UNB FREDERICTONA first-class teaching and research institution, the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton (UNBF) is a home away from home for more than 8,000 students annually. Now in its third century, the campus has 11 academic faculties: Arts, Business Administration, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Forestry and Environmental Management, Kinesiology, Law, Nursing, Renaissance College and Science. The university’s cultural fare includes an art centre, galleries, concerts, films, and resident musicians and writers.

Those who wander outside the campus gates will experience the capital city of New Brunswick. Filled with parks and green spaces, Fredericton is known as the City of Stately Elms. It offers a variety of outdoor sporting activities, both on and off the river, and an inviting downtown core. Professional theatre, street-side cafés, and a farmer’s market all contribute to the city’s charm.

STEEPED IN TRADITIONUNBF shares with the University of Georgia the distinction of being the oldest English-language provincial or state institution of higher learning in North America.

The university traces its origins to a petition by early citizens of the province. A group of United Empire Loyalists, displaced by the American Revolution and newly arrived in the New Brunswick wilderness, were concerned about the education of the province’s children. On Dec. 13, 1785, seven of them petitioned Thomas Carleton, governor of New Brunswick, for the establishment of an “Academy or School of liberal Arts and Sciences” in the neighbourhood of “Frederickburg.”

From the academy that was eventually formed grew the College of New Brunswick, which later became King’s College (Fredericton), and finally the University of New Brunswick. In 1964 a second campus opened in Saint John.

FACILITIESOverlooking the St. John River, UNBF’s hillside campus is situated on 126 acres. While traditional in appearance with its Georgian-style architecture, the campus has one of the most advanced computing networks in the country.

Special facilities include the Wu Conference Centre, The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER – the province’s finest fitness facility – and the 5,000-seat Aitken University Centre, home ice to the Varsity Reds. Six gymnasiums, a pool, an indoor climbing wall, a challenge course and several sports fields round out the athletic facilities.

The university also has thousands of acres of forest land for education and research.

Fourteen residence halls — eight co-ed, two men’s and two women’s, an apartment style and a suite style — provide housing for 1,500 students. In the summer, 1,000 residence beds are available at reasonable rates for tourists, conference goers and students.

The campus’s five-branch library system includes the Harriet Irving Library — the largest library in the province.

ATHLETICS AND RECREATIONUNB Fredericton’s Varsity Reds provide exciting competition in basketball, hockey, soccer, swimming and volleyball. Teams regularly compete in national championships and 33 per cent of UNBF’s student athletes earn distinction as Academic All Canadians.

In addition to intramural programs, UNBF offers extensive recreation programs for members of the university community and the public.

RESEARCH & PARTNERSHIPSResearchers at the University of New Brunswick contribute to the academic body of knowledge not just intellectually but practically.

Through partnerships with business, industry, government and community groups, UNBF’s researchers provide leadership in the development and application of new technology, the resolution of social problems and the economic growth of the province and the region.
