ENOUGH IS ENOUGH: The residents from ward 17 say they have tolerated enough and they have had enough.

WE WANT JOBS: Striking residents from ward 17 say they want to be the ones picking up li er on their own streets, not some strangers whom they do not even know.

Residents say they want jobsNkhensani Nkhwashu- [email protected]

NKOWANKOWA residents under ward 17 closed the municipal storeroom in Nkowankowa section A since Tuesday demanding the removal of the newly appointed staff.

The strike, which was dominated by the youth, comes after more than 20 people were appointed to work on a project which they believe is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

The residents said they feel undermined because people from other places were hired to come pick litter in their streets while they sit at home.

"Local people are unemployed while they hire people who do not even reside in our area. Recently there was a project in ward

19 and when we approached them for jobs we were told to go to ward 17. We have consulted with our ward councillor but she is not helping," said Nicholas Mashimbye who spoke on behalf of the striking residents.

They said the councillor told them she was not informed on the hiring of the new people. When contacted, ward 17 councillor Doreen Mhlarhi said councillors are not involved in selection process of workers who were hired after submitting their CV's. "There are offi cials who are responsible for doing that," she said.

Greater Tzaneen spokesperson, Neville Ndlala said it was not an EPWP project. "We appointed a contractor and that contractor is the one responsible for hiring their own people," he said.

It is alleged that corruption in the hiring

process is the main factor why most of them are unemployed. "They hire their girlfriends and relatives, nepotism is very much alive here. If you are a woman and you want a job, then it means you must sleep your way to the top," said one angry resident who wished to remain anonymous.

A team leader whom they only identifi ed as a Mr Shimusa is said to have told the striking residents that they are stupid and that is the reason they will not get jobs.

"We don't want them anymore, they must give the jobs to the rightful people, 60% of the people should from ward 17. Their supervisor is corrupt, he hired his wife and brother-in law," said the angry residents.

By the time of going to press the striking residents were waiting for a response from GTM.

MOTORISTS using the Phalaborwa/Gravelotte road over the next few months must prepare themselves for lengthy stop-and-go’s after the contractor appointed to resurface and upgrade the road started on Monday.

That is the bad news. The good news is that this treacherous road will now eventually be repaired and this will hopefully lead to less accidents and a safer trip between Phalaborwa and Gravelotte.

The President of the Phalaborwa Chamber of Commerce, Manie Kriel, on Monday confi rmed that the contractor was on site and stop-and-go’s introduced. The Chamber was instrumental in joining forces with a special Forum to negotiate with Sanral on the urgent repair work required to upgrade the road.

“The stop-and-go’s will be frustrating for motorists, but it is essential and necessary to upgrade this road,” Kriel said. He also confi rmed that the Forum is putting pressure on Sanral to also repair and upgrade the Phalaborwa/Mica road.

“Our access roads are not only critical to the economy of this area, but also poses a massive safety risk for all motorists,” Kriel added.

Major delays on roads

NEW ROAD: Phalaborwa and Gravelo e residents can look forward to a new road between the two towns once the frustra on of stop and go roadworks have been nego ated.

Man makes nameGROWING up in the rural Bolobedu, Ngwako Letter Serepe has always been an ambitious child who knew what he wanted.

Ngwako was born in Ga-Sedibeng as the fourth child of Gladys and Albert Serepe. He has two sisters and one brother, unfortunately one of his sisters has since passed on.

His ambition has seen him move from being that boy who could not afford university fees to starting his own company.

He started his primary education at Sehonwe Primary school in 1994 and moved to Rammila Secondary School which only caters for Grade 8-10 learners in 2000.

He fi nished his grade 12 at Tseana Senior Secondary School at Ga-Mamaila in 2005.

His leadership role during his high school days included being the SRC secretary and a class prefect.

His mother could not afford to pay for his tertiary education and he had to go stay with his brother in Tembisa while doing his license.

The thought of not furthering his education did not sit well

with him so he went out there and marketed himself. He still remembers how he approached MSC Business College after envying students who were going to class while he was taking a walk. "As I walked passed this other shop, I saw a college sign clearly marked. I was like a kid in a candy shop. I walked hurriedly in that direction until a door before me which I fi gured was the entrance. While enquiring about a qualifi cation I was interested in, I told the lady who was helping me that there was no way I would be able to afford anything there. It turned out I was at the right place, at the right time. I was offered a bursary," he said.

Ngwako enrolled for a certifi cate in Public Relation Management from 2006-2007. In May last year he started his own company, Tembisa On Record, a marketing agency which specialises in brand activation, free-sample distribution, in-store promotions, fl yer distributions, events, conferences, exhibitions, product launches and social media.

AMBITIOUS: Founder and Head Marketer for Tembisa On Record, Ngwako Le er Serepe. His ambi on landed him a bursary.

THE Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated colouring books and baby care kits to Noah’s Ark Children’s Home at a farm just outside Tzaneen last Thursday.

The donations which included blankets and colouring books hand made by young women from the United State of America, babies’ clothes and basic toiletries were handed to the children’s home founder, Sylvie Delsouiller by members of the church led by Elder Steven and Sister Loretta Campell.

The Campells, who are elderly church missionaries from the USA, say the donation is part of the church’s humanitarian programme.

According to Delsouiller, Noah’s Ark is home to 35 children aged from a few month to 16 years. The home depends on generous donations from Sun Bake, Peppadew, Department of Social Development and individual donors.

SAVE WATERSave water before

you need it. Take shorter showers.

Turn the water off while brushing teeth. Don't leave water running while rinsing dishes.

If you accidentally drop ice cubes, don't throw them in the sink, place them in a pot plant instead.

Simple things we can do to save water in the yard: Step on the lawn. If the grass springs back, it doesn't need water. Longer grass promotes a more drought-resistant lawn, reduced evaporation and fewer weeds. Plan to water the lawn in the early morning or evening to beat daytime evaporation. Remove weeds as soon as they spring up. Weeds are notorious water thieves. Respect water restrictions, reduce your use.

THE Limpopo Provincial Government offi cially handed over a house to a destitute family at Finale village in Sekororo on Friday.

A four roomed modern house was handed over to the Komane family by MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Jerry Ndou on behalf of the Premier Stanley Mathabatha.

Francina Getrude Komane (56) and her two daughters Lindiwe and Precious Komane aged 11 and 13 years respectively have been staying in a tent after their one room mud house was burned down in January.

The family did not own any furniture and all cooking utensils were kept on the fl oor and their clothes were packed inside plastic bags.

MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs, Makoma Makhurupetje said the family’s plight was brought to her department’s attention which managed to build a house for the family courtesy of Zorha Khan Developers.

Zorha Khan also bought beds and curtains for the house whilst the Mayor of Maruleng Municipality, Pule Mafologela bought a television, couches and a stove. The family also received groceries and other household needs from various donors.

The unemployed mother struggled to hold back her tears of joy as she accepted the keys to her new house. “ I am very happy, I don’t know how to thank you,” said Komane.

This genotype by sequencing approach (GBS) is a novel approach in SA and is a new way of utilising advanced genetics to further the industry.

2) Disease Diagnostics by means of advanced quantitative PCR technology. This qPCR disease screening is completed and iHelix is fast tracking their SANAS accreditation. This will enable iHelix to provide certifi cation on both notifi able and controlled diseases endemic to the area as well as other animal diseases.

3) CE sequencing where they specialise in parentage assignments and DNA fi ngerprinting of animals. This work is being done on the nucleic genomic DNA of the animals and not the commonly used mitochondrial DNA of animals. Mitochondrial DNA from e.g. hair samples only have the mother compliment of DNA which makes parentage assignments challenging. More so, these commercial kits for assigning/and or confi rming parentage in the game industry relies on markers

compiled from animal species with known genomes such as bovine, ovine or avian, but not related to game. Here at iHelix we work solely on the animals’ in question individual genomic (nucleic) DNA and present a specie specifi c marker analyses for both parentage and individual fi ngerprinting. In so doing, customers have real time access to the raw data themselves and are informed directly on how the assignments happen. This increases confi dence in results, minimises errors and time delays.

Most recently iHelix successfully used this in house developed DNA technology to match isolated Rhino horn DNA to a variety of other biological specimens sampled from the animal. They developed a technique that can make use of biopsy darts, hair roots, tissue samples, blood samples and mouth swabs and matched it with fi ngerprint accuracy to the rhino horn DNA with as much as 400 markers per animal. This has far reaching implications as this

enables iHelix to setup a fi ngerprinting database of all animals tested at the facility.

The identity of any animal can be verifi ed within 24-48hrs from sampling by means of something as simple as a mouth swab. This will also be of great use at animal auctions to identify that the individual animal from seller en-route to auction, sold and upon arrival at purchasers farm, is indeed the same animal with the same identity. More so, insurers of exotic game can make use of this service to accurately verify the identity of an animal.

iHelix team consist of members who have qualifi cations and vast industry experience in the fi eld of genetics that include 5 years instrument & chemistry implementation experience of DNA Automated robotics Crime Index lines with South African Police Forensics Units in Pretoria & Cape Town and 3 years experience in Bioinformatics at Onderstepoort BTP. Tennis onnie kook

REVUE: Lumé Jacobs and James Vorster in their costumes for the produc on “Good is the new bad”.

THEY sing, they dance and they will defi nitely bedazzle you.WHAT am I talking about, you ask?

Ben Vorster High School is proud to present their production "Good is the new bad"!

The revue will be performed on April 12 to April 14 and it will be bigger and better than ever.

Letaba Herald spoke to the organizer, René Mynhardt, to fi nd out what the community can look forward to.

This year they did it a little bit differently and asked the kids, who will be the stars of the night, what they would like to do.

With so many great ideas and suggestions, they have created something truly unique that is relevant in the lives of teenagers.

With a group of almost 300 diverse children in the play, one can only imagine how thrilling it will be.

See, King Beast and Queen Belle marry and unite all the kingdoms into the United States of Auradon, where they are elected the leaders of the new idyllic kingdom. All of the villains, sidekicks, and accomplices are forced, after their defeat, to live imprisoned. on the Isle of the Lost, a

forbidden island surrounded by a magical barrier that inhibits magic and escape.

Prince Ben, the teenage son of King Adam and Queen Belle, is about to ascend the throne.

His fi rst offi cial proclamation offers a chance for four selected trouble-making teenage children of villains from the Isle of the Lost, to live among them in Auradon and attend Auradon Prep. He chose: Carlos, son of Cruella De Vil; Jay, son of Jafar; Evie, daughter of The Evil Queen; and Mal, daughter of Malefi cent. ("Rotten to the Core")Adam is at fi rst unwilling to go with it, because their parents commited unspeakable crimes.

Malefi cent sends the four children to a school with iconic heroes and they are under intense pressure to regain the power that once belonged to them.

Can they do it?Be sure to get your tickets for

"Good is the new bad" to fi nd out!

Tickets are available at Ben Vorster High School.

April 14 will be a barnyard style gala night and anyone interested can phone René Mynhardt on 079 376 7485.
