The system allows you to input grades, communicate important information, and assist students with their business needs. Faculty will input semester grades for students and locate student information, such as e-mail addresses, from within MyUNLV. Students can use MyUNLV to access personal data, register for classes, check grades, apply for financial aid, and much more. MyUNLV uses the NSHE (Nevada System of Higher Education) ID number for identification. OIT’s IT Help Desk helps reset passwords but is not equipped at this time to help with the use of MyUNLV. Please check out the tutorials available within the system, or visit the website aboutmyunlv.unlv.edu for more information. If settings for your courses need adjustments, please consult with your department’s administrative staff or access the help tools available online.

WIRELESS TIPS

17

Page 18: UNLV Faculty & Staff Technology Guide for 2012-13

Please help us protect university data from theft and misuse.

Maintaining security requires everyone to take precautions to protect themselves as well as the institution.

1. Do not keep student data or social security numbers on your office desktop or laptop computer. Avoid keeping unnecessary data in department systems.

2. Secure your computer with a password. Be sure it has at least 8 CHARACTERS and 3 DIFFERENT CHARACTER TYPES.

3. Install antivirus and malware protection software on your office and personal computers.

4. Think before you click on e-mails, webpages, and other attractive Internet options. Do not comply with e-mail solicitations for your passwords.

5. Use Lotus Notes’ spam filter system, PROOFPOINT.

6. Keep your operating system patched with critical updates.

FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO ENSURE BETTER SECURITY

SECURITY

If you suspect any security problems or a breach, contact the IT Help Desk at 895-0777 or e-mail the OIT Information Security Office at [email protected].

18

Page 19: UNLV Faculty & Staff Technology Guide for 2012-13

OIT hosts and supports servers to store information for individuals, departments and the entire university. If your department wants to purchase its own servers, OIT offers consultation and may host new servers, if possible. Faculty and staff network storage needs are serviced by the Novell Netware system, also called the “CLUSTER.” It offers the following:

GROUP FILE STORAGESometimes you need to share files with colleagues in your department or with students. OIT offers group accounts where members of a team can share documents like forms, spreadsheets, policies and procedures. Contact the IT Help Desk at 895-0777 for more information.

PERSONAL FILE STORAGENetwork storage for your files is available through your Novell account. If you store files on your network drive, they can be accessed on or off campus. Use your (H:\) drive on your UNLV computer, or log in via the web at files.nevada.edu.

SERVERS & FILE STORAGE

BACK UPSOIT can restore deleted or overwritten files hosted on the Novell Netware system because we keep back ups for up to 30 days. Just call the IT Help Desk if you need a file recovered. Or, do it yourself by right-clicking in the folder where you deleted the file and click SALVAGE. As a best practice, OIT recommends that you also keep a local backup copy of very important files on a CD or USB drive.
