Goparsquos little house made of softdry leaves and twigs was in theArjuna tree as well Thedormouse had often seen Fatimareading and loved the yellowribbons in her hair

But Goparsquos Amma had warnedher about the terrors of theDown World

All the animals were fearful ofFatima and other human beingsand tried to remain invisible tothe Down World

That Sunday Gopa had beenswinging on her green leafyhammock and reading She wasabout to turn the last page whena strong breeze blew the bookout of her small furry pawsDown it went It bounced on thebranches and floated away Thebook fell THWACK and hitFatima on her head

Goparsquos tail quivered and earstwitched The Up and DownWorld should never meet shethought and bolted home

Fatima didnrsquot climb the tree but kept squinting and trying to read the book The letterswere too small Finally she decided to return the book to the shadowy furry creature

Fatima was really clever ndash next Sunday she tied five shiny red balloons around her waistand suddenly she was floating up To the Up World

Up Up and Up went Fatima until she reached the tree tops

ldquoOh balloons Maybe it issomeonersquos birthdayrdquo shethought excitedly But what wasthis

But Fatima was faster Fatima offered Gopa the book and asked ldquoIs this yoursrdquo

Gopa grabbed the book quickly and smiled Fatima giggled She caught Gopa staring at her ribbons and tiedone in a neat bow around her tail Fatima and Gopa held hands and went off exploring

Fatima and Gopa ran andskipped over the gaps in thetrees of the canopy forest

They bugged Baankey the fruitbat who was sleeping upsidedown Baankey did not like beingpoked He grunted grumpily andflapped away to the next branch

ldquoThese kids will never let merestrdquo he thought Soon he wasaway in Dreamsville where hewas hanging out in a fig treebiting into the fleshy sweetfruits

Gopa helped Fatima hop over thelong lines of weaver ants whowere too busy to even stop andsay hello With long spindly legsand bubble-shaped bodies theweaver ants scampered all overthe tree

These ants love teams Theywork together to stitch largeleaves into cozy nests

ldquoHe looks like a rainbowrdquothought Fatima ldquoYellow feet redeyes and a blue bodyrdquo Firki wasso surprised to see a human inhis canopy that he almost let goof his strong grip on the branchHe croaked a weak hello andturned to pounce on his lunch ndash agrasshopper

Meet Fatimarsquos Friends in the Up World

Gopa and her friends live in the vast forest canopiesof India That means they donrsquot live in the DownWorld like us human beings Instead they live in theUp World in the swinging branches and swayingleaves of trees

Many creatures that live in forest canopies are nowused to living in tree tops If yoursquore lucky you willspot some of them but most of these animals knowhow to hide themselves cleverly So you have to bepatient

When scientists go to learn about these canopiesthey have to use ropes or ladders because thetrees are very tall Some even use very large hot-airballoons to get up there You can imagine just howUp Fatima had to go with her balloons

Here are some of the animals who living in forestcanopies

Malabar spiny dormouse This bushy-tailed animallikes to live in trees in quiet undisturbed forests Itloves to eat fruits and nibbles on pepper sometimesThis dormouse sleeps like a hedgehog curled up withits tail protruding OUT

Hornbill These birds are vividly coloured with longand strong beaks These sociable birds love to eatfruits insects and even small animals They makenests in holes in trees and when they have babiesthey make a mud wall to cover up the hole much likemaking a house

Green vine snake A bright green slender tree snakethat hides in the leaves of a canopy It moves veryslowly You can find them not only in India but also SriLanka Bangladesh Burma Thailand Cambodia andVietnam

Tree frog There are several kinds of tree frogs andthey come in various colours They can have white lipsor red or yellow eyes and brown feet They are usuallyvery small half the size of your palm because theyhave to jump around delicate branches They spendmost of their lives up in the trees

Fruit bat (aka Megabat) They hang upside downTry to imagine what the world looks like to them Theylove to eat fruits and being busy in the trees They canbe super noisy too You can hear them from a longway off They have keen senses of sight and smell andare very helpful to us because they pollinate theflowers and fruits we love

Gopa and her friends live in the vast forest canopiesof India That means they donrsquot live in the DownWorld like us human beings Instead they live in theUp World in the swinging branches and swayingleaves of trees

Many creatures that live in forest canopies are nowused to living in tree tops If yoursquore lucky you willspot some of them but most of these animals knowhow to hide themselves cleverly So you have to bepatient

When scientists go to learn about these canopiesthey have to use ropes or ladders because thetrees are very tall Some even use very large hot-airballoons to get up there You can imagine just howUp Fatima had to go with her balloons

Meet Fatimarsquos Friends in the Up World

Gopa and her friends live in the vast forest canopiesof India That means they donrsquot live in the DownWorld like us human beings Instead they live in theUp World in the swinging branches and swayingleaves of trees

Many creatures that live in forest canopies are nowused to living in tree tops If yoursquore lucky you willspot some of them but most of these animals knowhow to hide themselves cleverly So you have to bepatient

When scientists go to learn about these canopiesthey have to use ropes or ladders because thetrees are very tall Some even use very large hot-airballoons to get up there You can imagine just howUp Fatima had to go with her balloons

Fruit bat (aka Megabat) They hang upside downTry to imagine what the world looks like to them Theylove to eat fruits and being busy in the trees They canbe super noisy too You can hear them from a longway off They have keen senses of sight and smell andare very helpful to us because they pollinate theflowers and fruits we love
