Small and scattered farm holdings which are difficult to access in many cases. Inadequate supply of improved seed and planting material.The soil of the sloppy fields are deficient in organic matter and in micronutrients in several areas.Lack of knowledge, initiative and use of new varieties of crops and new technologies of agricultureLack of awareness about seed and planting materials of vegetable crops

• Decline of old apple orchards which have become unproductive and uneconomic

• Loss of biodiversity of aromatic and medicinal plants and other high value herbs

• Lack of processing facilities for fruits and vegetables and plantation crops like tea and coffee

• Unplanned deforestation for wood, fuel and fodder leading to heavy soil erosion and water resources.

• Low milk yield of animals due to poor health, lack of nutritious diet and shortage of fodder during winter months.

Supply of superior quality of litchi planting material (> 1 lac plants) for area expansion in the State. Quantum jump in productivity of litchi from 1.2mt/ha in 1995-96 to 7.00 mt/ha in 2002-2003 as a result of effective transfer of production technology. Quality improvement of the crop - 200%Development of post-harvest technology for increasing shelf life of litchi fruits from 2 days to 25 days (sulphitation and acid treatment)Master Trainers Training to the officers and other technical personnels of the State Department of Horticulture. Research project on litchi, sponsored by APEDA is progressing well in the departments of Horticulture and Food Science and Technology.
