Among his many activities, Foglesong prepared the most complete discography to date of every known release of SFS commercial recordings, including modern re-issues, commercially available broadcast transcriptions and video materials. As part of this project, he prepared a digital collection of the SFS’s entire body of commercial recordings. Foglesong further collected

The San Francisco Symphony’s (SFS) celebration of its 100th anniversary season owes much of its momentum to Scott Foglesong, chair of the Conservatory’s music theory and musicianship department. A longtime lecturer at the SFS in addition to his Conservatory duties, Foglesong has played a vital role in documenting and disseminating the symphony’s history.

and edited the recordings for a web-based historical timeline containing some 35 musical selections, drawn from the symphony’s recordings since 1925. (He even restored certain recordings for the SFS web site.)

There’s more: Foglesong also provided recordings for an exhibit on the anniversary now on view at the San Francisco Public Library. A video documentary on the SFS’s history features Foglesong both in front of and behind the camera, as both interview subject and music consultant.

On top of all this, Foglesong is receiving face time in the community. In September he appeared on Alan Farley’s KALW program “My Favorite Things,” discussing his SFS projects as well as the Conservatory’s own history. On October 18 he gives a public presentation on the SFS’s recorded history at the San Francisco Public Library. Foglesong also created a 12-episode series of podcasts on the SFS’s history on record, which he researched, wrote, assembled, narrated and engineered. Look for them on the SFS web site starting December 8.

Nicole Paiement and her Ensemble Parallèle, the Conservatory’s resident new music group, garnered great acclaim for their August production of Virgil Thomson’s Four Saints in Three Acts at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, a production that featured several Conservatory alumni and was paired with faculty member Luciano Chessa’s

The Conservatory recently bid a fond farewell to two longtime colleagues who recently retired their posts: John McCarthy, director of the Preparatory and Adult Extension Divisions; and Kathryn Cathcart, music director of the Opera Theatre program. More New Faces This academic year, the Conservatory welcomes new collegiate faculty Brian Herndon (beginning acting) and Krzysztof Izdebski (vocal physiology). Andrew Luchansky, already faculty in the Preparatory Division, now teaches string pedagogy

in the Collegiate Division. Steven Sánchez joins as adjunct faculty to teach bass clarinet, and Matthew Siegel comes on board as instructor of literature and creative writing. In addition, the Conservatory welcomes new music associates Ron Valentino as opera coach and Xiyan Wang as collegiate accompanist.

Other faculty members are taking on new roles this year. New department chairs include Jodi Levitz and Mack McCray (Strings and Piano Chamber Music) and Brian Neilson (General Education), while Robert Britton will also chair a new department whose name and scope await description. Curtis Pajer, previously an opera coach and collegiate vocal accompanist, has been appointed principal coach of the Opera Theatre program.

If music is the universal language, then chamber music, at least for the conservatories in San Francisco and Shanghai, is a shared dialect. This past May, both schools came together in Shanghai to co-produce the first in a new series of annual chamber music festivals. The program included several days of master classes, rehearsals and coachings, culminating in performances featuring joint ensembles of faculty and students from each school. Yehudi Wyner, winner of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for music who managed to catch the festival, called it a wonderful event, remarking, “You really brought the A-team!” Lest we feel

left out on the home front, faculty violist Jodi Levitz, while perched in the Conservatory library, worked with students in Shanghai during a real-time, virtual coaching session witnessed by audiences in each city, thanks to technology provided by Conservatory partner Polycom, Inc. Look for a forthcoming release of highlights recorded by noted engineer Jorg Jecklin—China’s first classical Blu-Ray DVD. This season’s installment promises to be even more exciting, as the Conservatory plays host to the next festival March 12-16, 2012, at 50 Oak Street. Students and faculty from both conservatories will team up to perform masterworks as well as premieres of commissioned compositions. To get involved, contact Alexander Brose at [email protected] or 415.503.6263.

led a crisp, finely tuned performance populated by a cast of fine singers” and praised “the excellent new-music outfit Ensemble Parallèle.” And according to Allan Ulrich of the Financial Times, “Engaging the contemporary music organisation, Ensemble Parallèle proved an astute decision. Under founder Nicole Paiement’s attentive direction, the 22 players communicated the wheezing

vitality and sheer gusto of Thomson’s Midwestern folk and hymn tunes and open harmonies that fuse so brilliantly with Stein’s mesmerising syntactical excursions.”

The Conservatory welcomes Joan gordon as the new director of the Preparatory and Adult Extension Divisions. Gordon comes from the Aspen Music Festival and School, where she served as vice president and dean. She is well acquainted with

the Conservatory, having served as admission officer in the Collegiate Division from 1994 to 2000. “I am thrilled to be returning to the Conservatory for this exciting position,” says Gordon. “Both the Preparatory and the Adult Extension divisions have an excellent and dedicated faculty and the programs currently offered reflect that. I look forward to working with everyone to create a dynamic future for the two divisions.”

Singing BeijingTo many Americans, China might appear an unusual place for serious singers to train for Western opera careers. But one of the hottest spots for opera instruction this summer happened to be in Beijing, in a new summer program called I Sing Beijing. And impressively, three Conservatory students—Evgenia Chaverdova, Emma McNairy and Julia Metzler—were among 20 talented singers chosen from more than 200 auditionees to participate in the inaugural program. (Chaverdova and Metzler study with César Ulloa, while McNairy is a student of Pamela Fry.)

A unique cross-cultural musical experience, I Sing Beijing affords training in both Western and Chinese opera techniques through individual coaching sessions and daily Mandarin lessons, plus acting and performance classes and lectures on both Eastern and Western opera topics. Singing in Mandarin was doubtless a novelty for most of the non-Chinese participants, but Metzler assured

in an interview with msnbc.com that the linguistic challenges weren’t insurmountable: “The sounds are foreign, but they are no more difficult than singing in less frequent operatic languages, like Czech.” The program culminated in a gala concert at Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, with many of China’s leading artistic directors and conductors in attendance.

Wind Winnersat FischoffElise Blatchford (M.M., flute, ‘07) and Leander Star (B.M., horn, ‘07) belong to the Chicago-based wind quintet The City of Tomorrow, which recently won the gold medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In October the group embarks on a Fischoff Gold Medal Tour, which includes performances in Evanston, Illinois and on WFMT Chicago radio. Blatchford and Star studied with Robert Ward, Jonathan Ring and Timothy Day.

Thanks to the help and heart of Conservatory faculty Mark Inouye, ten trumpet students played the national anthem at AT&T Park before the San Francisco Giants game on September 27. Two even used herald trumpets loaned from San Francisco Opera (courtesy of Adam Luftman, the Opera’s principal trumpet and future Conservatory trumpet faculty next year), with specially designed school banners to boot. Inouye bought tickets for students to stay for the game, while he and fellow faculty member David Burkhart watched from the stadium’s free viewing area. Sharks and Warriors, take note: If the Giants’ 7-0 shutout of the Colorado Rockies that night is any indication, you might want to listen to that audition tape waiting in your mailbox.

The ZOFO piano duo, comprising Keisuke Nakagoshi (M.M., piano, ‘06) and Eva-Maria Zimmermann, has signed a recording contract with the Grammy Award-winning Sono Luminus label. The CD, recorded at Skywalker Studios, will feature works of Bernstein, Shapero, Debussy and Stravinsky. Look for the release next year.

Lage Coming of AgeGuitarist and Preparatory alumnus Julian Lage is on the road this fall with Grammy-winning jazz vibraphone master Gary Burton in support of the New Gary Burton Quartet’s debut release, Common Ground. The West Coast leg of this North American tour of A-list venues includes appearances in Vancouver, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Yoshi’s in Oakland. All of 21 years old, the former student of Scott Cmiel is now old enough to order a drink at his own shows!

A Greek Hero in the Great White North

The guest of honor for the upcoming Fanfare Luncheon on January 21, 2012, is pianist Choong Mo Kang (M.M.,

piano, ’86), a soloist and teacher of international stature. A winner of the Frinna Awerbuch and Washington International piano competitions, Kang has appeared around the world as soloist with the likes of the London Philharmonic and Moscow Philharmonic orchestras. With a number of noteworthy recordings of J.S. Bach under his belt, Kang is in the midst of an ambitious five-year project to perform the composer’s entire keyboard output—no mean feat! He has taught at the Peabody Institute and South Korea’s National University of the Arts, is artistic director of Leipzig’s Euro Music Festival and Academy and an instructor at the Ishikawa Music Festival in Japan. He joined the piano faculty at The Juilliard School this fall. He serves on prestigious competition juries and his students have won major competitions, including the Van Cliburn. A graduate of Seoul National University, South-Korean born Kang studied with Mack McCray at the Conservatory before completing a D.M.A. at Peabody.

Achilles Liarmakopoulos (B.M., trombone, ‘06), a former student of Mark Lawrence, is the new trombonist of the Canadian Brass. Chuck Daellenbach, tubist and leader of the ensemble, notes, “We are thrilled to have Achilles join us. He is young, charismatic and one of the finest trombonists performing today. We all love his presence, focus and personality and think he will be an ideal member of our ensemble.” About joining the Brass, Liarmakopoulos says, “There are no words to express how excited and honored I feel to be part of this legendary and phenomenal group.” In March, Liarmakopoulos released his debut solo CD, Tango Distinto, on the Naxos label, featuring works of Astor Piazzolla.

Participants enjoyed cultural experiences also, including a feast at the Summer Palace where the singers were the guests of honor. “What particularly struck me . . . was our host’s speech about his intended goal of wanting to preserve Chinese culture even through all of the innovation and development he conjures in his business ventures,” said McNairy in a blog post.

With luminaries from both the American and Chinese opera worlds on faculty, I Sing Beijing has attracted media notice from the likes of the Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio and Time magazine for its innovative blend of East and West. It will even be the subject of a documentary by acclaimed director Allan Miller; watch for it on PBS later this year.

Sophomore guitarist Matthew Lyons, a student of David Tanenbaum, made a big impression this summer in the Festival del Sole’s Bouchaine Young

Artist Concert series in Napa Valley. In a program combining original works with a mixed classical repertory, the Napa Valley Register raved, “Throughout the recital, Lyons played with poetic spontaneity. His digital dexterity is astonishingly clear and clean. . . . He’s a young artist to watch.”

A Message from the President

As the curtain opens on another year at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, I am once again filled with anticipation about the abundant programs being planned by our students, faculty and guests. The 2011-2012 year promises to be one of great artistic and educational achievements across the board.

At the same time, I look back proudly at the Conservatory’s many accomplishments of the past 12 months. Admissions standards continued to achieve impressive thresholds in terms of both selectivity and yield rates. Artistic highlights included a landmark celebration of the 25th anniversary of our chamber music program and the first annual San Francisco-Shanghai International Chamber Music Festival, for which Conservatory students and faculty traveled across the Pacific to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

And speaking of anniversaries, the Conservatory’s own 100th anniversary looms on the horizon. Though 2017 is still several years away, planning has already begun for what will be a historic celebration of our hundred years in existence. As our centennial plans take shape, we will be sure to keep you informed of major developments.

In many respects, this coming year will also be about continuity and building on our success. Following an alumni

recital by Weigang Li this past April, we are launching a full Alumni Recital Series that brings several of our highly accomplished alumni back to our halls. Additionally, the annual San Francisco-Shanghai festival initiated last May comes to San Francisco this year, and we look forward to welcoming the Shanghai delegates for a fruitful collaboration that further bolsters the thriving relationship between our schools.

It is truly an exciting time here at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and I remain extremely grateful for your support in making this school an extraordinary home for musical activity. As we look toward the coming year, I hope you will continue to keep the Conservatory in your thoughts by generously making a gift to support our students.

Appreciatively yours,

Colin Murdoch

November. Also performing will be alumnus, pianist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane, music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and former artistic director of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, while Conservatory Piano Faculty Chair Mack McCray will offer a humorous nod to Murdoch’s legacy. Rounding out the performance roster is legendary opera star Frederica von Stade. An abiding friend of the Conservatory, which keeps a faculty voice chair in her name, von Stade holds an honorary doctorate and is a member of the Conservatory’s Advisory Board.

Murdoch has overseen several major initiatives in his 20 years as president, including the school’s historic move

to its current home at 50 Oak Street. Rising standards in student quality, the recruitment of several outstanding faculty teacher-artists and important relationships with world-class guest performers have also marked Murdoch’s tenure at the helm.

Longtime Conservatory Trustee Kent Baum and his wife Marie-José Baum, chair of the Conservatory Society, will serve as co-chairs of the event, with catering by McCalls, Catering and Events and décor by J. Riccardo Benavides of IDEAS. Individual tickets range from $1,000 to $3,500 and may be purchased by calling Christian Mills at 415.503.6291 or [email protected].

2012 Gala (cont. from page 1)

The Conservatory has elected Timothy W. Foo as the new Chair of its Board of Trustees. A music educator prior to embarking on a career as a private investor, Foo has served as the Board’s Executive Vice-Chair since 2008. He is also a trustee of the University of Oregon Foundation and a member of the Advisory Council on China of Brown University.

The Board also announced its new slate of officers chosen for the coming term: Deepika R. Pakianathan, Executive Vice-Chair; Edward W. Beck, William K. Bowes, Jr., and Michael R.V. Whitman, Vice Chairs; Joshua M. Rafner, Treasurer; and Carol Pucci Doll, Secretary.

An accomplished musician, Eileen Blum-Bourgade was a semifinalist at the International Paganini Violin Competition and a former first violinist with the American Symphony Orchestra. She is on the faculty at Golden Gate Philharmonic, an active chamber musician and the proud mother of two students in the Conservatory’s Preparatory Division.

Robert Cory is managing director of Oxbow Bend Holdings and a longtime board member and former chair of Paterson Paper Company. He is on the board of San Francisco Opera, where he chairs the Adler Committee, and has served on the board of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.

Attorney Karen Kubin is a partner at Morrison and Foerster. The Daily Journal has named her one of California’s Top Women Litigators, Top 100 Lawyers and Top 75 Labor and Employment Lawyers. Kubin works as a mediator for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and has served on the board of San Francisco Girls Chorus.

Aditi H. Mandpe, M.D. is an Otolaryngology-Head and Neck surgeon with San Francisco Ear, Nose and Throat Medical Group and the California Pacific Medical Center. She is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Triological Society and has participated in numerous humanitarian medical missions to Guatemala.

Diane Rubin is a partner at Novogradac & Company LLP. Prior board service includes the Auditing Standards Board, chairing the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and a term as president of the California Board of Accountancy. In 2006, she was named one of the top 100 most influential practitioners by both Accounting Today and

NPA magazines. A director and former president of the San Francisco Opera Guild, Rubin served on the Conservatory’s 2011 Gala Committee.

group of recent graduates already beginning to make a name for themselves. (Examiner.com’s Stephen Smoliar called their performance of Mendelssohn’s Trio in C Minor “a truly stunning account of this composer at the top of his game.”)

“The first alumni recital came right on the heels of student orientation, and it was the first performance of the new school year,” notes Trustee gary Rust (B.M., piano, ’83), chair of the Conservatory’s Alumni Network Committee, which crafted the series and chooses the participants. “For this performance we wanted to feature recent alumni, embracing them as new graduates of the Conservatory as well as inspiring both beginning and returning students.”

The second recital ties in with the Conservatory’s annual Fanfare Luncheon, a private event for members of the

Conservatory Society saluting the achievements of a distinguished alumnus. This year’s honoree, Choong Mo Kang (M.M., piano, ’86), just joined the piano faculty at The Juilliard School and will take the stage for a public performance on January 21. (See related story on page 5.) To conclude the series Rust sought out a marquee artist, and he certainly got one in Hai-Ye Ni (B.M., cello, ’92), principal cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, who performs on March 28.

Installing a formal alumni performance series brings a number of artistic benefits to the Conservatory. “The Alumni Recital Series is a great way to enhance the breadth of the Conservatory’s offerings,” says Rust. “It’s also an ideal way to display to the general public the talent pool of our alumni community.” And in the spirit of goodwill, all performers in the series generously donate their services.

The Conservatory and the Community

Humanity has existed for centuries without machines, automobiles, airplanes, telephones, radios, but it has never been able to exist without

music.

From the remotest times in history, music has been an important social

factor; the greatest thinkers have recognized its educational and moral power. Thus, it is a necessity and not a luxury.

In the turmoil of our industrial age we need more than ever an outlet for our unemployed emotional energies.

Music, as well as the other arts, ought to be an inherent part of our lives.

Its study, which thus far, has been more or less the privilege of certain classes, ought to become the privilege of all.

Every human being is entitled to share of beauty.

The aim of a Conservatory is not only to educate the professional musicians, but to offer to all the means of studying, understanding and loving the masterpieces of music.

Its ultimate purpose is to raise the spiritual level of human beings.

Any welfare institution of this kind ought to be free from commercialism, financially independent and supported by the community for which it is built.

Such a Conservatory will return in a hundred fold what it receives from the community in making a better humanity and contributing to the moral health of the nation.

Ernest Bloch, The Lyre, Vol. 2 No. 2, 1929

1928 Conservatory Advertisement

Updike writes, “From one of the Conservatory’s scrapbooks, I found this advertisement for their winter term which was run in 1928 in a number of Bay Area newspapers (listed on the top left side of the ad). Ernest Bloch is listed as the Artistic Director, Ada and Lillian are Associate Directors. The departments taught are printed here, along with the instructors. Additional subjects, such as History, French, German and Italian, are also listed.

“News clippings such as these tell us a great deal about the history of the Conservatory. We look forward to sharing more as we continue to arrange, preserve, and prepare the collections for use!”

Pepe Romero, guitar legend and guest of honor at the 2011 Conservatory Gala, received an honorary Doctor of Music degree and delivered an address to the graduating class at the Conservatory’s Commencement ceremony this past May. In September, Romero appeared alongside the San Francisco guitar Quartet (Patrick O’Connell [M.M., guitar, ’06], Jon Mendle [M.M., guitar, ‘10], David Dueñas [M.M., guitar, ’94] and Mark Simons) on the opening night performances of the 2011 La Guitarra California Festival, presented by Cal Poly Arts in San Luis Obispo, California. Guitarist Thomas Viloteau (P.S.D., guitar, ’09) also performed at the festival.

Composition Department Chair Dan Becker has announced the next stage in the evolution of his department’s collaborative endeavors: the Conservatory’s first Percussion Project. A joint effort with the percussion department, chaired by faculty member and San Francisco Symphony Principal Percussionist Jack Van geem, this undertaking will be modeled on two previously established programs, the Viola Project and the guitar department’s “Doublespeak.” Keep an eye out for a concert on December 4, or just follow the sound of the drums . . .
