4 MEDICAL DEPARTMENT OF

18 8 l.

In this, their Twenty-eighth Circular and Catalogue, the Frwulty of the Medical Department of the University of Vermont are gratified in announcing the continuation of the success and advance which has ever attended the Institution under their charge. The Class of 1880 was the largest that has assembled within the walls of the College-numbering one hundred ::Llld forty-five Matriculants.

THE COLLEGE BUILDING,

Situated upon high gJ."Olmd and facing the College .Green, is of brick, well ventilated, and, as recently remodeled, affords greater facilities and comforts to the yen.rly increasing class of students than are usually found in institutions not located in the large cities.

By the liberality of the citizens of Burlington, the faculty have been enabled not only to greatly increase the size of their Lecture Room and Amphitheatre,-each having a seating capacity of two hundred and :fifty,-bnt also to erect an important acldition in which are the new Disseot!ng Room ancl Laboratory of Practical Chemistry, each of which is commodious and thoroughly appointed .

A large Museum, containing a great number of carefully arranged specimens, Anatomical and Pathological, both wet and dry, is open to the students during the session.

PLAN OF INSTRUCTION.

The plan of instruction adopted by this Institution consists of a complete course of scholastic Lectm es, by able Professors in the seven branches of Medical Science, viz : Ann.tomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Materia Medica, Surgery, Obstetrics, and the Theory and Practice of Medicine. In the practical branches there is also given clinical instruction, for which exceptional facilities are offered by the Mm·y Fletclze1· Hospital, the commodious amphitheatre of which Institution has been erected solely with a view to affording additional advantages to students of this College.

In order to render the course of instruction as thorough as possible the Faculty have selected a number of gentlemen to lecture upon special subjects. Such parts of the regt1lar course as are not taught in detail by the regular Professors will thus receive special attention by gentlemen who are acknowledged authorities in their respective specialties; each one giving a short and practical course of lectures.

THE UNI VERSITY OF VERMONT. 5

This }Jla:h, which was adopted for the fi rst t ime about five years ago, bas been highly appreciated by the students, since it enabled them to attain a more exact knowledge of important suhjects than they -could have received from the general lecture courses.

The Faculty announce the continuance of Pr~fessors Robert W. Taylor, Stephen M. Roberts, A. T. Woodward, D. B. St. John Roosa and G. M. Garland as instructors in their respective branches.

During the coming session the course of instruction upon special branches will be -greatly augmented by the lectures of four dist inguished gentlemen recently appointed in their respective departments, Dr. Clinton Wagner of New York, as Professor of Diseases ot•the Throat and ose ; Dr. William J . Morton as Professor of Diseases of the Mind and Nervous System; Ron . Edward J . Phelps as Professor of Medical Jurisprudence; and Prof. S. W. Thayer on Hygiene. ·

The Faculty wish.to call special attention to the fact that these lectures on special subjects are delivered during the regula.r session, without extra expense, and not in the preliminary term, as is the custom in most Colleges.

GENE RAL Ol)TLINE OF THE

f1®UKSE OF LECTUlllESo PRACTICE O F iUE D IC I N E.

Prof. WALTER CARPENTER.

The course of instruction in this department will be thorough, and such as will enable the student to become acquainted with the pathology and t reatment of special diseases, and supply him with the necessary knowledge to observe t he phenomena of disease. The Lectures will be illustrated with morbid specimens, casts, plates, and diagnims.

GENERAL, DESCRIPTIVE AND :SURGrcA.L ANATOMY. Prof. WILLIAM A . DARLING,

As a teacher in this department, Prof. Darling has no superior, as those who have listened to his lectures in both the Universities of Vermont and New York can testify. His lectm es will be illustrated by demonstrations upon the cadaver, as well as by plates and diagrams. For the acquirement, therefore, of a thorough and pra, ctical knowledge of Anatomy, this Instit ut ion offers the student superior advantages.

6 MEDIOAJ, D.EP A RTMENT OF

PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF SURGERY.

P rof. JAMES L. LITTLE.

The lectures on the Principles and Pmctice of Surgery will be both scholastic and clinical. They will be given by Prof. Little, who for many years held the position of lecturer on Operative Surgery ·and Surgical Dressings, in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York, and at present occupies a Ohair in the University of New York as Clinical Professor of Surgery, an d who is also one of the Surgeons to St. Luke's and St. Vincent's Hospitals in that City. ·

All the important surgical operations will be performed on the dead body, and the use of surgical instruments and appliances will be demonstrated to the class. These lectures will be illustrated by a :fine collection of plates, diagrams, and models. Lister's antiseptic method will be fully illustrated. A Clinic will be held every Wednesday and Saturday, during the Surgical conrse, in the large amphitheatre of the new Mary Fletcher Hospital, where every facility will be afforded the sttldents for witnessing all necessary Surgical operations.

OBSTETRICS AND DISEASES OF WOMEN.

Prof. A . F . A. KING.

Prof. King holds the same Ohair in the Columbian University, at Washington, D. 0., and is one of the attending physicians to Providence Hospital in that City.

Thi s course will comprise a series of Lectures on the Science and Practice of Midwifery, together with additional lectures on Gynrecology. The lectures on Obstetrics will be illustrated by an elaborate collection of life-sized diagrams, together with natural prepa.rations and papim· mache models, exhibiting the anatomy and physiology of reproduction in all its stages. The mechanism and practical management of natural and preter-natural labors will be demonstrated on appropriate manikins, and obstetrical instruments of all kinds will be exhibited, and their uses fully explained.

The department of Gynrecology, which has of late obtained so great a prominence in medical practice, will be thoroughly taught, both as regards theory and practice, and all instrumental and other appli.anccs, required in treating the Diseases of Females, will be presented. A complete assortment of instruments, and a new collection of colored diag.rams, will form an attractive feature in this department.

THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT.

M,A.TERU MEDICA AND GE:SERAL PATHOLOGY. Prof . H E N RY D . H OLTON.

· In this dcp~Lrtment, especial attention will be paid to the physiological effects, and the thempeutical adaptation of remedies, with particuln,r reference to their pmctical application, amply illustrated by experiments on living anima.ls. Pathological specimens, both wet and dry, will also be used in illustration of different pathological conditions.

The doses of Medicines will be taught in the Metric System, as it bas been for the past two years. This, it is believed, is not only the first but the only school in which this system has been systematically taught.

PHYSIOLOGY AND MICROSCOPIC .ANATOMY. Prof. A. P . GRINNELL.

The lectures in this department will be illustrated, as far as possible, by e1.1Jeriments Oll animals, and the use of microscopes, in order to exhibit to the student their more important facts and · principles; more es1Jecially will the general functions of human physiology receive attention, and the relations of normal and a.bnormal life be described. Histological illustrations will be ample, as several excellent microscopes will be furnished for the more full elucida, tion of this branch of study.

CHEMISTRY AND TOXICOLOGY . Prof. RUDOLPH A WITTHAUS.

The instruction in this de1jartment will be adapted to the special requirements of the pr:wtitioner in medicine. 'l'he philosophy of chemistry will be taught in such a manner as to afford the student a firm gronn.d-work for the rational study of the subject. Those portions of practical chemistry, having a direct bearing upon physiology, pathology and therapeutics, will be particularly dwelt upon, to the exclusion of those portions which are of mere technical interest ; the important applic:Ltion of chemistry to the science of poisons will receive particular attention.

In the recent enlargement of the College building, a commodious and well appointed practical laboratory has been added, in which special instruction in the chemical manipulations required in the ex:tmination of Urine, in 'l'oxicology and in such analytical processes as are required of the physician, is given by the Professor of Chemistry in person.

8 MEDICAL DEPAllT.MENT OF

Jeduns nn ~~uia:l ~uhjttts.

The Faculty, being desi1'ons of extending to the student every facility for the study of special departments of medicine, have established the following special courses, which will be extended hereafter, and it is believed that, with this addition to the regular curriculum, the advantages thus aj'o1·ded by this College are unsu?·passed by any medical institution o~dside of our large cities.

DISEASES OF THE SKIN .

Prof. Robert W. Taylor, one of the physicians to Charity Hospital, New York, whose labors in this department of medicine are well known to the Profession, will deliver a course of lectures on this subject, illustrated by plates, diagrams, an d microscopic speciJ;Ilens. He will also hold several clinics ; thus giving the students an opportunity of becoming familiar with the latest views on the subject of Derm.atology.

DISEASES OF CHILDREN.

Prof. Stephen M. Roberts will deliver a course of lectm es on Diseases of Infancy and Childhood, a department of study generally either completely ignored, or but very superficially treated, although of the utmost importance to the l)ractisiug physician.

SURGICAL DISEASES OF WOMEN.

Prof. A. T. Wood ward, of Brandon, Vt., will give, during the first part of the session, a course of lectmes on the Surgical Diseases of Women. The lectures will embrace subjects to which Dr. Woodward has for many years given special attention.

DISEASES OF THE EYE AND EAR .

Prof. D. B. St. John Roosa, of the University of New York, will give a course of lectures on the Diseases of the Eye and Ear. He will hold several clinics during the course, so that the student will be able to witnes·s most of the important operations in this · department.

THE UN!VE.RSITY OF VERMONT.

DISEASES OF THE HEART AND LUNGS.

Prof. G. M. Garland will give instruction in this department. A knowledge of auscultation and percussion, and oi cardiac and pulmon::try affections, constituting one of the most necessary elements in the acquirements of the practitioner, will be taught in the most practical manner, so as to render the student every facility for becoming expert in the diagnosis of thoracic diseases.

DISEASES OF THE lUND AND NERVOUS SYSTEM.

The course of lectures on Diseases of the Mind and Nervous System will be delivered by Dr. W. J. M01·ton. The lectures will be both clinical and didactic, and will have special reference to the improved methods of research and treatment estaLlished by the most recent investigations. Electricity, in its relations to the nervous Eystem, both in health and disease, will be the subject of particular attention.

DISEASES OF THE THROAT AND NOSE.

P~·of. Clinton Wagner, Surgeon-in-Chief of the Metropolitan Throat Hospital, New Y01~, will deliver a course of ten lectures on Djseases of the Throat and Nose. At his clinic, demonstrations w.ill be given, and Laryngoscopy and Rhinoscopy taught.

MEDICAL JURISPRUDENCE.

The teaching of Medical Jurisprudence has been neglected in most of the Medical Colleges for many years, and believing that a knowledge of the science is most essential to physicians, especially where medico-legal investigations require from the medical profession expert testimony, the Faculty feel sure that in adding this drpartment to the general curriculum of study, they have supplied a want which has long been felt.

The leg!l!l attainments and character of the gentleman who has been engaged to lecture upon this subject, is sufficient guarantee that the course will be thorough and practical. The profession are to be congratulated, that the services of Ron. Edward J. Phelps, who is so well and favorably known as a lawyer, have been secured.

HYGIENE, OR STATE MEDICINE.

Prof. S. W. Thayer will deliver a course of lectures upon the principles of Hygiene, or State Medicine , and their practical application to every clay life. .

10 MEDICAL DEP .A.RTMENT OF

CLINICAL ADVANTAGES.

The Faculty and Students of this College are especially indebted to a public spirited lady of Burlington, Mrss lHARY FLETCHER, who with munificent liberality donated from her private funds some seven years ago, the sum of $:200,000, for the building and endowment of a magnificent General Hospital, bearing her name, upon grounds immedi"ately !tdjoining those of the University.

This Hospital consists of a large and eleg~mt administrative building, with a large number of rooms for private patients, and two large p!tvilion Wards. In a separate building, connecting with the Wards and the administn1tive building, by a corridor, is a large amphithe:.Ltre, capable of seating nearly two hundred persons. There are also an anresthetizing and a recovery room, opening into the amphitheatre. Rooms for out-door patients are also attached to this building. In fact, every n.rrangement for Clinical instruction is found here.

In the n.mphitheatre Medical and Surgical Clinics will be held weekly during the regular session, to which all the students are admitted without extra charge.

There is n.lso a Pathological1·oom, capable of seating about one 'hunru·ed students. Here, during the session, all the post-mortem examinations will be held, in presence of the class, and lectures will be delivered on Pathologicnl Anatomy and Histology.

The following is the Medical and Surgical S.tnff of the Hospital :

l G MEDICAL DEPAR'niENT OF

To the P1'esident of the Vennont JJ!ledical Society :

Sm.- We, as delegates, attended the examination of the ·Graduating Class in the Medical Department of the University of Vermont, at the close of its last session of lectures. The class was

large and fully sustained the previous reputation of the Collegef for the intellegence of students and for the thoroughness of teach

ing by its Faculty. The increased Clinical advantages by the opening of the Mary Fletcher Hospital, giving abundant evidence of

their value to the students in the practical knowledge exhibited

during their examination. There is an evident anxiety on the part

of the Faculty and friends of the College, that it should maintain

a position in the front rank of institutions which require and sustain

a high standard of qualification.·; to which all must reach who should merit its honors and receive its degrees.

But again it becomes necessary to call attention to the painful • fact that in this, as in other Medical Colleges, many young men are

found as students, who are deficient in preliminary education,

ignorant of common and essential branches of study, unpracticed

in mental training and habits of thought. They undertake with

these fetters fastened upon them, what they can perform but impeTfectly.

In view of this fact, it is the duty of every physician, to deny ..;..

admission to his office, to all such students. It is the only remedy

until all Medical Colleges will require examination previous to admission to medical study.
