Congratulations on choosing healthcare as a career, it is a truly noble purpose that everyone at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) is proud to share with you.

We began by being the home of surgical training in Ireland, and the establishment of RCSI Bahrain reflects our commitment to advancing health in the region by bringing our expertise to the Middle East. We have a different calibre of graduate at our university, and the quality of institutions our students go on to join across the world is a testament to this.

RCSI Bahrain is a constituent university of the RCSI in Dublin, and the curriculum, philosophy and operational standards are identical at both campuses.

RCSI has been at the forefront of educating healthcare professionals since 1784. As a self-funding, not-for-profit organisation, we chart our own course in our quest to improve healthcare training, and to yield improvements in patient outcomes. WHY RCSI BAHRAIN?OUR VISIONRCSI Bahrain is dedicated to the development of healthcare leaders who make a difference worldwide, and the advancement of human health on a global scale. Our mission is to inspire, educate and train competent and caring graduates who are well prepared to enter specialty training and assume leadership roles when they graduate. We are a university who knows where we are going, and everything we do runs in line with our three strategic pillars of Teaching and Learning; Research; and Community Engagement.

Ultimately your goal in studying healthcare is to enhance wellbeing, and both our students and faculty actively pursue this philosophy with their time to help develop the community they live in. Our dedicated Community Engagement team runs many projects and initiatives both in Bahrain and abroad, such as our Mobile Diabetes Unit which generates awareness of this prevalent condition amongst children, as well as links with the Bahrain Diabetic Society and our connection with Action Ireland Trust to support their on-site charitable work in Lesotho, Africa, Vietnam and India.

TEACHING & LEARNING

At the heart of enhancing patient care is constant research, and we are proud to devote significant resources to developing biomedical and health services research in Bahrain and the wider region, including funding student research projects. Our staff and students are actively involved in research, and our teaching is research-led. RCSI Bahrain’s students and staff have a genuine passion for research, and we train postgraduate scientists and clinicians for internationally competitive careers in basic and clinical research.

The quality of our teaching and learning is assessed and enhanced daily, and allows us to attract the best calibre of students from all over the world. You will be able to apply the skills you will learn at RCSI Bahrain directly into the workplace, through our blended learning approach of classroom and hospital-based study. Many of our alumni have gone on to careers in some of the best institutions in the world, with employers being consistently impressed by our graduates.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

ACCREDITATION & RECOGNITIONWe have received official accreditation from many reputable health boards and councils for the quality of our programmes, including the Irish Medical Council who accredited us in 2014. This accreditation is based on the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) standards, which are the highest available in medical education. Our School of Medicine is included in the World Health Organisation’s World Directory of Medical Schools, and the International Medical Education Directory, Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). All programmes offered by RCSI Bahrain have also achieved full confidence in an external review by the National Authority for Qualifications and Quality Assurance of Education & Training (NAQQAET, 2012).

RCSI Bahrain is fully accredited by the Irish Medical Council (IMC), and by obtaining a degree from our university you can go on to work in leading global institutions in Bahrain, the MENA region, Europe, and North America.

TEACHING FACILITIESOur facility is purpose built, with lecture theatres, laboratories, Clinical Simulation Centre, tutorial and group study rooms, a Learning Resource Centre (LRC), and spacious canteen. The campus provides a dynamic environment through the student affairs, student welfare, academic career offices and a Centre for Student Success (CSS). Additionally, we have an electronic Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

INTERNATIONAL ELECTIVESStudents will take part in 4-to-6-week international electives, usually placements in developing countries or institutions of excellence, and most often taken in the later years of the programme. Partners include the American University of Beirut, Duke University USA, Florida International University, College of Medicine USA, Kochi University Japan, Johns Hopkins Singapore and many others. RCSI Bahrain is also a member of the Global Education in Medicine Exchange (GEMx) and the Global Health Learning Opportunities Collaborative (GHLO) facilitating global mobility for our elective students. AFFILIATED TEACHING HOSPITALSStudents experience clinical tuition at our partner institutions including the King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH), Bahrain Defence Force Hospital - Royal Medical Services (BDF), Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC), Shaikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa Cardiac Center. Also, memoranda of understanding with local and international hospitals facilitate clinical electives.

AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED DEGREEYou will graduate from the School of Medicine with the degrees of MB, BCh, BAO Degree (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of the Art of Obstetrics) from RCSI Bahrain and from the National University of Ireland (NUI). You will also become a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

OVERVIEW

Our medical programme is either five or six years, and is designed to provide the essential principles of both the science and art of medicine. We focus on giving you the essential skills and competencies you need to take straight into the workplace with a strong emphasis on professionalism, ethics and patient safety. Our medical graduate profile consists of five themes, including basic and clinical sciences, personal and professional development, clinical competence and international health.

During your studies you will also be exposed to a variety of clinical specialties, and encouraged to develop a perspective of domiciliary, community and hospital care. You are also given the opportunity to undertake research electives with the academic and clinical departments of the university as part of our summer research programme.

We produce doctors who have a thorough understanding of the ethical principles underpinning the practice of medicine, safety and quality in healthcare.

WHY NURSING?What attracts you to nursing? The same thing that makes us passionate about educating competent and caring nurses – we want to help make people’s health better. We prepare work-ready nurses who can be proud of their careers and meet the needs of their patients and the health services. Since the establishment of the school in 2006 we have educated our nursing graduates with the support and collaboration of our long-term partners: Tamkeen; the Ministry of Health; King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) , Bahrain Defence Force Hospital - Royal Medical Services (BDF), Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC), Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa Cardiac Centre, private hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

OVERVIEW

Our undergraduate BSc (Hons) Nursing programme is a four-year, full time course which develops the main themes of health, illness, nursing, caring and environment. Within these themes the curriculum is designed around the values of health promotion, health maintenance, illness prevention, communication, problem-solving and critical thinking, caring, evidence-based nursing and partnership.

We also offer a BSc (Hons) Nursing Bridging Programme which is specially designed to upgrade a Nursing Diploma level qualification to a BSc (Hons) Nursing Degree and enable career advancement. Whatever the nurses clinical background - general hospital, psychiatry, community nursing or midwifery, this programme provides the opportunity to enhance your personal and professional development.

An MSc in Nursing is also offered by our School of Postgraduate Studies & Research in association with the School of Nursing & Midwifery. Ths is open to practicing nurses with a BSc in Nursing, either in Bahrain or internationally. (See page number 22 for more information)

The RCSI Bahrain School of Postgraduate Studies and Research supports and carries out leading biomedical research, and integrates basic and clinical research, so that advances in medical science are translated as quickly as possible into patient treatments.

RCSI Bahrain is committed to providing increased opportunities for postgraduate studies – both taught and through research – on a progressive ladder of continuing education. We are proud to train postgraduate scientists and clinicians for internationally competitive careers in basic and clinical research, a taught Masters programme in Nursing, an MSc in Healthcare Management*, an MSc in Safety & Quality in Healthcare Management*, with future developments including research and taught masters and PhD programmes investing up to $1.5 million over five years.

Graduates from the MSc in Nursing programme will receive degrees from RCSI Bahrain and from the National University of Ireland (NUI).

Our programmes aim to develop reflective practitioners with the skills and knowledge necessary to identify, evaluate and implement evidence-based healthcare at individual and organisational levels, and to become leaders in their respective fields.

*INSTITUTE OF LEADERSHIP (IOL) COURSESRCSI Bahrain offers two specialised courses in developing the leadership, management and educational capacity of practising health professionals, through IOL Dublin, which is hosted by the School of Postgraduate Studies and Research. They include an MSc in Healthcare Management, and an MSc in Safety & Quality in Healthcare Management.

MULTIPURPOSE LABORATORIESOur multipurpose laboratories give you the chance to apply what you have learned through theory, and bring to life your practical knowledge for both medical and nursing students. You will test experimental procedures related to biology, medicinal chemistry, anatomy and much more, also fostering your passion for research and developing your analytical skills which are essential in the medical field.

LIBRARY & LEARNING RESOURCES (LRC)Our beautifully designed library is open plan, circular, and a great place to spend your time studying. You can choose private study rooms, comfortable seating areas and flexible learning spaces. The LRC has over 12,000 print titles, a suite of e-resources, journals, databases, clinical digests, reference tools and software and health websites to ensure all possible scholarly work is available to you.

VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (VLE)Moodle, the VLE employed by the university, is a valuable resource for all registered students and alumni, which facilitates access to a wide variety of information: learning outcomes, lecture notes, class time-tables, multimedia tutorials, discussion forums, examination results, self-assessment tests and calendar of events for clubs and societies. This tool unifies the student body experience.

We are not afraid to say that our campus is one of the best you will see in the region, with state of the art lecture theatres, a Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC), fully serviced canteen, Centre for Student Success (CSS), Learning Resource Centre (LRC), sports and recreation centre (The HUB) and Halls Of Residence. We also have state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), with on-site support services, so that you are always connected when on campus.

CLINICAL SIMULATION CENTRE (CSC)We aim to give you the closest possible environment to the clinical one you will be working in when you graduate as a doctor or nurse, to build confidence through real-world scenarios. Our purpose-built centre is a 12-bed facility with designated areas for maternity, paediatrics, medicine, surgery and ICU. You interact with state of the art high-fidelity mannequins in live situations which are recorded digitally to allow you to reflect on and improve your own performance.

CENTRE FOR STUDENT SUCCESS (CSS)Designed by students, for students, our Centre for Student Success (CSS) offers comfortable and friendly spaces to sit with friends, study, access resources, chat to a tutor or get other support from the dedicated CSS team. The CSS looks after student welfare and wellbeing, helps with personal and professional development, and also acts as a drop-in learning centre. You can drop into our friendly CSS team for financial, accommodation, disability or family advice, or help with CV writing, extra curricular learning, workshops and any other guidance issues.

STUDENT LIFE

Key to a healthy student lifestyle is being active, which in turn helps you to bond with your fellow students and fosters a culture of teamwork throughout the university. Our sports and recreation Centre (The HUB) has recently had a $700,000 upgrade, and is the hub of student life at RCSI Bahrain. Aside from being the home of RCSI Bahrain’s sports teams, the purpose-built facility now features a 900 square metre multipurpose hall, as well as male and female gyms, personal trainers, fitness class rooms, a recreation and gaming area, eight TVs for campus event updates and live TV, and a popular Gloria Jean’s Coffee outlet. We also love our all-weather, FIFA-approved outdoor sports pitch, which we use for casual and competitive games of all kinds.

The HUB is supported by activities and events throughout the year such as the hugely successful Health and Fitness Week, annual Sports Day, Intramural Football Championships, and Open RCSI Bahrain Male & Female Basketball Championships.

This event in May marks the official culmination of the year’s student events calendar. Awards include Student’s Choice Event of the Year, Student’s Choice Club/Society of the Year, overall Club/Society of the Year and the recently-introduced Charity Award.

As well as providing top-level academic programmes, RCSI Bahrain is intent on offering a well-balanced and worthwhile student experience. As such, students are invited to join in a series of extra-curricular activities, from the annual Model United Nations Conference to our International Night and Clubs and Societies Day. There are more than 30 clubs and societies for you to choose from, as well as a vibrant Student Council, plus a range of sporting, social and other extra-curricular activities to suit our culturally diverse student body. HALLS OF RESIDENCE

RCSI Bahrain has a building of 20 two-bedroom apartments within a three minute walk from the campus. A member of RCSI Bahrain staff is appointed as house master of the residence and has a degree of pastoral responsibility for students. While many students have successfully arranged accommodation from abroad, some wait until they arrive, but you can be safe in the knowledge that accommodation is in plentiful supply. A list of details and contacts for external apartment blocks in the local area is available through the Student Services Office.
