and aromatic plants• Development of package and practices for the
production of organic food• Production of nucleus and breeder seed and
planting material • Development of post harvest technology for the
value addition• Development of cultivation practices of basmati
rice under organic farming system
Contd….
Production of fruits and vegetables under organic farming systemConservation of plant, animal fish and microbial biodiversityDevelopment of light weight farm machinery for the reduction of drudgery to farm women. Development of watersheds and sprinkler irrigationDevelopment of bio-intensive IPM modules.Development of agroforestry based cropping systemsDevelopment of floriculture as per the need of the state
FUTURE THRUST AREASFUTURE THRUST AREAS
Development of better livestock breeds for the higher milk production in the state.Strengthening of biotechnology unit for the over all development and monitoring of agriculture and livestocks. Production and testing the efficiency of bio-dieselEvaluation of local breeds of animals and development of diagnostic kits. MAJOR CONSTRAINTS OF AGRICULTURE MAJOR CONSTRAINTS OF AGRICULTURE IN UTTARANCHAL HILLS IN UTTARANCHAL HILLS
Small and scattered farm holdings which are difficult to access in many cases. Inadequate supply of improved seed and planting material. The soil of the sloppy fields are deficient in organic matter and in micronutrients in several areas.Lack of knowledge, initiative and use of new varieties of crops and new technologies of agricultureLack of awareness about seed and planting materials of vegetable crops
Contd…….
• Decline of old apple orchards which have become unproductive and uneconomic
• Loss of biodiversity of aromatic and medicinal plants and other high value herbs
• Lack of processing facilities for fruits and vegetables and plantation crops like tea and coffee
• Unplanned deforestation for wood, fuel and fodder leading to heavy soil erosion and water resources.
• Low milk yield of animals due to poor health, lack of nutritious diet and shortage of fodder during winter months.
Contd…….
• Lack of initiative for maintaining improved breeds of animals, non-existent A-I centres, non-availability of drugs and vaccines for sick animals
• Lack of market and processing facilities for animal products
• Lack of improved farm implements and tools• Performance of agricultural operations by ladies
who are already overloaded with other house jobs viz. cooking, cleaning, child care and collection of fuel and fodder
• Non-existent mandies to sell the agricultural produce and prevalence of middlemen in all types of trade
• Lack of credit and banking facilities.
NEW RESEARCH INITIATIVES
Technical Support to
Agri-Export Zones of Uttaranchal
LITCHI EXPORT ZONELITCHI EXPORT ZONE
Supply of superior quality of litchi planting material (> 1 lac plants) for area expansion in the State. Quantum jump in productivity of litchi from 1.2mt/ha in 1995-96 to 7.00 mt/ha in 2002-2003 as a result of effective transfer of production technology. Quality improvement of the crop - 200%Development of post-harvest technology for increasing shelf life of litchi fruits from 2 days to 25 days (sulphitation and acid treatment)Master Trainers Training to the officers and other technical personnels of the State Department of Horticulture. Research project on litchi, sponsored by APEDA is progressing well in the departments of Horticulture and Food Science and Technology.
