Malachy McCourt’s memoir offers a delightful childhood misconception of the Hail Mary. I am sure we can all look back and discover similar howlers in the development of our own faith and prayer life as Catholics. Perhaps a greater problem now as adults is not a misunderstanding of various prayer formulae and their theological meaning but an over- familiarity with them. This is certainly true in the case of the most common of all the Christian prayers: the Lord’s Prayer. A quick calculation of saying this prayer over many years might have us proclaiming the Kingdom of God coming thousands of times. This truly intimate conversation with God has over time become a babble of words, devoid of feeling and empty of intention. When we so causally use these words either at mass or in our daily morning and evening prayer, are we aware that they are the channel of communication with the most powerful and important person in our lives whom we run the risk of taking for granted. The famous art critic and Benedictine nun, Sister Wendy Beckett, says that prayer is actually the act of standing unprotected before God, an act that should leave us exhausted and elated. Communication with God should never be commonplace or boring. Today Abraham provides a fascinating example of how to argue with God. One could think also of the humorous but honest prayers of Tevye in The Fiddler on the Roof or of St Theresa of Avila’s encouragement to ‘pray with holy daring’. Luke (11:1-13) emphasizes simple, brief, confident prayer –keep asking, but remember the kind Father to whom you are praying. Luke’s prayer is followed by two parables (the friend at midnight and the caring parent responding to a child’s need). They are linked by the saying about knocking and asking. Bishop Tom Wright, in his commentary on Luke, notes very well that to call upon the liberating God of the Exodus was to invoke ‘the God whose Kingdom was bringing bread for the hungry, forgiveness for the sinner, and deliverance from the powers of darkness’. At the same time, we must imitate the graciousness of God in forgiving not only one another but even our enemies. Luke reminds his audience of the lessons which Israel should have learned in the desert – to think of God as loving Father but also to fear Him and hold His name in veneration, to believe that all good and necessary gifts come from Him. In brief, Luke’s prayer is not merely a loosely connected list of petitions but a motivational prayer for those who are following Jesus on his journey to Jerusalem through death to glory. Fr. Peter Dillon

ALTERED LITURGICAL SCHEDULE Over the next three months our parishes will be operating with only three of the usual four priests. This is due to a combination of factors including World Youth Day, vacation leave, professional development studies and medical treatment. It has therefore been decided by the pastoral team to offer the Saturday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Reconciliation and Benediction on the first Saturday of each month, rather than every Saturday. This will begin August 6

th. Fortunately we have been able to get some assistance for Sunday Masses from other

priests in the Archdiocese, but there may be some changes to week day Liturgies. We apologise for this disruption and hope that other changes may not be required by this unplanned situation.

ALL MUSICIANS AND LITURGISTS: The long awaited Catholic Music Worship Book II is now available and the Parish has managed to secure copies for each of the Mass centres. To launch this resource we have booked a date with Liturgy Brisbane for Jenny O’Brien from Adelaide, who is on the National Liturgical Music Board and was involved in the compilation of the new music resource, to conduct a workshop, along with Sr Ilsa Neicenieks who also works with Jenny in the Adelaide Diocese. This is a wonderful opportunity for musicians and those who are interested in liturgical music to attend this workshop. It will be held in St Joseph’s Church North Ipswich on Tuesday 26th July from 6pm to 9pm with a break for supper. We will definitely need numbers by Monday 25th July. Please phone 3281 2133.

BAPTISMAL CELEBRATION: This weekend we welcome three young people through the Sacrament of Baptism. Silas,(7) Amelie,(8) and Sahara(9) have been preparing for their baptism for the past two months and are very excited about becoming a member of this faith community. We congratulate them in taking this step and ask that you pray for these children as they begin their faith journey.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULT ENQUIRIES: Recently we have had a few enquiries from adults who have expressed an interest in becoming Catholic. Therefore we will be offering the opportunity for adults to attend an Enquiry Night which will focus on the process of the journey to becoming a member of the Catholic faith. If you know of anyone who has made such an enquiry or perhaps someone who is waiting for you to pop the question and plant a seed of faith please encourage them to phone Bernadette McAndrew at the Parish Office on 3281 2133 to register their interest. The date for the Enquiry night will be set very shortly so keep an eye on the newsletter.

ST. JOSEPH’S FETE—SUNDAY, 7TH AUGUST FROM 9.30AM PLEASE NOTE: Because of the earlier start time this year,

there will be NO 9.30am MASS on that day (Sunday, 7th August)

* 7.30am MASS WILL TAKE PLACE AS USUAL*

CAN YOU HELP? A lady at North Ipswich who is unable to come to Mass, would really appreciate it if someone could bring Communion to her at home (Lowry St, North Ipswich). Please call Maree (3281 2133) if you are willing and able to help her. Thank you.

Our parish will conduct the Catholic Mission Church Appeal on July 30-31, 2016

It is fascinating to consider how Jesus taught His disciples the Our Father; it is hard to comprehend that a prayer which is now universally recited was once being shared for the first time. Were they all sitting down or were some of them standing around, thinking about what they were going to have for lunch? Did it take them long to remember all the words? And was there a method to the way Jesus structured the

prayer? The way in which people learn and are taught is worth considering because it is that process which dominates much of the appeal campaign for Catholic Mission this year. In Cambodia, nuns like Sr Eulie are coming up with innovative ways to educate children who might otherwise miss out. And just as we join together in saying this prayer, so too we unite by giving to the universal work of the Church, to the best of our capacity. In anticipation, we thank you for giving so that others might receive their “daily bread” and also for helping ensure that “thy kingdom comes” and that “thy will” is done. David McGovern, Diocesan Director Archdiocese of Brisbane

TALKABOUT: The Talkabout team is preparing the August issue. To keep you informed we need your contributions. Please email articles, news and photographs to Robyn at [email protected] or leave at the Parish Office. Or if you don’t feel comfortable writing, talk to us and we’ll write the article with you. Articles by 12th August would be appreciated. Thank You. ONLINE FAITH DISCUSSION GROUP: There are currently two of us participating in an online faith discussion group, and we would love to have a couple more people join us. It is a private online forum with only those who contribute able to access the site. You do not need to have great computer skills to join in - just click on the link and write what you think. You can do it anytime that suits. The topics for the first 6 months have been based on Fr Richard Rohr's daily meditations which invite us to discover, experience, and participate in the foundation of our existence - Love (https://cac.org/). Many of the topics link with the Year of Mercy. For further information, please contact Laura Morrison (North Ipswich) at [email protected] READINGS FOR MASS: 23/24 July: Gen 18: 20-32; Col 2: 12-14; Lk 11: 1-13 30/31 July: Eccl 1: 2, 2: 21-23; Col 3: 1-5, 9-11; Lk 12: 13-21

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION PROGRAM FOR CONFIRMATION: During the Masses throughout the weekend we will formally enrol the children who have indicated they wish to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. Each week the children, along with their families, will attend Mass to receive either a special blessing or presentation. At all of the Masses next week the children will be asking members of the parish community to accept a Prayer Card from them, asking you to pray for them during their preparation. Please make them feel welcomed by accepting this card. ALTAR SERVERS’ UPDATE: Thank you to the number of primary schooled aged children who attended the first training session for Altar serving in St Mary’s. Your next training date will be Wednesday 27
