Unthink

Unthink is the new social network on the block. The company has already made it pretty clear it wants to kick Facebook and Google+ out of the social media realm. They have made videos heavily criticizing the two social media giants saying “It’s FU time”

Unthink preaches empowerment and encourages people to take control of their own destinies. They say their not just another social network site, they’re a social revolution.

Unthink opened up its doors a few days ago, allowing in its first round of beta testers. The company sees itself as a more open, more honest form of social networking – one where it’s users are the owners of their data, and not the product being sold to advertisers.

On its website, Unthink says it will work with brands that are “forward-thinking, socially responsible, and environmentally conscious.” Users can either choose brands they feel some affinity with to feature on their profile pages, dubbed as “iEndorse”, or pay a $2 annual fee.

Taking down Facebook is the core of Unthink’s marketing campaign. In fact, the majority of Unthink’s message is about what it is not: it’s not another social network, it’s a social revolution. Unthinkers are not users, they’re owners. Unthink is not in control, you are. It even has its own manifesto and deed.

On Facebook, your personal data, your posts, your likes – in short, all your social networking activity – is used to provide advertisers with a way to directly target precise demographics. Some may call it genius, but for others it feels exploitive.

Upon signing up for Unthink, you’re offered an app that will export your photos and videos from Facebook. You’re also asked to fill out the standard social networking questions (name, date of birth, gender, etc.) and are then directed to your own personal profile page.

If you want to keep up with Unthink, you can follow the company on Twitter @iunthink

The site’s design is clean and well-organized. Where Facebook’s dominant colour is blue, Unthink uses a calming green.
