Greetings all,

Our board of directors had an online board meeting on May 4, 2013. It was attended by our

most of our executive and board as well as four observers.

However, two hours is just not enough time to thoroughly discuss all the issues that need to be

discussed. Our next online meeting will be Saturday, June 1.

Nominations for election of the Executive and Board of Directors of the United Ostomy Asso-

ciation of Canada Inc for the upcoming term closed effective April 15, 2013.

There were not sufficient applications received to fill all positions, and not enough to require

the holding of an election. In accordance with established UOAC procedures the above

named persons will be presented by the Nomination and Election chair to the Assembly for

acceptance to his / her position as members of the Board of Directors by acclamation.

The board of directors will meet in person in Halifax on August 16, the day before the Chap-

ter Information Session (CIS), and attend the CIS on August 17 and meet again the afternoon

after the Annual General Meeting on August 18, 2013. The Ostomy Halifax chapter is going

to have a great get together, see more information later on in this UOAConnection!

The Canada-Not-for-Profit Corporation Act provides federal not-for-profit corporations with a

new set of rules that are modern, flexible and better suited to the needs of today`s not-for-

profit sector. Our by-laws committee is working hard to have new by-laws ready for a vote at

the AGM in Halifax in 2013. We have set up a not-for-profit task force with key members

from our past leadership as well as current chapter presidents. Details have been sent to chap-

ter presidents and we had our further online meetings on April 10th. Another one is sched-

uled for May 24th.

Three important decisions have been made by the UOAC Board as recommended by the task force and I am hopeful that the

task force is able to agree on three more key points and bring those to the board meeting on June 1st so that we can present the

results at the annual general meeting in Halifax on August 18th.

Our District Support Services group has presented to the UOAC Board the first draft copy of the CHAPTER Outreach SUPPORT

Services Manual and was accepted by the board. The process of defining and changing the manual will continue over the next year and

will ultimately realign our important outreach support with the changing demographics in Canada and bring us closer to achieving the

vision presented in our Strategic plan. Thanks to Roger Ivol, Les Kehoe and Di Bracken for your hard work on this process.

The SASO Support Group brochure is now available from UOAC National Office.

A copy has been mailed to all chapter presidents. To obtain more copies of the brochure for your chapter please contact the office ei-

ther by telephone or email. Thank you to Betty Woolridge and Ann Ivol for your work on producing and distributing this brochure.

The UOAC acknowledges that Revenue Canada has a Disability Tax Credit but does not provide recommendation if individuals

should apply or not. The UOAC continues to maintain this policy. We have noted that Form T2201has been clarified as to what an

inordinate amount of time means.

Bladder Cancer Canada is hosting a patient conference in Toronto on May 25. UOAC has agreed to set up a booth at this conferencewith Ann and Roger Ivol as well as John Molnar representing UOAC. It will be held at the International Centre, Mississauga. We

On May 25, Lakeside Medicine Centre is hosting their 7th Annual Ostomy Education Day at Coast Capri Hotel, 1171 Harvey Ave-

nue, Kelowna, BC from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. We urge all interested people in the area to attend and help raise funds for the UOAC

Ostomy Youth Camp. See more information in this UOAConnection or on our blog.

Our friends to the south of us, the United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA), have a conference in 2013 and are inviting their

Canadian friends to come join them in Jacksonville, Florida. The theme this year is "Bridge to Acceptance". Registration fees and hotel

rooms are very reasonably priced.

Activities start on August 7th and continue through August 10th. To find out more information or to register for the 2013 National

Our next biennial conference will be in St. John's Newfoundland in 2014.

Dates are July 31 to August 2. Our conference chair is Delilah Guy and the St. John's and Gander chapters are working together to put

on a great conference. We hope to see you all there and take some time to tour around the "Rock" and enjoy the unique experience

that is Newfoundland.

A big thank you to the mayor of St. John`s NL, Dennis O'Keefe, who approved a cheque from the city for a donation of $750 to go to

the conference. We were surprised to see that amount after the last Provincial budget cut millions of dollars to the cities.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual General Meeting of Member Chapters of the United Ostomy Association

of Canada Inc. will be held at the Lord Nelson Hotel, 1515 South Park Street, Halifax, NS on Sunday August 18, 2013

between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and noon for the following purpose:

1. To receive the financial statement of the United Ostomy Association of Canada Inc. for the year ending March 31,

2013 together with the Auditors Report thereon.;

2. To appoint auditors for the period for the ensuring year and to authorize the Directors to fix the remuneration of the

Auditors.;

3. To review and approve Form 4031 Article of Continuance (transition);

4. To elect President, Vice President, Secretary and five (5) Directors;

5. To review and approve By-law No 1, a by-law relating generally to the conduct of the affairs of Ostomy Canada Society

to conform to the new Not-for-Profit Act;

6. To transact such other business as many properly come before the meeting.

During the year 2010, our website has had 504,822 hits 17,193 unique visitors. During2011,we have had 660,359 hits from 19,160 unique visitors.

During 2012, there were 728,083 hits on our website by 27,019 unique visitors. Our focus this term has

to been to develop social media.

62% of our visitors come from bookmarks or links in emails and 28% found our website through a

search engine, with Google being the most popular.

80% of our visitors use Windows, 13% use Macintosh, less than 1% use mobile phones.

70% of our visitors type in the URL, use bookmarks or links in email to reach our site, 21% came to

our site from a search engine and 9% came to our site from a link on another web site.

Chapter Information on the Website

Did you know that our websitewww.ostomycanada.ca had over a half million hits last year? A lot of

the visitors visited the website to look for a support group in their area. Therefore, it is important that

this information be kept up to date! Make sure when sending the information in to the UOAC office

that the chapters contact information is current - phone number, email contact, newsletter availabil-

ity, website, annual dues, meeting dates and times. Visit our chapters page on our website at

http://www.ostomycanada.ca/chaptersand let the UOAC office know via email if any of the infor-

mation needs to be updated. Weve had at least one chapter past president contact the office to tell us

that the website still included their phone number instead of the current president. Please check your

chapters listing to make sure the updates have been done correctly!

EDITORS MESSAGE

Now in its 71st year, National Volunteer Week is all about volunteer recognition. This years celebration took

place between April 21 and 27.

A week is never enough time to celebrate volunteers who make a tremendous contribution in communities

across the country. They make our communities resilient and our country vibrant.

Ostomy Canada is proud to have dedicated volunteers leading the organization nationally and to have hundreds

of volunteers guiding chapters across the country. Most of these volunteers dont think theyre volunteering.

Theyre doing what comes naturally to them helping others live better lives not only within their ostomy

groups, but in countless other organizations in their communities.

The most recent Ottawa chapter newsletter printed a list of the top 10 reasons to volunteer. This should be dis-

tributed to each and every chapter member, some of whom are eager participants in helping the chapters thrive,

and others who attend meetings but rarely ask to (or are asked to) volunteer.

1. Its good for you! Research shows that those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional abil-

ity as they get older and report good health more often.

2. Those who volunteer are less likely to be depressed. So, go for itput on a happy face.

3. Volunteering is a great way learn a new skill.

4. Belong. There is no better way to meet good people and connect with your community.

5. It just plain feels good to give back to your community.

6. Volunteers consistently report a high feeling of self-worth, achievement and higher motivation.

7. In a recent study, more than 90% of employers feel that volunteering enhances job skills, and over 70% said

they would hire someone with volunteer experience over someone without.

8. Get out of a rut. Volunteering is a great way to explore and get experience in a new field.9. Spend time with your family. Volunteering as a family is a great way to spend time together.

10. Enrich your life. Volunteering adds meaning in many ways, through learning new skills, making new friend-

ships, and by making our community a better place to live.

A wealthy American Indian

entered a gambling spa in Las

of play, he lost all his money. He

a smoke signal. Please send me

Little Johnnys kindergarten classwas on a field trip to their local po-

lice station where they saw pictures

tacked to a bulletin board of the 10

most wanted criminals. One of the

youngsters pointed to a picture and

asked if it really was the photo of a

wanted person. Yes, said the po-

liceman, the detective want very

badly to capture him. Little Johnny

asked, Why didnt you keep him

when you took his picture?

coming months! The dates for the Conference are July 31 August 2, 2014. We have the Delta St. Johns tentatively booked. Come
