2012…No it’s not the name of a movie with a lame plot line and a low budget, based on improbable beliefs and human gullibility…And it’s not the Mayans and their calendar, nor is it some crazy guy totally convinced by this theory that looks more like a marketing hoax than a serious analyses, that could have predicted the incredible ascension and journey that the sport of wakeboarding is taking. If the world that we live in is apparently going to disappear, it’s a totally different story for the world that we know oh so well, the world of wakeboarding! I’m telling you, in 2012 we’re going to see some changes!First of all, a rain of cable parks will pour down on every stretch of water, a pack of shred-ders will take over even the most remote corners of the planet, and wakeboarders will divide the ocean in two. Nothing will be as it was, and Unleashed, on the same level as the Bible, the Koran or the Torah, will become a holy book from which the whole planet, wakeboards strapped to their feet, will draw strength, courage and faith….Humhum…. It seems that the editors got a bit carried away with this edit don’t you think? Yep, definitely! But on a more serious note, wakeboarding really is evolving amazingly, and we are all so stoked about it!Wishing you all an excellent year for 2012 full of ride, tricks, shred and fun. Happy New Year and happy reading everyone!

Unit RidersUnit is the brainchild of Paul Everest. Paul was given two talents in life: the love of ‘art’ and the love of ‘riding’. Living on the Gold Coast, Australia, in 2002 he looked for a way where he could combine his skills into one distinct entity … enter ‘Unit’. “There was no way I was going to go and get a regular 9-5 job,» says Paul. «My plan was to create the dopest action-sports brand of all time.»Starting out in his parents’ garage, he teamed up with his younger brother Ian. The two pooled together $600 start-up capital and bought a screen printing carousel. The brothers hustled their way up and down the east coast of Australia selling a handful of different tees from the boot of their car. The edgy and fresh designs on the Unit threads were an instant hit with store owners and fellow riders. Within a few months some of the best pros in the moto and BMX industries were supporting the Unit mo-vement. That’s the genius behind Unit - it has always focused on edgy and fresh design. «I have something to say with my brand; it’s not just a logo machine that creates a profit-and-loss statement for its shareholders,» says Paul. Today, Unit is supported by some of the best motocrossers, BMXers, moun-tain-bikers and musicians in the world. With its headquarters based on the Gold Coast, Australia, Unit has recently esta-blished its new international office in San Clemente, Califor-nia, USA. Unit is now sold in the world’s major action-sports retail stores. «Unit is all about the love of riding, innovative design and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in our sport,» explains Paul. “We have exciting plans for the future that go well beyond anything that’s ever been accomplished in our field.”www.unitriders.com

Home WatchesThey wanted to take that feeling with them, and share it with their friends. So they did, two brothers and a couple of t-shirts. That was 12 years ago, they were kids. They grew up: snowboarding, gra-phic design, travels, new friends and life’s experiences became in-gredients. A third brother joined them while time kept feeding that simple idea: to offer a piece of hOme to everyone, even when your journey leads you to strange places. Where and When became inspirations, and they knew they had to concentrate on the things you could take with you practically anywhere, because penguins can’t carry much on their backs. Yes that’s right, penguins. Somehow they got involved, and teddy bears too. Go figure. They got onboard along the journey from Switzer-land to Canada. Now they just stick around. But this is another story altogether…oh wait, it’s not:All this is a story about travelling in order to experience the mea-ning of the place we each choose to call hOme. It is a story about time and space, about small things and big ideas, and how going places affects you, even if it’s just down the street. The door is open, welcome hOme.www.whereishome.com

The Capture Camera ClipThe Capture Camera Clip knocks us out of our little stripey socks. What is it? It’s a heavy-duty aluminum clip that attaches your ca-mera to a bag strap or belt. How does it work? It has two adjustable screws that allow it to unhinge and clamp to bag straps and belts up to 1» wide. Just slide it on and screw it back to lock. Your ca-mera’s tripod mount attaches to the top plate of the Clip. To free your camera just hit the quick-release button. The Capture Camera Clip stays attached while your camera roams free.It takes less than a second to snap your shot and return your ca-mera to safety. The Capture Camera Clip is no hunk of scrap me-tal. It’s made out of heavy duty (yet lightweight) aluminium and can withstand 100+ lbs of pressure! It’s better than a camera strap because it doesn’t put pressure on your neck or shoulder. And it’s faster than carrying your camera in a bag because your gear isn’t buried.Yes, The Capture Camera Clip keeps your hands free and your camera close to your heart.www.photojojo.com

Skullcandy Files Suit Over Logo Infringement.Skullcandy, the recently publicly traded headphone company, filed suit against Skelanimals, a toy company that makes music accessories and miniature play toys. Skullcandy claims Skela-nimals’s logo, copyrighted in 2008 according to the company website, infringes on their trademarked logo. Skullcandy has used their logo since 2003, and claims in the suit filed in the U.S. Dis-trict Court, “The skull logos used by defendants … is likely to cause confusion … or to deceive the consuming public.” The Ske-lanimals logo appears on headphones, clothing, toys, and other miscellaneous items, possibly causing reason for confusion and potential destruction of Skullcandy’s logo.www.skelanimals.com

Liquid ForceThe Ultra is the most unique binding in our line and pe-rhaps the wake industry. Ar-guably the most supportive, yet flexible boot we have. No other boot conforms to the foot quite like the Ultra and no other boot in our line flexes as smoothly. The uni-que overlay provides a wrap-around fit and super smooth flex profile that gives a uni-que energy return not found on stitched bindings. www.liquidforce.com

JobeWith Jobe Rider Sjors van de Ke-rkhof’s approval on the “graphic”, it’s one of the most stable, fun, and easy to ride boards we have ever had the pleasure to design. The Va-nity has a long history and still pro-ves itself as being a top favorite for many of our team riders and fans. The “continuous rocker” makes the board fast, but still gives you a controlled “kick” off the wake. This year with a wider stance for more control and stability. Responsive and friendly shape for riders of all levels, whether you’re a pro or a novice you will feel like a pro on this ride. The four ‘’molded in’’ fins add a lot of stability during takeoff and landing. 0.5”/0.6”/0.7” deep “molded in” fins. 2.6”/2.7”/2.8” “Progressive continuous rocker”. www.jobesports.com

Stereo The progression of wakeskiing is all about going bigger and doing more advanced tricks. This was the motivating factor for us when developing our latest wakeski creation, The Remix. The Remix has an aggressive 3-stage rocker for tons of pop off the wake, yet it is the fastest ski in our line. The new WFD technology stiffens up the flex in key areas of the ski, while reducing critical swing weight. The reduced swing weight makes it easier to spin and gives you the ability to go bigger than any other wakeskier has ever done before. The Remix is equipped with dual fins, two at each tip and tail. The result is a more consistent grip, and a “locked-in” edge you can rely on. The center section of the ski has a rounded rail that gives a more forgiving edge tran-sition and adds durability on rails. The Remix is equipped with 0.7 inch replaceable park friendly hybrid fins.www.stereoskis.com

Axis Wake Research manufactures high performance, price point wakeboard boats and brings new levels of quality, per-formance and style to the entry-level boat market with unpa-ralleled pride of ownership.

Challenging the conventional wisdom that a high performan-ce wakeboard boat cannot be offered at a price point, Axis Wake Research has initiated a segment-shattering revolution. By carefully sourcing components and materials, employing in-house fabrication, lean manufacturing, unique production processes and strategic sales and marketing practices, Axis offers low cost to the customer without compromising qua-lity.

Performance and customer satisfaction levels are being raised by Axis in this market segment through an aggressive grassroots research and development campaign. These efforts revolve around the specific needs and wants of core riders and families alike. Or as the team at Axis Wake Research likes to say and the Axis name implies “We’re centered on you.”

The Axis Wake Research Team is a group of industry aces who respect tradition, but refuse to let it define them or the way they boat. They look past the typical limitations of wa-keboard boat building to new more efficient and functional ways of doing things. They are a team assembled specifically to design and build a big wake boat to exceed the expecta-tions of a price point buyer. The Axis movement is a com-pletely new way to research, design, build and market entry-level big wake boats and this is just the beginning.

WE HATE THE WORD CROSSOVER

Keith Lyman says, “The wake is all around world class! Great for ridin’ big or for just poppy wake to wake riding.” At the same time, this boat produces a nice flat table for slalom skiing. Translation: this boat is made for multi-discipline fun and at a mere 20 feet long, it’s easily towed and stowed. Fea-tures shared with the A22 include Skybox seating, Available Plug N Play ballast, colored LED under-seat illumination, the available ChillAX walk-through seat and more. The A20 has the capacity to hold 11 people and the wakes to satisfy the most dedicated riders. So yes, even though the recreational skier would be stoked on this wake, the A20 has been desi-gned for the wake sports.

Imagine a session at your favorite spot. Your buddies are on the boat and you’re gliding across smooth glass. As you cut in, you spot your take off. The wake is huge with a thick lip. This monster is going to launch you! But that’s the way it should be. You need to go higher and farther to land that new trick. The Epic 23v is designed to get you there. In our single minded goal of creating an Epic wake, how can we offer anything less than the biggest, baddest, fullest capacity ballast availa-ble in any boat on the market today? At a whopping 3,600 pounds, no other boat even comes close to the Epic 23v. So toss the fat sacks and ditch the lead weights. But wait! It’s not just about the size of the ballast. Due to the unique construction of the hull, we are able to put all that weight below deck in threeseparate tanks. That means more room for storage throughout the boat. The biggest ballast on the market couldn’t bemore convenient.Chris Anthony, the founder and lead designer for the 23v started out in Southern California with little more than a love of wake sports. Like most riders, Chris started wakeboarding off of a very smallI/O with a horrible wake and even worse holding speed. Every time he went out for a quick set, Chris would contemplate ways to im-prove the boats performance and handling. In the end he traded up to an older ski boat and his thoughts of boat evolution subsided while he worked his old little Malibu Skier to death. The real innovative spark was really ignited at a Canyon Lake Tour-nament where Chris was towedbehind a fully loaded older WakeSetter. “Wow, what a difference!” He thought, “Can weight and a slightly different style hull make THAT much difference?” It seemed to him that the improvements could be vast in scope and the subject needed some serious research.

After about a year of trying different add-ons to older boat hulls and toying mentally with different drag devices (like the WEDGE), Chris came to a decision to start with a completely new approach to hull design. So began the book buying, video watching and CAD simulations. After a year of re-search, Chris came up with a formula to balance ballasted weight and a hull that is designed to actually pull itself down into the water when in motion. Like an airplane wing creates lift when in motion, two separate sections of the Epic 23v’s hull actually drag it down into the water when it is in motion. He dubbed his creation as D.R.O.P. Zone technology (Dynamic Reduction of Pressure Zone) as it is actually two negative pressure or suction zones which aid in furthering hulldisplacement. Once the theory was in place it was time to test it in virtual land. With mouse in hand, he ran the design through weeks of simulations to see what tweaks would work and what would throw the drag effect into disarray. After all the testing had concluded the design was sent and Chris began building guides from the CAD data and started shaving foam in his driveway here in Mira Mesa California under a BIG silver tent.It took many months to finish the hull and hull mold before construction of the deck could begin. This gave Chris a lot of time to think while he was doing all the sanding, grinding and prep work necessary to finish the hull. During this time Chris came up with ideas on how to integrate audio into the transom of his boats, and ways tomake the 23v easier to maintain and clean. He also figured out an ingenious rudder package that actually used two rudders instead of just one. This tech-nology was inspired by modern jet propulsion technology and is designed by Chris to allow greater handling even with the massive 3,600lb ballast system filled. All of these innovations made it into the final 23v which first hit the water in the summer of 2005. Since then Chris has enjoyed riding behind his creation and implementing every bit of rider feedback into the 23v and the subse-quent models of Epics. Chris says of the 21v and 23v, “These boats are proof that any great idea like wakeboarding, and the boats that make it possible, can be made better with a bit of research and a whole lot of elbow grease”

This rather large weekend on the cable wakeboard calendar has always looked like an insane event for the sport. I have watched it from afar for many a year and heard the rave reviews from all the UK crew, each of them having returned with stories of rockstar like treatment and awesome riding experiences in front of crowds of thousands. I was rather keen to see it for myself.Lucky for me a space opened up on the commentary crew and Ber-nie Hinterberger, now putting his many years of experience as one of the best in the world to great use behind the scenes got me on board. I was booked on a plane and set to join the riders from across the world descending on Hamburg for the festivities. To set the scene, Extreme Playgrounds is a three stop tour based around BMX with Mountain Bike Slopestyle at stop one, Duisberg, wakeboarding joining the BMX’ers at this stop in Hamburg and then the grand finale taking place in Berlin with our four wheeled friends, the skateboard crew, getting in on the fun. In this sense, the Extreme Playgrounds tour is fairly unique. Three incredible lo-cations, or ‘Playgrounds’ as the tour name states, where BMX can be showcased in the best possible way and each venue also able to provide platforms for these other three sports to stand shoulder to shoulder alongside BMX giving the crowds and athletes alike one spectacular show. Add to this some very savvy marketing and PR that sees each stop broadcast live to the world across the web and the finals featured on live national German television. Oh, not for-getting the likes of Yellowcard, NOFX and Rise Against in the mix as a banging soundtrack to the action. All the world-class sporting prowess and stellar line-up of the wee-kend aside, lets get down to the really important stuff, the Friday night at Pearls. For those of you who have never been to Germany and are perhaps of the more modest persuasion, please skip forward a few paragraphs. For those who are still reading, I love Germa-ny’s abundance of city centre based night spot clusters of the sexual orientation when it comes to commerce. What I mean by this is a bucket load of strip clubs, sex shops and establishments where illicit behaviour is on show in all its glory. No point in hiding it! So, the Extreme Playgrounds crew fully embrace it by hiring afore mentioned exotic dancing club Pearls as a bit of pre party for the BMX’ers and boarders, guys and girls alike. There was a good amount of abuse and nudity coming from both the stage and the spectators with the many‘

Pearls Dollars’ that were being branded tantalisingly and handed out for entertainments sake only fuel-ling the festivities. The heavy morning always follows good times the night before and this was very much the case come Saturday. We arrived to the ‘arena like’ set-up of Pinneberg Cable, Hamburg with open practice on both water and ramps already underway. Qualifying for the boarding would kick off shortly and be tanta-mount to almost any final at any event I’ve ever paid witness such was the level of riding on show. First it was down to the boarders to impress and make there way through the first rounds where an unprece-dented number of entries were lined up ready to go. The wakeskating was where the big upsets lay with just four spots available in the final. It was to be Daniel Grant fronting against 2010 Playgrounds winner, Tariek Ghoniem, in their head to head that gave the judges the hardest call. With both schooling every part of the tight, ‘non stop’ course that Pinneberg offers Ghoniem only just came through on top to make the Sunday’s final alongside Hansen, Kissman and the youngster in the pack Moritz Thiele. Daniel Grant had his say however in the wakeboarding, the only rider to be competing in both strapped and strapless disciplines, making it through to the head to head knock-out stages. Stand outs of the qua-lifying were most definitely Felix Georgii and local boy Daniel Bagrowski. Georgii proving his skills were not restricted to just rail mastery and Bagrowski revelling in front of his home crowd shaking off any contest inexperience nerves to come good.Sunday would level the playing field yet again and after the official riders party in down town Ham-burg, where each athlete picked their head to head rival on the main stage, the line up was set. Tensions were running high come Sunday for both water-bound and two wheeled athletes. This atmosphere only heightened by the droves of people marching through the door ready for some of the best action sports and musical entertainment to be found anywhere. NOFX and Rise Against would see the late afternoon through as live national TV coverage of the finals commenced, before this however 14 wakeboarders battled it out, so that only 8 remained. No big shocks here other than the very tightly fought contest between Georgii and Van Straten, the Dutchman coming off worse only to have found friends across the live web stream and in Germany too, getting voted back in through the lucky loser system. Rocco Van Straten had this reprieve through a ‘text your favourite rider back into the contest’ set-up that Extreme Playgrounds has conceived, getting yet more interaction between the crowd and the sport. Only thing with this second chance of Rocco’s was that he would be pitted against the man of the mo-ment Freddy von Osten so the reprieve would seemingly be a short one. Rocco grabbed on to this life-line with both hands however and played his part in the biggest upset of any wakeboard contest on the world scene in 2011. No one would have thought that the 2010 champ and outright favourite would miss out on the finals least of all take a fall on the first straight of his run. It was just not to be for Freddy von Osten, and Rocco rode solid against the falls of Freddy to make the last four alongside Sofer, Fooshee & Guehrs. It was finals time in Hamburg and with it came the live TV with the one of the biggest crowds I’d ever seen at a wake event on the ground to make those watching the TV coverage realise what they were mis-sing. Wakeskate was up and yet another local hero found himself unable to retain the title for a second year. Tarik Ghoniem could not fight off the non stop flipping of Reed Hansen who’s first run was enough to take the win, or Moritz Thiele who stepped it up come his second run dropping a backside big spin to round off his weekend and take second. Jan Kissman unfortunately just couldn’t pull it together and while laying down some impressive moves, that higher end of technicality was missing and so was his podium finish. After the excitement and drama of the qualifying rounds and semi’s, it would be hard for the final showdown to continue with the same momentum. It seemed that the three riders against Tom Fooshee were also feeling inevitability knocking on their door because the American was a cut above in his first run and there was no catching him. Not wanting to take anything away from Guehrs, Van Straten or Sofer because these guys are world class but none of them really laid down what we know they can do. The Dutchman, Van Straten, with his third place finish had quite a turn around from being knocked out, to lucky loser and on to the podium so all in all the drama was non stop all weekend.

Seeing as the wakeboarding made up only half of what the weekend was about, we all just had to check out the BMX and it was the enigmatic charger that is Mark Webb who stole the show in Hamburg. The highlight of his performance, apart from taking the win most definitely being his leap of faith into a front flip from a rolling start off the top of the midi ramp on to the transition and out with teeth and shins still in tact. A never-before-seen manoeuvre from a guy that continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible on two wheels. The Telekom Extreme Playgrounds will have now been and gone and we all lie in wait for Europe’s ultimate action sports and music extravaganza to continue in 2012.

Let’s start out easy. How old are you and where are you from?I’m 23yrs old from Vernon BC Canada.

How did you get started in Wakeboarding? Who introduced you to the sport of wakeboarding? When I was like 12ish Wakeboarding in Canada was kinda blowing up and had a pretty badass image. Guys who I looked up to snowboarding locally all waked’ in the summers, and some of my school friends who’s parents had boats also got into wakeboarding. My friends Conner and Warren rented some boards and I was lucky enough to get out and try it out with them. I was hooked. From then on, I started progressing, took a couple lessons with Kris Killick and JD wakeboard school, linked up with a few other locals who were killin’ it , Matt Bibby, Jessie Schipfel, Mark Shalovelo, Steve Mckinley, and Chris Canuel. My parents finally got a boat after that, and helped me progress. Riding with those guys kinda molded my style and how I rode and progressed early on. Do you think that it’s easier or tougher to get involved in wake-boarding being from Canada? It’s tougher initially to get involved because we have soo many other sports that are «go to’s» before wakeboarding, and you don’t need a boat obviously. Living on the west coast in BC we’ve got surfing, ska-ting, mtn. biking, just to name a few of the summertime action sports that are really hyped, and not to mention all the other jock sports that are available. Wakeboarding seems to be pretty far down the list. We also don’t have that many cables so that adds to another reason why it’s not the most accessible sport. I was lucky enough growing up to have a ton of schools and camps to participate in, and show me what was good. It just seems like now a days people who have wake boats just get hammered and wake surf.

Where is your local spot to ride?Okanagan Lake, Vernon BC Canada

What is the wakeboard scene like in that area? When I started riding and getting into it, was amazing! soo many ri-ders pushing it, and I got to look up to them. It’s kinda dying out, and now people who do steroids and meat heads that wake surf just do it to show off their trophy wives. I’m trying to help change the overall image locally, winching stuff, park riding, and showing people there is more to it that needing a 100k boat. It’s cool to see some respect given from alot of the snow kids when they are exposed to the urban, and park side of the sport. I guess they can relate a bit. That’s where the sports going, and it needs to go, if the scene in the Okanagan area want’s to stay alive. There are a few cable proposals that might go through. If cables started popping up in my area, it would give the snow park rats something to do in the summer for sure. I would love to eventually give back to the sport by introducing kids to it. I wanna give everyone the ability to strap on a board and start riding. I’m broke as shit, trying to save up for a cable, or setup a 2 tower park. I wanna have something legit in place, with guys like Unit, Sesitec, and wake park project. They are absolutely legitimizing the sport, and what it will be for the future.

Page 50: Unleashed Wake Mag # 46 Jan/Feb 2012
Page 51: Unleashed Wake Mag # 46 Jan/Feb 2012

What’s your current set up that you rock on the water?Bill with Dannys boots, or Phoenix.

There is not that much cable in Canada, do you ride more wake boat than cable?Ya, definitely more boat for sure. Simply because of my up bringing, and the fact there isn’t really any cable to ride where I live. I’m really fortunate to have had my parents invest in a nice boat a few years back, and given the opportunity growing up to be surrounded by them. I winch a lot, and try to hit alot of urban stuff. I’m really focusing on that, and park riding where, and when I can. It just seems more rewarding to me, hitting a spot where noone would have thought to do.

Do you enjoy riding cable as much as riding boat?Oh definitely, probably even more than boat some days.

Do you usually ride with a group of buddies?I usually ride with Bibby, and Buskas when I’m home, or stay with Henshaw when I travel to Florida. It’s funny, I don’t live in the same area as alot of my riding buddies but when I’m around it’s usually Dylan Miller, Mark and Craig Mcmorris, Jono Boysen.

Do you have any other sports besides your wakeboarding?I snowboard all winter long, surf a bunch, and golf a bit too. I’m in charge of the Terrain Park(s) at Silver Star mtn. as my job in the winter, so it keeps me on the snow, hands on, and as busy as a beaver.

What is your favorite trick to do right now?Trying to hit stuff that shouldn’t be ridden behind a winch, and methods.

What motivates or influences you the most to learn new tricks?Watching skating, or snowboarding really motivates me.

What’s the hardest crash you have ever taken on a wakeboard?I’ve hit my head a few times, I landed on some rocks winching last year from a big winch drop on my side, that hurt. Most recently I got pretty busted off winching in Toronto trying to hit this re-direct bank with an elbow, and I came off a tiny bit to early, folded and rolled over the concrete. Man, I had alot of road rash, and damage.

Who are your favorite riders to watch and why?I love watching Randall, Danny, Henshaw, Rathy, Benny G, Gabe Lucas, Nico, and of course Raph Derome. My friends and riding buddies. I love to see everyone progress soo much. Josh Twelker is really sick too. I just like to see everyones different style, and respect for different aspects of their riding, and how they ride. It’s dope.

Page 52: Unleashed Wake Mag # 46 Jan/Feb 2012
Page 53: Unleashed Wake Mag # 46 Jan/Feb 2012

Do you have any travel plans this winter that you are looking forward to?I wish I could say YES, but I’m pretty broke in the winter, and need to work and save money for the summer. Wakeboarding is expensive as shit. If Mark McMorris needs a filmer, I might get to go on a few trips with him. Ride some pow on my snowboard, and hit a few of the mtns. That surround me.

Do you plan to come to europe and compet at famous comp like the Soo-ruz Wake’n’Country, FISE in France or Wake the Line in Germany?I would looooove to! I wanna make it happen this year soo bad. We’ll see how my wallet looks, and if I can afford it. You guys have an awesome scene out there! Super legit, and everyone is soo friendly who I’ve met. Can I stay with you?

For sure, we always help riders to come over here and help them to find a place to sleep for free and save money. We will defenetly arrange so-mething man! Has wakeboarding taken you to any places you never thought you would go?Damn dude, for sure. Like everyday. All over Canada, a bunch of the USA, Korea, Philippines, just to name a few. Hopefully Europe next season!

Are there any spots that you are hoping to ride at one day?Man, after watching Nico’s edit in Thailand, I really wanna go there to ride that park. Also Dylan has shown me alot of Europe cables, and I’ve gotta get there.

What would your ideal day be like?Either sunny, calm and warm day on the water, or bluebird skies shredding pow on my snowboard.

As of right now, what are your first five songs you listen to when you put on your headphones?J-Cole «Cole world» Drake «I’m on one» Rick Ross «Audio Meth» Big K.R.I.T «Money on the floor» Lil Wayne «Blunt Blowin» T.I. «Front Back»

Do you have any words of advice to those that are starting out?Have fun, biggest thing. Expose yourself to all aspects of the sport if you can, boat, cable, winch, kite, skate, and see what you like. Watch some old wake videos, take in everything you can. Learn where the sport has come from, progress yourself, and then figure out where you wanna take it.

Who would you like to thank? My parents, friends and family, girlfriend Katie. Sponsors, Nate and Risto @ Bilabong, Thomas @ Kicker, Murray Paul RY Jono and Nige @ Meri-dian distribution, Attridge boardshop, Silver Star Mtn. SBC Wake, Henshaw, Stevo, Mikey, Bibby, Buskas, Dylan, Killick. Everyone who’s helped me, been there, and still is. Sorry if I forgot anyone. Holla!

The leafs start to fall off the trees, the nights get freezing cold, the birds bail towards south europe… yes, its autumn in Germany. But its not the worst time of the year cause the Interboot tradeshow opened their gates again. And that means not just boring sailing ships and old, suit wearing people who are sear-ching for another possibility to spend millions of Euros on a Yacht, it means we could celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Interboot with the second Ca$h for Tricks Session, invented and organized by Mr. Nico von Lerchenfeld him-self. The young obstacle destroyer from south Germany invited his friends from all over the world for the second edition of this awesome event. The 8 dudes who got the honor to ride in this session and share 2500€ price money were: Nick Kauzner from Schwandorf (Germany). This kid is a little rail machine and one of the nicest guys of Germany´s next wakeboard generation. Felix Georgii , enough said. Everyone knows the skills of this guy from Wake the Line. Manu Rupp who killed it on the quaterpipe last year and showed like 500 beginners how to use a wakeboard on the System2.0 during the week of the Tradeshow. David Vervenne from Belgium. He was in a really good shape the whole year and couldn’t wait to show what he got. Matt Hoppe from Sweden. He got his own System2.0 in his backyard and slays kickers, he lands pretty much every trick you tell him to do. Tim ADG representing west Germany aka Langen-feld. No need to say that in Langenfeld there is almost more HDPE than water so Tim knows what rail riding is about. Tobi Michel aka Silvio aka Chillvio … I think loud and funny is the best description for that little smart ass… he was riding sick the whole season and deserved the spot he got instead of the Auzzi Sam Johns who couldn’t come over this year.

Last but not least the world famous Canadian who came all the way from Florida: Mr. Kevin Henshaw. I don’t know what he was more excited for: Ca$h for Tricks or Oktoberfest two days after the event. But what about Nico? He couldn’t join the session this time cause he still had issues with his knee and wanted to be 100% recovered before hitting the water again. So he commented the session with worlds best wakeboard host Clint Liddy (he was pretty happy when he checked the weather forecast after he almost drowned the year before).

The Nico von Lerchenfeld signature downrail, a spine Kicker, and a straight slider, all sponsored by Unit Parktech and Turncable, waited to get hit by the riders. At 4pm the warm-up session started, so the riders could get used to the obstacles and the massive crowd around the lake. At 5pm the session started and more than 2500 spectators where bouncing to the beats of DJ Crypts (Famous Deck Team). Mr. Liddy needed the help of the crowd to get the money into the riders piggy banks. Everyone was cheering and yelling to get more money out for their favorite riders.

The two 16 year old young guns Nick and «Chillvio» could earn good cash with a lot of style on the rails, same as Tim ADG and Manu Rupp who was pressing the shit out of Nicos Downrail. Manu, who could go home with the most money last year, couldn’t defend it and so it was his Slingshot team buddy David Vervenne who went to the afterparty with the most cash.He rode stylish through the whole session and the riders voted him for best kicker with a legit grabed bs 720.

Matt Hoppe was just killing it on the kicker. 900´s, KGB´s, Moby Dicks and big worms are just a couple of tricks he did during the event, as well as super stylish ts bs Crail 180s. He had so much fun there that he somehow totally forgot that there is a straight box and a downrail in the water as well… luckily there was no composition involved :D

Kevin showed sick az glides at the double sided kicker and went home with some cash for his steezy rail skills.

Felix’s piggy bank was pretty packed, too. No surprise with his bs360s on the downrail and a lot of good kicker tricks. Unlucky his shoulder popped out before the session ended and after a short visit in the hospi-tal we all cached up in the riders homebase to warm up for the party.

At last we can say that Ca$h for Tricks 2011 was one of the sickest and most crowded events this year and it would not be possible without the sponsors Nico organized ! So high-five and cheers to Monster Energy for the hot girls and yummy drinks, Clint Liddy for being such a legend, Sesitec for the best invention on planet earth, Unit Parktech and Turncable for the obstacles, Unleashed Wakemag and the Gap Magazin for the Media support, all the people that helped with the planning and realization an most importantly to Interboot who made all this possible. Good job guys!

Everyone had such a good time riding and partying and Nico is already planning for for Ca$h for Tricks 2012 with a bigger and even more crazy setup he said!Hope to see you there and have an awesome winter!!!! Peace out!

STZ - CanvassedApparel was new to the 2011 wake scene this season but it started off big the good ‘ole grassroots way. STZ sponsored a 28 meter rail at ECWP in Greenville, NC nicknamed «The Ark». The rail gained a lot of popularity due to its size, structure and colorful paint job. While attending one of the ECWP Summer Slider Series competitions, the STZ crew met Matt Deal, Jeff Mathis, Quinn Silvernale and young buck Sam Baker. After hanging out and riding all season, STZ was stoked to have the perfect squad to represent. The STZ crew, Quint Noble and Todd Clark, and the wake team decided to plan a late season team trip. In November 2011, when most people are putting up their wakeboards for the season’s end, the STZ Team decided to take a trip to Gravity Research compound in Eastman, GA. The five hour adventure was well worth it! Some advice from the STZ crew, don’t stop at an abandoned house on the side of the road in back-country Georgia for a potty break - we were promptly ran off by the police. Still, it was a great road trip! We could not have asked for better weather. 75 degrees in mid-November... perfect for late season shredding! The team met at GRC Friday, 11/11/11 and started off the weekend with a little game of «First Try Friday». We all called tricks for each other and without any warm-ups had to go for it. Quinn Silver-nale stomped his trick with ease. Check out the video on the website. The rest of the day was filled with fun riding and a sunset filming session. After riding, the crew hit the skate setup in the warehouse we camped in. The STZ crew had a blast skating, playing ping- pong, and late-night «nature walks» which turned into late-night light writing photos. Two more days of hitting it hard with filming, riding, and having fun flew by. Everyone had a great time and we could not have ask for a better team trip. They all pushed each other and were stoked to be riding together! FUN, the way wakeboarding should be! Each rider really pushed their limits and stuck some NEAT tricks. Yes, we said neat, we are bringing it back! Huge thanks to Wes Bearden and his family for having us! Also, a big thanks to Chelsea Warlick for coming along to take awesome photos and for being the only girl. Not many girls could put up with six bros, no showers, and only two Port-O-Jons! Check out the videos from the weekend at www.CanvassedApparel.com. You can also see more photos on the STZ - CanvassedApparel facebook page. What an amazing season, stoked to see what next season has in store!Happy Shredding -STZ crew

The 2011 WWA Wake Park World Cham-pionships hosted by Al Forsan International Sports Resort (wakeparkworlds.com) was the final stop of the WWA Wake Park World Series 2011 season and the 1st “cable” wa-keboard contest in the Middle-east. Wake Park Worlds was open to all ages and abi-lities. $50,000 USD was up for grabs, with $30,000 USD cash paid onsite allocated to this single contest and an additional $20,000 USD allocated to the World Series overall champions. There are places in this world where the cra-ziest ideas are imaginable and where every-thing is possible. Abu Dhabi is one of those places. It is for this reason that in the last two years, wakeboarding has really taken it true place in the Emirates. Firstly with the organization of a boat competition, and this year with the organization of the WWA cable world championships in the complex of Al Forsan. How could I describe a place like this apart from telling you that in the Emi-rates, immensity rhymes with normality. The complex contains two artificial lakes that are set up on pool liners with a cable on each side, as well as a system 2. But the cable is just the beginning of the experience as you will also find a karting track, a dune buggy circuit and two paint ball zones, all of which are spread out over almost 2 million square meters. Just Insane!

Page 64: Unleashed Wake Mag # 46 Jan/Feb 2012

And so it’s on the goofy cable that the 150 par-ticipating riders from over 40 countries in the world set out to compete for the title of WWA world champion 2011, under the well trained eyes of the WWA judges. After two days of training, the riders started to take their marks on this ultra tight cable that left no place for error. Indeed, with the minor fall you could end up on the banks or even in the public for the more aggressive riders. At this game, the German riders are the undispu-ted masters of the cable, proving once again that they are the best. With this in mind, Freddy Von Osten, Dominik Gührs, Nico Von Lecher-feld and Stephen Vollert went on to do amazing back-to-back runs. There was no time for rest, the tricks were barely landed that they were already onto the next, showing everyone that the physical condition of a rider has become absolutely necessary in competition. On Wed-nesday, the competition started and the heats were underway with a very high level of air tricks. Some of the most memorable moments were Tom Fooshee’s S-mob 5, Julian Cohen’s KGB olé and Freddy’s Wrapped KGB 5. There were plenty of amazing tricks to be seen in all categories: Further proving that wake-boarding is moving forward. On Thursday, the qualifications continued and the stress level got higher and higher. To calm their nerves and because there were no parties organized on site, the riders decided to head to the Creamfield Electro Festival. Once arrived, they headed directly to the VIP area and were treated to an amazing party where the Grey Goose flowed and the riders proceeded to the dance floor while Deadmou5 pumped out ban-ging tunes with special effects worthy of the biggest music festivals. The festival is over, its 5 in the morning, and you could see some of the best riders on the planet wondering around the streets of Yas Island trying to find their way back to their hotel rooms, so weird!

The next day was the beginning of Obstacle only, and even if the park was a little limited, the riders remin-ded us that there is no such thing as a bad park, only bad riders. It is at this precise moment that boat riders Shane Bonifay and Shawn Watson showed us their engagement and will power with the famous double half cab roll and other improbable tricks. As soon as the semi finals were underway, we were treated to a cat-walk of tricks, each more amazing than the next. Although there were a few surprises with the judging of this category, the best clearly stood out and it’s the young planker Daniel Grant that shredded the rails and to win hands-down the category of Pro Obstacle with the only 1080 of the competition. In Pro Men, the selection was impartial. The fun and games are over, to get into the semi finals the riders will need at least 2 mobs and a 720 on the kickers. In the semis, only the 16 best riders on the planet are left to battle out for the title of WWA world champion. During the finals we assisted to the return in force of the German riders on the world scene, including Dominik Guhrs who takes out the competition with an epic-out-of-this-world run without any fall, and also goes on to win the 2011 WWA Wake Park World Series overall championship. We saw some incredible sights during the four days of competition, and the 2012 edition of the world wa-keboarding championships in Abu Dhabi is already announced to be one of the best cable park contests in the world. Thank you again to the United Arab Emi-rates and Al Forsan resort for organizing this compe-tition, to Danielle Crawford for always being present and to all the riders who put on an incredible show.Enjoy this report and see you next year at Al Forsan for the 2012 WWA World championship.

You may have already heard of Teva, as the brand is becoming a big name in the wake scene. With their sponsorship of various professional wakeskaters and wakeboarders around the globe, their own Sesitec 2.0 wakeskate park in the Netherlands, a stylish shoe collection and very soon, a wakeskate movie, Teva is showing that it is a very solid player in the world of wake. Teva was founded in 1984 on the Colorado River and became an leading brand in the outdoor industry. Teva is very passionate about water sports and since its hum-ble beginnings, it has become a global outdoor action brand that enables everybody to experience the spirit of adventure in their own unique way. After all, the idea of ‘adventure’ is as individual as the person experiencing it. Still, everyone unders-tands the adrenaline rush, the dopamine high and the feeling of wonder. And these are exactly the moments that Teva lives for.Teva’s aquatic beginnings are the brand’s number one source of inspiration, and the brand is active in a huge number of water sports, including wake. Teva takes its slogan ‘Live Better Stories’ literally, and it’s always in the fast lane. Everything that Teva does bears the brand’s unmistakable character and its perfect combination of performance and style. Teva clearly stands out from the crowd. As a footwear brand with strong aquatic roots, it is only natural that Teva is devoted to wakeskating and offers quality wakeskate shoes. This footwear is specially made for wakeskating and perfectly suited to the needs of professionals. In May 2011, Teva opened its first wakeskate park in the Netherlands – the Teva Blue Line. The extensive park is equipped with absolutely everything you could ever need, inclu-ding the first ever European quarter pipe. This is a rarity which gives wakeskaters and wakeboarders the opportunity to innovate and take the sport to a new level. In April 2012, Teva will release the wakeskate film «Stompin Grounds». In this film, Matt Hooker, Matt Crowhurst, Kyle Walton and Geert Nielen will tell you all about the origins of the sport, what is going on right now and what the future holds for the world of wakeskating.
