UNV’s vision is a world where volunteerism is recognized, within societies, as a way for all people and countries to achieve peace and development through the

simultaneous eradication of poverty and significant reduction of inequalities and exclusion.

UNV is the only UN entity with capacity to mobilize large numbers of people, with appropriately assessed skills and expertise, as volunteers for field-based United Nations programmes and projects, enhanced by South-South and triangular cooperation.

Volunteerism enables participation beyond political dialogue and translates into a stronger role for people’s engagement in their societies.

Young volunteers are both a major resource for development and key agents for social and economic transformation and technological innovation.

The volunteer sector can build on new opportunities like greater access to global markets, wider information and knowledge networks and new technologies and social media to generate and share knowledge, including reaching marginalized groups and remote communities.

UNV tailors responsive and innovative solutions with international, national and online volunteers to meet development challenges of partners in countries across the world.

UNV integrates volunteerism within UN entities’ programming through the implementation of UNV-UN partner joint programmes/projects in four priority areas: youth; peace building; basic social services; and community resilience for environment and disaster risk reduction.

UNV effectively supports UN Volunteers, including through training and learning, to improve their individual experience.
