UNIVERSITIES OFFERING STUDY OPPORTUNITIES DURING YEAR 11 AND 12Hillcrest Christian College offers a range of opportunities for students to study a university subject whilst studying in Year 11 and 12. The following external University programs are available for students in Years 11 and 12:

STUDY A GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY SUBJECT AS PART OF NORMAL CLASSES

Hillcrest Christian College is pleased to announce it is partnering with Griffith University in 2014 to offer a range of University subjects that will be taught as part of selected Year 11 and 12 subjects at the College.

WHAT IS THE GRIFFITH PROGRAM?

Griffith Subjects are an excellent opportunity for students to experience a university course whilst completing their senior studies at Hillcrest.

The new Griffith University subjects are conducted over a two-year program and are undertaken as part of the College’s regular subject offerings in Year 11 and 12. Study is undertaken at Hillcrest.

In partnership with Griffith University Gold Coast Campus students will have the

opportunity to study a range of subjects and will be provided with small group tutorials each Wednesday afternoon. The students complete their normal assessment requirements for their chosen subject. They have a two-day workshop at Griffith University at the end of semester one in Year 11 and 12 to experience life on campus and to participate in a range of practical sessions relating to their subject.

Students who achieve over the required % in the end of course exam are eligible for credit of the equivalent university subject towards selected courses at Griffith University. They are also able obtain guaranteed entry to selected Griffith University Courses by selecting their course as their first QTAC option.

At the conclusion of their studies they will receive a certificate of completion from Griffith University.

GRIFFITH MATHSThis is a two-year program undertaken as part of the College’s regular Mathematics B course in Year 11 and 12.The course provides a foundation for later studies in mathematics and science at Griffith University. This course acts as a bridge between the students’ experience in mathematics in Years 11 and 12 and further tertiary study in mathematics.

Students who achieve over 65% in the end of course exam are eligible for credit of the equivalent university subject towards selected courses at Griffith University. They are also able obtain guaranteed entry to selected Griffith University Courses by selecting their course as their first QTAC option.

GRIFFITH CHEM This is a two-year program undertaken as part of the College’s regular Chemistry course in Year 11 and 12.

The Griffith School of Environment offers Year 11 and 12 students at Hillcrest Christian College the opportunity to study a Griffith University chemistry course while undertaking Senior Chemistry. Griffith Chem is an excellent opportunity for students to experience a university course whilst completing their senior studies.

Students who achieve over 65% in the end of course exam are eligible for credit of the equivalent university subject towards selected courses at Griffith University. They are also able obtain guaranteed entry to selected Griffith University by selecting their course as their first preference on their QTAC application.

GRIFFITH BIOLOGYThis is a two-year program taken over Year 11 and 12 in the Biology subject.

The Griffith Health Group, Griffith University offers Year 11 and 12 students the opportunity to study Griffith Biology while undertaking Senior Biology at Hillcrest. Griffith Biology is an excellent opportunity for students to experience university courses whilst completing their senior studies.

Students participate in on-campus practical experiences and tutorials during Year 12. Students who obtain credit for the course have the potential to obtain guaranteed entry to n degree program as nominated by Griffith University by selecting their course as their first QTAC option, provided they meet the entry requirements of the course.

GRIFFITH INFOTECHThis is a two-year program taken over Year 11 and 12 in the Information, Process and Technology Subject (IPT).

The School of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Griffith University offers Year 11 and 12 students the opportunity to study Griffith University ICT courses while undertaking Senior IPT at High School. Griffith InfoTech is an excellent opportunity for students to experience university courses whilst completing their senior studies.

If students enrol in a Griffith University ICT degree they will be eligible for credit in 1001ICT Introduction to Programming for successfully completing Griffith InfoTech 1 in Year 11 and 1005ICT Object-oriented Programming for successfully completing Griffith InfoTech 2 in Year 12, credit for providing these courses are core requirements for their selected degree.

Students who achieve over 65% in Griffith InfoTech 1 and Griffith InfoTech 2 are eligible for credit of the equivalent university subject towards selected courses at Griffith University. They are also

able obtain guaranteed entry to an ICT degree program as nominated by Griffith University by selecting their course as their first QTAC option, provided they meet the entry requirements of the course.

GRIFFITH INFOSYSThis is a two-year program taken over Year 11 and 12 in the Information, Process and Technology Subject (IPT).

The School of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Griffith University offers Year 11 and 12 students the opportunity to study Griffith University ICT courses while undertaking Senior IPT at High School. Griffith InfoSys is a study of business informatics and is an excellent opportunity for students to experience university courses whilst completing their senior studies.

If students enrol in a Griffith University ICT degree they will be eligible for credit in 1008ICT Business Informatics for successfully completing Griffith InfoSys Part 1 in Year 11 and Griffith InfoTech Part 2 in Year 12, providing these courses are core requirements in their selected degree.

Students who achieve over 50% in Griffith InfoSys 1 are eligible for credit of the equivalent university subject towards selected courses at Griffith University. They are also able obtain guaranteed entry to an ICT degree program as nominated by Griffith University by selecting their course as their first QTAC option, provided they meet the entry requirements of the course.

Griffith Chem is an excellent opportunity for students to experience a university course whilst completing their senior studies.

Griffith Chem is a two year program during your Year 11 and 12.

YEAR 11 STUDIES:• Study the content of the first half

of Griffith Chem course within the normal delivery of Year 11 Senior Chemistry. Two nominated laboratory sessions and write-ups will contribute towards Griffith Chem. All content and laboratory sessions will be undertaken at School with your teacher.

• Have the option of a day excursion to Griffith University to utilise practical equipment to complete an assessment in a water topic. This will be at the discretion of the school and Griffith University.

• Complete the stage 1 examination for Griffith Chem towards the end of Year 11. This exam will be undertaken at School. Students who pass both laboratory sessions and achieve 50% or higher on the stage 1 examination will be invited to continue with the Griffith Chem program in Year 12. An administration/laboratory fee of $85 (to be reviewed before 2014) will be payable to Griffith University by students who continue with the Year 12 stage of the Griffith Chem course.


YEAR 12 STUDIES:• Study the content of the second half

of Griffith Chem within the normal delivery Year 12 Chemistry. This will be undertaken at school with your teachers.

• Attend the Griffith University campus on two days to complete Griffith Chem laboratory sessions and write-ups. Dates and times to be determined with anticipated dates in June/July.

• Complete the end of course examination for Griffith Chem towards the end of Year 12 academic year. This will be undertaken at the University campus.

WHAT DOES PARTICIPATING IN GRIFFITH CHEM MEAN TO YOU ?If you successfully complete Griffith Chem over the two years by completing the laboratory sessions and the two examinations at an overall pass or better, you will be awarded a formal Certificate of Completion by Griffith University.

If you then enrol in a Griffith University degree program you will be eligible for credit for your first semester, first year, Griffith University chemistry course, either 1001ENV Chemistry, 1013ENV Chemistry in Biological Systems 1, or 1101BPS Chemistry A providing that course is a core requirement in your degree.

In addition, if you have done very well in Griffith Chem, by achieving an overall Pass or better for laboratory sessions and achieving a percentage of 65% or better for the end of program examination, and meet the entry admission pre-requisites into a Science or Environment program as nominated by Griffith University, you will be eligible for guaranteed acceptance into your selected program on the proviso that you list that program as your first QTAC preference.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE/ BACHELOR OF INFORMATIONThis program builds on the increasing reliance of science on computing and information technology such as collecting and analysing data from laboratory instruments; storing and retrieving information and related studies.


GRIFFITH MATHS YEAR 11 AND 12 PROGRAMThe course revises and extends basic integral and differential calculus of one variable, introduces partial derivatives and basic vector algebra in two and three dimensions. It provides a foundation for later studies in mathematics and science.

COURSE AIMSThis course acts as a bridge between the students’ previous experience in mathematics and further tertiary study in mathematics. It provides the basis for the acquisition of the basic computational and theoretical skills necessary for the practising scientist, mathematician, engineer and pilot and introduces students to the mathematical way of thinking desirable in the training of these professionals.

The course revises and extends basic integral and differential calculus of one variable, introduces partial derivatives and basic vectors in three dimensions. It provides a mathematical foundation for later studies in mathematics and science.

LEARNING OBJECTIVESAfter successfully completing this course as part of Year 11 and 12 Mathematics B students should be able to:

• Manipulate 2D and 3D vectors and use vector addition and subtraction as well as the dot and cross product of vectors. Use these ideas in problems involving geometric, force and velocity vectors.

• Know and use the standard addition formulas for sin, cos and tan. Be able to prove some of the simpler trig addition formulas. Understand and use the inverse trigonometric functions.

• Define and evaluate reasonably straightforward limits and be able to use and interpret the limit definition of the derivative.


• Calculate derivatives using the sum, product, quotient and chain rule. Know the derivatives of basic functions.

• Identify the local maxima, minima and points of inflection of straightforward functions and use this information to sketch the graphs of these functions.

• State and use the small change formula appropriately.

• Convert word problems into mathematics and analyze them using calculus.

• State and calculate Taylor approximations to standard functions.

• State and use l’Hopital’s rule to evaluate 0/0 limits.

• Understand the definition of integrals using Riemann sums and be able to provide a variety of situations in which the integral is used besides areas under curves.

• State the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus and be able to evaluate simple definite and indefinite integrals.

• Be able to use straightforward substitutions to evaluate integrals.

• Use definite integrals to calculate areas.

• Understand the geometric meaning and the analytic definition of partial derivatives. Calculate the first and second derivatives of straightforward functions and be able to apply the small change formula for functions of several variables.

WHAT WILL I GET FROM THE PROGRAM?The Bond University Student for a Semester Program is a great chance to kick-start your university career because you’ll study a Bond subject, meet university students and professors, and get involved in university life. You might even discover a new career that interests you.

You might find this program challenging at times, because of the extra study and classes you must attend each week, but if your parents and teachers agree that you’re capable, then we highly recommend you apply for Student for a Semester.

THINKING OF PURSUING TERTIARY STUDIES AT BOND UNIVERSITY ONCE YOU COMPLETE HIGH SCHOOL?Bond University offers students who successfully complete two Student for a Semester subjects with direct admission into some of our full degree programs (some restrictions apply*) at Bond University upon completion of their Year 12 studies. *Please note: Direct entry is not automatically applicable for a Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery. All offers are conditional upon the completion of Year 12. Credit for subjects cannot be applied towards the Bachelor of Architecture due to the structure of the degree, however direct admission will still be accepted.

WHAT WILL I GET FROM THE PROGRAM?The Enhanced Studies Program (ESP) provides students with an opportunity to extend their knowledge and find out more about university study, assessment and campus life by doing a university subject during semester one of Year 12.

WHAT CAN I STUDY?Whatever your interests, we offer a selection of entry courses in: Engineering/IT, Humanities, Science and Maths, Business and Law, and Languages.

Hillcrest Christian College facilitates student’s enrolment and study in external courses in the ESP Program. These include:

CHEM1010: FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEMISTRYProvides an introduction to Chemistry as a molecular science and an understanding of the structure and reactions of organic molecules.

MATH1051: CALCULUS AND LINEAR ALGEBRA 1Provides an important foundation in calculus and linear algebra that will prove useful for further studies in pure and applied sciences, engineering, finance or further mathematical pursuits.

MATH1061: DISCRETE MATHSProvides an introduction to discrete Maths and will be useful for students who are planning to study advanced mathematics,

computer science, engineering or science and information technology.

PHYS1001: MECHANICS AND THERMAL PHYSICS IProvides an introduction to kinematics, dynamics, momentum and energy, rigid body rotation, elasticity and fluids, oscillations, and thermodynamics.

RELN1000: WORLD RELIGIONSIntroduces students to the basic principles of many of the world religions: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and New Religious Movements and spiritualties.

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY GUEST PROGRAMYEAR 11 AND 12

WHAT WILL I GET FROM THE PROGRAM?Through the Griffith University Early Start to Tertiary Studies (GUESTS) Program, motivated students can study a university course (subject) while at high school. They can experience the challenge and excitement of university life, and have the chance to receive guaranteed entry into Griffith University.

As a GUESTS student, you will attend class with undergraduate students. You’ll be enroled as a non-award Griffith University student and receive a student ID card. You will also have access to a range of resources and services including libraries, online learning resources, careers advice and learning skills workshops. Griffith University sponsors GUESTS students, so you won’t need to pay tuition fees or student contribution charges while studying through the program. Personal study costs such as textbooks, stationery and photocopying will be your responsibility.

GUESTS students who complete one university course and achieve a Pass grade or better are eligible to receive a Guaranteed Offer of Entry to a wide range of undergraduate degree programs at Griffith University.

GUESTS students receive one bonus admission rank towards other Griffith University degree program preferences when applying through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) or the NSW Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY APPLICATION DATESSemester 1 – Year 11 students apply for the GUESTS program in October to commence in February the following year.

Semester 2 (July) - Year 12 students applying must submit their application by 30 May.

Summer Semester – Applications open until 15 September. Year 11 students only can apply to undertake a course in the Summer Semester.

SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY HEAD START PROGRAMYEAR 11 AND 12

WHAT WILL I GET FROM THE PROGRAM?SCU Head-Start provides an opportunity for Year 11 and 12 students to gain direct entry and advanced standing into a variety of courses offered at Southern Cross University. Free from university fees, the program offers you the chance to gain a taste of university life stimulate your interest in academic pursuits and enhance your educational performance and long-term aspirations.

The program has been designed for students who have the academic capability to succeed at university. Applicants will be selected on merit, based on their academic performance, a personal statement and the recommendation of their Principal.

WHAT CAN I STUDY?A typical three-year university degree requires you to complete 24 units of study. These units are usually comprised of core units and elective units. Through Head-Start you will have the choice to study one of two units. Both units have been selected as they can be used as core units or elective units within a large number of courses offered by Southern Cross University. The options available for study in 2014 are Communication in Organisations and Human Physiology.

COMMUNICATION IN ORGANISATIONSOffered during our First Session 2014 at our Gold Coast, Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses. Good communication skills are essential in most professional

settings. This unit aims to provide you with communication skills necessary for employment and academic study. Topics covered include public speaking and verbal reporting, intercultural communication, academic integrity and skill development in negotiation and persuasion. You will also be introduced to a range of communication theories and concepts designed to increase your understanding of the role interpersonal communication has within our day-to-day lives. The study program for the Communication in Organisations unit will include tutorials and lectures.

HUMAN PHYSIOLOGYOffered during our Second Session 2014 at Gold Coast, Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses This unit is ideal for those interested in developing their scientific knowledge and skills. With a predominant focus on the physiological mechanisms of the human body, human physiology also provides students with extensive clinical experience leading to student confidence and proficiency within a laboratory environment. As a practical based unit that encompasses areas of study focusing on physiological investigation and measurement it is most suited to those who have an interest in a scientific field of study. The study program for this unit will include practical laboratory sessions, internal lectures and lectures delivered via podcast.
