"Forgiveness is 'the letting go of the right to

hurt someone back:" JTB says "Great people don't carry around little bits of anger and hate.

Do something truly Great and let it go man!"

Mother Theresa was right on target when she said, “God created us so we can do small things with Great love. I be-

lieve in that Great love, that comes, or should come from our heart, should start at home:

with my family, my neighbors, across the

street, those right next door. And this love

should then reach every-one.” (Submitted by

Sister Michael of St. Jo-seph’s Home Lacon) Mother Theresa was

That's alot of Dough! (reprinted article from magazine)

"We Worked as a Team" from an edition from the 1960’s JTB believes

"Bake Boys Raised Dough as Parents Vacationed:" by Louise Marchiando Pranzini, Cherry, Illinois. As I think about this story, it seems as if it occurred in another life-time. Years ago, kids took on grown-up responsibilities so early in life. My family owned a small-town bakery in Cherry, Illinois. In 1928 my parents took a 3-month trip to Italy to visit my father's relatives. They left me, age 10, and my brothers Pe-ter 13 and Domenic 15 in the care of Mother's parents. A cousin took charge of the little store in the front of our bakery and Peter and Dom ran the bakery itself. Hav-ing two teenagers run a business enterprise for three months may seem unbelieva-ble today, but Peter and Dom had grown up in the bakery and knew what to do! They'd mixed bread dough manually and cut out the 1-pound loaves by hand ever since they were five, when they to stand on benches to reach the counter. One day after Mom and Dad had left, Dom noticed the flour supply was running low. He con-tacted the flour company and ordered more...a whole train car load! And the sales-man obliged! Through the years I've often wondered if the man had reservations about taking an order that size...after all, he was dealing with a 15-year old boy! The flour soon arrived at the depot near-by and the boys contracted with a trucker to get it delivered to the bakery. When our flour shanty out back was crammed full, Dom and Peter found themselves in a predicament. What would they do with all the flour remaining in the truck? The boys walked from house to house in Cherry taking orders...and they sold it all When my parents returned from their trip they found a shanty full of flour, a bill marked "paid in full," and an extra $300 in their savings account!"

Here’s what people around the country are saying about “Up Ravioli Alley!”

Burl George of Spring Valley writes, “ I have been given a copy of Volume 1, issue10 of "Up Ravioli Al-ley". I was surprised and pleased to see a photo of my old friend, high school classmate and fellow WWII, Army Air Corps airplane pilot, Col. Dante Bulli. We happened to meet in Dallas, TX during WWII. All planes were forced to land at the time due to tornadoes in the area. While waiting to check into a local hotel, I was in line to secure a room and noticed the officer in front of me seemed to look fa-miliar. When he turned around, because of my tap on his shoulder, it was Dante Bulli. He was on his way from somewhere in the Pacific , ferrying a plane from there to a US Air Base, while I was on my way from West Texas to an Air Base in Tennessee. He and I, and our co-pilots had a great time that evening. Also, my wife and I vividly remember the "Dago Room". You should have mentioned Mules' Uncle "Modess" ,as one of the bartenders. He periodically cooked a Goat "kid" for the bar customers.”

Peggy C. Ali Khan of Spring Valley says, “As always....way to keep the good things rolling, Ravioli Alley!” Steve Terando and wife Agnes of Chicago formerly of Spring Valleys write, “ With the Mission Statement -

- "Nothing But Good News And Good People Doing Great Things" -- I want to be a part of it! Jim Faletti, originally from Dalzell and now living in Crete, IL. and my sister Mary Ferrari S/V, urged me to subscribe to Up Ravioli Alley. I read the July issue and thought it was great. I still make wine the old fashioned way using California grape. We plan to make it again this October. If all goes well I can hopefully contribute input to Up Ravioli Alley.”

Ed Zeglis of Spring Valley writes, “ Thanks John the Barber Foundation for promoting our St. Peter and Paul Spring Valley first mass in four years. Your efforts helped get the word out and was greatly appreci-ated. “Doing Great Things!” Thanks! (Hey URA readers, make sure to attend the next St. Peter and Paul Spring Valley mass Friday September 12, 2014, at 8:00 a.m. the feast of Mary.)

“Remember When :” St. Pat’s Arlington well known alumni character, life-time farmer really had his neighbors do something Great for him!

Folks around Ravioli Alley remember Paul McDonald, rural St. Pat’s Arlington product who farmed in Bureau and LaSalle County/Troy Grove his entire life. What a Great guy he was! Someone to emulate for sure! His neighbors truly loved and respected him. When his wife Agnes passed away the following article ran in the LaSalle News Trib-une “Twenty-two friends and neighbors of Paul McDonald, who resides east of Troy Grove, picked corn in a 75-acre field Friday for Mr. McDonald. Mrs. McDonald died this past Saturday. Nine corn pickers, 18 wagons and several tractors were used in the project. Dinner was prepared and served by Mrs. Tom Fitzgerald, Mrs. William Fitzgerald, and Mrs. Daniel Kabilsik. Men responsible for the corn picking were Ralph, Harry, and Joe Houski, William Justin, Joe/Tom/Elmer Fitzgerald, Walter & Vernon Edgcomb, Kenneth & Warren Morrison, Dale/Don/Eli Newll, Lee McConville, Albert Foster, Art Croissant, Ray Keutzer, William & Paul Flaherty and Pat Boyland.” Years later, in the 70’s, when Paul broke his leg in a farming accident, his neigh-bors came through again to help him harvest his crops. A picture of that group is below. Spot anyone in that group you know? Both the article and the picture, representing the Great acts of his friends and neighbors, were among Paul’s prized possessions. “Good farmers doing Great things!”

Here’s a few quick Rav-notes...

Anyone out there have information on Dalzell’s “Lavoratori Club?” Loyal URA reader George Liesse is looking for information on what appears to have been an Italian based men’s club known as the “Lavoratori Club” from somewhere in Dalzell’s past. George, an avid metal detector hobbyist, found a “good in trade” token for the club in the recent past and others found a good image of a similar token on Ebay. Dalzell history buff Carlo Olivero commented that he had not heard of it before and reading on the Internet had confirmed that it pos-sibly was a bit more of a Sisilian club….and of course most of Dalzell’s Italian population was from more northern Italy. A little more internet research says that it meant “workmen’s club.” Anyone out there with info please mail or email JTB. Thanks!

Lori Brown Definately doing Great things in the battles against overdoes!: "Ravioli Alley" resident Lori Brown of Cherry is stepping up and doing Great things to organized and drive awareness and prevention of drug overdose throughout the Illinois Valley. Lori is driven by her great love and devotion for her son Justin "Buddy" Pratt who fought addiction and died of an accidental overdose in 2011. Recently, for the second year in a row, she succeeded in lob-bying the LaSalle County Board to set aside August 24 - 31, 2014 as “Overdoes Awareness Week” in LaSalle, County. "I'm trying to increase the complete level of awareness of drug overdose," says Brown "Our group wants to help educate the public on addictive illness and help stop the stigma that addictive deseases carry." If you want to help Lori and her team do Great things, drop her a note at [email protected] and she can tell you how to get in-volved! Additctions have been a big challenge in "Ravioli Alley" for 100+ years. Now is a great chance to step up and help Lori and her team as they try to stamp them out!

Their team is known as “Team Thrive” and members have included Lynne Bonnell, Brad Bonnell, Steve and Renee Carlson, Travis and Lisa Moore, Lauren Koch, An-gie Rush, Nikki Fischer, Jennifer Donnelly, Jennifer Phillips, Rachel Thompson, Becky Hoscheid, Shelley Dinges, and Allie Carlson.
