MISSION STATEMENT The USF Herd of Thunder Athletic Bands aim to provide quality entertainment to a wide variety of audiences, support our athletic teams with pride, perpetual spirit, and integrity, and create a musically enriching and enjoyable experience for every member. Current and alumni members of the band are invested in creating and maintaining a warm and welcoming environment where the contributions of all are valued and appreciated. We consistently strive for the highest degree of performance while representing the University of South Florida with class, dignity, and enthusiasm.

MEMBERSHIPMembership in the USF Herd of Thunder Athletic Program is open to full-time, college degree-seeking students who are enrolled in a minimum of nine credit hours per semester at any of the University of South Florida’s branch campuses, the University of Tampa, or any of the area community, two, or four year colleges. Students who attend an outside institution that offers an Athletic Band Program are not eligible to participate with the USF Herd of Thunder Athletic Program. All members must register for MUN1100 (CRN# 10895) for 1-3 credit hours in the spring semester. Students who are not registered by Friday, January 11th will no longer be allowed to participate in Pep Band. For questions regarding NDS registration (those not full-time USF students), please read through the following link and contact Jason Bombaugh directly with any specific questions. http://herdofthunder.usf.edu/nds/

FIRST REHEARSALS & ON-SITE REGISTRATION Any student who wishes to participate in Pep Band must complete the online registration form by Friday, October 12, 2018. Instruments and/or music will not be issued to a student who has not completed the registration process. Students who are in need of an instrument for Pep Band must meet with the Graduate Assistants directly at our rehearsals. All members of Pep Band are required to attend our two pre-season rehearsals and onsite-registrations on October 5th and October 12th. Rehearsals will take place in the Instrumental and Choral Rehearsal Halls of the School of Music (MUS 119 & 140) from 6:00pm - 8:30pm. On-Site Registration will begin at 5:15pm and will take place in the lobby of the School of Music. Attendance is required as a majority of the music performed by the ensemble is covered during this time as well as uniform/merchandise purchases. Students who do not attend these meetings without a compelling reason (work schedule does not count) will not be allowed to join Pep Band. Any requests to miss one of these meetings must be emailed to Mr. Braue directly.

GRADING There are approximately 34 home basketball games each season and grades are based upon the number of basketball games that a student attends. Please note that Volleyball games are for additional travel points only and cannot count towards a members ten game quota. Members are required to attend approximately 1/3 of these games, and a full assignment schedule will be posted on Facebook and Canvas by the Director.

‣ A = Attend at least 10 games and have no unexcused absences ‣ B = Attend at least 9 games and have no more than 1 unexcused absence ‣ C = Attend at least 8 games and have no more than 1 unexcused absence (No Travel) ‣ F = Attend fewer than 7 games or have more than 2 unexcused absences (No Travel)

Arriving after the first downbeat or leaving before the end of an event will result in the student not getting full credit for the event unless the Director was notified ahead of time (72 hours minimum unless there is an emergency situation). Members are free to get a substitute for any basketball game they cannot attend and are free to come to any basketball game to which they are not assigned to. If a substitute is used, the member will not receive trip points for that basketball game and it will not count towards your ten basketball game obligation. However, you will not be penalized for missing the basketball game. Students who do not show up and/or do not have a substitute will receive an unexcused absence for that game.

ATTENDANCE All Pep Band members are required to report for rehearsal at the Yuengling Center (gate D) 60 minutes prior to the scheduled tip-off of all scheduled events. Students should arrive early enough to warm-up and check-in BEFORE the 60 minute call time (75 minutes is highly recommended). Students are required to sign-in on the attendance sheet that will be brought by either the Director or Graduate Conductor. NOTE: Students must be dressed in full uniform and have their flip folder in order to check-in. Once the game is over, it is too late to go back and make adjustments. If a student forgets to sign in at an event, he/she will not receive credit for being present - no exceptions!

TARDINESS Members will be marked as tardy if they are not ready to begin ensemble warm-ups at the 60 minute call time. Students will receive a one letter deduction from their final grade on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th tardy. Students who are marked tardy or leave before the conclusion of an event will only receive half the points for that game unless the Director has been notified ahead of time, in which case a penalty may or may not be incurred at the discretion of the Director. NOTE: Students may not arrive very early for the second game of a double-header and get partial credit for the first game.

SUBSTITUTES Members who know that they cannot be present at a basketball game to which they are assigned are required to obtain a substitute to cover their spot. The substitute must play the same instrument/part as the student who is missing and must be on the official class roster. The absent member and his/her substitute are both required to email the Director at least 72 hours prior to the events scheduled time. Exceptions to this policy include emergency situations or sudden illness, however, in either event the member must communicate these situations to the Director via email. Any student who agrees to be a substitute and does not show up will be assigned an unexcused absence.

PERFORMANCE ETIQUETTE AND CONDUCT Pep Band is frequently shown on television broadcasts as well as the video boards inside the Yuengling Center. Therefore, the band must be an upstanding representation of the University at all times. Members are permitted to use their cell phones and other electronic devices during breaks only. Members are allowed to discreetly bring snacks into the Yuengling Center using their official Marching Band clear bags or Adidas Backpacks, however, students may only eat during the first seven minutes of halftime. As the primary purpose of the Pep Band is pep, all members are expected to be observant to the game, cheer for the team, and join in with the Cheerleaders and Sun Dolls when they cheer. Members are required to remain standing throughout the game until instructed to sit by the Director and/or Graduate Conductor. Smoking, illegal substances, alcohol usage, and offensive language of any kind to any person (including the heckling of opposing team players, coaches, and/or fans) will not be tolerated and may result in the removal of a member from Pep Band. Friends, family, and other non-band members are not allowed in the band’s seating area of the stands.

MUSIC Librarians will distribute music during our two pre-season rehearsals to students who have completed their online registration form. As new charts are added throughout the season, librarians will distribute parts accordingly. Every member is required to have all of his/her music in a flip folder (not a phone) at every game. Failure to have a flip folder with all music at a game will result in a member being marked tardy. If you lose your music it is your responsibility - not the librarians - to make copies from somebody else’s folder.

UNIFORM The complete Pep Band performance uniform consists of Marching Band T-Shirt, Black Adidas Track Pants, Green/Gray Pullover, Black Socks, and Black Shoes. Adidas apparel comes in both Men’s and Women’s sizes and must be purchased through our online store during the second pre-season rehearsal (costs outlined in the tables below). In addition, members will also be able to purchase several “non-required” items at on-site registration, such as a Marching Band Clear Bag or Adidas Backpack. Please see the tables below that outlines the costs for items related to Pep Band.

NOTE: Our Athletics Program is sponsored and endorsed by Adidas Inc. Shoes that display other athletic company logos (Nike, Reebok, Under Armour) will not be permitted to be worn during performances.

NOTE: Only the official Pep Band Pullover may be worn when in uniform. Other USF hoodies, jackets, etc. will not be permitted.

TRAVEL Travel is finalized near the start of the spring semester when the Director receives specific instructions from USF Athletics. Pep Band members who are eligible for travel will be contacted individually by the Director. If selected for travel, expenses including airfare, hotel, and daily per-diem are covered by USF Athletics. All trips are “open-ended” depending upon the progression of the basketball team(s). Trip eligibility is based upon a members attendance points, grade, and seniority points. The diagrams below outline the policy and procedures related to seniority points and tie breakers.

Pep Band members selected for travel are required to attend the official trip meeting, which will be scheduled by the Director towards the end of the basketball season (approx. one week before trip departure). The use of alcohol or any illegal substances throughout the bands travel will not be tolerated. Violators will be dismissed from Pep Band and/or reported to USF for additional consequences. Students who travel to a Conference Tournament will also receive the first invitation to travel to an NCAA tournament. Instrumentation for travel to either tournament is as follows:

COMMUNICATION Pep Band members are required to join both the 2018/19 Pep Band Facebook Group and Remind accounts. NOTE: Our Remind account is only used to send text messages from the Director to the students and does not require members to create or open their own Remind accounts. Below is a standard outline for communication:

‣ Schedules, Attendance and Grading will be done through Canvas and Facebook (grading done through Canvas only). ‣ Announcements and scheduling updates will be done through Email and Facebook. ‣ Call-time reminders, trip memos, and last minute updates will be done via Remind and Facebook.

ALL MEMBERS ARE EXPECTED TO CHECK THESE FORMS OF COMMUNICATION ON A DAILY BASIS.

Members are asked not to use the Pep Band Facebook group to ask for subs. Such requests would be appropriate in each section’s individual Facebook groups.

UNIVERSITY POLICY - HAZING (1) The University of South Florida system (USF system) prohibits any form of hazing of its students, including hazing by students or other persons associated with any student organization, at any time, and at any location. (2) Definition: As used in this regulation, "hazing" as defined by Section 1006.63, Florida Statutes, means any action or situation that recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for purposes including, but not limited to, initiation or admission into or affiliation with any organization operating under the sanction of a postsecondary institution, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate. "Hazing" includes, but is not limited to, pressuring or coercing the student into violating state or federal law, any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug, or other substance, or other forced physical activity that could adversely affect the physical health or safety of the student, and also includes any activity that would subject the student to extreme mental stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct that could result in extreme embarrassment, or other forced activity that could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the student. Hazing does not include customary athletic events or other similar contests or competitions or any activity or conduct that furthers a legal and legitimate objective. In addition to Florida Statutes Section 1006.63, hazing as defined by the University of South Florida system also includes, but is not limited to: the forced use of alcohol, morally degrading or humiliating games and activities, physical and psychological shocks, deception, verbal abuse, personal servitude, kidnapping, deprivation of privileges granted to others in the organization, by use of force or duress, and any other activities which are contrary to academic achievement, the stated purpose of the local and/or (inter)national organization and/or the mission, policies or regulations of the University of South Florida system or applicable state law. (3) Investigation and Response: The USF system will respond and investigate reports of alleged hazing received from any source and will determine whether to proceed with campus disciplinary action, to forward a report to appropriate law enforcement officials for prosecution as a criminal matter, or both. All reports of hazing will be directed for investigation to the appropriate department depending on the nature of the report. (a) Persons who know, or suspect that hazing has taken place are required to report hazing to the Office of the Dean for Students and/or Fraternity and Sorority Life. (b) Individual: In most cases, an individual will be referred to the campus conduct officer and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the Student Code of Conduct. The USF system Student Code of Conduct is available on-line at WWW.SA.USF.EDU/SRR. Legal Process: If criminal charges are filed against an individual, group, or organization, the USF system reserves the right to proceed with its investigation and adjudication process according to the Student Code of Code as the USF system handles the educational aspect of the alleged violations separately from any criminal legal procedures.

USF SCHOOL OF MUSIC ALCOHOL POLICY Musicians found to have consumed alcoholic beverages or illegal substances before or during rehearsals or performances may immediately lose ensemble membership, forfeit any scholarship or talent grant award given by the School of Music for the duration of their time at USF with a payback for semester of infraction, and receive an F for the course. Students found to have abused their professional ethic in such a manner will be held in conference with the conductor, chair, and/or applied instructor and will face possible further disciplinary consequences.
