Project Title Showcasing Keele Geology’s Earthquake Monitoring
Short Description
Keele Geology continuously records seismic data, detecting earthquakes from around the world. This
project will analyse recent earthquakes and combine with other information to produce displays for the
earthquakes noticeboard in the foyer of the William Smith Building

Brief description
Keele Geology runs a “garden-gate” type long period seismometer that detects earthquakes from around the world (M3-4+ Nationally; M5-6+ Across Europe; M7-8+
Worldwide). The earthquake seismograms can be extracted from the data stream and filtered to best
display characteristic features such as particular earthquake phases. The record can be processed to
determine the distance to the earthquake and estimate its magnitude. This data can be combined with similar
records from around the world to locate the earthquake and determine factors regarding the
earthquake’s tectonic setting. This project will take data from recent earthquakes recorded at Keele,
process them to produce an information display panel on the earthquakes noticeboard in the foyer of the
William Smith Building for fellow students, staff and visitors to the School. Past earthquake display panels will be archived as pdfs and kept for online viewing.

What will the outcomes of the project be?
Aims are to produce displays showcasing the Keele Geology Seismometer for display in the William Smith
Building and a digital archive,
What tasks will the student undertake?
Seismic data processing analysis using computer software (JAmaseis, Seisgram2K7) and display results
(CorelDraw or Powerpoint)

need?Basic knowledge of earthquake seismology, design skills.

Around 1-2 Hours per week, but may occasionally have more if a significant earthquake happens.
If this does occur, student will be expected to work quickly on this for potential media interest.
