OVERVIEW

The processes and steps initiated under the “Make in India” policy would result in bringing 75-80 % of the procurement by value through Indian vendors, double the indigenous content in the procurement from the current levels of about 35% to nearly 70%, result in development of certain key identified technologies and products, and take volume of defence exports to USD 1 billion in five years and USD 3 billion in next 10 years. This will also create immense direct employment opportunity for young engineers and technicians.

The new initiative is planned to create a vibrant Defence Industrial Base with focus on the private industry. This would enable utilisation as well as consolidation of the national manufacturing base in areas such as shipbuilding, engineering and metallurgy, automotive, electronics, avionics, telecommunication etc. Considering the available synergies between civil and defence technology applications, and the existing capability of Indian private industry, fostering a constructive, long term partnership is considered not just sound economic option but a strategic imperative to minimise dependence on foreign vendors.

MSME DEFEXPO 2015 is the premier Defence & Security Exhibition in India facilitating business opportunities and interaction in this vital sector. MSME DEFEXPO 2015 brings the Indian Defence and Security sector together on a single platform. This exhibition provides the ideal platform for MSME companies to exhibit their products/offerings/ innovations to the target audience that includes key authorities from the defence and security industry, government and defence and para-military officials from across India, and the opportunity to network with the relevant players on a strategic level. MSME Defexpo 2015 will also focus on inviting defence and security officers from neighboring countries to enable a pan-South Asian presence to this event.

There has been a push to increase the outsourcing from the DPSUs and the OFB to Indian industry, preferably, MSME's. It has been planned to set-up a two way communication system with private industry through regular interaction, information exchange and facilitation in areas of licensing, test facilities, discharge of offsets etc.

The result is already being seen where in the recent years, many Indian private industries have already been involved in a small way with several defence projects. These are Integrated Materiel Management Online System (IMMOLS), Integrated Air Defence Command and control system (IACCS) Tactical Communication System (TCS), Battlefield Management Systems (BMS) and Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles (FICV).

Awarding of major projects under 'Make' category to Indian private industries is a new beginning in Indian defence industrialisation.
