RNR.D.CATALOG Course Catalog Display Revised July 18, 2011 by the User Coordination Group Page 1 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Student Information System OVERVIEW RNR.D.CATALOG (Course Catalog Display) is a six-page process that lists the details of every course ever offered at the University of Southern California that is in the Course Catalog file. It includes information on course ID, course title, grading options and terms offered, and other useful details. This process also shows the history of courses offered at USC. Course information usually remains constant from year to year, but changes are sometimes made to a course catalog listing. For example, a course title might change from “Numerical Analysis” to “Analytic Number Theory” or the grading type might change from credit/no credit to letter grade. Every version of every course is saved and viewable within the Course Catalog Display process, RNR.D.CATALOG.

OVERVIEW RNR.D.CATALOG (Course Catalog Display) is a six-page process that lists the details of every course

ever offered at the University of Southern California that is in the Course Catalog file. It includes

information on course ID, course title, grading options and terms offered, and other useful details.

This process also shows the history of courses offered at USC. Course information usually remains

constant from year to year, but changes are sometimes made to a course catalog listing. For example, a

course title might change from “Numerical Analysis” to “Analytic Number Theory” or the grading type

might change from credit/no credit to letter grade. Every version of every course is saved and viewable

within the Course Catalog Display process, RNR.D.CATALOG.

REFERENCE: PAGE 1 OF 6 Page one lists general information about the course: the Course ID and any previous Course ID numbers,

the title, the number of units the course was offered for and the last term the class was offered. It also

shows the Effective From and Effective Through terms in which the course has been offered and what

information has changed about the course, and when. The class Description is listed in the text box.

1. ID allows you to enter the course identification number that you wish to display. The ID is comprised of a valid course prefix and course number, separated by a hyphen. (Ex: ECON-203). Suffixes such as “a,” “b,” “c” and “d” indicate one of a series of courses and must be entered. (Ex: SPAN-794a) Other course suffixes, such as “L,” “g” and “x,” are codes indicating details about the course (either course restrictions or general education and diversity requirements) and should not be entered in the ID field. Entering the Course ID will bring up a reference list displaying all versions of the course if there is more than one version of the course in the course catalog file. For example, if you entered PSYC-100: 1. PSYC-100 933 972 Intro to Psychology 2. PSYC-100 973 Intro to Psychology 3. PSYC-100 813 932 Psych and Human

Behavior

Column one shows the Course ID. Columns two and three display the terms from and through which a particular version of the course was offered. Courses that list nothing in the through field (such as item two on the select list above) are currently being offered. Column four displays the course title for each version of the course. Different versions exist for the same course when, for example, the course title changes or the unit value changes. The user can select any version of the course from this list by number, enter “A” to select all the records or select “Q” to quit and return to the process. 2. PREVIOUS IDs displays all course IDs that previously represented the course. 3. LAST UPDATE displays the initials of the person who last updated the course information and the date that the update was made.

4. X ENROLL displays the alternate course ID used to identify the course when it is being co-offered by another department. For example, if the Linguistics Department offers a Sociolinguistics course (LING-150) that can also be taken by students in the Anthropology Department under the Course ID “ANTH-150,” only LING-150 would be entered into the Course Catalog. In the X Enroll field (under LING-150), ANTH-150 would be entered. Students interested in taking ANTH-150 would be directed in the Schedule of Classes to register for LING-150. 5. TITLE displays the official course title as recorded by the Curriculum Office in the System Catalog. For example, the title for “PSYC-100” is “Introduction to Psychology.” Any questions about the course title should be directed to the Curriculum Office. 6. FIX UNITS displays all possible units for which a course may be taken. For example, if a course can be taken for 2, 3 or 4 units, the numbers 2, 3 and 4 will be listed. 7. MAX UNITS displays the maximum number of units that can be earned when a student repeatedly takes a course. For example, if a course can only be taken for 2 units, and the Max Units is 8, the student will only be able to take the course 4 times and earn credit. After the maximum is reached, credit will no longer be given. 8. LAST OFFERED displays the last term that the course was offered in the Schedule of Classes. Terms after the year 2000 are the four-digit year followed by a 1 for spring, 2 for summer and 3 for fall. For years before 2000, terms are the two-digit year followed by a 1 for spring, 2 for summer and 3 for summer. For example, 20093 would display for the fall term of 2009 and 981 for the spring term of 1998. 9. EFF FROM displays the first term that the course will be (or was) effective.

10. EFF THRU displays the term through which the course will be (or was) no longer effective. 11. APPROVED displays the date that the Curriculum Committee approved a new Course Catalog entry or a change in an existing entry. 12. EFFECTIVE displays the term that a Course Catalog change was or will be effective. Terms after the year 2000 are the four-digit year followed by a 1 for spring, 2 for summer and 3 for fall. For years before 2000, terms are the two-digit year followed by a 1 for spring, 2 for summer and 3 for summer. For example, 20093 would display for the fall term of 2009 and 981 for the spring term of 1998. 13. INFORMATION WHICH CHANGED displays a code which indicates which component of the course information was changed.

The following are valid change codes: C Credit Restriction CN Continuation Course D Description DE Department DR Dropped E Effective Term G Grade Type H Hours Per Mode I Course ID N New O Co-Requisite P Pre-Requisite R Registration Restriction RE Reinstated T Title M Instruction Mode CE Cross Enroll ID MU Max Units GE General Ed AS Approved for Summer IN Approved for International UP Approved for University Park NA Not Approved DA Diversity Added DD Diversity Removed

15. DESCRIPTION displays the official description of the course which has been approved by the Curriculum Office and is listed in the Catalog of Classes.

Page 5

REFERENCE: PAGE 2 OF 7 Page two describes how a class is offered (instruction mode, hours and grade type) and in which terms a

course may be scheduled. If the course fulfills a General Education Requirement, that information will

be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

In the example below, PSYC-100 has been set up as a C for Lecture and can be taken for L a letter

grade. The available terms that the class is available are spring/summer/fall.

1. ID displays the identification number used to represent the course. The ID is comprised of a valid department prefix and course number, separated by a hyphen. (Ex: PSYC-100). A suffix may be attached if the class is part of a series. 2. TITLE displays the official course title as recorded by the Curriculum Office in the System Catalog. For example, the title for “PSYC-100” is “Introduction to Psychology.” 3. SECTION TITLE REQUIRED? displays an “N” for “Not Allowed,” an “O” for “Optional” or an “R” for “Required,” indicating whether a department will be required to enter a section title when they schedule the class. The Section Title Required? field provides additional information (beyond what is listed in the Course Title) as to the specific contents of a class. For example, MPWP-252 is “Individual Instrument Performance” for Wind and Percussion – however, more than one

section of MPWP-252 might be offered in any given term, each section focusing on a particular instrument. In this case, the section title would be used to identify the specific focus of each section, such as Oboe, Trumpet, or Saxophone. 4. INST MODE displays a code which indicates the manner in which the course will be taught. The following are valid instruction mode codes:

C Lecture L Lab CL Lecture/Lab D Discussion Q Quiz CD Lecture/Discussion LR Lab required

5. HRS/MODE displays the total number of hours per week that the class will be held in each instruction mode. For example, if AHIS-120, Foundations of Western Art, is offered in

Page 6: UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Student Information System€¦ · RNR.D.CATALOG Course Catalog Display Revised July 18, 2011 by the User Coordination Group Page 1 UNIVERSITY OF

RNR.D.CATALOG Student Information System

Page 6

both Lecture and Discussion modes, the hours per mode section might list “3” for the Lecture and “1” for the Discussion. That would mean that students enrolled in AHIS-120 would attend three hours of lecture and one hour of discussion each week. 6. GRADE TYPE displays the grading method used for the course. The following are valid grade type codes:

C Credit/No Credit L Letter Grade N Number PN Pass/No Pass V Audit IC In-progress to Credit/No Credit IL In-progress to Letter Grade W Withdrawal X Non-graded IP In-progress IG In-progress & Letter Grade IM In-progress & Credit/No Credit IZ In-Progress to Numeric

7. AVAIL TERMS displays either a “Y” for “Yes” or “N” for “No,” indicating whether the course may be scheduled for a spring, summer or fall term.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS 8. CATEGORY displays a code (or codes) representing the category of General Education requirements that the course satisfies. The following are the General Education category codes – 20 through 25 are the codes that are currently in use:

Code Description

REFERENCE: PAGE 3 OF 7 Page three details the majors, class standings and schools which do, or do not, allow students to register

in the course.

ID displays the identification number used to represent the course. The ID is a valid department prefix and course number, separated by a hyphen. (Ex: PSYC-100). A suffix may be attached if the class is part of a series. TITLE displays the official course title as recorded by the Curriculum Office in the System Catalog. For example, the title for “PSYC-100” is “Introduction to Psychology.” MAJORS displays the department codes for those majors specifically restricted from, or allowed to, register in the course. (See INCLUSIVE/EXCLUSIVE field.) CLASS STANDINGS displays a code for those class standings restricted from registering for the course or allowed to register in the course. (See INCLUSIVE/EXCLUSIVE field.)

The following are valid class standing codes:

U1 Freshman U2 Sophomore U3 Junior U4 Senior

Page 8

INCLUSIVE/EXCLUSIVE indicates whether students with the Majors, Class Standings or Schools listed will be allowed to register or are restricted from registering for the course. (See MAJORS, CLASS STANDING and SCHOOLS field.) Registration restrictions determine who can or cannot take a course – who can be included in class sections of the course and who should be excluded from taking the course. I = Inclusive This registration restriction operates to include (allow) in classes all students with Majors, Class Standings and/or Schools listed. Students with all other Majors, Class Standings and/or from other Schools will be restricted from taking or registering for the course. E = Exclusive This registration restriction operates to exclude (prevent) all students with

Majors, Class Standings and/or Schools listed from taking or registering for the course. For example, if Linguistics and Math majors are not allowed to register for the course, the following would be listed: Majors Inclusive/Exclusive LING I Including all those listed MATH If only Anthropology majors were allowed to register in the course, the following would be listed: Majors Inclusive/Exclusive ANTH E Excluding all those listed If only students in LAS were allowed to register in the course, the following would be listed: Schools Inclusive/Exclusive LAS E Excluding all those listed

ID displays the identification number used to represent the course. The ID is comprised of a valid department prefix and course number, separated by a hyphen. (Ex: PSYC-100). A suffix may be attached if the class is part of a series. TITLE displays the official course title as recorded by the Curriculum Office in the System Catalog. For example, the title for “PSYC-100” is “Introduction to Psychology.” NO MAJOR CREDIT section displays the department code for those majors that cannot take the course for major credit.

NO DEGREE CREDIT displays the department code for those majors that cannot take the course for degree credit. NO GRAD CREDIT displays the department codes for those majors that cannot take the course for graduate credit. For example, CSCI-100x, Introduction to Computer Science, is not available for major credit to computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics or chemistry majors. Therefore, the major codes CSCI, ENGR, MATH, PHYS and CHEM would be listed in the NOT FOR MAJOR CREDIT column.

Page 10

REFERENCE: PAGE 5 OF 7 Page five of this process displays information on prerequisites, co-requisites and concurrent enrollment

requirements for the course.

For example, the title for “PSYC-100” is “Introduction to Psychology.” PREREQUISITE/COREQUISITE INFORMATION 3. COURSE ID displays the course IDs for all courses that are prerequisites or co-requisites for the course represented. For example, if MATH-040 and MATH-107 are prerequisites or co-requisites for MATH-200, they would be displayed in the course ID field when MATH-200 is pulled up. 4. COREQ displays an “N” if the course in the Course ID field cannot be taken as a co-requisite, and must be taken as a prerequisite.

“Y” is displayed if the course in the Course ID field can be taken as a co-requisite, at the same time as the student is taking the course represented. For example, if CHEM-200 can be taken either before or at the same time as PHYS-200, a “Y” will display in the COREQ field. 5. GROUP is used to specify which prerequisites or co-requisites students must take if more than one prerequisite or co-requisite is required for the course. For example, EE-457 and either EE-101 or EE-352 must be taken before a student will be allowed to register for EE-680. That information would be listed in the Prerequisite/Co-Requisite Information window as follows:

Page 11: UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Student Information System€¦ · RNR.D.CATALOG Course Catalog Display Revised July 18, 2011 by the User Coordination Group Page 1 UNIVERSITY OF

Student Information System RNR.D.CATALOG

Page 11

Course ID CoReq Group All/# Sub Concurrent Enrollment 1. EE-457 N A A 1 1 2. EE-101 N B 1 1 3. EE-352 N B 1 1 In this case, EE-457 is in Group A, and as it says in the All/# column, all the classes in Group A must be taken before the student is allowed to register for the course represented. Only one class in Group B must be taken, so students must take either EE-101 or EE-352 in addition to EE-457. 6. ALL/# indicates how many of the courses in each group listed are prerequisites or co-requisites for the course represented. If only one course in a group must be taken, a “1” will be listed in the ALL/# column. If two classes within the group must be taken, a “2” will be listed. If all the courses within the group must be taken, an “A” (for all) will be listed. 7. SUB stands for Subgroup, and is used to delineate more specific prerequisite and co-requisite requirements for a course. The members of a subgroup are delineated by number. For example, AE-525b or CE-525b or ME-525 and ME-526 are prerequisites for ME-576. That information would be listed in the Prerequisite/Co-Requisite Information window as follows:

Prerequisite/Co-Requisite Information Other Requirements Course ID CoReq Group All/# Sub Concurrent Enrollment 1. AE-525b N A 1 1 2. CE-525b N A 1 2 3. ME-525 N A 1 3 4. ME-526 N A 1 3 In this case, a student can take either AE-525b or CE-525b as prerequisites for ME-576, or they can take ME-525 and ME 526. OTHER REQUIREMENTS 8. CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT displays the course ID for those courses that must be taken at the same time as the course listed. For example, if AE-105 or ANTH-105 or ANTH-125 must be taken concurrently with WRIT-140, all three courses will be listed in the Concurrent Enrollment field when WRIT-140 is pulled up. Since students must take only one of the three classes concurrently with WRIT-140, the numeral “1” is listed in the right hand column. If an “A” (for all) were listed in the right hand column, it would signify that the student would be required to take all four classes concurrently. 9. PREREQUISITE COMMENTS displays a more detailed explanation of the prerequisite requirements..

course.

For example, the title for “PSYC-100” is “Introduction to Psychology.” OWNING SCUNIT displays the SCUnit code of the department or the division of the department that owns the course. For example, LASS, the Social Science Division of

the Letters Arts and Science Department, is listed as the owning unit for the course PSYC-100. AUTHORIZED SCUNIT displays the SCUnit codes of the departments that are authorized to update information on the course. For example, both BUS and IOM are listed under authorized SCUnit for IOM-420. This allows the staff in both the Business School (BUS) and in the Information and Operations Management Department (IOM) to update information for the course.
