University of Piraeus The University of Piraeus is

located in Piraeus, which is the port of Athens.

The University of Piraeus was founded in 1938.

Today it has 9 departments awarding degrees and doctorates in the corresponding scientific fields and it offers 17 M.Sc. programs.

University of Piraeus The University of Piraeus was founded in 1938 under the title of

the “School for Industrial Studies”, by the Industrialists and Tradesmen Association.

In 1945 it was renamed to “Higher School for Industrial Studies” and its aim was defined to be the systematic, theoretical and practical training of managerial executives.

In 1958, the “Higher School for Industrial Studies» was again renamed to “Graduate School of Industrial Studies”, with its headquarters in Piraeus. Starting from 1966, the University operated in the form of a public legal entity.

In 1989, the “Graduate School of Industrial Studies” was renamed to University of Piraeus.

Erasmus Policy  Statement The University of Piraeus (UP) is

one of the major Greek Public Universities and it entails one of the top-two business schools in Greece, at

both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The strategic goal of UP is to maintain and further improve

the quality of education, research, management systems, student services and relations with the community as well as

to enhance the international dimension of its activities in the challenges of the European higher education area,

Ask them if your university has a bilateral agreement with  University of Piraeus.

Greek language courses Greek language courses, which will enable exchange students to understand and

read the Greek language, are offered free to Erasmus students who are registered at the University of Athens, by the Modern Greek Language Teaching Centre of our University. Throughout the year there are three courses:Winter course: mid October-mid January Spring course: February-mid June Summer course: mid June-end July

For the enrollment in these courses students should submit to the Modern Greek Language Teaching Centre the following:two photographs

a photocopy of their student identification card.

Those interested should inform the International Relations Office of the University of Piraeus about their intention to attend Modern Greek Language Courses before registering at the courses , which are free of charge. The relevant fees are covered by our University budget as financial support to Erasmus motivated students. They also have to fullfil this Application Form for Greek Language Courses

Department of Informatics

The Department of Informatics began operating in 1992 and focuses on both theoretical and practical aspects and advancements of computer science.

It consists of 24 Faculty Member, Visiting Staff, Research Associates, Postdoctoral Fellows, PhD Students, Technical Staff.

The undergraduate program in Informatics lasts eight semesters.

From the third semester the students may optionally attend certain courses offered by other University Department so that they can expand their knowledge to related scientific areas.

Each course focuses equally on theory and on practical works carried our by students in the department’s laboratories.

MSc in “Advanced Information Systems”

The Department of Informatics, University of Piraeus, has organized and run since 2004-2005 a Program of Postgraduate Studies entitled “Advanced Information Systems”, in accordance with the decree and articles 10-12 of the Law 2083/92. The Program offers the following Postgraduate titles:

1) MSc in ‘Advanced Information Systems’ in four tracks: Technology of Embedded Computing Systems Network-Centric Information Systems Intelligent Technologies of Communication between

Humans and Computers Decision Support Systems

MSc in “Informatics”

Aims of the Postgraduate Course of Studies in “Informatics” is to strengthen the intra-scientific character of Informatics and connect it with other sciences, so as to develop a high quality level of knowledge in Informatics to scientists of different specializations, as well as feed Informatics itself new scientific fields of basic research and development of applications.

Some of the aims include: preparing and educating knowledgeable and able scientists and

researchers who will promote and advance the development of the country as well as Greek enterprises in the framework of the Society of Informatics

the close co-operation between the academic community and Business Enterprises for the acceptance, use and dissemination of the systems used in Informatics.

the co-operation with Greek, European and International scientific organizations dealing with issues of Informatics.
