norm Stewart court ... Included in that run was the Jan. 30 contest against Nebraska, when the Tigers nearly upended the Huskers with just eight available players (six scholarship).> An added fact about the Tigers at home includes their great play vs. Top 25 competition ... Since the building was opened, Missouri is 5-4 vs. ranked foes, including wins over No. 12 Texas and No. 22 Kansas State this season alone.> Overall, the Tigers have won 27 consecutive home games vs. non-conference opposition, which is the 11th longest non-conference home court winning streak in the nation.

Playing His Junior Season Like A LyonLeo Lyons has played some dynamic basketball at times during his junior season and ranks as the team-leader with fi ve 20-point games this season ... Lyons scored a career high 27 points vs. Oklahoma State to move into the team lead with fi ve 20-point outings, as he hit 12-of-13 shots en route to his career night ... The Kansas City native also led Mizzou to a 66-62 win at Colorado, with 22 points and seven rebounds, before dropping in 24 points vs. Texas A&M on 10-of-14 shooting.> Lyons has now reached double fi gures in 15 of his last 20 contests and his 12.6 points and 62.4 percent shooting percentage leads the team.> To put Lyons’ improved consistency in per-spective, the junior has reached double fi gures 17 times this season after reaching double fi g-ures nine times over his previous two seasons combined.

Mizzou’s Unrivaled Scheduling StrengthMissouri’s schedule strength has been well documented, but did you know, of all the teams in “high major” conferences, no program is playing more “high major” non-conference contests than the Missouri Tigers ... Clemson, Illinois, LSU, South Carolina and Wisconsin are each playing a total of six games vs. teams from the “high-major” leagues, while the second closest in the Big 12 is Kansas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State with fi ve “high-major” games.

Gonzaga and Memphis aren’t included in this because of conference affi liation ... However these two clubs count for teams as “high-major” programs played ... Incidentally, Gonzaga has eight games vs. “high-major” competition, while Memphis has seven, but don’t play in comparable conferences, keeping them off the above list.

J.Y.De (As in Junk Yard DeMarre)He plays the game with such passion and ferocity that just one season into his Tiger career DeMarre Carroll has earned the moniker J.Y.De. ... Carroll has ranked among Missouri’s leaders in both scoring and rebounding in nearly each game thus far and has reached double fi gures in scoring in 18-of-28 contests, including four double-doubles vs. Western Illinois and North Carolina A&T, Iowa State and Nebraska ... Carroll even led the team in assists with a season high fi ve dimes against Southern and in steals, with four against McNeese State and UMKC and three more vs. Coppin State and Nebraska.> Carroll made his Tiger debut by scoring a career high 23 points vs. Central Michigan on 10-of-12 shooting and narrowly missed a double-double with eight boards.> That opening night by the 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward turned into a career night, as he eclipsed the 22 points he poured in on Kentucky as a Vanderbilt sophomore on Feb. 11, 2006.> The Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, Carroll has reached 20 points three times this season, including a 22-point, 12-board double-double on Monday vs. North Carolina A&T and 10 more boards vs. a much larger Illinois squad on Dec. 22.> Recently Carroll was pressed into extended minutes (career high 38) vs. Nebraska and scored 15 points and grabbed 12 boards in a head-to-head match-up with Aleks Maric.

The Good Tigers Giveth ...Looking for two under-valued statistics that often translate into “W’s”?... look no further than assists and steals.> So far this season Missouri is averaging 17.0 assists per game (No. 22 nationally), led by the talented trio of guards: Keon Lawrence (2.5 apg) and Jason Horton (3.0 apg).> The Tigers are producing assists on 60.0 percent of their buckets this year and eight players have 20 assists or more this year.

... And Taketh AwayThe Tigers are also doing an outstanding job wreaking havoc on defense and have forced teams into an average of 17.4 miscues per night ... Mizzou forced both Arkansas and Maryland into 23 turnovers, while a senior-laden Fordham group (fi ve senior starters) turned the ball over 22 times.> With that high turnover total, Missouri is averaging 21.0 points per game off of turnovers

and lead their opponents 222-169 in fast break tallies.

The Pine Is Just FineMike Anderson says he has eight or nine starters and the numbers prove it ... In his fi rst year at Mizzou the club set a school record with 26.4 points per game coming from its reserves and 2007-08 appears to be no different.> So far this season the Tiger bench is aver-aging 25.6 points per game, including a sea-son high 44 points at Texas Tech, 43 vs. Texas A&M and nine other contest over 30 points.> Marshall Brown (fi ve times), Keon Law-rence (fi ve times), J.T. Tiller (three times) and Darryl Butterfi eld (twice) and Leo Lyons (six-times) have each reached double fi gures off the bench this season and as the Tigers are getting 32.9 percent of their scoring from reserves.

Now That Schedule Is Tiger ToughIt’s a schedule that would make Jeff Sagarin and Joe Lunardi scream “Uncle!”. Missouri’s 2007-08 schedule is loaded with great competition and that tough slate began with the opening rounds of the CBE Classic in Columbia.> From the season opener against Central Michigan to 13 games against teams ranked or receiving votes in the Associated Press’ Top 25 at the start of the year, Missouri’s schedule ranks among the nation’s toughest.> The Tigers faced seven opponents from BCS Conferences during non-league play, which would be the most in the regular-season since the 1985-86 campaign when the Tigers faced eight “BCS” squads.> In fact, Missouri faced a team from each BCS league except for the Big East ... Missouri had games vs. Mississippi State and Arkansas from the SEC, Michigan State, Purdue and Illinois from the Big Ten, California from the Pac-10 and Maryland from the ACC.> Mizzou faced fi ve programs that participated in the 2006-07 NCAA Tournament, including games against: Illinois, Arkansas, Purdue, Maryland and Michigan State ... In addition to those contests, the Tigers had a game at Mis-sissippi State, a team that advanced to Madi-son Square Garden for the semifi nals of the Postseason NIT last season.

Carroll Earning Preseason AwardsDeMarre Carroll continues to rack up the pre-season accolades ... A 6-foot-8, 225-pound transfer from Vanderbilt, Carroll was named the Big 12 Conference’s Preseason Newcom-er of the Year by the league coaches, while be-ing ranked among the nation’s top transfers by rivals.com, Street & Smith and Lindy’s College Basketball annuals.> The 6-foot-8, 225-pounder resumes his col-legiate playing career after sitting out the 2006-07 campaign as a transfer from Vandy ... A two-year performer for the Commodores, Car-roll averaged 10.9 points and 6.4 rebounds as a sophomore in 2005-06, playing in 29 games and making 15 starts.> The Birmingham, Ala., native played his best

In his second season at Tulsa, Anderson helped the Golden Hurricane to NCAA Tournament action, while in his second season at Arkansas, the Razorbacks rebounded from a 12-win campaign to go 19-14 and ad-vance to the second round of the NIT.

Family AffairMizzou Basketball is a family affair … Head Coach Mike Anderson has three relatives on this season’s squad … His son, Michael Anderson, Jr., is a junior for Missouri after transferring from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, while his nephew, DeMarre Carroll, is ready to open his Missouri career after redshirting the 2006-07 campaign following two stellar seasons at Vanderbilt … Another of Anderson’s nephews, T.J. Cleveland, is an assistant coach for the Tigers and spent his playing days under Anderson and Nolan Richardson at the University of Arkansas.> Another family connection not to be forgotten is that Associate Head Coach Melvin Watkins is the father of graduate assistant and former Tiger letterman Marcus Watkins.

    MIZZOU HEAD COACH MIKE ANDERSON

TUBBY SMITHHead Coach, University of Minnesota“Mike Anderson is a shining star. He is the total package. A man of high integrity, class, confi dence -- a winner! I have battled Mike Anderson teams over the years and I can tell you that his style of play will make the Big 12 coaches feel uneasy. I have so much respect for him and when the team, the University and the fans meet him - they will too. Congratulations to Missouri on a blockbuster hire!”

NOLAN RICHARDSONFormer Head Coach, University of Arkansas“Mike Anderson has been with me over 22 years as a player, assistant coach, and as-sistant head coach, and there’s no question that he was a delight all the time, for all of the years we were together. I always knew that he would have the right opportunity to build a program at a place like Missouri, and that he would be a plus for any program. In my esti-mation he is truly one of the fi nest young basketball coaches around at this point in time. Secondly, I would like to congratulate Missouri for giving him this opportunity, and I have no doubt in my mind he will be very successful. My heart feels very proud to know that a young man under my tutelage for so many years has this wonderful opportunity.”

CHARLES BARKLEY,NBA Hall of Famer, NBA on TNT Analyst“Missouri is very lucky and fortunate to have a coach of (Mike Anderson’s) talent and charisma. I want to congratulate Missouri for picking a fi ne coach and I wish them the best of luck.”

DICK VITALEESPN College Basketball Analyst“Mike Anderson will bring an up-tempo, fast-paced style that will be exciting for Missouri fans. He was a protégé of Nolan Richardson and his run-press style and had Arkansas fans in Hog Heaven when they won the national title in 1994. Anderson did a great job at UAB and he will bring run-press-shoot excitement to the Columbia campus!”

FRAN FRASCHILLAESPN Broadcast Analyst“Mike Anderson is a proven winner and he will win at Missouri with players who will buy into his ‘never say die’ style of play. He got out lot out of his fi rst Missouri team and made each individual player better. It’s safe to say that, in a program that has had such great tradition of success, the pride in Tiger basketball is returning under his leadership.”

    WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ...

Mike Anderson enters his second sea-son as Head Coach at the University of Missouri after guiding the Tigers to a surprising 18-12 mark a year ago, including an upper-division fi nish in the Big 12 Conference.

Known for his blue-collar demeanor, hard-working teams and the family-oriented atmosphere surrounding his program, Anderson has made an im-mediate impact at Mizzou, not only on the basketball fl oor, but within Co-lumbia and state-wide communities as well.

From his fi rst day at Mizzou, Anderson made it an emphasis to begin restor-ing the program’s relationship and perception across the state. In just a few months, he had already begun to accomplish that goal.

He made better than 119 public appear-ances in his fi rst full year in Columbia and is often spotted on campus meeting with students, eating lunch downtown with his staff and occasionally playing basketball at Missouri’s state-of-the-art student recreation center.

Anderson’s message to the Mizzou Nation and its followers has been: “This is your program.”

Looking to fi nd Anderson’s passion outside of Mizzou Arena? ... it’s his family. Introduced to the Mizzou Nation along with his wife Marcheita, Ander-son is the father of four children, Dar-cheita, Michael Jr., Yvonne and Suney. His eldest son, Michael, is a junior on this season’s squad, while his nephew, former Arkansas standout, T.J. Cleve-land, is an assistant coach. Another nephew, DeMarre Carroll, is now eligi-ble to compete for Mizzou this season after transferring from Vanderbilt. Car-roll was named the Big 12’s Preseason Newcomer of the Year.

Anderson’s family extends beyond his program as well. On Thanksgiving Day, the Anderson’s will host the en-tire team for dinner, but will fi rst extend their arms to the Columbia Community, serving Thanksgiving Dinner to a num-ber of local residents. The team also raised better than 700 pounds of food before Mizzou Madness this season, which in turn was enough food to pro-vide more than 550 meals to Columbia residents for the holidays.
